Star Power

May 8th, 2020

“Tom, you are my brightest star.”

As Joe is typing this here post, it is roughly about 20 hours after the Bucs’ 2020 schedule was released. And Joe is still is in disbelief.

Five primetime games. Five!

This is so surprising for a couple of reasons. The first, of course, is the Bucs are rarely on prime time. The last time was on Sunday Night Football when the Bucs collapsed in the fourth quarter in a close game with the Cowboys on the road. (No, Joe doesn’t count Thursday nights>)

And generally, in the post-Chucky era, the Bucs are awful playing under the lights. And of course, the Bucs have been an NFL fire hydrant the past decade in a neighborhood full of dogs.

The NFL is a business. TV networks pay billions annually to air games that attract eyeballs. The Bucs, since Chucky left, have not exactly been must-see TV (too often the team has played must-hide-your-eyes football).

So why have the Bucs jumped from virtually hidden in the attic with a crazy uncle by the NFL to now scheduled for a record number of primetime games?

Joe called it right away: star power. And that star is none other than Tom Brady.

There may be no bigger star in the NFL. How many NFL players are married to a supermodel (who is richer than Brady), has more Super Bowl rings than kids and is allowed nearly two hours to chat on Howard Stern’s show?

Yes, Brady is certainly the NFL’s Polaris.

Even Adam Schefter, the uber NFL insider of BSPN, agrees that it is the North Star of the Bucs that will have the Bucs playing under the stars this fall.

Joe doesn’t believe Team Glazer could have imagined in their wildest dreams how the Bucs have gone from almost ignored to being the talk of the nation. With one guy signing a contract, the Bucs are now one of the top subjects of chatter from Stern’s show to TMZ to the weekday yenta TV hollerfests, and across every sports platform known to man.

This is the year we should of had multiple ROH inductees. Our record is terrible and we have lost 5 in a row if I’m not mistaken.

  3. Ivan The Insider Says:

I’m in here earlier before the freakin Winston-Whiners post a comment on how they wish we weren’t “selling out” for a 1-2 year run and how they wish we were building for the next 10+ years.

    LOLZ.

In FIVE YEARS, from his 1st season to his 5th, Winston “progressed” to 7-9.

We tried the “Rebuilding Plan” and haven’t been to the playoffs in 12 YEARS.

Pardon me, but I’d prefer making a run at it NOW over the short term rather than thinking some grand plan will come together for the long haul. Too much parity in the NFL and free agency can change a team in a hurry.

    just win baby…..

  5. Ndog Says:

So now it’s the QBs fault it took 5 and a half years to build a decent defense?

Is there anything you don’t blame the QB for Ivan The Idiot?

  6. Bird Says:

    ^^^

You said the defense last year was garbage
Do i need to go into the archives?

  7. Phil Says:

I just hope we don’t embarrass ourselves.

  8. Bird Says:

Ndog is a grown man people

    Can you believe that?
    I think its funny

  9. Ndog Says:

The defense was HORRIBLE last year until the last several weeks is anybody here actually going to debate that? Seriously???

  10. Ndog Says:

Someone on ESPN just said our defense was good last year, seriously they said we were good! It just shows they don’t watch our games and have been brainwashed by the lying, backstabbing coach we have here, just like some of you.

  11. Youngbucs Says:

These comment sections are like a bad rerun 🤯

  12. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, the defense was bad the first part of last year. Who cares? That was last year. Part of becoming an adult is knowing when to move on and not continue to wallow in your sorrow. It’s over, let it go.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I understand that their will be a celebrity charity golf event featuring:

Tiger Woods & Peyton Mnning vs Phil Michelson & Tom Brady…..

Now, I don’t want to pick on Jameis but if you replaced Brady with Jameis…..what sort of ratings would it get and what sort of funds would it raise…

No, it’s not entirely Jameis’ fault the Bucs didn’t get prime time games…..but he is at least partially to blame.

And, there I go….like Joe, making this about Jameis….shame on me.

  14. Youngbucs Says:

No ndog but you’ve been brainwashed by a lying backstabbing player. Yea I know go ahead argue with your self about it. I’m not gonna argue but that double standard is real.

  15. Youngbucs Says:

By the the ndog since you’re to busy crying 😭 what game to you look forward to. Speak on that you know some normal football talk for a change.

  16. Bird Says:

If defense was good Only the last severAl weeks.

