What Next? Chinn, Blacklock, A Running Back?

April 24th, 2020

DT Ross Blacklock

Day 2 of the NFL Draft is here and the Bucs are sitting with the 13th pick of Round 2 and some ammunition to trade up, though other teams have a lot more.

You wanna talk about trade ammo, the Patriots are sitting with the fifth pick of Round 2 and they have four third-round picks (Nos. 71, 87, 98 and 100 overall), plus two fourth-round picks, a fifth-rounder and four more sixth-round picks and a seventh.

By contrast, the Bucs have one third-rounder, a fifth, a sixth and a seventh, plus O.J. Howard.

Joe is a bit concerned about the Patriots manipulating Round 2 in ways that will screw the Bucs, though not intentionally.

Regardless, beastly defensive tackle Ross Blacklock out of Texas Christian University is still on the board. At 6-3, 305 pounds, he’s considered ferocious pass-rushing talent who isn’t as stout against the run. What a rotational piece he could be for Tampa Bay! Analyst and former DT Booger McFarland is a big fan of Blacklock and his value in Round 2.

Also on the board is big speedster safety Jeremy Chinn out of Southern Illinois, the nephew of Hall of Fame safety Steve Atwater. He wouldn’t be a reach for the Bucs and his ball skills make him a second-round pick.

And of course, the Bucs need a running back and the run on RBs likely is coming very soon after the draft kicks off at 7 p.m.

Would the Bucs dare take big-armed QB Jacob Eason if he falls to them at No. 45 overall?

If the Bucs grab a second-round running back, then the firepower on the roster truly could be historic. Joe is absolutely fine with the Bucs winning games 33-28 all season long.

  1. Buc4evr Says:

    Taylor or Swift, this is the final piece in the Offense. Then round 3 Bucs get a safety.

  2. Sarasota Garey Says:

    I thought we had a seventh from Patriots and 49ers each?

  3. NFLeeds Says:

    @Buc4evr

    Taylor Swift… only just realised that…

  4. 'daBUCisthis? Says:

    I hope it’s RB with the 2nd pick. I say 12-4 every year…. I mean it THIS time… šŸ˜ŽšŸ†šŸ†šŸ†
    Go Bucs!!!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Correction Joe…..we have 2 7th round picks….

  6. Phil Says:

    We need a running back but I would love Eason if he is there when we pick.

  7. alaskabuc Says:

    Delpit in the second, Cam in the third

  8. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Dobbins! He will give us a true three-down back with the best skillset in the draft.

    This offense would be extremely potent with the weapons we already have and then add Dobbins to the mix!

    It’s all falling into place!

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    If NE needs a TE…..they could easily afford OJ or Brate……they have plenty of draft picks to trade….

  10. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    you have to figure the Bucs have a running back or two that they like and if they’re there they will take them. If they’re not there they won’t just reach to take a running back they won’t like it will pick the next available best player.

  11. SeffnerBuc Says:

    I’ll be honest…I’m very concerned that there will be a run on RBs, and the top 4 backs remaining will be gone before the Bucs have a chance at one of them. I’m really hoping they make a move to trade up to get one of them in the 2nd round. I understand they don’t have as much ammo as other teams, but I think it is worth giving up something to ensure that you complete this offense, which is absolutely necessary.

  12. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    TBBF I would think if they had any interest in one of our tight ends he would have gone over in the gronk deal

  13. BUC CHEEKS Says:

    @joe

    We have 2 7th round picks #27,31

  14. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

    In a best case scenario we would take Eason in the 2nd round and trade Jax OJ Howard for Fournette, and maybe throw in a 7th round pick too. Then concentrate on defense the rest of the draft.

  15. adam from ny Says:

    trade the 2nd or 3rd to jacksonville for ngakoue…

    maybe throw in howard and get a 4th back

    Well played sir… Well played

  17. adam from ny Says:

    if cap can handle it, somehow do it

  18. Ed Kerber Says:

    See in Cincy wants OJ and the Bucs 2nd Pick for their #2. Get THE player BA wants (hopefully a RB).

