A What-They-Should-Do Mock Draft

April 21st, 2020

“I like the way this guy thinks, Jason.”

Joe likes when mock drafts are completely clear in their focus, not some goofy hybrid of “what I think will happen'” and “what I want to see.”

So Joe was pleased to read the latest mock draft of Prickly Pete Prisco, longtime NFL insider for CBS Sports. In typical Prisco fashion, he emphasized his mock is about what teams should do.

(Quick story: Joe calls Prisco “prickly” for a reason; his personality isn’t for everyone. At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this year, Joe heard Prisco having a loud conversation with another national media figure. The other guy had to get back to work and gave Prisco the following goodbye, “Stay angry, Pete!”)

Even with his bluster, Florida-based Prisco has a very level-headed grasp on all things NFL.

At No. 14 overall, he has the Bucs loading up at defensive line after the Raiders draft QB Tua Tagovailoa at No. 12 overall and the 49ers walk away with wide receiver Henry Ruggs, III.

SOUTH CAROLINA • SR • DT – 6’5″ / 324 LBS
With the top four tackles off the board, the Bucs would opt to take a power player inside for their defense. With Ndamukong Suh on a one-year deal, it works.
And that’s the key here for Joe. There are at least four teams ahead of the Bucs in the draft that need a tackle, and that means the Bucs might miss out on one of the Big-4 beasts in the draft.
.
Joe just hopes the Bucs don’t do anything foolish. Drafting Kinlaw and not panicking if the tackles are gone is just fine.

he would be a good pick under those circumstances

  2. LordCornelius Says:

Love Kinlaw. Just a great name lol

  3. Sarasota Garey Says:

I just saw a youtube interview with Gradkowski, he said he might be open to teaming back up with Brady

  4. BillyBucFan Says:

I would be happy with Kinlaw.
I still think teams will trade up ahead of us for WRs and that an OT will be available.

I could see the Bucs trading back even if Kinlaw and 1 of the Big 4 are available and the Bucs just don’t like him.

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Just curious what would you consider foolish Joe? Taking Tackle #5?

  6. Buczilla Says:

I’d love to get Kinlaw, but I have a hunch that the niners will burst my bubble.

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

I have a feeling Kinlaw goes before Derrick Brown. Would love to get either one of them though.

  8. Tampabuscsbro Says:

If the 4 OTs are gone then I wouldn’t mind this although if this happens the bucs HAVE to trade back up to snag a right tackle somewhere. that position is way too important and we have too big of a hole to ignore it.

  9. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    Speaking of the draft.

When do we get to see Licht’s War room set up?

  10. Casual Observer Says:

    Top OT or Kinlaw.

  11. I Bleed Pewter Says:

He would be my pick if the 4 top OT are gone before 14

  12. John Says:

Just deleted JoeBucsFan under my favorites. I am sure that Joe would love to see us draft defense all the way through the draft with no help for Tom Brady. That way Joe could tell the world that he was right about Jameis Winston all along. At the time of this writing no team has expressed any interest in Jameis not even as a backup.

    Buczilla

I hear you loud and clear.
John Lynch rightfully likes sticking it to us when he can….. all smiles too!

    ——————————–

Bruce Gradkowski? …misinformation or fake news unless you’re speaking of Stephen Gostkowski or Rob Gronkowski

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Bucsbro…..You say we have to trade down but remember that only happens if somebody falls worth trading for. If that’s your hope you might wanna root for a top WR to drop. That might be our best bet to find a trade partner.

As far as our hole at RT. We might not be as bad as meets the eye. Don’t sleep on Haeg. I don’t think they sign him if they don’t think he can handle the job. I think they brought him here as part of the plan if they don’t get their guy day one and have to get one day 2. Haeg is here to hold down the fort……For what it’s worth I bet they could have resigned Dotson for the same money Haeg got but they chose Haeg instead. That tells me they think Haeg is a upgrade over Dotson. We do need more at RT but don’t think we gotta sell the farm.

  16. Leighroy Says:

The top 4 OT’s are valued that highly bc they’re potential LT position players despite any flaws. IF there’s an OT run and the Bucs go BPA at 14, in a deep year for RT’s one can be had in the 2nd round. A RB will slip to the 3rd, it happens every year and increasingly so as RBs become devalued. So that’s one way this could all play out and still be a HR.