Then why did bucs lose last 2 weeks ?

And your excuse will be duh. No godwin. No evans

Or do i need to go into the archives.

  20. Ndog Says:

Yes Bird when someone plays like garbage I say it just like I did with Jameis in the Houston game. We lost the last two games cause in the Houston game Jameis played poorly and in the Atlanta game we lost cause Matt Gay sucked. I have only posted that like 1,000 times.

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

THIS is the most compelling NFL story this year for many reasons on many levels.

There is the obvious drama…all time greatest coach? all time greatest QB…undoubtedly..six rings…all time greatest franchise. Now it’s getting broken up. Will one of the pieces turn out more valuable than the other? Stay tuned.

The age old questions about aging athletes and when they should call it quits.

And now we bring the Hollywood aspect…the buddy movie..Tom and Rob ride off into the sunset for one last adventure. How will it turn out.

The records and playoffs are important to the real NFL fans…that buddy movie…two old dudes trying to ride out winners…that’s the story that will overwhelm even reality if the Bucs win. Marginal…do we call them “fair weather” fans will be along for the ride if Tom and Rob start tearing it up.

  27. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I’ll bite Joe, not sure what you would consider a ‘start’ so I did the first four games and the first game of the last 14 years for the Saints.

Since 2006, the Saints are 28-28 in the first quarter of the season.

Since 2006, the Saints are 6-8 in season openers.

The last two season the Saints opened the season 3-1. Last year they won the opener and the other one, well we know what happened there.

    Now the Bucs:

Since 2006, the Bucs are 21-35 in the first quarter of the season.

Since 2006, the Bucs are 5-9 in season openers.

The last 3 years we are 2-2 in the first quarter.

What does it all mean? Well by your logic we are sitting pretty because the Saints are “notorious slow starters”.
By your logic, the Saints should be lickin their chops since we are even more notorious for being slow starters. That doesn’t even consider the team’s continuity this season.

So ether your argument is hogwash or your point about slow starts actually points to more trouble for the Bucs, not less.

    Cant argue FACTS.

  28. Steven007 Says:

Youngbuc, you’re on a roll dude! And your comment at 4:38 was spot-on!

  29. JustBucNwin Says:

Well we got what we wanted as far as attention…can’t go a day without a Bucs segment on any given sports show! Love it, but hope they come ready to ball out cause there is a HUGE target on our backs! Go Bucs!!!!!!

  30. Tye Says:

its not fair to the other players BUT it is the way it is..Teams are known for their QB..
Star power is a way sports has always marketed…
The Headliner is the main act people are familiar with so they are willing to pay to watch ..
Since Who.. Jeff Garcia I guess (made known playing with 49ers), the Bucs have showcased a cast of nobodies at qb that could not hack it and have been sent packing…

Tom Brady has now changed all that and its only been a short few weeks…
no telling how many more opportunities will come to the Bucs in the coming season!

  31. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

We should see if Warford would sign with us on a cheaper revenge type contract. Only 29 years old and would give us a better option than Cappa at RG imo.

  32. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

About our defense last season. When JPP came back we went to another level. The young guys should continue improving for the most part. We have serious talent on all 3 levels and should be fun to watch!

  33. Bucnjim Says:

We all have our opinions about this years team, but for me it’s about leadership. This subject doesn’t get as much press because some write it off as not needed. For me one of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of a good NFL team is on the field leadership. Well let’s look at the offense starting with Brady. Even if his physical skills have slightly diminished his demand for perfection has already made current players take notice. Then they add Gronk one of the most respected TE’s of all time! Not because of his TD’s but his willingness to sacrifice his body for his team and teammates. Other offensive leaders: Jensen, Evans, Marpet. Defense we were able to resign both JPP and Suh. These guys both demand players be held accountable. The team is better with them on the field. Other defensive leaders: Lavonte David & Devin White. When you play next to players who demand perfection you can’t help but elevate your own game.