  19. Buc4evr Says:

    @NFLeeds, LOL. Iā€™m all in for Tay Tay.

  20. Mort Says:

    Taylor or Winfield Jr. in 2, trade up for Cam Akers or Zach Moss if you happen to get Winfield Jr.

  21. LordCornelius Says:

    Looking at best available I think we need to go RB but do not trade up/reach.

    The Chiefs took my guy, but I really like Swift (doubt he falls) or Dobbins.

    Taylor scares me personally. Tape shows huge holes from that O-line. Fumble issues. Tread on tires. Not as good at pass pro as the other 3 top backs above or even Akers potentially.

    My plan would be Swift or Dobbins if they are there. If not then there are likely very solid disruptive DT, S, or Edge here and you just pray you get Akers or Moss in R3 or you draft a RB late and add Fournette as a worst case scenario.

    Hopefully someone takes Jonathon Taylor early.

  22. ben Says:

    WHY ..did the bucs give up a 4th round pick to N.E. for Gronk??? he was only gonna play for the bucs since he was retired . Why didn’t Licht offer a 6th or 7th round pick as Patriots as still getting something for a player who was not going to play again for them .

  23. Hamsadwitchtime Says:

    Has to be RB. Taylor…. how long have we ignored this? Brady loves versatile RB

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    Taylor.

    All in.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

    ben…perhaps a 4th was what NE wanted for Gronk.

  26. LordCornelius Says:

    Lets just look at the picks ahead of us for need

    CINCY – won’t be going RB with Joe Mixon already there. OL i’d guess
    INDY – not likely
    DETROIT – possible
    NYGIANTS – no
    PATRIOTS – no way IMO. Not after taking Michel R1 / still having White/others
    PANTHERS – no way
    DOLPHINS – possible/i’d say likely but who knows
    TEXANS – no
    BROWNS – no
    JAGUARS -maybe with the whole Fournette thing…
    BEARS – maybe but they do have Mongomerry/Cohen
    INDY – not likely given the sites i’ve read

    So it looks like only 4 teams even have RB as a potential need and none as a desperate need beyond the Dolphins probably.

    Hopefully the Dolphins go Taylor and D’Andre Swift magically falls into our lap.

    GO BUCS

  27. JP09 Says:

    RD2 Jonathan Taylor
    RD3 Raekwon Davis

    Hopefully we can get a 3rd or 4th back for howard too

  28. BritishBuc Says:

    For all of the Eason fans. Nah-uh! If we want to have a run at winning a Championship this year, today we need players are going to come in and make an immediate impact. Safety and RB should to be priorities

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

    Eason would be a nice pick definitely need that RB because of so many past whiffs in the draft when it comes to RB…need some backend help and mckinney and delpit are there and they are slightly better than the saluki that was in the artcile

  30. Casual Observer Says:

    Round 2 has to be a RB, imo. Should be a good one at no. 13 tonight.

  31. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    WE NEED ANTOINE WINFIELD JR. I THINK WE CAN GET A DECENT RB IN THE 3RD

  32. Brad Says:

    Hopefully itā€™s Winfield. Heā€™s a ball hawk like his dad, but at S.

  33. JGhotier Says:

    Antoine Winfield Jr.

  34. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    I like Swift. His running style reminds me of a certain All Pro running back of the 90s.

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

    LordCornelius- Why the apprehension with Taylor? The fumbling, ok I get that, but “tread”? If anything it shows durability and ‘feel’/polish. Dude’s a “work-horse”!
    I personally like Dobbins more, even more than Swift, but any of these three would be good.
    Frankly, the rest of this draft is a mystery. Safety? QB? RB? WR? DL?
    Could anyone truly be upset if the Bucs choose Eason? I don’t think so.

  36. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    Licht find a way to make it happen. Idc if we only have 3picks this year. Get Winfield and a RB then we’re gooood

  37. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    I will forgive u for taking a kicker in the 2nd round

  38. Marine Buc Says:

    RB or Safety in round 2.

    RB or Safety in round 3.

    If we can get a solid starter at OT, Safety and RB out of this draft I would be very happy.

