Bucs Add Returner/RB Raymond Calais In Round 7

April 25th, 2020

Bruce Arians weighs in

Did the Bucs just address their return game?

That’s a change.

Their final pick of the 2020 NFL Draft is Raymond Calais, their second pick of Round 7. He’s 5-8, 188 pounds out the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

As a senior, he cranked out a whopping 7.6 yards per carry en route to the All-Sun Belt team at running back. He got his start on special teams in coverage and at kick returner.

The Bucs love T.J. Logan at returner. He flashed well before he got hurt last season. But Arians glowed about Calais today and was fired up to get him, calling him a “joystick.”

“Just one of those guys I love to play with,” Arians said.

    Our new Dion Lewis…

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Not sure why the Bucs are so in love with T.J. Logan – he was fine last year, but didn’t look like anything special.

For this kid they showed some highlights on ESPN and he looked good, as you’d expect when seeing highlights. But obviously has great speed, but showed good agility as well. He’s a different style back than what else we have on the team, so that’s good. He looks to me like more of a kick returner, but if he can catch the ball, they could get him some screens if his moves translates to the NFL.

In any case it’s a 7th round wildcard, and a RB is generally the most fun pick here because you can get a RB literally anywhere (which is why you don’t spend high picks on them unless they’re a stunning talent).

We will see. What offensive guys picked in the 7th round in the last 5 years have done anything to help their team?

Chris Carson and who else? I am waiting.

  4. lowercaseg Says:

    def better than Dare ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  5. Bucs Guy Says:

I like this guy. He looks really fast through the line.
Get Patrick Taylor, Jr as a UFA pounding RB from Memphis if he’s not picked up. He could definately make this team. Same with LSU TE Thaddeus Moss.

  6. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Our next Robert Herron!

  7. Allbuccedup Says:

A lot of good players still available get busy JL.

  8. Ghibz Says:

What is your thoughts about Bryce Huff from Memphis as edge ?

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I was down on this kid at first, but after watching highlights? I kind of like it.

  10. John.L Says:

    Go get Qb Anthony gordon.

  11. tbbucs3 Says:

Bonzai, any highlights are gonna look good in college for players drafted. Watch Kennys Bells highlights.

If small fast guys worked in the NFL then Jeff Demps wouldve been a star.

  12. Swampbuc Says:

Antoine Winfield is als a very good punt return man. My son goes to U of Minn and knows him, fired up he’s a Buc!

  13. Bucs Guy Says:

Developmental QB as a UFA soinds good, but I doubt it because the Bucs picked up Quentin Flowers last week from the XFL and he could be our #3 QB instead of Griffin. He could learn from Brady.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Overall I think they did a good job with the draft.

The team got guys who can play early and help right away, not really developmental guys. That is a good thing as the team needs to win now, obviously.

I don’t know what grade to give since I didn’t do enough work ahead of time, but after watching highlights and reading summaries of the picks from different sources, all the picks make sense and they seem like good talents.

Honestly my biggest question is our Wirfs, I know everyone says he’s a no-brainier, but he physically just doesn’t look like a tackle – he looks like a guard. His measurables however say he’s a tackle, so I don’t know where the disconnect is in my head. In any case I’ll obviously defer to everyone else.

All the other picks, once reading up on them and watching highlights, I like for where the Bucs were picking.

  15. ©MadMax Says:

Yeah, Gordon is a must udfa signing…..Robert Taylor jr too, i thought he’d go in the 5th-6th.

  16. ©MadMax Says:

Rod, i seriously think Wirfs we be a pro bowl Guard. But try him out at RT…if it doesnt work out, then we know what to do. Haeg is going to do real well at RT.

  17. ©MadMax Says:

will, not we….ug, im tired, sleepy and drinking again lol

  18. donuts Says:

We will see. What offensive guys picked in the 7th round in the last 5 years have done anything to help their team?

Danny Vitale – with GB and Bucs 7th rounder

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs Guy – Wow, I totally missed the news that Flowers signed with the Bucs… Man, I love it… well in theory. If the Bucs wanted to use him around the goal line that would be ideal, but why would you take the ball out of Brady’s hands? Maybe they see him more as a Hill type of QB who you play all over. What I never got was why the Ravens didn’t pounce on Flowers. In college Flowers was better than Lamar Jackson in every way, had the better arm, was (slightly) more accurate and was the better runner. If you had a Ravens type of offense, Flowers is a super valuable guy.

Also didn’t know we picked up Jacques Patrick at RB. He looked great with the Vipers, and remember people, these XFL players are still like all-star college players even if most weren’t good enough for the NFL. So for a guy to play well there means he has a chance. Patrick is a big and powerful RB, will be interesting to see how he looks in camp. The Bucs missed out on getting the LT of the Vipers I guess, he was a stud, should have tried to nab him and at least give him a look.

  20. tbbucs3 Says:

” In college Flowers was better than Lamar Jackson in every way”

I dont agree with this at all….Lamar Jackson at Louisville was literally the QB for a 2-8 football team without him and still dominated.

  21. tbbucs3 Says:

And Flowers was by no means a better runner than Lamar.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

MadMax – If that happens then it’s still a good pick, but I hope he doesn’t get Brady killed in the meantime. But the big thing is he looks shorter and stubbier than he actually is – when you look at him you figure he’s like 6′ 2″/280 maybe, but then you see his real size is 6′ 5″/320. So I’m talking purely visual, like just looking at him, he does look like a guard – but tackles generally have long arms and are more lanky, but again, you measure his arms, and they’re not short. So it’s purely some visual trickery going on. Maybe he just needs to get some clothes tailored and he’d look more like a tackle.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am definitely happy with this draft from a need standpoint…..every single player.

