$6 Million+ Per Year For Gerald McCoy

March 18th, 2020

Waiting

So what kind of contract is Ndamukong Suh seeking to return to the Bucs?

That’s unclear. Suh earned $9.25 million with Tampa Bay last season and as of Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., there’s no news that he has re-signed.

Jason Pierre-Paul is back, and Carl Nassib belongs to the Las Vegas Raiders.

One defensive tackle with a new contract is six-time Buccaneers Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy. He’s got a three-year, roughly $20 million deal with the Cowboys, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

McCoy had five sacks last season in 16 games for the Panthers, which led the NFC in sacks. However, the Panthers were brutal against the run. Suh was an ironman for the Bucs’ stud run defense. He also largely was an inconsistent pass rusher; he didn’t win nearly enough 1-on-1 battles.

Will McCoy’s contract sort of set the bottom of the market for Suh? Joe hopes for Suh’s return, but he might want a long time on making a decision, just like he did last year. Are the Bucs offering $8 million and an incentive? Would that be enough?

  1. J Says:

    If Suh wants to win a SB this is his best last chance to get it done and should take a discounted market price if that’s what’s offered.

  2. SB Says:

    WOW I just heard a stat: The Bucs had 7 losses last yr by single digits.

    In those 7 games JW3 turned the ball over EIGHTEEN TIMES!

  3. J Says:

    I mean come on, a possibility to be in the SB here in Tampa this year and then in 2021 be in NE for the SB next year. That’s got glory written all over it and you don’t fight about price if you wanna be on board.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

    SB

    per the JW apologist: INTs arent a big deal!!!!..how many yards did he have in those games?…lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  5. J Says:

    SB I saw that yesterday. That’s not gonna happen this year guaranteed! TB could turn this team into a dynasty with all the talented coaches on staff and youth we already possess. Things are about to get VERY CRAZY, just wait!

  6. Marine Buc Says:

    Suh should get @ $7 mil per season for two seasons. That’s it.

  7. reply Says:

    With what money Joes??! So we use the remaining cap space on him and sign our draft picks. This team still has glaring needs which will require some more cap space now that Twilight Tom has ate up a little more than half of what we had left. This is so gonna blow up in the Glazers faces. What a sad two days a Bucs fan.

    #TheBeginningOfTheEnd

  8. SOEbuc Says:

    EVERY F#CKING PLAYER ON THIS TEAM SHOULD TAKE A PAY CUT OR SIGN CHEAPER WITH TOMMY.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. JimmyJack Says:

    813 there aren’t no more Winston apologists. There is nothing to apologize for no more. Quit living in the past.

    Well, alright. Get out the last of it for the next few day.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    8mil should get it done…..

    after the season i said offer him 3years 21mil with 16guaranteed…

    not only are we paying him to stuff the run, we’re paying him for his leadership….

    i would still like us to sign either leonard floyd or linval joseph to a 1year deal…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. JimmyJack Says:

    Suh is my biggest priority right now. It needs to be the Bucs.

    We gotta get back that top run stop. That aren’t happening with a rookie.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    SOE

    i agree….

    we should go to jensen, brate, d.smith, marpet, gholston and say, “let me holla at you real quick”…lol…

    shift some of their money around so we could bring back SUH, perriman, RT and RB….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    We have to realize that paying Brady $30 mil is going to cost us a couple of players……Nassib was #1……Suh may be # 2…..or Perriman…..I’m now starting to think we keep Brate….

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

    If we get Suh I’m just blown away. First Shaq…JPP…Suh? That would be awesome and a commitment to the defense for Brady.

    We have to set aside a draft pick for the “backup” hopefully next QB…a running back and obviously the priority and mean nasty offensive tackle to complete our OL.

    After that it’s fine tuning for depth and perhaps the safety position.

    I was sucked into believing Brady would destroy the cap. But he hasn’t. He’s simply going to earn the going rate for starting QB’s. Ian Rappaport reports the deal tops out at 30 million if Brady earns all his incentives.

    So…30 million for Brady…or 25 million (tagged est.) for JW. There is risk with both…Brady’s age…JW’s head…both could have great seasons next year…Investment is considering risk versus reward. For five million I’m thrilled with the gamble on Brady rather than saving less than Brates’ salary by not signing the GOAT.

