“Nobody Can Block Vita Vea”

March 24th, 2020

Beast.

Roughly two years ago, Joe heard this cry every day and every night.

It was the chirping of FSU fans who constantly whined, “Why didn’t the Bucs draft Derwin James?”

Because they drafted Vita Vea.

And in Vea’s rookie year, stunted by a preseason injury, these same folks couldn’t see Vea’s play through their tear-filled eyes while drowning their sorrows with Bromosas from Big Storm Brewing.

Last year, while this James struggled with an injury, Vea blew up to not just become one of the best defensive tackles in the game against the run, but to anchor the NFL’s best run defense.

Former offensive lineman and current NFL Network talking head Brian Baldinger took to Twitter to break down Vea’s play last year.

Baldinger cannot stop raving.

“Nobody can block Vita Vea,” Baldinger gushed.

And while Vea is not James, Joe knows without a doubt what Vea is.

A friggin’ beast, that’s what he is.

  1. Hethrew 30 Says:

    He’s definitely coming into his own, but he’s particularly been effective because he’s had #93 next to him, and I don’t mean GMC.

  2. ATLBucs Says:

    Awesome!!! I can’t wait for the season to begin. Now all we have to do is bring Jamies back to backup TB12!!

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

    I was surprised when we took Vea, he didn’t necessarily fit our defense at the time, but he sure does now! FINALLY took a trench player who is effective, to this day there’s people crying for Derwin.

    ATLBucs: I’d sure like to see Jameis as our backup this year. Probably less than 1% chance that happens, though (money, pride, “fans” who’d boo him on the sidelines with his clipboard, etc.).

  4. NOLES Says:

    I for one definitely wanted James & was upset after their rookie campaigns. I will say that I was wrong & I am VERY HAPPY w Vea as our pic. He is truly unique and you heard it only Fletcher Cox & Arnold Donald are better that is rare company..

    I’ll take a bowl of crow bc Vea is making me eat it…. Lol….

  5. Defense Rules Says:

    Nobody IMO can break down a play like Baldy; nobody. He’s awesome. ‘Polynesian Power’? ‘Like playing volleyball with a coconut’? Awesome.

    No question that Vea is a ‘friggin beast’ as Baldy says. But it was having Suh next to him that made OLines ‘pick their poison’ and that makes all the difference IMO. I’ll feel sooo much better once we get him back in the fold. Re-sign Suh quickly JL.

  6. '79 Defense Says:

    ATLBucs and Joe in Michigan,

    I agree. I’d like to see Jameis as a backup too, but understand as well that the chances of that happening are beyond remote.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Yes…..we definitely need Suh……Vea can’t do it alone and with Allen gone we have little depth…..
    Vea was a good draft pick & I believe we got Carlton Davis & MJ Stewart as a bonus along with him.

  8. D-Rome Says:

    If Vea stays healthy throughout his career he will be in the HoF one day. He’s a game wrecker and was one last year. He never quits on a play, even when it’s a run play to the outside.

  9. Buczilla Says:

    One of my favorite players and great in our defense.

  10. BucEmUp Says:

    One on one nobody can block him.Its a joke how no calls were made for holding against him, he was unnlockable.and ot happened every game.Maybe brady brings some help from the refs with him

  11. JP09 Says:

    Vita is awesome, but so is Aaron Donald. Look at Donald’s number with Suh then without, it’ll be intriguing to see how Donald performs next season without Suh. This is why I feel it’s imperative to bring Suh back and then go after Clowney our front 7 will then be like our Offense, pick your poison. These two moves will also provide us with depth along the Dline allowing Bowles to rotate and keep players fresh. We still need a RT so I don’t see them targeting Dline in rd 1 of the draft plus I don’t believe Brown or Kinlaw will be there when we pick. Someone said yesterday Clowney already signed but I haven’t seen that

  12. Defense Rules Says:

    JP09 … Spotrac doesn’t show Clowney as having signed with anyone yet, but with a Market Value of $20 mil that’s way too rich for my blood. Teams can only afford so many high-dollar FAs.