It’s be nice to land one of these top 4 bc need would marry with best player available, and if in 2 years we need to run D Smith out of town, the replacement is on the roster. But don’t force it. Trading up for a RT is poor use of draft capital. Trading up for Simmons could be wise all things being equal, but costs the ability to fill those other needs by losing capital unless Licht gets creative.

Is bolstering the defense not building around the Goat?! I don’t think anyone is saying the whole draft needs to be defense. Enjoy your hiatus John.

What about all the chatter that Kinlaw will drop because of his bad hip surgery in 2018 and a bum knee?

  18. Sarasota Garey Says:

Trench War says Rob Gronkowski, it just came out within the last 15hrs, the guy asked him if he could come out of retirement and reunite with Tom Brady, He said “You never know”

  19. WyldKat Says:

    No kickers.

  20. Joeypoppems Says:

Albert Breer was spit-balling ideas for a Yannik Ngauke trade and said maybe he can be moved as part of a trade down for the Jags.

Yhe specific example he used was Jags trade #9 and Ngauke to The Bucs for #14 and their 2021 1st…

Sign me up for that idea!!

  21. gbobucsfan Says:

Stop with the Gronk talk. He also said he is very happy with what he is doing now.

We will also need to trade with NE. Not happening.

  22. Umm Says:

Lets sign a 43 year old QB and then start drafting players that will develop 2-4 years down the road! Yeah right, what is the point?!

This team is Superbowl or bust for the next 2 seasons, time to draft like it. A tackle that needs to be developed is a stupid pick, in the first round Bucs need play-makers on both sides of the ball. Draft the DT and OT’s in the late rounds.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Kinlaw not a bad consolation prize at all….

  24. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Build to strength is not a bad way to go…

  25. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    @Jimmy Jack

Sorry I meant trade up for a tackle. Not trade down I agree with you I am saying I am fine taking Kinlaw then trading back up into the late first/early second for a right tackle.

  26. Bird Says:

Gronk saying he wants to play with bucs
Talking with pats to release him

  27. Bruce Blahak Says:

Don’t know what round or position Malcolm Perry fits but the kids a football player. Returner. Receiver. Back?

  28. Rayjay1122 Says:

Gronk will be a Buc. He wants to be back in NFL with Bucs and Brady. The other stuff will get worked out with the Pats.

  29. nick Says:

won’t need a TE, NFL network is report GRONK is interested in playing for Bucs. What can we get for a Howard? the heck with Gronk/Hernandez, Gronk/Brate baby!

  30. Killian Says:

Ian Rapoport Reports Gronk has told New England he wants to be traded to Bucs.

  31. Rayjay1122 Says:

Was just reported on NFL Network

  32. nick Says:

send the Pats OJ, Bella can get the most out of him

  33. Ocala Says:

    GRONK!!!!!

  34. gofortheface30 Says:

Lets talk about Gronk RIGHT NOW

  35. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

If Wills and Thomas are gone, which is looking likely, then trading down to the 20s and taking Isaiah Wilson would be my move. If we’re stuck at 14 and those 2 are gone then you take your BPA on your board. Whether that’s a DT, WR, Safety…good teams dont reach cuz of need they take the BPA and move on.

  36. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Trading OJ for Gronk straight up would be silly. We would have to get some picks as well.

  37. Bird Says:

Patriots have no power over gronk
Bucs could give a 7th next year

  38. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Can we stop acting like the “top 4” OTs are all sure fire pro bowlers? There is a thing called a “bust”. All 4 could easily suck, too. The point is that nobody knows. Maybe NOT picking the last of the “big 4 OTs” is the correct move?

  39. Bucsalltheway Says:

If we get gronk on a trade that proves tom will be running Pat’s offense.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Brady plays on the offensive side of the ball, and the Bucs need to win right this second. Defensive line prospects generally do nothing their rookie years, and in any case do nothing to help Brady on offense.

Want to help Brady on offense? Have a legitimate 3rd WR option if the top 4 tackles are gone.

  41. GhostofSchiano Says:

I’m seeing reports Gronk is back and traded to Tampa for a 7th

  42. Mike Johnson Says:

Agree. Don’t push the tackle issue. If one of the top 4 is not there, opt for Kinilaw or another need. Be smart Bucs. trading back is also not a bad idea if the players buc want are not there.

  43. The Coroner Says:

    Yep.
No “5th” tackle is worth #14.
Passing up Kinlaw to trade back. Get a late first round OT and a late pick would be stupid!
Oops – it IS the Bucs. 😳
