Bill Polian On Mekhi Becton

April 6th, 2020

“Mauler.”

Last week Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian decided to break down who he feels are the top-five offensive linemen in the draft.

Polian made his weekly appearance co-hosting “Late Hits” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio and spent a full segment talking about O-linemen. It may have been the most educational 15 minutes of offensive line talk Joe has ever heard. It was riveting.

While Polian pointed out that he doesn’t see the next Gene Upshaw anywhere in the draft, he added, “We will see.”

Polian believes the best tackle in the draft is monster Mechti Becton of Louisville.

Just because Polian views Becton as the best doesn’t mean he is flawless.

“At 6-7, 370, that weight is a problem — or concern is a better way of putting it,” Polian said. “He is a giant. He has long arms. He ran exceptionally well at the combine which is a good sign. Because a lot of people, myself included, worry about whether or not he had good enough feet to chase real good speed rusher which you will see in the NFL.

“The [40] time tells you he can. That he can learn. [Becton has] no problem in the run game. He’s a mauler; he’s a giant. It’s like trying to stop a bulldozer. In the end, he is going to win ever time.”

Now this is where it got good. Polian said you do not draft a tackle high because he can run block well.

“That’s not what you get paid to do in the National Football League, especially at left tackle,” Polian said. “You get paid to pass protect.

“So, first question is, what weight is he going to be? And I have not seen the strength and conditioning results as to what his real lean weight is though I am told that it is OK. There are teams I have talked to that say it is not a concern.”

Polian’s co-host Alex Marvez chimed in saying Becton’s body fat is 17 percent and asked Polian if that means anything to him.

“Yes, it does,” Polian said. “It matters greatly. It’s an OK number, by the way. Body fat percentage matters greatly. The higher percentage over 15, the more you worry about the player. That is especially true for people of his weight. But he’s OK. Seventeen is OK.

“I don’t know what his real lean weight is simply because I haven’t checked with the people who know because I don’t want to put them on the spot. The bottom line is, the 17 percent body fat and the 40-time make me a little more comfortable than I was going in. That’s why I make him No. 1 [offensive lineman].”

Joe will have Polian’s other four offensive linemen later this week.

Interesting that Polian said you don’t pay left tackles to run block. Hey, it is a passing league, isn’t it?

And the body fat got Joe thinking. Remember when former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik used to spar with former Bucs left tackle Donald Penn, saying on national radio how Penn was too big and that Dominik even worked a weight clause into Penn’s contract?

Perhaps Dominik had the same info Polian has, that a certain percentage of body fat is detrimental to a lineman?

Polian is the first notable person Joe has heard say a 40-time matters with offensive linemen.

Only 17% body fat at close to 370? Runs a 5.1? This guy is a freak.

  2. ©MadMax Says:

Joes, any chance we can get a Simmons article? Safety is a big hole too….and we’ll have to trade up to get him….but i think it’ll be worth it. Freak athlete, game changer…just like Big V and D. White….if anybody, Jason can get it done.

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

He appears to be very good…and the old sports cliche is that the good big man always beats the good smaller man. Nobody can match this guys size so as Polian suggests…he wins everytime.

  4. Joe Says:

Joes, any chance we can get a Simmons article?

Isaiah Simmons??? Only way he falls to the Bucs if he wears a bong mask on draft night and he pistol whips a cop the night before.

  5. ZZbuc Says:

No way this guy makes it to 14……Take him out of the list…….And if a miracle happens, u just take this guy……You´ll have to wait a long time to see this speed in such a big dude…….

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

What do we do if 4 OL, Brown/Kinlaw, and Chaisson are gone? need a partner before a trade down. Dare take a WR?

ITS SO CUTE THAT YOU PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT FOOTBALL IN 2020 LIKE THERE WILL BE A SEASON, LMAO, TOO FUNNY, VERY COMICAL, JUST SHOWS HOW LONELY PEOPLE ARE

    1.) Willis
    2.) Wirfs
    3.) Thomas
    4.) Jones
    5.) Jackson

  9. Marine Buc Says:

I would prefer Wirfs, Willis or Thomas over Becton. Becton has played in a more run oriented offense. He hasn’t been fully tested in a pass heavy offense. I don’t like the fact he is only 20 years old and I don’t like the fact he weighs @ 370 lbs.