  34. JP09 Says:

Once again a dog shows us how confused he is. The Bucs did not lose the Falcons game because Matt Gay sucked, no in fact we lost the game because our QB threw a pick 6 in OT. Now I’f you were to say Fay lost us the Giants game I could see that since he missed the game winning FG but I would counter that with the fact he scored the only 3 points in the second half and the “franchise qb” couldn’t put a TD drive together against a poor D when it mattered. Why is it you want everyone else to blame everyone player minus Winston yet other than the Hou game you will not blame him? Dude he f@cking sucks, he can’t diagnose a Defense pre snap, during the play or after he threw his INT, it has nothing to do with arm strength just what’s between the ears

  35. Buczilla Says:

This is what happens when you get a legitimate franchise quarterback, who also happens to be the best football player in history. Now if we could just find a proven starting running back…

  36. Joe in Michigan Says:

I see where the Saints cut Larry Warford…If the Bucs could make some cap room, maybe he could battle it out with Cappa for the Right Guard starting position.

  37. Ship Thief Says:

    Ndog,
    Please answer me.
What team do you want to win the next super bowl?

  38. Ship Thief Says:

    Warford just got cut…
How much cap space we got?

  39. adam from ny Says:

the nfl is in our corner this year…

    and so are the referees…

don’t sleep, we’re gonna be getting some good calls!…

and watch how many mofos get roughing the passer penalties in the first couple weeks vs. brady…

i guarantee a roughing the passer call week one against cam jordan…

he thinks he’s getting all on brady…but he’s not

  40. Ivan The Insider Says:

    Ndog,

No, it’s not Winston’s fault the Defense took awhile to build. It’s Winston’s fault that over FIVE YEARS in the NFL he wasn’t making major strides to improving upon his turnovers & bad decision making. He has TERRIBLE footwork and for stretches of games completely loses his accuracy. He was the SAME WAY at FSU and the very reason many analysts were skeptical about making him the #1 overall selection due to those weaknesses.

So yeah, 5 years later without a lot of improvement on his weaknesses is a major problem.

  41. Ivan The Insider Says:

    Ship Thief,

Ndog will live & die this season praying the Saints win the Super Bowl so he can make the claim (if Winston is still on the roster) of “I told you Winston would leave and win a Super Bowl somewhere else!”

  42. Joe in Michigan Says:

FYI: Brady is 2-0 vs. New Orleans since Cam Jordan’s been there. Jordan has 1 sack in the 2 games.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Idealy, the star power of Brady would allow us to get someone like Warford for veteran league minimum because he’d want revenge, and to play with Brady. Personally I think the team needs to stock up on o-lineman, if they can in any way afford him, they need to grab him. Cappa was fine last year, but there’s no way that Warford isn’t better – and even if I’m wrong it would be some great depth to have. Remember how insanely God awful the o-line depth was last preseason? That’s why you need more than just one backup swing player on the line.

So Brady, go give a sales job – throw in that there’s no state income tax, so while he’d be taking a $6m cut, it will only really be like a $5.75m cut.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

Ivan – Winston literally lead the league in passing, set every offensive record for the team, had the team in the top-5 offenses in the NFL in 3 out of 5 years, and was top 10 in what, 4 out of 5? Before Winston, in the entire history of the team, they only had one top 10 finish.

Since 2015, Winston has had the NFL’s worst defense, the NFL’s worst kicking game and since 2016 has played the NFL’s hardest schedule.

Pretending as if Winston held the team back is pure nonsense. I was for, and I still am for, signing Brady – he’s the GOAT, and he’s a mega super star. However, at the same time, I posted back right after this happened that I hope the one thing that doesn’t happen is he signs with New Orleans, sits on the bench for a year and then lights up the Bucs for 40 points a game for the next 15 years.

Going back to Brady thought, you have to take the shot now if you get it. The team is dead in the water – and Brady, as we know from the national TV games, makes them relevant again. With that said, in 3 years, this is probably going to look really stupid, but the Bucs need to win and have excitement now before the Glazers start talking about moving the team to London (note when they did put money into the stadium a couple of years ago, they declined to sign an extension on their stadium deal, and it will only be a few more years before they start talking about wanting a new stadium).

The team didn’t win because Winston had the NFL’s worst defense and kicking game for 5 years. The kicking game alone last year cost the team 2 games, that makes them 9-7 and almost certainly means Winston is still the starting QB right now. Pretending as if that isn’t the case is nonsense.

  45. Patrickbucs Says:

    Rod,

Fitz is in the HOF with the same team, it’s over.

NDOG: the d sucked against SF and Carolina to start the season? Huh

  46. Anonymous Says:

Winston has a great arm no one can deny that. He needs to find humility to be great. He needs to listen and learn . So far he has humiliated himself and Tampa for his actions on and off the field. Jameis grow up and learn how to keep your mouth shut and I’m sure you will get better. HUMILITY that is the answer Jameis. Best of luck.