  13. JP09 Says:

    @Defense, I agree not for 20 million. I believe that’s what’s he was seeking, seeing he’s still on the market I believe he overvalued himself and will eventually sign a deal for 15/yr. if we were able to land him for 15 and Suh for 8 that’d be a win in my books. We would then have to make some roster moves to free up cap space for the draft, one restructure could be Gohlston

  14. JP09 Says:

    If just like to see a few more pieces added to the DL then take care of OT in the draft. Right now we’re a Vita injury away from a mediocre at best DL and we have no RT (I know we signed Haeg but I think that’s more a depth move)

  15. Big O Says:

    If the bucks were to offer jameis the backup roll, he’d take it!!!!

  16. WhatTheBuc Says:

    Vea is the strongest guy on the field and he’s still years away from his prime. As for free agency, we need more d-line depth. Clowney is too expensive. The bucs could possibly get Markus Golden at a slight discount because his best season was with Bowles and BA. If we can sign him for 10 million, do it. I’d like some combination of Shelby Harris, Suh and Golden.

  17. Jonzey Says:

    We need to bring Suh back to pair up with the big V

  18. El Buco Realisto Says:

    Interesting stats compared for first two years!!!!!!!!!

    SheMC-93 sacks 4, QB hits 15

    Mount Vea sacks 5.5, QB hits 16

    The sheep were wrong again!!!!!!!!!!! They never even took the time to look up that the chargers had already a very good, and young D-line that was in the top 3 for sacks, so the following year they can afford to take a safety!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. BucBrady Says:

    This is just an example of hindsight bias and sour grapes. In their rookie seasons Vea was on the bench and James went to a pro-bowl–of course fans thought James was a much better pick. It’s not like people are advocating for taking an also-ran–James is a really good player and so is Vea.

  20. westernbuc Says:

    Vita Vea is good regardless of who’s next to him. I swear, McCoy haters are beyond repair.

  21. Chris Says:

    Wonder if sapp will ever admit being was wrong about him.

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    I agree, having Suh next to him helped quite a bit.

  23. LazyMoak Says:

    I hope we draft Kinlaw or the guy from Auburn who I saw for the first falling to the Bucs in a MD

  24. adam from ny Says:

    does anyone remember the terrific wwf tag team champs from back in the day…”the samoans” ???

    well one of those dude is vita’s relative…

    that’s why he is the freakin’ all might beast of the buccaneers

  25. Easy Says:

    “Polynesian Power coming to a city near you.” Love it!

  26. adam from ny Says:

    okay i’m starting to love the “ole helmet chop” he display’s in the brian baldy video…

    he’s straight up ringin’ necks with that funky maneuver !

  27. adam from ny Says:

    bring back his partner in crime “kong suh” right now

  28. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Amazing seeing a man that size moves like he does. Hopefully we can resign Suh and our D takes the next step. Can’t wait for this season to begin

  29. JGhoti86 Says:

    This is awesome. Great stuff. This is JoeBucsFan!

  30. rrsrq Says:

    He has fun doing it too, infectious, he, SMB and D. White will have this defense humming for years, lock down Shaq for a long term contract

  31. ncbucsfan Says:

    Sign Suh! Draft Devon Hamilton, DL, Ohio State, 6’4, 320lbs. Dline depth to replace Beau Allen. Should be available late Day 2 of the draft. Starter if Suh doesn’t sign with us.

  32. D-Rome Says:

    Interesting stats compared for first two years!!!!!!!!!

    SheMC-93 sacks 4, QB hits 15

    He played 6 games in 2011. Over the course of their first two years Vita Vea has played 10 more games.

    It doesn’t matter because they play TWO DIFFERENT POSITIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Sign Suh now!!

  34. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @D-Rome

    And the snap counts show a closer comparison!!!!!!!!!!!

    She-mc 166 snap count first two years
    Mount Vea 172 snap cou first two years

    That is just 6 more plays for the sheep that just had a public education!!!!!!!!!! And they do play different positions, in a different defensive scheme!!!! (Though the schemes) would have been much closer, but she-mc cried in 2016 about not being featured, as the de-facto pass rusher, which the other front 7 would have to cover up for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Not bad for a so-called two down, run stopping, nose tackle, that so many wrongly labeled!!!!!!!!!!