    OT
    S
    RB
    3rd WR
    Diine Depth
    LB Depth
    KR/PR

  24. Cobraboy Says:

@ Rod Munch: I understand the confusion.

Wirfs *looks* like a guard, but has epic athletic ability…which makes him a tackle.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

tbbucs3 – Uh, did you see what USF was without Flowers? You have to look at his last year under Willie, not that awful hack that took over for him – but 2016 Flowers was insane.

    Flowers 2016 – 2812 yards, 24 TDs, 7 INTs, 153.6 rating
    Jackson 2016 – 3543 yards, 30 TDs, 9 INTs, 148.8 rating

    Flowers 2016 – 1530 yards rushing, 7.7 avg, 18 TDs
    Jackson 2016 – 1571 yards rushing, 6.0 avg, 21 TDs

Flowers had to share the backfield with Mack, which is the only reason his rushing stats weren’t even higher. Flowers had less offensive plays and did more with it.

    Flowers took a 4-8 (2014) team to 11-2 (2016)
    Jackson took a 9-4 (2014) team to 9-4 (2016)

  26. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

Bucs Guy says “Developmental QB as a UFA sounds good, but I doubt it because the Bucs picked up Quentin Flowers last week from the XFL ”

Bucs Guy. I did not see that and it’s not on the Bucs site. Can you cite a source? I’d love to see Flowers in a specialized role.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Rob – I looked it up, and it’s out there, Flowers signed along with two other Vipers, the RB I mentioned and a S. I missed it as well. The downside is that Flowers really isn’t a match for this offense and I hope they don’t want him a RB since he really is such a good utility guy. Maybe Arians has some plans, but really, are you going to run a gadget play and take the ball out of Brady’s hands? That’s probably a bad idea.

  28. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

Rod, he’s doesn’t seem like a great fit unless it’s in a multiple role, but I agree.. more Brady is better than less Brady.

  29. tbbucs3 Says:

    Rod

So Lamar Jackson is a superstar in the NFL and Flowers is a longshot to make the roster….im gonna go out on a limb and say Jackson is/was the better player.

  30. SOEbuc Says:

    I’d love to scoop Gordon.

    Draft grade: -A/+B

    1. OT Wirfs (all I have to say)
    2. S Winfield (ball hawking safety for Bowels and depth)
    3. RB Vaughn (they weren’t gonna sit ROJO especially with Wirfs. Power back.Depth)
    5. WR Johnson (Bank robbery and am very excited to see him play).
    6. DT Davis (Another robbery. 325 lbs that comes off the line like Shaq. DT depth.)
    7. LB Russell (S/T with potential. Depth).
    7. RB (S/T RB depth).

Filled two major holes with at RT and S. WR Johnson looks to be a possible great slot receiver. And Khalil David 325 lbs ran a 4.75 40-YD with 8 sacks last year. Added needed depth to almost every position taken.

    Nice Job Jason.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

tbbucs3 – Flowers was moved to RB by the stupid Bengals so he’s never actually had much of a chance to do anything, but in any case I was talking about college. They had very similar numbers – they were the same type of player and he seems like a natural backup to Lamar since there’s few people on earth who can do what they do. Go watch a Flowers highlight video and tell me he isn’t who I say he is.

  32. SkBucsFan Says:

Flowers is a solid prospect. I had no idea he was signed either. I wouldn’t have been thinking QB in the late rounds if I knew he was signed.

  33. Elite Vita Says:

    @Bucs Guy

It’s wonderful that the Bucs picked up Quentin Flowers last week. I’m trying to find the story somewhere on the internet but can’t find it. I sincerely would like to read about it. Can someone direct me to the story?

Deonte Harris – NO Saints – Undrafted – Pro Bowler

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Elite – google, “3 former XFL players for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to sign” – that should take you to the story.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

Oh wait, I got catfished and pawned by my own special needs. How did I miss TO sign… I read sign… Wow, what an idiot. OK, whoever said Flowers signed, you got me. You got me good.

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just think of it….as fast as Calais is…..he only matches the speed exactly of Devin White….4.42…..

  38. KingTampa Says:

Calais is faster than 4.42. His game tape is 4.3 easy. I believe he ran 4.28-4.30 in high school and college. Dude can legit fly

  39. Jason Mclaurin Says:

I like this pick because the kid can fit anywhere on the team but I can see him as a kickoff returner. I feel we need one more guy to return punts. Would also like to see a guard signed to complete our offensive line depth

  40. teacherman777 Says:

    Competition for Cappa!

He should not be “gifted” his starting gig because of his draft status.

He is going to get Brady killed. Mark my words. He whiff on a swim move by a nasty DT and Brady will get crushed by a 300 pound beast going full tilt.

Cappa should NOT be given his job. He should earn it.

Safeties and Corners have a ton of competition and depth and draft capital.

The O-Line? Marpet, Smith, Pamphile, Cappa.

    Wow. Is that it?

Cappa is a 6th man. He should practice at C/G/T for 2 more seasons on the bench as he transforms his body and gets quicker.

But for the next 2 years, Brady’s last hurrah.

Do we really really want to rely on Cappa? Jensens’ back for that matter.

If we suck again because of the interior of our line, I will lose it.

The Carl Nicks curse is still alive. Logan Mankins cured it. But Licht brouhht it back by forcing Logan to retire so he could sign Sweezy. Who was also like Carl Nicks!

    We needed a OG/C prospect!

  41. Gary o Says:

    We still need a kicker