I would pass if any of the other three are available.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

Remember this. Buc fans do not are tough. We always hope for the best but prepare for the worst. We are all in this together.

I will pray for you brother.

  14. Harold Says:

no need to pray, i am just letting you know there will not be an NFL season, better to her it now then hope for it then be disappointing in a month or so when they call off the season

  15. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Don Penn had a great career, once he left Tampa.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

Give me a OT can do both, run and pass protect.
We were #1 in the league passing last year? And 7-9? So, don’t throw the dirt over the run-game just yet. The pendulum is swinging. Look around, teams like the 49ers, Ravens, Titans, and others are making waves with solid ground games. K.C. was in this same boat not too long ago.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Odds are that Becton will be gone by the time we pick at #14.

  18. Harold Says:

Odds are so will your mother

Once again another national that doesn’t know we just signed an average LG for $40 million and $27 million guaranteed. Wirfs or Wills at RT Bill.

  21. Steven007 Says:

Harold (trollosaurus annoyingashellii), if you think there will be no season, why on earth are you chiming in on a blog that’s discussing…the upcoming season? As a “warning”? That’s disingenuous. We get it, you really, really like to see your “name” on the internet. So consider my mention of you at the top a precious gift, Darlene.

  22. Bucs Guy Says:

If available, pick one of the big 4 OTs. If all 4 OTs are gone, you trade down to 15-21 and draft Jones or Cleveland at OT while picking up a 2nd rd pick. I love both Brown and Kinlaw, but this is a very deep draft for DT, RB and WR. With an extra 2nd round pick you could get CEH at RB and a very good DT or G such as Isaih Wilson. There are plenty of good DTs that will be available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds such as Madubuike, Blocklock, Gallimore, Elliott and Hamilton. Any of these could be the Suh replacement in 2021.

I would love to see the Bucs trade OJ for a 2nd and 4th. I kind of thought this was almost a done deal prior to FA; but TB12 loves TEs, so I doubt it will happen now.

  23. BillyBucFan Says:

Not sure where Polian is wrong. He was talking about left tackle.

  25. Harold Says:

Billy Boy Buc Fan how is telling the facts being a troll, there will be no NFL Season, no way… are you kidding me? Thousands are dying daily and you think there will be an NFL Season huh? hahahahahaha, Idiot

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

MadMax: I’m in agreement with you on Isaiah Simmons. They talk about him being a Lavonte David-type player, can you imagine having another player like him at Safety/LB/Bowles chess piece? Our only hope that he falls to us is to start some vicious rumors about him…I hear he likes pineapple on his pizzas.

  27. Fat ginger joe Says:

  28. JP09 Says:

Off topic, anyone think the Glazers set up the Uni leak and really have something up their sleeve, maybe a logo change or completely different uniforms than the mock up from Lukas

  29. ©MadMax Says:

    @Joe, I know , ROFL… whatever it takes….

You know im a big Becton fan too….a fan of all of the big 4 OT. If we wait, i think one will drop to us, probably Thomas. But if we package a trade with the Panthers for their 7th, and Simmons or Wirfs are still there, Im taking Simmons. When the other team cant score but we can, win win win.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

I’d be most interested to see who he has at number five and how that guy compares to this “Big 4” we keep hearing about.

Don’t be shocked if them first four guys are gone and the Bucs still take a tackle. Already heard one source say the Bucs may have 5-6 Tackles they like in Round One.

  31. sincethebeginning Says:

@JimmyJack I sure hope you’re right! I’d even trade some future picks (1st and 4th rd or later) to move up and get the right tackle. The future is now!

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Bucs Guy. That does sound good on paper but once you trade down you aren’t guaranteed to get one of the next two Tackles you mentioned, unless you trade down just one spot.

A couple other teams behind us also need a Tackle. Not to mention teams could also now jump ahead of us.

Plus you gotta have a trade market to begin with. Saying trade to 15-21 implies what exactly? Who is traded up for who? I’ve heard Minnesota might consider trading up for a WR. But that’s only if they drop. And Minnesota is at 22? Who else is trading up in that range you said?