  47. Ivan The Insider Says:

    Rod Munch,

You stated “Pretending as if Winston held the team back is pure nonsense.”

HAHAHA. Were you actually serious in making that statement?

Of course he held back the team. He had turnover problems at FSU and had them for the Bucs for all 5 years. Who cares that he put up some big numbers.

You think Tiger Woods is going to have a chance at winning the Masters if he make 7 birdies in a row (which would be incredible golf) but then triple-bogeys the next 3 holes?

That’s Winston’s career in a nutshell. His positives at times are impressive but his mistakes are downright soul-crushing and detrimental to winning football games.

    AND ONCE AGAIN…

Why oh why did 31 Teams in the NFL take a huge PASS on Winston? The guy signed almost a minimum deal just to stay in the league.

  48. Sport Says:

I do like JW’s choice joining the Saints. He probably could’ve taken the backup role at Jville (now occupied by recently signed Mike Glennon). He would’ve been interesting competition/backup for Minshew.

However, JW also may end up being cut before the season starts.

Rebuilding for him will be tough. I’m pulling for him.

    In BA I Trust!

  49. Ndog Says:

Yeah the Saints are going to cut Jameis. You people might be the biggest bunch of idiots on the planet. You seriously say the stupidest crap, because you literally have no idea what you are talking about. And you ask the same questions over and over then I answer them and two days later there you are asking the same stupid questions again.

Also I love how a kicker can miss 2 FGs in the fourth quarter of a game the requires the other team to hit a last FG to send it to OT is not to blame for that loss. Again the most idiotic football fans on the face of the Earth post on this site. People literally get dumber by reading your stupidity.

So let’s see tommorow the morons will ask the questions below again:

Why did 31 teams not sign Jameis right away?
Why is Jameis paid so little?
Will Jameis even make the team in NO?
If Jameis is so great why didn’t he win in five years?

Again I have very clearly answered every one of you idiots multiple times and if you’re simply to stupid, drunk or idiotic to remember stop posting on this site and get some help cause Im sure I speak for everyone when I say we are tired of your be CLUELESSNESS.

If you don’t understand FOOTBALL JUST GO AWAY!!!

  54. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

@Rod – like your posts- great observations.

Bucs have 5 Primetime games because Tompa Brady is QB and nation wants to see what Tompa does w/o Belichick and learn if the PATs 6 rings were because of Tom or Bill. Fun times for Bucs. Tompa Brady will have benefit of improved Bucs D and 2nd year stud-Kicker who exercised his demons in 2019. Offensive weapons are obvious. Bucs should win 12+ games and be in SB, period. Amazing set-up for Tompa GOAT to prove he is KING! And did not need Bill.

Covid-19 is lame excuse for Bucs apologists. Every team has same issues. Tompa is already pushing the NFL rules, as expected from Alpha GOAT > eff-rules, git’er done QB! Do I need to extrapolate for other prep activities??? Hmm…

Regarding JW > Bucs will not face JW in 2020. Brees is work-out freak in great shape and will be Saints 2020 QB for 95% snaps. Payton may insert JW for mop-up duty in a few games to give JW some snaps, if situations allows. JW will benefit by bench
observation view, afforded to Aaron Rogers and Patrick Mahomes during their rookie years, albeit delayed for JW > under great tutelage from Payton.

Next stop for JW? Who knows? Betting JW will have amazing success at next opportunity.

Arians has to deliver SB to Bucs fans per his short-term BET! For me, SB win in 2020 or 2021 is only result justifying moving on from JW.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

Ivan – You dullards are soo boring (thus why I guess you’re called dullards). The turnovers happened because he was down 21-3 to start the 2nd quarter in like half the games in his career. Again, the WORST defense in the NFL over 5 years. The WORST kicking gave in the NFL over 5 years. The BEST offense, by far, in team history.

But yeah, it was the offense that was causing the team to lose.

God damn are you people stupid.

