Brady And The Deep Ball

May 21st, 2020

“You still have it Tom.”

A lot of folks think park-violating, home-invading Bucs quarterback Tom Brady has lost something off his fastball.

The same folks believe the soon-to-be 43-year old quarterback with six rings can’t get the ball down the field like the young turks of today’s NFL.

The PFF tribe looked at stats and doesn’t think that theory is fair. In fact, they have Brady rated as the No. 14 deep-ball passer in the NFL, so claims the high priest of the tribe, Sam Monson.

14. TOM BRADY
40.2% completion percentage, 11.7 yards per attempt

Tom Brady has never been the league’s best deep passer, but like everything else in New England, his deep passing suffered from the lack of quality receivers in 2019. Brady’s numbers were solid if not spectacular, and that’s with nobody winning on a consistent basis. Transporting him into an offense with some of the best deep targets in football should see him catapulted back into the top 10 in 2020.

If Brady still has magic in his arm, this offense should be fun as can be to watch. Unless the Bucs add someone else alongside Ronald Jones (Devonta Freeman, Carlos Hyde?), they sure aren’t going to run the ball. At least not consistently.

So that tells Joe that Brady and the Bucs will be throwing early and often.

I’ll say it again, Brady will throw for 5,500 and break the single season record for yards with 40+ TDs this season. If you think he doesn’t want to push the ball down the field and prove he’s not a “system QB” your crazy. Not to mention Arians/Leftwich love to throw the ball. The Bucs will be cut throat this season, expect 35 PPG, buckle up it’s going to be f&cking awesome!!

  2. tickrdr Says:

I suspect that several Bucs’ franchise passing records will be surpassed by Brady, assuming he plays all 16 games, at least the single-season marks. JMHO.

  3. Cuz Merica Says:

Agreed. NFL.com had him as #4 last year with garbage WRs. It’s going to be a show.

If TB12 and the rest of the offense stay healthy, they are going to be a juggernaut to deal with!!

BTW I hate clowns that report that the Bucs can’t run the ball this year when they haven’t seen how Wirfs & Gronk will help to solidify the right side of the line. PLUS our new RB’s Vaughn & Calais might surprise folks.

They should have more balance this year and even increase their time of possession.

The question for defenses will be “how can you stop all these weapons” ??

  6. Crack3rK Says:

    Joe,
Winston was America’s Quaterback (now America’s Backup Quarterback) but Brady is park-violating, home-invading Bucs quarterback Tom Brady? WTF?
How about Super Hot Model Attracting, Brad Pitt Looking, Super Bowl Winning, Park Violating, Home-Invading, Bucs QB Tom Brady. Show some respect. Please!

  7. Cuz Merica Says:

Yes, our run game should be much improved. I’d like to see Vita in there to carry the rock on some goal line plays.

  8. Robert Says:

TB is gonna go balls deep on the NFL!

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Will they ever get over park-violating, home-invading Joe?

I doubt it….it’s like you hurt their feelings or something.

  10. K2 Says:

I love reading Joe Bucs Fan but please get over the “park-violating, home-invading Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.” This sucks every time (not just part of the time) you write this crap. It is both obnoxious and disrespectful dribble that is well below your standards.

  11. idiaznet Says:

The Bucs Running game should improve just on the fact that teams have to respect Tom Brady and the passing game more than they did with Winston. Honestly, most teams last year figured if you give Winston opportunities he will throw them to you. So you load up on running and make them throw. But Brady isn’t going to pick apart the zones and defenses. He won’t stare down the WR and will make you be honest, hence more holes to run through. Add in Gronk, and Wilfs it only makes since that ROJO and company will be better with the run game. Also we will not be behind so much that the run game comes off the board to catch up with lower turnovers.