Lot of guesswork at this point. And if we gonna trade it shouldn’t be to get just those two players you can’t guarantee. If the plan is to take a Tackle we better take it next we like at 14 or have a better fail-plan if we trade back.

Lots of holes and unknowns in that idea.

  33. Owlykat Says:

No way we use a first round pick on Simmons. Don’t give Licht any ideas on how he can ignore OL one more draft when getting an OT is a must to keep Brady uninjured this year. I don’t think BA will even let Licht do that when BA wants a Super Bowl Ring. BA knows he has to protect Brady and even Jameis who is a lot more able to escape than Brady still had 47 sacks with our so called average OL.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

I would notind a trade up for that Simmons guy if Bowles thinks he is his next great safety…….But it looks like that dude is going Top Five so the price would be way too high. He’d have to drop to maybe like #8-9 to get us a more teal stic chance but even then its not likely.

Licht has never moved up in the first round. It’s always down. But maybe he’ll buck the trend this year and decide we are going all in.

I’ll give it a 1% chance. Good enough for me to keep dreaming. My dream will die when Simmons name gets called.

  35. Jon Says:

17 percent. Bill polian is a moron. That’s not high at all for lineman alot of these guys are 30 percent or higher. Ridiculous, just like them saying that kid DJ Metcalf was 2 percent……hes probably 8 percent. I’m in bodybuilding competitively and these guys are not anywhere near sub 5 percent trust me

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Harold…you must be the lonely one to travel to multiple sites and post the same crap.

    Get a life…loser.

  37. mark2001 Says:

Yeah Harold..we don’t live in a dreamworld. We know there may not be a season… God only knows. But thank God for the draft, and thank God for nice diversions like the internet normally…particularly the good, clean sites you can enjoy…like this one.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

I also think there’s a good chance the Bucs are looking at the 2nd round to get a RT. RTs are found all the time in Day2 and this is supposedly a deep Tackle Class.

If we take a guy in Round 1 it’s putting Donovan Smith on alert that we just took somebody whose trying to take his job. Which honestly isn’t a bad plan, whether the rookie wins it or not. It gives Donovan a reason to bust his ass.

But if the team is planning to keep Donovan at LT for the future they might have a guy on Round2-3 they can get for RT and let him try to beat Haeg for the position in 2020.

That would really open up our first choice. And we could wind up with a big impact player. Both are good plans in mine opinion.

  39. mark2001 Says:

You don’t trade down if you want a top tier tackle. But who know that will be our first pick? Trading down and picking up a top tier rookie developmental QB and RB might be the order of the day.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

Get used to the trolls people……Tom Brady’s here and the bandwagon is filling up. Now that the Bucs are relevant it’s gonna bring many types of fans……and it’s gonna bring trolls the same. Just wait til the season starts.

  41. mark2001 Says:

And a tackle in the second or third round…With a safety, a WR, and bpa in the third and forths.

  42. Ricky Ricardo Says:

Trade back, get picks. Forget about the allure of the big defender or o-lineman. If you can trade back in rd 1 two times, do it. Use it to get the 2 best rbs you can. Draft 1 in the 1st rd, another in the 2nd. With the picks you get, grab some good guys for the positions of need.

Coach them up. There’s a lot of talent in this draft. Don’t get stuck on a couple other guys then have to settle for anything. You grab the guys you CAN get- the best Rbs for example.

  43. SOEbuc Says:

    @Joe

I agree with him not getting OT high. Stating Becton can run and pass block so I’m putting him at LT to watch Tom’s back, which is where he would need to be. I wouldn’t risk bringing in a rookie LT and try to develop RT. Donovan Smith apparently doesn’t think highly of himself at RT. So I’m only taking the #1 and #2 OL prospects that proved their worth at RT. Wirfs and Wills.

My disliking of Smith at LT I’ve always thought he could be good LG. Very strong and stout. Too stout for LT. Many scouts had him transforming to OG in the NFL. Put Ali back at his best position RG. Draft Thomas at LT. Thomas and Smith would be a mountain on the left side. But… just always been a thought.

  44. Joe in Michigan Says:

MadMax: I doubt the Panthers would trade with us, they wouldn’t want someone in their own division getting a lights-out player. Maybe the Jags at 9, maybe they’d even take a pick from next year’s draft (since they’re in rebuild mode anyway).

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow. Bill Belichick is going after Jameis Winston! There is some irony!

    Sooo you’re saying there’s a chance?!?

  49. ©MadMax Says:

@JoeinMichigan, I dont know. They are in rebuild mode and might view our 14th and 45th as too tempting to pass. We’ll be hurting needing to fill other holes, but man, can you imagine Simmons back there in this Bowles D? Superstar Safety and LB taken care of with one pick. Bowles is licking his chops thinking about using this kid. SS, FS, ILB, OLB….all taken care of with Simmons.

  50. ©MadMax Says:

I was called crazy when I was calling for Brady.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Harold…..I just hope this is just you getting warmed up. I really hope you got better stuff then this coming because this is pathetic. There is a art to getting under somebody’s skin buddy…….You’re not even close.

But at the very least can you at least try to be funny for everybody’s sake? What is this generic mom’s basement crap? Dude that was an insult from the AOL dial up days ……And it was only mildly funny back then……What’s next, you’re going to hot me with a You Mama’s so fat joke?

If this is what your gonna do can you please try harder and get better at it. You’re a snooze bro.

  53. Harold Says:

well Jimmy Jack the fact that you even mentioned AOL and DIal up in the same sentence just shows me you are an Old Internet Turd who clearly has been a loser going back to the 90’s, I am sure you are the fat kid with no girl who spent your weekends popping your zits in the mirror while the cool kids were out at parties, so sad you have gone from chat rooms to some lame football site where the same 10 post nonstop, really feel kind of sorry for you dude that your life has taken no meaning or direction.. I am sure you have nothing to look forward to in life then to post a comment everytime this site post a new article and when there is no football season this year I am sure you may still post hourly on here… loser

I don’t care for Harold’s approach but it’s not out of the question that the NFL could delay, postpone and even cancel this season. I wish it wasn’t but unfortunately it could happen. Either way this is the worst year even for Tampa to be hosting the Super Bowl. Thanks NFL for giving our host year away twice and landing us this f*cked year.

  64. Joe in Michigan Says:

It’s nice to dream anyway, MadMax. I remember dreaming about the Bucs getting Jonathan Vilma the year he came out.

  66. Buccinutz15 Says:

Very good chance we’ll have to trade up for one of the “Top 4” OT. We should trade down and take OT Jones from Houston, or best RB available(Swift,Taylor,CEH).

  67. JimmyJack Says:

Hey not fair for y’all to smash our dreams about Simmons. Ya never know what curveball come on draft day and Maybe Simmons slips to 8 where it won’t cost a entire draft to move up for him. Then Licht makes the bold move.

We know it’s unlikely but let a bro dream.

But does anybody else give any other safety’s a outsides chance of being on the Bucs radar at #14?…….months ago I was hearing Delpit. Now not so much. Maybe everyone saw what I saw in the national Championship game cause Delpit looked plain bad out there.

  68. Joe in Michigan Says:

Delpit didn’t participate at the Combine. Kind of a big deal in hindsight, with pro days being cancelled. I think he might fall, maybe to where Greedy Williams fell last year. You never know though, it only takes one NFL team to love a prospect. I did see where Devin White said he’d like to team up with Delpit again, so there’s that.

  69. admin Says:

Bill Polian also told last years NFL MVP he would be better off playing WR instead if QB

Hardly the only one. He also built three teams that went to six Super Bowls. 🤔

Joe will take Polian’s words over 99 percent of the talking heads.

  70. JimmyJack Says:

Hey Joe in Me chigan. I’m not big on mock drafts but when I see one I can’t help but be curious and look. Saw one yesterday that had Delpit in Round2.

Also been hearing a lot of high praise of some other 2nd rounders at safety’s. That might be the sweet spot if we got our eyes on one.

But don’t be shocked if a guy like Delpit is there and we go another direction. That’s what they did with Bunting last year and that might turn out to be a nice selection.

It all comes down to who’s on the board after SF makes their pick.