I’m for the Brady signing but idiots like you make that difficult.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

REDZONE – I’m not too worried about Winston this year, what I’m worried about is everything seems to indicate that Brees is gone after this year — he’s already being talked about being in the MNF booth in 2021. Payton has Hill, who people claim is a QB and the QB of the future (note that Hill is 3 years older than Winston), and Payton drafted a QB… Payton didn’t sign Winston just to kick the tires – that’s what I’m afraid of. He’s bringing him in to see what he can do – I mean as a 25 year old Winston because one of 6 people to throw for over 5000 yards, and just had over 30 TDs. Winston will make a few bad plays, but many, many of those INTs last year were due to guys running the wrong routes, guys tipping the ball in the air, or being down multiple scores late in the 4th. If Winston had that Saints defense and running game, he throws 12 INTs last year while putting up 4500 yards and 30+ TDs – and I’m afraid that’s what we have to look forward to until Winston is 42 years old.

Think of that, and this isn’t a knock on Brady, but if Winston sits this year, doesn’t start until next season for New Orleans, then plays 15 years – he’d still be younger than Brady is now… Wow.

Anyways, again, I think the team (mostly) did the right thing here. If you have a legit shot at a SB, then you take it, and Brady gives them that shot. However I also thought this was going to be an 11-5 team next year under Winston — I mean this year they should have been 9-7 if Gay makes his kicks, and the refs screwed us out of the Tennessee game they’d have been 10-6. The two games cost by Gay are absolute loses on the kicker – plus the defense in the first half of the season was one pace to be the worst in team history — which is saying something.

All of that is to say that people should be excited, at least for this year, with Brady — and obviously people are. At the same time I can not take the morons with the Winston bashing, literally, by far, the best offense in team history – while having the worst defense and a kicking game that every year cost the team a game or two, and these dopes are pretending like Winston was the only thing holding the team back. It’s just a boring bumper sticker / sports talk radio garbage that I can’t stand.

You don’t try to teach sheep mathematics, you just watch them eat poop and baaaaaaa at everything all day. Let the sheep be.

  60. lambchop Says:

    @Rod Munch,

Lets play along with your Jameis Winston fantasy that he comes for revenge next year. The problem with your logic is, if he’s lighting us up for 40, it’ll be once again because he’s thrown 2 pick-6’s and a couple INTs to put his team in pass mode by halftime.

He got his yards thanks to having to play catch up. Some of it’s the defenses fault, and some of it is his fault. With your logic, Brees should be hanging 40 on teams cuz he’s clearly one of the greatest QBs. The Saints offense will be way different with Jameis. Sean Peyton won’t hesitate to bench him if he starts throwing picks or throws into double, triple coverage. Peyton didn’t draft him, so he doesn’t have to watch a QB shart all over himself.

  61. 541BucsFan Says:

Not so much for Casual Fans like yourself.

    Especially soul-crushing for Bruce Arians.

Now you get to watch the Saints, praying for QB broken legs while JC is holding a clipboard.

  65. Ivan The Insider Says:

    NDOG,

You giving your “cognitive bias” answers to people’s legitimate criticism of Jameis Winston’s terrible 5 years with the Bucs does not in anyway “set the record straight” and make things FACTUAL.

That’s what is both hilarious and obvious that you were dropped on your head as a child and just aren’t very intelligent.

You can ‘cherry-pick’ all the positives about Jameis you want and continue to give a realistic analysis of his vast weaknesses and inconsistent play and it still doesn’t ‘excuse’ Jameis for his 5 years of mediocre play.

He has INT problems AND fumble problems. He makes very bad decisions and goes through moments of that terrible footwork and inaccuracy.

You think his not being grabbed up by another team when he hit the market was some sort of CONSPIRACY THEORY against Arians or others working behind the scenes to keep him from being signed. This is a JOKE. The NFL is a super competitive business. Any team that really valued him highly would have jumped all over him and made a deal happen.

You are truly the FLAT EARTHER of Bucs fans. You’ve become so strongly a believer in your cognitive dissociations with reality that you’ve dug your heels in and believe what you believe and what waver from that, won’t consider other facts, and simply respond by calling people idiots.

It’s very simple… any position and player in the NFL can be evaluated in a vacuum. You can look at that player’s performances independent of bad defense or bad kicking or some drop balls. You can put aside from the wins & losses. That player can still be evaluated & analysis for what they did over a long period of time.

Winston’s analysis… very inconsistent. Many days he played stretches of a game like he was a rookie and didn’t understand how to read NFL defenses.

If you can’t understand that Winston has been incredibly inconsistent, despite putting big numbers from time to time (just like Fitzpatrick has been known to do in his career) then you’re BLIND.

Maybe Jameis’ head, just like the earth, truly is flat.