  12. tickrdr Says:

Here are some single-season targets (at least 10 starts):
    Passing yards: Jameis Winston 5109
    Comp %: Brian Griese 69.3%
    TD passes: Jameis Winston 33
    TD%: Ryan Fitzpatrick 6.9%
    INTs: Jameis Winston 30
    INT%: Vinny Testaverde 7.5%
    TD/INT ratio: Josh Freeman 25 TDs/ 6 INTs = 4.17
    W-L %: Brad Johnson 10 – 3 (Agree, more of a team stat)

  13. tickrdr Says:

Almost forgot one of my favorites:

    TD% minus INT%: Josh Freeman in 2010, 5.3% minus 1.3% = 4.0

  14. ChanEpic Says:

The ONLY problem, other than uncertainty at RB, I can see with what should be a stellar offense right off the rip is the same old opponent we’ve already acknowledged. The Undefeated, FATHER TIME. I don’t care if TB has thrown for 55K yards for 80% of the season. HE NEEDS TO STAY HEALTHY IN DECEMBER(or whenever). If the Bucs can manage his health, Terrific Tom’s arm WILL NOT BE the issue.

  15. DanBucsFan Says:

I think Brady will have very good numbers, however I don’t see him having lights out numbers because IMO we will be up on teams and lean on our running game in better part of second half to protect lead/ run out the clock. I doubt every game will be this way as we do have some good teams we are playing, but he will move the ball downfield just fine. He puts ball where it needs to be and that is a fact. With matchup problems we will create for people it will be “pick your poison” and any given week someone else will be going off. But I look for our rb’s to be more productive this season with more opportunity. Remember JW racked up some serious yards playing catch up after spotting teams 10-14 point leads lol

  16. SC Bucs Fan Says:

JW could throw the deep ball. He routinely hit the deep corner square in the numbers.

  17. Craig Says:

Brady can and will throw over twenty yard passes, he will only throw them when open and will not force passes.

I still don’t understand why people think JW could throw a long ball accurately. Godwin bailed him out on so many bad throws and contested throws it blows the mind.

At the same time you can think of how Godwin will do with catching passes in stride. He might get 2k yards by himself.

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

I know we’re enamored with the long ball but lets not discount passes hitting WRs short and in stride. Oh, that, and you only need 10 yards for a 1st down.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

This is a constant joke. They brought in Brady and Gronk for $60 million for two years and the QB Whisperer didn’t have a plan in place. Jameis couldn’t connect on the long ball till last year, yet Evans is tied with Moss out of rookie year. Finally, Tom looking over a defense and accuracy compared to Jameis. This sh!t gets funnier every time I hear it.

Do y’all think it’s funny to always say this? Do you think it’s funny when you do the same thing whenever you write about Peter King?

If you do, let me let you in on a little secret. It isn’t funny. It’s annoying AF and more than a little childish.

How would you like it if every article you wanted to read had crap like this every single time you read it? You wouldn’t, yet you continue to put it here.

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

I perhaps am a bit contrarian here. I certainly believe this offense and weapons could easily allow Brady to break some records.

I’m not sure I want Brady to get records. I’d be more pleased if our Defense becomes so dominating that he can play at a Brad Johnson level….and I’m a huge Brad fan.

Kind of tough for me to figure though. On one hand if the D is outstanding and also gets it’s share of turnovers…Brady will have much more opportunity.

OTOH if the D is outstanding as I hope then Dan’s point is spot on.

“IMO we will be up on teams and lean on our running game in better part of second half to protect lead/ run out the clock.”

I agree with Dan and hope we are both right and we can start winning games like championship teams…get ahead and then close the show…step on their throats. I’ve had enough acid indigestion from “MR Excitement” to last me a lifetime. I’d rather win the old fashioned way…build a lead and then protect it with stifling defense.

Annoying and disrespectful are those who complain about how their “fix’ is delivered.
Also annoying is the constant barrage of race baiting, political posturing, and petty bickering.
I enjoy the articles and the content related posts for much the same reason you do. I hope the rest of it doesn’t drive me away.

  35. 541BucsFan Says:

Let’s be honest, Evans and Godwin make it easier for any QB. Brady will be just fine.

ROJO is fine he can do it we got Keyshawn too Calais we fine stupid Gronk Wirfs Brady it’s going to be great

  37. JameisAlmighty! Says:

No need for a deep ball when blubber Arians breaks out the wishbone with RoJo running the show after the pathetic OL fails to protect buttscratching, over the hill Brady. This signing sucks. Brady should’ve retired a patriot so we can all root against the Pats. Now bellicheat offloads damaged goods and washup of a player to buffoon Licht. Licht made this signing for the Winston Bashers. Plain and simple.
