Serious Talk Of Extending Ryan Griffin’s Conract

May 18th, 2020

Like any NFL backup quarterback, Ryan Griffin has a sect of fans (that extend beyond his family) who believe he can be a quality starter.

But Griffin is different than most.

He’s 30 years old and has taken fewer regular-season snaps than the number of Big Storm beers Joe inhales after a Bucs game.

Griffin is a true NFL nobody, an undrafted unknown entering his eighth season. But that mystery, combined with him spending years around Sean Payton, Drew Brees, Dirk Koetter and Bruce Arians, has former Jets personnel man and Bucs scout Pat Kirwan calling for Griffin to get a contract extension now.

Kirwan’s logic, as expressed on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week, is that Griffin is in the final year of his Bucs contract and the team should protect itself in case he plays well this season if Tom Brady gets hurt, and because they’ve invested in grooming him.

Also, Kirwan thinks Griffin should get a contract extension because Blaine Gabbert already has shown what he is and the Bucs didn’t draft a rookie QB in their second draft with Bruce Arians.

“Sixteen points a game when he’s been a starter, 13-35 [record], a sack every 12 pass plays, two touchdowns in his last 146 throws,” Kirwan said of Gabbert.

Joe thinks this is just a wild case of backup quarterback syndrome. Other than Griffin showing coaches enough in practice to stay employed, there is zero evidence that Griffin is a capable NFL player. There’s nothing smart about extending Griffin’s contract now, especially given the Bucs’ salary cap situation and a strong chance the cap goes down next season.

Also, Joe expects the Bucs to draft a quarterback next year, which would just about render Griffin useless to the franchise.

If we had a preseason ROH Griff would be a lock.

  2. 2020 Year of the GOAT Says:

resign him…. pay him or get a better option … ???

  3. El Buco Realisto Says:

“Word on the street” is that ole stale biscuit was/is so mad at Jay-miss contract demands, that he wants to make sure his 3rd string qb is paid more than 3rd string jay-miss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the no excuses of no-excuses years”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s time to herd the sheep, and put them back in the pen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Mikadeemas Says:

Yeah, that would be a head scratcher. It kinda has been all along. Use that roster spot on a back up kicker, lol. GO BUCS!!

  5. 813bucboi Says:

idk about drafting one next year…lol…

we could have Brady for 2years and maybe say Rodgers for 2 years with blaine or griffin being the back up….both players wouldve been in the system for a while and as BA stayed, their wont be a competition or threat to the starter….why spend a early pick on a QB when your the 1 you have is good enough to win now…thats why rodgers is mad now…lol…would a rookie 4th round qb be able to beat out a vet thats been in the system 3,4years?….

if the staff thinks griffin is good enough to be on the final 53, so be it…resign him but dont break the bank….imo, consistency is key at all levels when your trying to build a consistent winner…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

The Bucs already have 10 other players on the roster who would be better 3’rd string QBs. Send him packing. He sux

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

I would sell the farm in 2021 for Tyler Lawrence.

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

El Buco Realisto: It already is.

    Ryan Griffin’s salary: $1,125,000
    Jameis Winston’s salary: $1,100,000

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Personally think that Ryan Griffin has been underrated all these years, largely because he was a backup behind 2 entrenched starting QBs, Drew Brees & Jameis Winston. No one REALLY knows how he’d perform if given a real chance to play say for a season, or even half a season.

I find it interesting that THREE undrafted FAs roomed together here in Tampa … TE Cam Brate, WR Adam Humphries and QB Ryan Griffin … and TWO of them make it big in terms of second contracts. I remember reading several years ago how the 3 of them practiced so much together, working to get better. Makes one wonder how much of their success that Brate & Humphries owe to Griffin. MAYBE, just MAYBE, Ryan’s better than folks give him credit for.

  10. Joe in Michigan Says:

Kirwan’s worried about the Bucs 3rd String QB’s contract? Is he worried about MJ Stewart’s contract, too? Slow news day, obviously.

