What Team Did Todd Bowles Jilt?

May 15th, 2020

Bucs DC Todd Bowles

Remember when Josh McDaniels screwed the Colts two years ago, accepting their head coaching gig and then quickly backing out?

Even Father Dungy ripped him publicly for hanging assistant coaches that committed to join him.

What does this have to do with the Buccaneers?

Staff member and retired Tampa Bay tight end Dave Moore, the Xs and Os guru of the Buccaneers Radio Network, told WGY radio in Buffalo that Todd Bowles and other Bucs coaches sort of pulled a McDaniels last year.

“When [Arians] was named as a head coach here, Bowles and some other guys that actually were committed to go somewhere else to coach actually stepped out of that to come and coach with Bruce Arians,” Moore said.

“So it says a lot about him as a leader, as a coach, as a motivator, and both players and coaches respect the heck out of him for it.”

Joe believes Moore, and Joe finds this bit of Bucs history rather fascinating considering Arians has said many times, including this month, that a reason he came out of retirement to join the Bucs is because his entire staff was available.

Well, they were available, but it seems they also had given their word elsewhere.

Joe is all good with it. It’s an apparent win for the Bucs. Joe just wonders what head coach(es) out there might be very pissed off at members of the Bucs staff.

They WANTED to coach here! Bowles wanted to reunite with Arians. It says a lot that they broke other committments.
Truthfully, who cares if other teams/coaches feel jilted!
    Two words:
    Bill
    Parcells

  2. Bradybru Says:

Bowles presence has significantly improved the defense. Looking forward to it being better this year with the secondary improving and It’s newest members.

  3. ModHairKen Says:

I hope that the plan in place is to appoint Coach Bowles when Arians retires again.

Anyone who has doubts because of what happened when he was the Jets coach, shouldn’t. Even Jesus would have a losing record coaching there.

As ling as Smitty is gone looking like a lost santa clause with dementia im happy

I always take articles like this with a grain of salt as they say. What Dave Moore’s comment DOESN’T say is whether or not Todd Bowles ‘giving his word’ was done with ‘caveats’ between the 2 parties (whoever the OTHER team was).

TB coached with BA for only 2 years in Arizona (2013 & 2014) and that propelled him into a head coaching job with the Jets. Who among us is to say that TB & BA didn’t make a similar ‘deal’ this time around … only with the Bucs? You know, the old ‘Hey Todd, I’m gonna re-retire in 2 years & you’re my designated head-coach-in-waiting IF you can produce a Top-10 defense with this team’. Or something like that.

Maybe TB had made the possibility of something like that understood with that OTHER team? Point is WE DON’T KNOW. And apparently neither does Dave Moore. But in the end it really doesn’t matter. TB wasn’t up for the HC position at that OTHER team, so it’s not really the exact same thing as the Josh McDaniels scenario. Todd obviously saw this as his best opportunity to achieve his remaining goals as a football coach (whatever they are), and made a business decision. People do that every single day. I’m more excited about what this DEFENSE than I’ve been since Tony Dungy’s days … and that’s because of Todd Bowles.

Arians and Bowles together “Pulled Out”………………………

    …………….(paints a disgusting picture………………………

    Quite Frankley………….who cares????

It’s there lives and there choices. I’m people have been at car dealerships and then backed out of buying a car cause they don’t want to incur a financial commitment on car for many years or they felt it wasn’t the right one for them………….

So NO…………I don’t blame any Head Coach for doing this.

  7. El Buco Realisto Says:

“Word on the street” is that it was a secondary coaching job for the packers!!!!!!!!!!!! And don’t the Bucs have to “win” , before joe can claim an “apparent win”!!!!!!!! 7-9 losing season!!!!!!!!! Joe is putting the cart before the horse with that line!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s time to herd the sheep, and put them back in the pen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Bird Says:

^^^^^Why do you say “go bucs” at the end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You dont act like a buc fan

  9. Bird Says:

    Here is an idea:

I think Ndog and El bucco realisto should get together with some sheep and a life size jameis fat head Cut out and have some good ole fashion freaky naughty time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. El Buco Realisto Says:

  11. Afo Says:

Bucs have herd the ship and shop off the TO machine
    Go Bucs!

  12. Afo Says:

Bucs have herd the sheep and the sheep is Jamies Winston.
Time to put El Bucs Realist and Ntard in the pen.
    Go Bucs !

  13. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I think the Bucs finally have a competent coaching staff, if not one of the best group of coaches in the league. On paper, we look like a top 5 team. We just need to prove it by making it deep into the playoffs.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

El Buco Realisto , I think you have stuck “!” key on your keyboard. Not only is it poor grammar but it turns people off from reading your post.

  15. Steven007 Says:

Alabama, he’s a one-note troll as is the dog. Notice the dog doesn’t comment on posts anymore that don’t talk about the quarterback so he can’t insert his JW obsession. El Realtatdo has a similar obsession except it’s with Mike Smith. That’s why at least once a week he will repaste the same garbage talking about points per game with zero context. He’s been called out by many thoughtful posters who use logic but obviously tire of trying to combat the stupidity.

  16. Afo Says:

Ndog is only on this blog to hate, he hardly contribute in any discussion except it’s about quarterback

  17. K2 Says:

I remember the Bears were in the Bowles hunt. I’m very happy he’s on our side.

  18. David Conley Says:

Yeah, I seem to recall it was the Chicago Bears at the time, and people were surprised he’d choose Bucs rather than coach Kahlil Mack et al. The Vic Fangio squad had a good defense going.

  19. Hodad Says:

There’s a big difference saying you’ll come as a DC as apposed to committing to be a teams HC. I’d hardly call it pulling a McDaniels.

  20. SufferingSince76 Says:

Can you imagine what it must be like to have to be around the usual trolls on a daily basis? Pissing matches on every occasion. Telling people they are idiots and clueless if they aren’t agreed with. Word on the street is they have no friends and their families won’t claim them.

  21. BillyBucFan Says:

I really hope he stays on even when the Bucs have success this year.
Can’t imagine him not wanting to coach defense for a team that has TB12 as the QB.

And I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I can’t see him retiring if he does indeed win a SB this year or next.

Just too damn fun what is building.

  22. El Buco Realisto Says:

Not surprising that there are “liars” on this coaching staff!!!!!!!!!!! As they say, teams take on the personality of the head coach!!!!!!!!!! One just has to go back to last offseason for all the BS old stale biscuit spewed in front of cameras and microphones!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure there is some pitiful excuse and someone else’s fault why toilet bolwes committed and then welched!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is time to herd the sheep, and put them back in the pen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Realist … “Not surprising that there are “liars” on this coaching staff!!!!!!!!!!!”

Too early for bullcrap like that Realist. Go back to sleep until, oh say midnight or so. Most of us are probably asleep by then or thereabouts. Except for one of the Joes. We’ll let him play with you for awhile. Be careful though, he’s the dungeon master.

  24. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

This stuff happens every offseason. You make a verbal commitment, but until a contract is signed, you are free to take a better job….just like any other profession. I seriously doubt that a lot of NFL coaches are “mad” at BA and the Bucs. Happens all the time, then you move on.

  25. Steven007 Says:

Suffering, thanks for using the phrase word on the street first without quotes, since that seems just silly, and also in the proper context. What a welcome change.

  26. TOM Says:

Who cares what Dungy thinks or says. He’s an idiot & terrible father. Enough with the father Dungy crap.

  27. Ship Thief Says:

If BA retires in 2 years, or 3, or 10…
Why would he have ANY input as to the next HC?
Only if he moves to the front office at OneBucPlace would this make sense (not retirement).

He would no longer be working for the Bucs at the point that he retires.
And the Bucs would be looking EVERYWHERE for their next head coach, not just from within our own coaching ranks.

I believe in this staff for sure, but if we are already making plans for Bowles (or anyone else) to be our NEXT coach… then we are putting the cart waaaay before the horse.

I just don’t think that things work this way very often.

We have a LOT of games that need to be won (or lost) before this is even worth thinking about.

  28. SOEbuc Says:

2018- Mike Smith- Close to the worst defense in NFL history. Bowels came in freshman year with a bunch of good coaches and we had the best running defense. A top five front sevenn. And young DBs with high ceilings that with a couple years under Bowels could be very good. Very excited about moving up to sophomore season with this returning defense. Possible DE in the first round next year.

“Build through the draft is looking good”-Jason Licht. Sounding better now these kids have coaches. Possible DE in the first next year.

  29. NDog is an idiot Says:

NDog is now just on the Saints web sites!! Telling them how much better JayMiss is than Drew Brees!!

  30. K2 Says:

It wasn’t the Bucs…all good here!

  31. OBP Says:

Pretty sure the team in question was Chicago, we know that they requested an interview with Bowles to become their DC after Fangio left to become Denver’s new HC.

  32. Cash money Says:

I think he’s doing agreat job with are defensive…go Todd bowls