    The best “bargain’ perhaps for guys who worry about the cap was Teddy…he took 21 million for three years from the Panthers.

    So…we could have saved 9 million or less..depending on Bradys incentives with Teddy. I like Teddy…preferred him over JW…but for an additional nine I gotta roll the dice with the GOAT.

    I’ve just been talking about on field performance…when you bring in the rest…instant credibility…chance to sign or resign some players who want to play with the GOAT…and something we’ve talked about forever…”culture change”.

  15. MadMax Says:

    Get it done Licht and Suh! $10 mill and all is good….AGREED?

  16. Buc You Says:

    We’ll trade a 3rd and 6th for Fournette next then draft a RT in the 1st and a S in the 2nd. Book it.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

    Tampabaybuc fan…….Not necessarily true. Unless I’m wrong here……….What is stopping the Bucs from backloading Tom’s contract.

    Give him a Drew Brees deal. That’s would I would do. Give him a dead Cap hit for the year you figure he will retire. Now in that year you eat dead money but if it goes according to plan you have a young cheap QB ready to take over. That could easily free up CAP sapce this year while Tom only counts someing like 20M against it.

  18. boldnewera Says:

    Juss sayin…

    Looking more into these rumblings of Bucs trading for Gurley…

    Per OTC, the Rams would have to EAT $12.6 million of Gurley’ s $17.25 million contract for 2020 If they trade him, leaving the Bus to ONLY have to pay $4.65 million for Gurley 2020!! Then…there is zero guaranteed cash in his contract beyond 2020. Zero.

    Dang…no wonder. Juss sayin.

    Dude would arrive with chip on his shoulder, slight knee issue or not. Load management.

  19. Juggernautical Says:

    I think it’s a toss up. Running out of money and still need a RB, RT, DL (if suh leaves), Saftey (maybe?), and WR3. Gonna get super interesting

  20. D-Rome Says:

    Tampabaybucfan,

    It was already determined a month ago that Perriman is not coming back. That was during the owners meetings in February.

  21. Posey99 Says:

    Tom Brady, Jason Licht, Bruce Arians and the glazers don’t have time to develop players at this point. We just went all in. I expect Suh to come back and for us to grab some top talent. Even if it means trading picks

  22. boldnewera Says:

    *Bucs

  23. JimmyJack Says:

    30M is Brady’s average salary. The way they structure his salary can be totally different.

  24. El Buco Realisto Says:

    Looks like Dallas finally got their “man”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Word on the street back in the offseason of 2018, was that Dallas was trying to acquire she-mc93 for as high as two second rounders, which the Bucs coaches were all for, especially some defensive coaches that wanted to run a 3-4 flex defense, like in 2016 before she-mc complained and ended up having to run incompetent lovie’s obsolete defensive scheme so she-mc93 could get her numbers!!!!!!!!!!! She-mc’s agent caught wind and she-mc ran it too the higher ups who put the stop to it, which then she-mc93 quickly put out the statement, that “I’m staying”!!!!!!!!!!!! Then in free agency, licht bulb acquired all those slappies to “build around gmc”!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it failed miserably!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That is why the following year, they tried to trade she-mc, but had no value and then cut she-mc93, without the coaches ever meeting with her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Adrnagy Says:

    There’s football to be played…. you act like if licht ,Bruce,Brady and your two face won the super bowl already.

    We won’t win with the unproven defense we have. Saints will trash us and old man Brady won’t be able to catch up with his “ tom /Bruce offense”.

  26. Adrnagy Says:

    Tom Brady has to prove he can win … without bill, Edelman ,

    This draft has to be on point , for immediate impact and future dline.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ JimmyJack

    You could be right but I was simply assuming the $30 or so would be this year….

    But you have to consider the additional money for Shaq……plus about $12 mil…from last year….

  28. JimmyJack Says:

    Adrnagy…..Look for Devin White to be the difference maker and how our defense can hold up against the Saints.

    Also Todd Bowles is probably spending most of his off-season time divising how he can get Suh past their AllPro line. So he can hit Bress as hard as he hit Matt Ryan. Ryan managed to get back up……and starting throwing picks. Bress might not be that lucky.

    GO BUCS!!!