    If we can trade OJ and pick up another pick that becomes a WR3 I would be ecstatic.

  39. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

    Hopefully Jonathan Taylor is still there when they pick!! Everyone is scared of him because of his mileage but aside from his fumbles which can be fixed (tiki barber) he’s going to be an excellent compliment to rojo….. Btw Joe you did the right thing taking the white out of the name… Thank you! …. It’s ignorance and not needed

  40. Casual Observer Says:

    Marine – Good strategy. I suspect RB and S in that order.

  41. Joeypoppems Says:

    Im hoping they go DL in the 2nd. RB in the 3rd.

    Im hoping they sign a vet Safety after the draft. Need a vet back there somewhere imo. WR on day 3.

  42. chris L Says:

    joe – didnt we add another 7th rounder from the trade with the niners to move up?

  43. BucsSuperBowlChamps2020 Says:

    If we are to trade oj or brate I think it needs to be tonight Iā€™d love for us to package one of them with an extra pick to get us another second round pick and use one for running back preferably to me Taylor and maybe wirfs teammate Epenesa who Iā€™m surprised is still available.

  44. Godlovesbucs Says:

    Blacklock
    Madubuike
    Gallimore
    Mckinney
    Delpit
    Winfield
    Chinn

    If none of these are available maybe a rb.
    Taylor
    Swift
    Akers
    Dobbins
    Moss

    Thats 12, we sit at 14. There are a few wr that people love and a few o linemen people love. We should be able to get a quality player at 14, hopefully no more trade ups.

  45. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

    If there’s a good RB left by time we’re up being KC grabbed Clyde at the end of the first

  46. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    Draft defense in the second. there will be good running backs left in the third.

  47. QUE589 Says:

    Bucs Big Board
    Taylor (RB)
    Swift (RB)
    Chinn (S)
    Winfield (S)
    Dobbins (RB)
    Davis (S)
    Akers (RB)
    Delpit (S)

  48. VegasBuc Says:

    2nd – S McKinney, Winfield Jr, or Delpit
    3rd – RB Anthony McFarland Jr
    5th – CB Noah Igbinoghene
    6th – QB Nate Stanley
    7th – DL
    7th – OL

  49. Killian Says:

    Gotta be safety or RB. They should definitely look long and hard at a QB though, considering next year its doubtful we draft early.

  50. ItzOK Says:

    I vote we draft CeeDee Lamb’s Girlfriend

  51. BucsFanFromSaintsLand Says:

    Blacklock!

  52. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

    Iā€™m in the minority in hoping the Bucs grab Eason if heā€™s sitting there, BUT the team seems to definitely be putting all its chips on the table for Super Bowl or bust this year. With that in mind Iā€™ve abandoned hope on Eason in Rnd 2 and Iā€™d like to see them go with best available safety at their pick (there are still some really good prospects available…for now). I am a RoJo optimist, so Iā€™d like to see Licht draft a RB day 3, sign a cheap vet to a one year deal for passing downs, and use the round 2-3 for S, DT, or maybe a burner WR with punt/KO return chops.

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Licht has never traded a player during a draft. It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely.

    Wanting to get rid of OJ is short-sighted. His numbers dropped because he was needed to block as a result of Dotson declining. We need OJ beyond this year, and with his numbers down, a second contract would come cheap.

  54. kh Says:

    Antonio Gibson, RB/WR, Memphis.

  55. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    Use OJ Howard in combination with our 2nd rd pick to move up as high as possible for a RB…

    Any of the 4 remaining RB’s would complete the offense and be a game-changer…

    I think Rojo is going to blow up this year too, so that would give us a great 1-2 punch combo.

  56. Bucfan81 Says:

    We need to stay put at 13 in round 2 and then trade OJ to the patriots for there third round pick 71. Then we can get best players available at RB, Safety and DLine

  57. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    OJ has already expressed that he wants out BTW…

  58. PSL Bob Says:

    Stay with the plan. RB with out 2nd Rd pick!