    Come on D-Rome, I expected better from you!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Destinjohnny Says:

    Need suh back

  36. adam from ny Says:

    just thinking out loud here…

    maybe the move is to get an authentic vea jersey, in the all new
    pewter color rush version…

    we all know a brady jersey is coo…but a rare lineman’s jersey is the buttery move…

  37. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    D-Rome Says:
    “He’s a game wrecker and was one last year. He never quits on a play, even when it’s a run play to the outside.”

    Buczilla Says:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    AGREED 100% on ALL counts.
  38. 813bucboi Says:
    str8 beast….
    GO BUCS!!!!
  39. WestChap Says:
    You knew he was the one the minute Bowles signed on. If you’re going to run a 3-4 or multi-front with a lot of 3-4 you need a beast at NT to make it work. Uh, I think maybe Vea is the prototype for that position… power, speed and character. Nice!
  40. WestChap Says:
    BTW, Suh’s biggest contribution is setting tone… we still need him until Vea is fully seasoned but that day is much closer thna one would have thought after VV’s rookie year.
  41. WhyIHateOurFans Says:
    I love Vita Vea!
  42. The Coroner Says:
    They say the games are won on the line. That great defense beats great offense. That is why I wanted Vea over James. In the film you could see Vea making the DBs job easier.
  43. geno711 Says:
    So some clarity for others.
    Nobody cares whether the San Diego Chargers had a good defensive line so they could take a safety.
    El Buco Realist is calling himself a sheep. He is telling us all on this website that Gerald McCoy and Vita Vea are the same in so many ways. He is clarifying that he has no ability to differentiate them and supports that by picking out stats.
    When questioned on different positions and different number of games played, he came back with number of snap counts to support that as a person with the brain of a sheep, there continues to be no difference in them.
    That seems to be what you always get with El Buco Realist.
  44. stpetebucsfan Says:
    He’s unblockable but with just a minimum of a crack of blocking in front of him on offense who could stop Vea.
    Imagine an LB or worse a small safety with Vea’s 6-4 350 lbs of Samoan to stop.
    To make it work though can’t have an OL that lets guys jump into the backfield and stop Vea before he gets started. It’s the old Lynyrd Skynrd classic…”Give me three steps”.
    As many already know Vea was a star running back in HS…inside the five if you give him three steps who is going to stop him? I realize that can be a big IF.
  45. El Buco Realisto Says:
    @Stpetebucsfan
    Wow, Good on you for finally recognizing what those in the know have been saying and some said it months before the drafting of Mount Vea!!!!!!!!!!! It took a lot of guts to stand up and write the truth!!!!!!!!!!! And now that you are finally listening, its time for a “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    The Buc Realist Says:
    January 20th, 2018 at 12:42 pm
    Please free up the LB’s by selecting Mount Vea!!!!!!! trade down and/or pick up a “Man among boys” Vita Vea!!!!!!!! switch to a 3-4 for a point of difference in the division!!!!!!!!!
    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!
  46. sincethebeginning Says:
    Let’s keep Vea rolling!!!
    One way to ensure that is to RE-SIGN SUH NOW PLEASE JL! His dad’s a contractor, he understands the value of land. Throw some property deals into his contract to bring him in for less of a cap hit. Surely the Glazers own some acreage somewhere……
  47. Rod Munch Says:
    That play is from 2 years ago when the 49ers were starting a 4th on the depth chart QB, behind a line that was starting guys they signed off the street. That was literally the best game Vita has ever played.
    The guy is a good run stuffer, and fits a lot better in the 3-4 than the 4-3, but dominating? Unblockable? Teams don’t really seem to have an issue keeping him away from QBs. But blocking him in the run game is where he is a huge issue.
  48. David Says:
    Awesome!!
    They need to complement him, I wish they would sign Suh back
  49. SteveK Says:
    Wrecking ball. I hope we can bring Suh back.
  50. Kiko Says:
    Well if I pin Vita’s huge success to having Suh, well what about AD99 with the Rams who benefitted greatly in 2018 with his best season beside Suh.