  11. Nick2 Says:

Actually Kirwin is right on point. Backup quarterback is pretty serious business when you have a 43 year old starter and Blaine Gabbert is a terrible option. Why he is still in the NFL is beyond me. Ryan Griffin has shown ability to lead the team in consecutive preseason games. We need to sign him to an extension now or be stuck with Blaine (I’ll never win you a game) Gabbert.

  12. TheBradyBunch Says:

I have never heard of Tyler Lawrence and therefore I doubt they should sell the farm to get him next year. Now there is a QB from Clemson with the same last name but his name is Trevor!

  13. ItzOK Says:

Itz a joke lets anoint Ryan Griffin. Heck he has only completed 4 less passes than Taysom Hill in his entire career. You probably missed those if you were at the concession stand at the start of the second half that game. Yet Ryan Griffin with no experience is going to be our back up during the Wuhan flu season when the one season you really better have a good back up. Lets just call it say he will be our starter in 2 years. I don’t see it happening for Griffin. Hell you could sign Cam Newton for crist sake. By the way there is zero chance Taysom hill will be the Saints starting QB next year as Jameis will take over for Brees.

  14. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

And we are discussing the THIRD quarterback because…….???????

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    LOL

    3rd stringer QB discussion threat…..hillarious

  16. D-Rome Says:

Ryan Griffin’s career would have looked a little different if he didn’t get injured in the 2017 pre-season. He was winning that job over Ryan Fitzpatrick that year prior to the injury.

I would have liked to see Griffin get at least a start or two in one of the myriad of lost seasons since he’s been here. Then again, if he started the final two games last year then the Saints’ 3rd string backup would have been given a $30 million a year contract which would have been disastrous for the franchise. Besides, if he was something special then some other QB needy team would have been calling for him a long time ago.

  17. Bradinator Says:

He is getting talked about because we have a 43 yr old starter, and his back up is a guy with a shaky record AND he’s coming off a season ending surgery. He is also on a 1 year deal. He could very well see the field at some point this season or next. All we see is pre-season. Arians, Peyton, Koetter all have seen “something” in the guy. He was our #1 back-up last season. Who are we to say he can’t play? If Arians says “sign him”, I can’t really argue with the guy.

  18. Bradinator Says:

BTW, they are talking about our 3rd string QB. Be happy!! Last year this time no one cared enough about us to bring us up, except for jokes.

  19. ocala Says:

I don’t think this is anywhere close to being on the radar of Jason Licht.

  20. Mike Says:

El Buco with another shot at the coach? Nooooo he would never do that. Thank you once again for your Super fresh take!!!!!!!!!

  21. CrackerBall Says:

“Serious Talk Of Extending Ryan Griffin’s Contract”

    … but why?

  22. Griffin Greatness Says:

As a Fanpage for the best preseason QB of all time, I would sure hope that we extend his contract. We know what we are getting with Gabbert but Ryan is a wildcard. Why settle with Gabbert when Ryan could be a great backup in case Tom goes down (which is likely because Donovan Smith is still at LT). I’m glad I’m not the only one that wants him to stay. Follow @griffin.greatness on Instagram if you want to look at an Instagram Instagram account that post about Mr.August himself.

  23. LJsDaddy Says:

    Griffin>Gabbert

  24. Zwak Says:

Zero evidence because the kid has never been given a real chance in a live game. We have no idea what he can do in a real game playing with the starters?
Give him a chance or cut him loose.

  25. Joe in Michigan Says:

Sure…Gabbert is terrible, Griffin is great…Because he looked good in the 4th Quarter of some preseason games…Sure.

  26. Craig Says:

The only head to head between Gabbert and Griffin was last preseason.

Gabbert stunk and Griffin was a star.

The drawback of his career is who he backed up. I think Jameis was afraid of having him get in a game. Jameis wouldn’t come out when he hurt his knee and he was out for three plays when he hurt his thumb.

