“I Have Never Seen Someone Like Him”

March 5th, 2020

Prefer thrills or safety?

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles has noted perhaps the best description of Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Beckles says if you say Jameis sucks you are right, and if you say Jameis is a top-shelf baller you are right.

It seems Nick Wright agrees with Beckles.

The co-host of “First Things First,” seen weekday mornings on FS1, tried to make sense of the Bucs’ quarterback drama, especially in the wake of Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians openly pining for future Hall of Famer and free agent to be Tom Brady.

Beginning at the 4:14 mark in the video below, Wright tries to break down the pros and cons of both Brady and/or Jameis being the Bucs quarterback in 2020.

Like Beckles, Wright thinks Jameis is equal parts brilliant as well as downright horrible.

“Jameis is unlike any player I have ever seen,” Wright said. “Because Jameis is — if you showed me highlights, a cutup, of Jameis’ 25 best throws from last season, you could convince someone, ‘Oh, he’s the best quarterback in the NFL — the best!’

“And if you were showed a cutup of his 25 worst throws, you would say, ‘Are these replacement players? Was there a strike and we’ve got scabs playing?’

“I have never seen someone like him. … Jameis, you do not know what you are forgetting, forget from week-to-week, you don’t know what you are going to get from play-to-play. … Do you want the exciting extremes or do you want the boring middle?”

Wright sort of sympathized with Bucs fans thinking Jameis’ excitement value has taken years off their lives.

It’s an interesting conversation Wright and fellow co-host Greg Jennings, the former Packers receiver have about who the Bucs should hitch their 2020 wagon to — aging, declining Tom Brady or the human roller coaster that is Jameis.

The way Wright talked about Jameis and Bucs fans in the video below, it seems he believes those who do not like Jameis lead timid, safe lives and concoct excuses for not crossing the street, and throw their mail in a microwave and douse themselves head-to-toe with hand sanitizer at the top of each hour because of the coronavirus. Yet the folks who like to jump out of perfectly fine airplanes, leap off bridges wearing giant rubber bands and scuba dive with feeding sharks minus the cages are the ones who embrace Jameis’ thrill-a-minute ways.

Joe once heard Wright, who also has a weeknight radio show on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, refer to Jameis as “wildly entertaining.” Joe cannot disagree with that.

3 years 30 million get it over and done with… Go Bucs!!!

  2. FactTeller Says:

PER YEAR THAT IS…60 M GUARENTEED. Before new cap and CBA goes up.
Once Mahomes Resets Market at 40/yr we will be considering this a steal.

  3. Jonzey Says:

I agree Franchise Winston I believe he will be a pro bowler this year

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

FactTeller- So you want to give him a guaranteed $60 million without even knowing if he’s capable of not turning the ball over at historic rates?
Had you said 2 years $25 million with one year guaranteed, that would make more sense.
And lets be frank, after watching Mahomes play, Jameis isn’t even in the same league.

  5. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

Just jumped out of an airplane this past weekend yet I’m not a fan of inaccurate QBs who routinely give the ball away in clutch nut kicking moments.

  6. martinii Says:

I think most fans believe the play of the QB is an important ingredient when considering the success or failure of a franchise. So as I drink my coffee and visit my my passion for the first but not the last time today I am introduced to a new set of commentators that I am not familiar with that like most are on the “Good Jameis. Bad Jameis bandwagon. (A coin flip at best) The solution is somewhere between Tom Brady and Andy Dalton and we are all being kept in the dark for at least 2 more weeks while our personal opinions are a non issue. My morning coin flip comes up tales which at least until tomorrow means keep him for another year at the lowest price possible and if he walks so be it, I am done with my coffee and it is time to go back to bed. I’m retired…….

  7. Defense Rules Says:

FactTeller … With Mahomes the Chiefs sleep in the penthouse. With Winston the Bucs have been stuck in the cellar. Results count.

  8. Bucnut2 Says:

How abut this Joe- I just want Winston to do something he hasn’t, WIN.

  9. Bob in Valrico Says:

I have to wonder if BA’s health is good enough to withstand another year of Jameis. While Jameis fixed his long ball, He had glaring errors in his short game.
Slow reactions, bad decisions, bad throws and or footwork, getting fooled by the defense are just
some areas to work on. I have serious doubts that Jameis and BA will be able to address all of them successfully in one season.
when we were behind by 7 or less in fourth quarter Jameis had 1 TD and 5 INT’s. You can’t blame that on the kicker! We have a QB who has over 100 QB in the second quarter but by the fourth quarter his QB rate drops to 66%

  10. Pewter power Says:

“I have never seen someone like him. … Jameis, you do not know what you are forgetting, forget from week-to-week, you don’t know what you are going to get from play-to-play. … Do you want the exciting extremes or do you want the boring middle?”

This is the most idiotic fan debate
This is what Winston lovers believe describes a quarterback who just needs a better o line and run game

This describes a franchise quaterback really? Really why on earth would a coach just be saying negative things about a guy they want to keep but drag him down before next season because they want a cheap price, moronic commentary

  11. Nate Says:

I was a paratrooper in the Army and jumped out of perfectly good airplanes. I do not want Jameis back.

  12. Mr. Reality Says:

The stupid Joe who wrote this can’t even prepare a grammatically correct insult of his own readers. Man, what a loser. He couldn’t get a real job anyway. My advice: Go to school, Son, learn football and business, and then give writing about sports another shot.

  13. Bird Says:

Agree. Ive jumped out of plane at 15,000 feet and still feel its time to move on from jameis.

If he stays on short deal without a big number cap hit until we get the next guy ready …i can deal with that (nothing over 20 per)

He will never win the big game …sorry . And thats what it should all be about.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Am I alone or is there anyone else that will be glad when this is over?

  15. SmoothBayRider Says:

Nick Wright is a moronic talking head . Also , “The people who don’t want Jameis leave safe boring lives” analogy has to be one of the worst ones I have ever heard . I’d say the people who want Jameis back are like the guy who keeps giving his cheating girlfriend chance after chance thinking she is going to change . If he would have just dumped her years ago , he would have already found a hotter GF who doesn’t cheat .

  16. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    I know what you’re getting. 7-9 with 35 turnovers.

  17. El Buco Realisto Says:

The “real” fans have seen someone like him, and his name was Jeff George!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. TOM Says:

Winsome is crap. If RG was QB in 2019 Bucs would have made the playoffs. No I don,t smoke or drink.

  19. mark2001 Says:

Would be just as easy to say Jameis fans cult of personality minions that don’t care about winning, and only vicariously live through a self-destructive QB’s that will never win more than two or three games in a row.

But I don’t think either Joe or my characterization is correct. They are just fans with differing perspectives and rational or emotional outcomes.

  20. DB55 Says:

I vote exciting extremes. It’s edge of your seat excitement on every play on Sundays.

My take is every year there’s been complaints about some aspect of Jaboo’s game and the next year he improves dramatically. See long ball passes and hitting WRs in stride.

Good money says if you find a RT and a RG and the WRs learn the playbook and fight for the ball like Godwin does on ever play those INTs will go down to 12-15 easy.

He’ll never be a 3-6 int guy but then again no one can score with 2mins on the clock like he does and no one can bring you back from 17-3 deficits like he can.

  21. Coburn Says:

Give me the safe boring qb any day. I’ve bunjee jumped and not worried about corona. Otherwise yeah I’m generally risk adverse

  22. miken Says:

Jameis “wildly entertaining”… very simillar to old Buc Steve DeBerg, who Chris Berman used to say “will keep both teams in the game”
I guess year 6 is the year you find out if I guy can be good consistantly.

  23. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Smoothbay, your analogy is awful. All you haters want to bring in game managers and retirees and run off a guy that at times looks like the “best QB in the NFL.” You don’t want to give him one more year to see what he can do because you are scared. What is the true upside in 2021 and 2022 if we bring in a 43 yo QB for a year. You should be really scared of that outlook.

Joe, you really should Mr Anonymous. I know if this was my site I would run a poster that was that rude and insulting.

  24. D-Rome Says:

Yet the folks who like to jump out of perfectly fine airplanes, leap off bridges wearing giant rubber bands and scuba dive with feeding sharks minus the cages are the ones who embrace Jameis’ thrill-a-minute ways.

    Uh huh.

I served in the military, am a certified scuba diver and have done dives with sharks, am active in combat sports for 14+ years, I ski and will hike to areas where chairlifts can’t go, ect. and I STILL believe that Jay-Miss is not the future.

  25. OneBuc55 Says:

I like Jameis and would like to see him extended but only for the scratch and dent discount…

20 to 25 mill a year max with incentives…also maybe some front loaded guaranteed money so we’re not handcuffed if he starts to stink it up again…

I’ve been a Bucs fan for 35 years and I do believe in the QB curse that we have here in the Bay…He has gotten better at certain things every year and once if ever he can shake this turnover bug he’s a top 5 QB imo…

Its kind of frustrating for me as a Bucs fan because he’s so good outside of the pocket but we never run any plays that allow him to play to his strengths..

    The drama continues…

  26. JBucs Says:

Awww! Looks like Joe hurt Mr. Reality’s feelings. Poor little baby

  27. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

To win the Super Bowl you need at least 3 mistake free games in a row. Excitement is fine, but inconsistency is a killer for a championship.

  28. Robert Says:

    what about losing is entertaining?

  29. BrianBucs Says:

The boring middle wins games. The excitement does not.
Bucs can’t win or be a good team with that kind of inconsistency at QB.
Time to move on from Winston

  30. The Coroner Says:

I am a Jameis supporter who has jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, scuba dived to 200 feet, rocketed down the side of a mountain on my motorcycle and driven a car at 155 miles an hour.
Those days are long gone. Not sure if Jameis’ days as a Buc should be also.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

since when did “excitement” equal WINS!!!!?….

if you want excitement, go down to ybor…..

if you want WINS, get TEDDY!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  32. Craig Says:

I drank the Kool-Aid when Jameis was drafted. I fell out of his cult before the third year because he seemed to get worse instead of better.

There is no reason for him to come back and drag the franchise a couple of more steps backward.

I also have never seen anything like him, Every step forward erases two steps he already completed. He gained some accuracy in his long ball this year. To pay for it his short game fell apart and he got even more fixated on staring down receivers.

It will not get noticeably better next season.

  33. D1 Says:

    DB55,

You’re right about winston improving his deep ball accuracy and timing. But there’s nothing to the notion that winston improves an aspect of his game each year.

The following is a draft analysis from the NFL network,

“WEAKNESSES Decision making not consistent with his football intelligence.”

(This remains an issue. A huge one!)

“Will throw into impossible windows rather than taking safe throw underneath.”

    (As does this)

” Elongated windup and release allows instinctive defenders to close on throws. ”

    (Ditto)

“Was too easily baited into dangerous throws. ”

(This past season was probably the worst of any year)

“Struggled with intermediate passing game in 2014, completing 56.8 percent of his passes with FBS-leading 11 interceptions in that range. ”

(Still is struggling with the short and intermediate level, most ints in these levels)

“Still learning nuances of position and how to move and hold defenders with his eyes. ”

(Year 5 and he still hasn’t mastered this skill.)

“Would sleepwalk through first half of many games. ”

(Definitely has improved in this aspect. But the sleepwalking still exists but now it’s in the 3rd quarter )

“Inconsistent footwork and weight transfer caused balls to sail. ”

    (Check and check!)

“Prone to emotional outbursts on field.”

(This year he’s made tremendous strides and there was no outbursts like in years past)

” Quality of decision-making drops off substantially when pocket becomes turbulent and he’s forced to leave it.”

    (I don’t agree with that then and I don’t now! )

” Off-the-field character and ability to lead on NFL level are his primary obstacles, according to NFL evaluators.”

(There’s ample evidence that Winston hasn’t been the leader he was drafted to be. He’s a great teammate and guys seem to love him. But that’s not leadership. I have been shocked by the lack of support he’s received from his teammates this year. Disappointed, is more accurate. Not with Jameis but his teammates. But they’re opinion is what counts and it’s not the man that seems to be an issue. It’s the player. Unfortunately this means that there’s no dramatic improvement in this area as well)

DB55, there’s multiple areas of his game that’s in need of dramatic improvement. If Winston is able to address one per year, do the math! It’s ugly. And that assumes that once improvement in a specific portion of his game is fixed,it remains, “fixed”. Otherwise, add another year.

I’m a fan of winston, but I don’t shy away from the real issues that are preventing him from being a great QB. Nor do I embrace magical thinking. The type that believes one more year and poof winston has magically changed into an elite player.

Unfortunately, there’s no shortage of fans who have embraced this thinking. You don’t seem to fall into that category. So realistically, how many areas of his game can he improve this off season? What areas are you going to be looking at first for dramatic improvement? Any guess what is the required time line to see the issues, identified pre draft, improved in light of the knowledge that they have not been fixed in 5yrs?

  37. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I have to admit that there is an element of the EXCITEMENT of his game that I would truly miss. I think that has a lot to do with my having been such a fan.

I LOVE having a QB that NEVER throws it short of the sticks on 3rd Down.

I LOVE having a QB who REGULARLY converts 3rd and 15’s.

Maybe that is why I have been so willing to look past the mistakes. — I have gotten to a point, though, when I truly accept that whatever is to be will be. If it is time for him to move on, than I will be ok with what is next.

    But man, I won’t lie.
I am going to miss those things.

  38. gotbbucs Says:

    Winning is fun, losing sucks.
Turnovers in the end will likely cause you to lose, and here’s the thing that I don’t hear anyone talk about. When it isn’t an interception, how many easy underneath routes does this guy miss that should be easy chain moves? It’s crazy.
He was an exciting college QB, but the things that made him exciting on Saturdays it turns out will destroy your team on Sundays at the next level. He is the exact same QB that he was in college. He hasn’t adjusted his game at all, he just has better receivers now.

