Who gets No. 12?
So now that it is official that Tom Brady is your new Bucs quarterback, one overall question remains.
Who gets to wear No. 12 when the Bucs break out their new uniforms?
People assumed that when Brady signed, the current No. 12, receiver Chris Godwin, would have to give it up. In an interview with Casey Phillips of Buccaneers.com, Godwin doesn’t have any desire to give it up.
For now.
Godwin said his phone has been blowing up and getting flooded with questions about No. 12.
“Obviously if he doesn’t want it or if he doesn’t make a big deal of it, I’m going to keep it,” Godwin said.
But Godwin also noted he is slightly leaning toward giving it up, only because of the “respect” for what Brady has accomplished in his career.
“We will see.”
Godwin also said Brady called him up and they chatted, but the subject of No. 12 did not come up.
“He reached out to me,” Godwin said of his call with Brady. “He said he was excited.”
And so too is Godwin.
“Getting an opportunity to play with him is a blessing,” Godwin said. “It will be really cool when he gets down here and we get to work.”

i trust whatever decision this young man comes up with, it will be the right decision for him. Godwin has leadership written all over him. Class act.

Why wouldn’t Brady change numbers? I would think it is a way to show love to your new team and kinda give your old team (which opted to let you go) the big finger…. Joe Montana and many others did it.

If Godwin ever wants to see the ball thrown his way he would offer the jersey now! Not to say that Brady is vengeful, but why take the chance. Seems like a no brainer to me. Lol.

Brady’s whole brand is TB12. Of course he wants it. Godwin is a class act and a smart dude. He knows a number isn’t going to make any difference to what he does on the field. He’s going to give it up and it’s not going to be a big deal. He’s just ready to win.

The Bucs pull out all the stop to get TB12 to come to the Bucs..
Make a big thing of it and the Bucs could Just trade Godwin and hand the #12 to Tom themselves…
It would be in Godwin’s best interest if he wants to stay in Tampa, To show an action of good faith and just offer it to Tom!

Wasn’t he “10” in college? Seems like a reasonable change.
I do remember reading a story about a former Giants kicker in the 90s/00s who kept changing numbers as people came to the team and he said on NFL NETWORK that with all the money he made doing it, he put BOTH kids through college… something like 3 number changes.

New start for Brady so he may want a new number and just cut ties with the Patriot era. CG has a HOF career ahead of him and he may want to keep #12 as he moves forward. We’ll see. I’m sure if Brady wanted 12 Chris would give it to him….for a price. 😁

These are two squared away men. I would hate to think this something like who wears number 12 could even cause the least bit of friction… Rightfully the number is Godwin’s .. but if for some reason Brady feels some positive connection or lucky vibe or anything you want to call it with number 12 then give him the damn shirt… Anything that’s a positive hand can move this team in a positive direction should be the total focus…
As a secondary note isn’t it so cool to see the buccaneers on every sports channel around the clock and it’s not because we did something stupid,.. really really cool… I’ve been a bucs fan since their inception which I believe was a 1976 I was 11 years old… I have never turned my back on the bucs I have always been a fan and I have never in my life seen this much positive attention and positive expectations for this team… What a complete Grand slam move i-team Glaser and company…. for the first time in my life I think I’m going to be watching the game and not thinking how are we going to lose this game if I work behind I want to be like how we going to win this one because I’m not going to have it doubt….so very Kool

Football…all professional sports are just entertainment. I realize that #1 on the entertainment list is winning. But what comes after that and how far behind?
Our blog troll literally stops at #1. If Jeffrey Dalmer could play QB Maxipad would be down with signing him and even providing a freezer in the locker room to store the body parts…if only he can win.
I enjoy rooting for the entire athlete. When I realized just how bright Suh really is and what a Renaissance man…saw him interviewed at the French Open Tennis tourney I became a big fan.
Right now a strong argument could be made that ME13 and CG are two of the top if not the top WR’s in the league. But one thing is UNDENIABLE!
We have the classiest two WR’s in the entire league. I like and respect class and brains as well as simple talent.
These guys are the anti OBJ…Antonio Brown arrogant egomaniacs. I have soooo much respect for these two and admire that ME13 was so comfortable in his skin that when CG blew up ME was very supportive.
Our locker room may be the best anywhere in the NFL right now and Brady will complete the deal.

The answer to this question is simple-
Whatever Tom Brady wants.
If he wants to start fresh with a new number in Tampa, so be it.
If he wants number 12 because of the TB12 brand, then Godwin needs a new number.
It’s a simple as that

TB12 means Tom Brady is wearing #12 in Tampa Bay. However, if he has to do something different he’s gonna stick with something that fits within his brand/logo… maybe #1 but #2 would work better… 2nd team where he wins 2 more SBs before riding off into the sunset in ‘22. Same TB12 logo with separate NE and TB color/stylings and we’re done.
This number debate is sooo much more pleasant than the one around 30/30.
