“I’m Trying To Make Sure I Establish Myself As One Of The Smartest Guys On The Field”
May 28th, 2020Last week during a Zoom chat with media, Joe asked Devin White a question that prompted the second-year savior linebacker to reference his guns and flex.
White handles barn duty personally for his stable of horses. It’s not video he can send the Bucs to prove he’s following his prescribed offsesaon training, but Joe asked White what’s the most demanding workout in the barn. White said stacking and balancing 50- or 60-pound square bales of hay is the toughest task.
“That’s probably why my guns look like this, you know,” White said as he posed as seen in the photo below. White said he’s been stacking hay since he was little kid and it’s still a grind.
But what interested Joe more was White talking about how he believes smart players are the best players.
It reminded Joe of when Kwon Alexander used to meet Mike Smith daily for early-morning study sessions to learn the nuances of the then-new Bucs defense.
“I’m trying to make sure I establish myself as one of the smartest guys on the field when I’m playing ball,” White said, adding that he wants to be the guy who can fix issues that arise for teammates.
Nobody can argue with White’s attitude. Will he take the sophomore leap that’s common among great players, especially No. 5 overall draft picks? It might be the key to the Bucs season outside of Tom Brady playing like Tom Brady and Matt Gay turning in a good year.

Barring injury white should be a very good player for a very long time. The difference between good and great players in the NFL almost always comes down to work ethic.

I was against drafting him because like Joe I wanted Edge beast Josh Allen. But, the more I see and hear from Devin White the more I appreciate him.

Maybe a big run stopping DT in the first round next year if we are closer to the bottom. Vea, White, and another young ,talented DT we could have great run defense for a long time.
