Common Sense Approach

May 11th, 2020

“Don’t call that short sh!t, Byron!”

This used to drive Joe absolutely wild watching games.

Back when former Bucs commander Greg Schiano perceived Mike Glennon to be the next Drew Bledsoe, he or his offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan doomed the Bucs. So many times Glennon would throw to targets on third downs behind the first down marker; Joe just wanted to throw his remote through the wall behind the TV.

It wasn’t like the Bucs had a bunch of burners on offense like Tyreek Hill, who could take a short pass and in the blink of an eye have a 20-yard gain.

Glennon had an arm. And the Bucs had a receiver to get open down field. Vincent Jackson was on the squad for crying out loud. But there would be Glennon, on third-and-eight, throwing to Tiquan Underwood or Chris Owusu (Schiano Men, both) three yards short of the first down marker.

Sullivan was the anti-Bucco Bruce Arians.

When it comes to running routes aimed at getting first downs, Arians (and by extension, Byron Leftwich) believe that to get a first down you must get the ball past the first down marker.

The PFF tribe documented all of the routes run last year by each NFL receiver, and none ran routes past the first down marker at a higher percentage than Breshad Perriman and Mike Evans.

To Joe this makes all the sense in the world: Get your receivers in first down territory. Don’t set up your receivers to fail, or for a defender to make a play and run your offense off the field.

I share this frustration. I do not know how a receiver breaks off a route 1 or 2 yards shy of the sticks. BRAIN DEAD!!!

I’m not sure how much is on the coaching and how much is sloppy route running which again however ends up coming back to the coaches.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

Don’t set up your receivers to fail, or for a defender to make a play and run your offense off the field.

luckily, we wont see that 30times this year….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  3. ItZok Says:

Weren’t the Bucs the third best offense in the league behind the Chiefs and Cowboys. The offense is fine They made improvements over Koetters horrible red zone offense from the previous year. Now they fix the Turnovers and invest in protection. I’m not worried about the Offense.

  4. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

Running a route PAST the 1st down marker? That’s crazy talk!

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

    “Common sense”?! Yes, yes, yes.

Throw past the sticks on 3rd down. Run to the sticks.
Find the OPEN receiver. Find open field.
Check the ball down when there’s nothing open. Help your QB on scramble plays by coming back to the ball.
Check out of a doomed play at the LOS. Call out the blitzers.
Don’t stare down your WRs. CATCH the ball.
Throw the ball away. Knock errant passes down to avoid INTs.

    You know, common sense stuff!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It would help to have a running game that achieved some yards on the 1st two downs…..so we wouldn’t have 3rd & 8…..
But, agree…..most receivers should have routes that take them past the sticks.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

Also opens up the underneath routes.

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

The pic of Perriman looks like Devin White on the field at the same time? Special teams play?

  9. K2 Says:

Do first downs matter? That must be the advanced football class…some never graduated from 1 yard and a cloud of dust.

  10. NashvilleBuc Says:

I can’t remember which, but it’s one of the 10 football commandments: “Thou shalt not run a 6 yard route on 3rd-and-8.”

  11. El Buco Realisto Says:

That is a great pic of ole stale biscuit looking at the early bird special menu!!!!!!!! I bet that old biscuit is thinking if he can make it to dinner and make it home , so he can be in pj’s and bed before 7p.m.!!!!!!!!!!

It’s time to herd the sheep, and put them back in the pen!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Isaac haggins Says:

Yep common sense math for an avg num nut but look at some of the tendencies and you will see some amazingly unacceptable trends that owners and GM s just don’t correct !!! Oh I forgot even though they are paying the coaches they might get looked down upon for judging lol !!!

  13. Joe in Michigan Says:

El Buco Fake-A-Leasto: Do you have anything else to comment on, other than that Bruce Arians is old? That’s about as weak as you can get. Please come up with some new material, it wasn’t funny the first time you said it, let alone the millionth.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

I already know what Brady, Evans, and Godwin will be doing. We have a damn fine defense and they haven’t been mentioned once. Hopefully the opposing coaches will be all over the place trying to figure out Brady and his receiver’s and not so much concentrating on Bowels sophomore season with many returning. Pumped about the classic red defense.

  15. Brandon Says:

Glennon’s arm was pathetic. The only thing worse on him was his clown feet… and maybe giraffe neck.

  16. Tye Says:

    Joe in Michigan ,

until you get in the habit of picking out which fan is worth reading their post and which just posts nonsense, it will drive you crazy every day…
those that just post the same gibberish, mostly cut and paste, adds nothing of value to the conversation.. just taking up space!

  17. Swampbuc Says:

Primo point @Joe. So well said — I may have destroyrd a remote when the floor got in the way after a Glennon third down checkdown.

  18. DBS Says:

And there is Brandon with his usual insults. About the only time you show up. To insult someone. You do know what that says about you right?

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

Hahaha, right Tye. Most of the commenters on here are great, I appreciate the people who want to talk Bucs without talking $hit…I did post that in hopes that he comes up with some new material, though.

  20. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

At any given time there are 64 elite QBs that are under contract to play in the NFL. We can even say 96 if you like.

Mike Glennon is one of 96 people who play QB in the NFL out of 330,000,000 people, not mention the worldwide population. Insulting him based on what God gave him is some lowlife sh!t man. Backup or not the guy can play QB well enough to actually get paid to do it in an elite league.

Now Brandon, tell us what you’ve achieved.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Many say…..don’t engage the trolls….and they will just go away…..WRONG…..

    It simply doesn’t matter……

I am far more bothered by the new nicknames given to Brady…..fearful that they will increase in number…..the problem is that you simply can’t skip them because they are part of the article…..not like a post you can ignore.

They are truly tiresome….I never liked “America’s Quarterback” and now it turns out that was a very, inappropriate & sad nickname.

  22. Tye Says:

I agree…. that’s why I like coming to this sight… that and Joe keeps it interesting and current for the most part (the thing with adding to names is not my cup of tea)….
I’ve been here since Gruden firing\Morris hiring or there about… usually there are some interesting insight people add to the pist… But there has always got to be those few who say a whole lot of nothing…

  23. VdubVW Says:

Hey el buco your mom called and said it’s time for your nap. Better run along kid before you a spanking.
    Big up Joe in Michigan
    Go Bucs
    Go Bolts
    Go Rays

  24. BucEmUp Says:

Agree.with this to an extent, however it also drive me nuts when they only need 5 yards and consistently push the ball 20 yards down the field

  25. DoooshLaRue Says:

Hey Joe….. is that the same Mike Sullivan you were worried about leaving the Bucs and wanted to secure him long term?

Man you’ve been wrong so many times.

I mean Silly Joe of the Nuthugger Brigade, not sane, rational Joe….. I like him.

  26. SB Says:

Guys! I am 52 and can still throw a 50 yard rope to my son.
I am not worried about TB12! This is smoke season and journalists are at home bored trying to think of controversial things to write about.

Brady hasn’t had anything like he is gonna have this season! Providing there is a season.

  27. chris L Says:

this was a main issue because we are always behind in the count due to penalties, sacks, no run game, etc. offense trying to catch up to defense and offense trying to catch up against turnovers. obviously we throw the ball down alot more but we dont need 5000 yards of offense passing to win. just be efficient.

  28. Ship Thief Says:

    So,
    No timing routes for Joe?

  29. gotbbucs Says:

It’s not all about running and passing beyond the sticks. Plenty of short passes have just as much chance to go for long gains, but you have to have an accurate pass that’s on time. The previous QB couldn’t accomplish this, the current QB has made a career out of doing it.

  30. bojim Says:

Glennon had no support. Pretty sure he did what the OC told him him to do.

  31. TomTerrific Says:

Where is Npuppy these days? Oh that’s right, he moved to New Orleans to be closer to his man crush Jamoist. He can cook Winston some of his favorite dessert, turnovers. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  32. DaBux Says:

I just watched the Madden simulation on NFL.com and if week one ends 17-0 Bucs, hell yeah, this will be a fun year.

  33. SB Says:

That was a nice watch DaBux.
    Thanks!

  34. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Seriously? I know you don’t make a journalistic claim, but please, can you move on to the future?!?!?

  35. TheDood Says:

Good thing we got Glennon (aka The Stork) and not that bum Russell Wilson (picked 2 picks later)!

  36. Cainishere Says:

Aww guys . . . play nice. Bucs rid themselves of errors by replacing Winsnone with Brady. Then they boosted the TE position by lottery and the Kicking game with Fry. They bolstered the O-Line with Wirfs and haeg. added some talent from Minnesota and brought in a try at RB. Defensively they brought almost everyone back. The Defense is primed for a super bowl run by it’s self. The coaches are just that, well coached. If you think this team will fail? . . . is just a person who is bitter. Jameis is the worlds best Paper Champion. Check your sheet.

  37. Cainishere Says:

If that is the real Dewey Selmon? YOU ARE AWESOME! I grew up watching you and your brother and you fellas created that dreaded Buccaneers defense which was all that we had to cheer about. You are number one in my book. Go BUCS!!!

  38. Joe Says:

Good thing we got Glennon (aka The Stork) and not that bum Russell Wilson (picked 2 picks later)!

Different draft. Wilson was picked in 2012 draft. Glennon a year later.

  39. Howard Cosell Says:

Yes! That IS the real Dewey Selmon!…and I am the real Howard Cosell

  40. Howard Cosell Says:

Arians (and by extension, Byron Leftwich) believe that to get a first down you must get the ball past the first down marker.

    LOL

  41. Howard Cosell Says:

Schaino: “OK Mike, it’s 3rd and 8. I’m calling a 2 yard slant to Freddie Martino because a long pass might get intercepted. Better to get 5 yards on 3rd and 8 than a turnover, right?”

    Sullivan: “Yes, my Liege.”

  42. Cainishere Says:

Okay Howard. How can you take away from the glory I bestow upon Dewey like that lol He is awesome like his brother. Those two were menacing for the Buccaneers. I miss Lee Roy.