Part of that was to keep Griffin out.

If there is real competition this year Griffin will be the number 2 QB and we might actually find out the last big question about the Bucs.

  27. Buczilla Says:

Licht’s philosophy of half a$$ing the running back position and backup quarterback position is downright bizarre.

  28. Joe in Michigan Says:

To say Blaine Gabbert is an “I’ll never win you a game” QB isn’t altogether true, his team has won 13 games when he was a starter. They also lost 35, teams he was on were awful, because, well, he was the starter! Hahaha
I don’t understand the love for Ryan Griffin, there’s a reason he’s number 3, IMHO. It probably will help him with the offense going to shorter routes with Tom Brady being the man now. If Griffin was a pitcher in baseball, I’d guess that his fastball would top out at 88 MPH, or so.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Gabbert shouldn’t be here at all. Griffin is a risk, but a healthy one.

Year-to-year is all we need with Griffin right now. If Brady is injured and Grif does really well, then he’ll deserve a raise. It’s not like teams are beating on his door.

To be honest, I’m hoping the right undrafted guy gets cut from a team.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As to Griffin being the third string, that remains to be seen. Gabbert hasn’t earned the second spot.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The thing about Griffin is that he is most!y an unknown. Although it is likely he’ll never amount to much, there is always that slim chance that he could have shined if given the opportunity.

It was the same thing with Mike Glennon and Chris Simms. You don’t know until you know.

  32. Kord Says:

If this guy has survived multiple head coaches then he has some obvious skills, preseasons alone deserve him a roster spot. Any other coaches than the ones we had would have thrown him into the fire over Jameis long ago. Give the dude an extension, smart move

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

One slight problem with the theory that Gabbert isn’t number 2…Bruce Arians says he’s number 2. BA is kind of a big deal.

  34. Bojim Says:

Hasn’t played a game in eight years. Still rather play him than Gabbert.

  35. Oneilbucs Says:

LOL LOL WE ARE GOING TO BE THE ARIZONA CAROLINAS WHEN THIS FRAUD COACH LEAVES …. EVEN IF WE WIN THE SUPERBOWL THE FUTURE OF THE TEAM WILL BE SET BACK 3 OR 5 YEARS .

  36. Joe in Michigan Says:

Even if we win the Super Bowl? That wouldn’t make you happy?

  37. BucsFan81 Says:

Griffin is better than Gabbert. I still don’t know how Gabbert is on the roster after what he showed in pre season last year.

  38. Joe in Michigan Says:

Gabbert has started 48 more games than Griffin, and thrown for 48 more TD’s. Griffin is the younger of the 2, by about a month.

  39. adam from ny Says:

    yep…we’re all set…

    brady for 2 years…

    then…

    arron rodgers for 2 years…

us bucs fans are getting waaay ahead of the spoiling curve…

    or so it seems 🙂

  40. adam from ny Says:

    sheeeeesh… i’ll take it tho 🙂

  41. diggler Says:

I love the idiots saying Ryan Griffin sux. How do you know? You haven’t seen him play but like 20 snaps. Or better yet, he’s got a noodle arm, how do you know? Ya’ll STFU.

  42. Owlykat Says:

Ryan Griffin is good playing against third string defenses in preseason and he is 30 years old and his 20 snaps in a NFL Game was his opportunity to show what he can do in season against a first string NFL Defense and it was pathetic. So offer him a practice squad salary and put him on the practice squad. If Gabbert went down you could elevate him to play the next game.

  43. Owlykat Says:

And this preseason alternate him with Reid Sinnett as QB of the Third String Offense. If Sennett outplays him elevate Sennett to sit by Brady and learn from him and stick Griffin on the Practice Squad.

  44. TOM Says:

Griffin should be the back up. Get rid of Gabbert.

  45. Joe in Michigan Says:

Well, Bruce Arians is the Coach. He seems to have more say-so in this than you.

  46. Ozziethesportsjunkie Says:
