Physical Receiver

June 18th, 2020

Nightmare for corners.

For Bucs fans who have been long-time listeners of the Ira Kaufman Podcast, you know there is one thing Ira has harped on for years.

Ira believes in throwing deep to Mike Evans in crucial situations. Why? Well, first, Evans is one of the best receivers in the game and may just be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday.

But as Ira would say, “nevermind that.” Ira points out that zebras are flag-happy when it comes to defensive pass interference calls. So if, by chance, Evans doesn’t come down with a pass, Ira reasons there are good odds he’ll draw a defensive pass interference call.

It seems Ira is onto something. Per the PFF tribe, Evans is one of the best wide receivers at drawing defensive pass interference calls over the past two seasons. In fact, only three NFL receivers have pulled more flags out of referees’ pockets for defensive interference calls than Evans.

Allen Robinson of the Bears has drawn 14 defensive pass interference calls since 2018. Courtland Sutton of the Broncos is second with 12. Michael Thomas of the Saints has 11.

Evans is tied with Odell Beckham at 10 each.

This also suggests to Joe how physical of a receiver Evans is.

So the Tribe has proven Ira right. If Evans somehow doesn’t come down with a pass, it’s not far-fetched to expect a defensive pass interference flag on the play. And a first down.

Good job, Ira!

Ugh and he has 5 offensive pass interferences in that time as well. Physical receiver… indeed!

Mike is going to have a career high year !

    ME13 is a BEAST… Dude is AWESOME…and top 3 WR in NFL.

Those who say ME13 made Manziel at TAMU….not sure about that…the ‘freak” QB actually posted great numbers during his short tenure as Browns QB. Manziel failure issues as NFL QB seemed to be combination of entitlement and chemical-related issues.

Will be interesting in 2020 season for ME13….Bet is ME13 prefers post-season option vs 7th consecutive season of 1K yards…

Brady will spread passes to RB’s, TE’s and WR’s short passes with a 2-4 long passes during game. ME13 might log 800 yards in regular season 2020. And ME13 will not care, if Brady gets Bucs to playoffs….

  4. SOEbuc Says:

Brady and Evans are gonna be sick. Up top in the end zone all day.

SOEBuc – You seem to be assuming Brady will have time in pocket. I am not so sure….I like our O-Line. Which will be much better in 2020, vs what JW had.

Opposing D’s are going to target Statue Brady, who will not run for extra yards under pressure….and will throw ball to the fans n stands — when under pressure.

GREAT – no INTs… Punt to opposing team and let Bucs D rule.

    Do we trust Bucs D?

For me, 2020 success is all about the Bucs D – vs Brady…

We have, arguably, the most talented tandem of WRs in the NFL. With Tom Brady throwing to them?!
Um, talk about a nightmare for opposing defenses!

  7. Jason Says:

I wonder if he would draw more penalties if he wasn’t begging for a flag after each incompletion. It is the only part of his game that annoys me. If he keeps producing like he has been his whole career though, I can can live with a little annoyance.

  8. Georger Says:

Over the last 10 years TB12 has only had 2 years where he didn’t have 1000 yard WR 2000 and 2018. 2018 they won the Super bowl. ME13 will keep his streak alive.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

ME13 gets interfered with constantly and it’s not called…..

Redzone, it would seem you are assuming Brady will stand in the pocket and eat sac after sac. If I remember correct the only difference between Brady and JW time in the pocket was if I remember right Brady was 2.52, while Winston was 2.57. The biggest difference wasn’t the time to release it was the fact that Brady went through his progression and found a target where as Winston focused on the one target are waited for the perfect time to throw. While the O-line wasn’t great by any means they were still not as bad as some people believe. How many times have we screamed the T.V over the last 6 years because JW tried to force a pass between 3 defenders when he had 2 other receivers open.

I’m still sore at Ira for ranking DeAndre freaking Hopkins over Mike recently, but life goes on. Cool stat. 😛

  12. BucsminsterFuller Says:

Hopefully TB12 can get the ball out infront of Evans.

  13. SOEbuc Says:

Bucsfan77…Exactly. People wanna focus on RT and how bad Dot was last year, but we had a decent passing oline. Add Wirfs. Tom will have laser beam eyes with these receivers. Compared to Jameis google eye goggles going through his progressions.

LMAO! I know right. He was #5 QB in 2018 and is perfectly healthy except for a bit of sore elbow last year. “But…but…but the GOAT is 43 not 41 now. And he won’t be able Arians, Leftwich, Christinsen, and all our other good offensive coaches won’t figure out a scheme to work with. 9-10 wins.”-National Sheep. And I love how it’s always Brady that’s going to get them the 9-10 wins and not this second year Bowels returning defense. 12-4/13-3.

maybe even more so now with the goat as QB!

Isn’t it funny that once Mike got over the whining for calls in the early part of his career he actually fihally started to get them.