  39. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ For all the talk about Jordan Love…. his game seems very similar to that of Jameis at FSU.

You sure as hell don’t want to miss if he could end up being the next Mahomes.

But man, you just don’t have a way to know.

  40. stpetebucsfan Says:

    D-1

That was an excellent takedown of DB55 Jameislove. You hit all the salient points that DB seems to wish to overlook.

My only additional thought is that IMHO the reason all these things have happened is JW is a choker. That’s why everybody struggles to fit his sometimes amazing talent with his frequently equally AMAZING buffoonery.

I’ve never seen an NFL QB play as poorly as JW did last year in that infamous Cincinnati game. It was awe inspiring in a negative sort of way.

It’s not just the bad decisions…it’s the timing and how frequently the occur at horrid times and in the most important games.

JW is reported to be an incredibly hard worker…possessing lots of football knowledge..a cannon for an arm…and the ability to sometimes drop dimes into tiny windows…so what can explain all the inexplicable things…JW is a choker!

We’ve all choked. It’s why I finally grew wise an gave up golf. As a 9th grader I saw my first curve ball in a youth league baseball game. I totally bailed…fear..choking..whatever..struck out on three straight called strikes.

I figured that out and went out for the track team next year. LOL. Sadly in truth that might be the solution for JW…go out for baseball again and forget football.

What do we call athletes who make the majority of their mistakes in the biggest games with it all on the line…we call them Jameis Winston.

  41. Defense Rules Says:

The word ‘excitement’ in the Bucs’ dictionary means … ‘What new and exciting way are we gonna find to lose this week’? Admit it, when the Bucs are trailing by 3 points with 2 minutes to go in the game and Jameis drops back to pass at our own 25-yard-line, what goes through your mind?

Is it ‘We got this. Just 75 yards & we win the game.’

Or is it “All we have to do is make it to their 35-yard-line and we could tie the game with a FG’.

Or is it ‘PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t throw another interception’.

Usually followed by ‘Damn, he did it again.’ No sweat though, this is THE YEAR all that gets fixed. Maybe.

  53. D1 Says:

    Stpete,

    Good evening.

I appreciate your post, but I will respectfully disagree with your conclusions.
However, it’s possible that you’re description of winston as a choker is correct . But your word choice is throwing me off.

Choker is a very specific word when applied to an athlete. The word implies that pressure is the variable and when applied the player melts down. Your personal experiences as a guide to how you use the term is where I find myself . What you experienced, I wouldn’t ever consider choking. More succinct would be you became aware of your limits . Self actualization!
    ……Pardon my drifting .

Winston , imo, isn’t a choker. He’s been great in high pressure situations and Hes been awful. A choker fails in the face of pressure. Winston fails pre game warmup. He’s succeeded with situations where he’s been playing with it all on the line. Ex. less than a minute to go ball on our own 10yd line and the teams needs 6pts to win.

Yes, He’s failed as well. But I genuinely like winston in situations where the stakes are high, the preassure is on, helps focus some people. People with A.D.D. in particular. Winston’s personality exhibits many of the same behavioral characteristics as people diagnosed with A.D.D. If that’s correct, pressure isn’t an issue.

Bottomline, Winston has been able to play at an extremely high level without mastering the fundamentals of his position. This causes inconsistent performance. His raw talent is truly special. His ability to succeed has given him a bad feedback loop, if you will. The comments that he makes, “I just gotta be me”, “play my game”, tells you this is true. As does, the answer we all know too well, “I just gotta get better”. He’s saying that he’s got zero specific plans , but he understands the problem. There’s a guy who never worked on the details or faced a time when he couldn’t just wing it.

When you draft a player at #1 , it’s more than likely a guy like winston who has excelled at every level and it was easy. It’s up to the GM to think about the person and the player will react when dealing with their first taste of adversity.
Character is important, but so are other things, and no one has them 100% correct foolproof just yet. I’m recalling how idiotic and embarrassing lichts behavior was right after drafting winston. He was like a school girl with a crush. So I’m going to suggest, Licht didn’t prepare for situations like this.
He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.

I throw this out there because, for winston to succeed he’s got to get his head on right. He needs guidance and a plan. The bull crap fan boys throw out he needs a runNing game, a kicker, blah blah blah ..all of it is so much fluff . Zero substance. Kinda like winston, when you get right down to it.

This is why, I’ll bash the brain dead cult of jameis followers and their higher than thou self belief that they possess a deeper understanding of the game than any mere mortals, while they offer up the most superficial and self evident answers. They support winston with an abundance of arrogance and a minimum of insight. I’m saying this because I see that the haters, hate these guys, way more than they do winston.

Why no one can work with winston is a whole new conversation for another time.
