Bucs Close Draft With A RB

April 25th, 2020

Final 2020 pick RB Raymond Calais.

Hey, why the hell not?

The Bucs, in an effort to shore up their Grand Canyon-sized hole at running back, finish the 2020 draft by taking a Sun Belt stab at a running back in Raymond Calais of Louisiana-Lafeyette.

Per Lance Zeirlein, Calais is someone like Donnel Pumphrey, who is quick and agile but has no patience whatsoever for linemen to open up holes.

And — GASP! — he appears worthless as a pass blocker. That will get him run off!

Change-of-pace back with very good burst but below average size that could limit his NFL suitors. Calais is fairly talented (and courageous) as an inside/outside zone runner, but as a pro, he will likely be considered a gadget back who makes his living in open space. His play speed is what gives him a chance, but he needs to run with better patience to improve his control and elusiveness in the open field. He’s not much of a third-down option, but his history as a punt-team gunner works in his favor.

Given his speed, Calais sounds like a candidate for a return guy as well.

It’s hilarious how Licht doesn’t even trust his own drafting ability and has to go get another back. Joke.

  2. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

    We needed a kick returner!

  3. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

If the kid can run back punts and kicks, he’ll make the team.

  4. PragueBucsFan Says:

Wow. Well hes fast Ill give him that. Jeff Demps? Can you belive we traded Blount for Jeff Demps and he never played a down. Biggest bonehead move by Bucs ever.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

Practice squad. Who is he going to replace on the roster and he’d never be active if he did.

  6. Casual Observer Says:

Looked like a good draft to me. Until these last 2 picks. They seem pretty iffy. But can’t expect much in the last round, I guess.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

    Competition for T.J. Logan.

  8. Colin in Canada Says:

Ira is going to call him Ka-Lay for life

  9. Brandon Says:

Two completely different types of RBs. This guy is all speed while Vaughn is a straight forward hard charger. You don’t want a roster full of replica RBs. You want variety and right now we have that.

  10. tbbucs3 Says:

This is another average RB core.

  11. Todd Says:

    TBbucs3–

    Are you insane?

    This guy’s a weapon!

Good Lord, if you aren’t excited after seeing his highlights, you’re tone deaf.

  12. ©MadMax Says:

If BA wants him, well, he knows…and its just a 7th, so theres that.

  13. tbbucs3 Says:

Todd, you relieze hes gonna be going up against NFL talent right?

Small fast guys with good highlights rarely work in the NFL and if they did Jeff Demps wouldve been a star.

  14. Tvan101 Says:

Tbbucs3 what about Lindsey with broncos and Cohen with the bears. You dont have a clue what will happen any more than I do.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

Wasn’t Warrick Dunn about the same size, but maybe .1 faster?

  16. tbbucs3 Says:

    Tvan

Key word “rare”, right now he’s a longshot to make the 53 man.

  17. Easy Says:

Could be TB12s version of Deon Lewis on third downs.

  18. zorro Says:

I’ve been waiting for the Bucs to draft a guy like this for years.
Let’s give the kid a chance. We may end up clapping for him……and Licht!

  19. KingTampa Says:

Calais And Vaughn are incredible picks!! We’ve really juiced up our RB room. Very happy with both picks. Wouldn’t surprise me if Calais can add 10 pounds and retain his speed he’s not getting 10-15 touches a game. Just so explosive. And Vaughn is just a straight up dog! Great draft!

  20. Robert Says:

F ……k that dude has wheels. Can you just imagine having him as an audible with 4 wide and a qb that see’s the whole in the D………f…..k

  21. Rayjay1122 Says:

No complaints from me. Considering the state of the world, I think the NFL did a good job carrying out the draft and the Bucs drafted so much better than some of the previous disastrous drafts.

Especially round 2. I am telling you all, that was a great pick and he will,be a fan favorite over his time here. Great 2nd round pick especially as compared to former 2nd round picks.

  22. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I saw a good amount of this kid watching some film of Louisiana’s LT. He is super fast and hits the whole and watch out if its open. Not sure if he’ll make the team but some of the plays I saw, the kid is super quick. Not bad for a 7th round pick.

I really like the WR from Minnesota. He could be a steal for sure. We nailed the first two rounds. We will have to see what our RB from Vandy can do so I’ll leave that judgement open for now. But Winfield is going to be a star and Wirfs is a day 1 starter and will be a great pro for the next decade. Overall, I am happy with our draft. Itll be interesting to see how Zack Moss does versus our guy over the next couple of years.

  23. Ivan The Insider Says:

It’s funny how so many bitter Jameis homers on this site now just post non-stop negativity and criticism of Licht, Arians, etc.

  24. lambchop Says:

There is always room for speed on a football team. Let’s see what happens.

  25. David Smith Says:

Young man it’s a long strider like Bo Jackson and yes he is fast. If he can punt/kick return he makes the team.

  26. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

It seems like We had a great draft last year… I have faith in this coaching staff…
Our 3rd round RB was probably drafted because he can catch & no QB uses more catching RB’s than TB12…

  27. Dangeruss Says:

Wondering if Jose is ever going to say anything positive! TB12 has won 6 Super Bowls with less talent than on the 2020 Bucs! Let’s Go!!!! Someone needs to send Jose to Me Krafts favorite massage parlor to relieve stress!!!