  59. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    I think there’s going to be a run on RB’s in the 2nd rd and Idk if one of the big 4 remaining RB’s will still be there at 13 if we don’t trade up….

    *And we would sorely regret not getting any one of the 4 studs remaining; Taylor, Dobbins, Akers, & Swift would all be game-changers and I’d prefer them respectively in that order listed…

  60. Casual Observer Says:

    KH – Gibson is an interesting, talented, and very versatile player. Maybe a fit. Round 3? or even 2?

  61. Adrnagy Says:

    We are trading for Bill Belichick.
    We send Arians and 2 nd.

    We signed Wes welker. And Legarette Blount

    We are the new Tompa bay patriots !

  62. LordCornelius Says:

    Trade OJ for a 3rd and 4th or 2 3rds from the Pats

    BPA at RB /S / WR /DT or DE / QB with your 2/3/3/4/5 making sure to hit on RB in 2 or 3

    That’d probably be my dream scenario.

  63. rrsrq Says:

    Go defense – DL rotation, hope Cam Akers slides or go with Gipson out of Memphis (2 in 1), WR/RB/ST

  64. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    OJ may want out, but Brate IMHO is the one to get rid of. OJ has a lot more upside.
    But Brate’s stupid contract may make him real hard to move ?

  65. Easy Says:

    Grant F’n Delpit if Swift or Dobbins are off the board.

  66. Ā©MadMax Says:

    @Itzok, yeah, she is smoking hot! lol

  67. Craig Says:

    Bucs need to fill two holes immediately. Amazingly those two positions are still full of great draftees.

    A free range safety would come close to completing the defense.

    A good RB would be super too. Trade down and get another second rounder or a very high third rounder, then get both, safety first. Complete a project before moving on.

    Then get a QB. I think Morgan, Gordon, or Stanley might be better than Eason or Love.

    After that get back-ups for O-line and D-line

  68. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Buc4evr Says:
    “Taylor or Swift, this is the final piece in the Offense.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or maybe just TAYLOR SWIFT!
    haha
  69. Rick Says:
    Neville Gallimore DT from OU is a beast. Would like to see him if we miss out on Blacklock. Neville should be there in the 3rd. Hope we can get best available RB or S if we miss out on Blacklock in the second.
  70. Ā©MadMax Says:
    XavMck if he’s still there at 45 or Dobbins…wouldnt mind Taylor or Swift. Wonder why Mckinney is falling?
  71. Sumosam Says:
    Taylor 2nd round if he is there.
  72. KnoxvilleBuc Says:
    Would love to see us land Blacklock. We need to keep stacking the front seven. Vea is a beast and we need someone to come in a spell Suh. Only helps our secondary even more if our push up the middle is better. Hopefully Vea can stay healthy
  73. m0j0 Says:
    I hope the Bucs go BPA in round 2. We have reached way too often to fill needs in the past.
  74. Owlykat Says:
    Dobbins is the best of the RBs left and trade up for him if you can. If all the top RBs are gone get Big Back A. J. Dillon now and Gibson later in the draft and our RB would be set. We can get a backup QB in the 5thā€”Stanley or Morgan. Eason isnā€™t that great! In the third get Pittman to start as our 3rd WR. We donā€™t need another Safety!!! In the 6th we need a big backup NT to backup Vea, perhaps Darion Daniels 6ā€™4ā€ 325 lbs. from Nebraska.
  75. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:
    RB in 2nd; WR in 3rd.
  76. Darin Says:
    Lord cornelius
    Doubt the Dolphins pass on Swift. He was their pick in round one and ready to go before the Pack( i think it was) traded for the pick. So imo Bucs need to leapfrog Miami if they want Swift. Here’s where OJ gets his papers I hope
  77. Admiral Redbeard Says:
    Perhaps the Joe’s don’t understand this yet, but our pass rush doesn’t come from our D-line, it comes from our linebackers. D-line in this, and any 3-4 defense for that matter, is used to push the pocket and stuff the run. It would be helpful to people that don’t understand the X’s and O’s of football if the Joe’s would stop pushing players that don’t fit our scheme. Two players that do fit our scheme are Davon Hamilton and Leki Fotu, which also happen to be two guys that can be had in later rounds. Javon Kinlaw was a guy that would’ve fit nicely, but he’s gone. You’re welcome.
  78. JimmyJack Says:
    I do got a feeling that Wirfs was part of a bigger plan to overhaul this rush attack. They want that phase of the game producing. But unlike with Wirfs I don’t think they will pannick if they don’t get their guy. They might let the board fall to them and snag a defensive player. And maybe they got their eye on somebody later. Maybe even trade back into back of round 2.
    Or maybe they like Akers and he might be there at 13. I think they got a little more options with RB…….especially since there are still decent backs in free agency.
  79. Joe in Michigan Says:
    If you know Lichtā€™s tendencies, heā€™s probably going to try to trade down a bit in the 2nd to recoup a 4th Round pick, if the Bucs think they can still get their guy 10 to 12 picks later. I wonder if the 3rd Round will be the spot the Bucs get a RB, that seems to be the range of where Cam Akers or Antonio Gibson will go.
  80. JimmyJack Says:
    Corners and Receivers were taken hot and heavy in round 1. This has set us up well I think. Sure there’s a lot of backs still there but it looks like there’s a lot of defense players there as well at positions we need.
    And there are still receivers too. Don’t be shocked if receivers keep getting taken and we can sit right where we are at with lots of nice options.
  81. Admiral Redbeard Says:
    IMHO, we should trade down from our 2nd (but try to remain in the 2nd), and get more picks. Antonio Gibson, as a RB with 4.38 speed at 220lbs, with great hands, could be a beast in this offense. And as I said previously, Hamilton or Fotu are perfect fits for the D-line. Tanner Muse is a John Lynch type that could be just what Bowles is looking for in a safety. All of these guys can be had with mid round picks. the late 2nd can be used on our future QB, and a WR can be had in the 7th.
  82. JimmyJack Says:
    Admiral……That’s sound OK…..But now do you do if RBs start getting gobbled up and Gibson is our Target? If that position gets thin real quick you might lose him from trading back.
    Can’t trade back if you just got one target. Ya need a couple choices you’re comfortable with otherwise you need to take Gibson at 45 while you still can. And don’t trust those mocks. How many of em pegged Bunting as a second rounder last year.
  83. SkBucsFan Says:
    Itā€™s a no brainer if Blacklock is there. Building up the d-line is always a good move. Can get an RB in the 4th. Or Could have if the Bucs had a pick
  84. Admiral Redbeard Says:
    JJ, I would take Gibson at 45 if that’s how things are going. Hopefully there are a few RB’s still on the board when our pick comes up, so we can trade back. We’ll see. FYI, Gibson is projected as a 4th or 5th rounder because he only started one year. Hopefully that works to our advantage.
  85. 813bucboi Says:
    wouldnt mind delpit R2…RB R3
    GO BUCS!!!!!
  86. Bucsgotachance..todonothing Says:
    Stay picking pro ready guys..coach likes lsu safetys..depends on who they\brady likes as a running back…keep in mimd gentleman that we have picks for next year we can use to trade up.
    If we’re all in- then this year is the year to get who you like and need.
    I know suh gone next year and his money will help secure godwin but that doesn’t mean we need draft his replacement now or a qb now.
    We have next year draft to fill both positions or we can trade for guys we like.
    We haft to continue patching the holes on both sides unless ronald jones is 3 down back..we get safety and rb 2nd rd..we use next year pick with oj to get who we want.
    I kimda like to keep oj but if we didnt his money could pay most the rookies this year.
    No need forba disgruntled guy around..if brady don’t excite you then begone you savage-dennis reynolds voice
  87. Casual Observer Says:
    Trading down a bit in round 2 as several have suggested seems both possible (almost likely with Licht) and reasonable. Get back a 4th rounder.
  88. Ā©MadMax Says:
    No way we trade down….win now mode. XavMck or beast RB.
    If we miss on Xav, Ashtyn Davis in the 3rd
    If we grab S, then Akers in the 3rd