  29. Robert Says:

    2 yrs, 7 mill a yr, 10 mill guaranteed should do it. I’n the mean time we draft to develop players when he and Brady and JPP are done.

    That’s the way it should be done, but with such a losing team they have always been in the “fill a gap/need” mode.

  30. Adrnagy Says:

    I’m more concern in the back ups or depth upfront in the dline. And safety is mystery.
    And Brees knows very well our secondary.

    I don’t underestimate Todd. IMO is one of the best.

  31. JimmyJack Says:

    Tampabaybuc……Shaq is a good point. Signing him long-term could be another big benefit. That give us more CAP flexibility as you can push around some of his money.

    I would also extend Jensen and maybe even Lavonte to get more cash. Marpet is another guy you could look to extend…….I’d leave no stone unturned…….If we going all in then let’s get real about it and find a way to get that RT and RB in free agency like 813 is saying.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Forget the discount. Give him $10 million and call it a day. We have a bunch of space left!

  33. JimmyJack Says:

    How does Bress know our secondary very well? He played them once. And wasn’t we led by VHIII in that game?

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Buc You

    Not sure I’m quite ready to “book it” but it certainly works for me.

    Fournette would be a great addition. I do not keep up with the Jags…so I do not his current relationship with them…or how healthy he is…but he certainly has the numbers and would be an excellent combo with ROJO.

    He earns just a shade under 7 milion….might be tough to squeeze under our cap.

    Certainly RT first…then…safety,,perhaps…but a solid QB to backup Brady and give us something for the future might need to go in the 2nd…if we could get Jalen Hurt in the 3rd or another acceptable QB that could free up the 2nd round pick.

    Jason Licht bashing is popular here but frequently it’s hyperbole. E.G. He’s done and excellent job with UDFA’s…let’s hope he can find some more diamonds in the rough like Brate and Hump.

  35. Kgh4life Says:

    Not surprised that the panthers were brutal against run, thats Mccoy’s weakness. I could count numerous times where Mccoy would rush up field past the ball carrier and the running back goes right into the hole that Mccoy vacated.

  36. JustBucNwin Says:

    We now have leverage on EVERY FA!

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    We have $36 million left. We need around $6-$8 million for the draft.

    That leaves at least $28 million left for free agency.

    Much better than last year, and we can still free some up if we need to.

  38. Bill Gootee Says:

    The Panthers’ gave up a lot of rushing yards once they added McCoy. Loki for the Cowboys to be soft against the run.

  39. Adrnagy Says:

    Just the last season game Brees toss 3 TD .

    But b.s to the side. Brees vs Brady twice … will be great. Brady playing Brees at New Orleans … can’t wait to see that one

    I just pulled up Brady Playing indoors. Since we will be playing 3 games
    Brady has played 92% of his games outdoors..

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Shaq counts as $15,828,000 against the cap. Now way does a deal with him cost less than that. It would not save us money.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

    I’m not worried too much about our DL depth. Gholston had his best year of his career IMO last year. That taco guy was a solid little player too.

    And if your counting our Edge players they got Shaq off the streets last year for pennies. They won’t be finding another 19 sack guy like that but it looks like they know what to look for at that position. I’d give our scouting team all the confidence to make hay at that position if we invest a couple bucks on a free agent and give them a draft pick.

    We do got that Nelson guy too who made the team last year. Not much to be nervous about at that position.

  42. Adrnagy Says:

    Tommy plays good indoors.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

    Bonzai that’s not true. It is if you look at average salary. But if look only at 2020 CAP hit they could very easily give Shaq a big fat signing bonus and make it a smaller CAP hit in 2020 while making it a larger CAP hit in the following years.

    Teams get a lot more flexibility with long-term deal. No flexibility with tags.

  44. Adrnagy Says:

    Every season plays out different, you’re assuming our dline will be great. Adding depth helps.
    Let’s say since you’re assuming ….shaq and Devin go down , who do we have right now?

  45. JimmyJack Says:

    I bet Tom plays good in any condition you can look up. Except playing in Miami.

  46. TOM Says:

    7 mil max for Suh.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

    Adrnagy. We don’t have a full team right now. So if Devin goes down we literally don’t have a body to play. Well, maybe we got a practice squad player.

    But we had Minter last year. He was a sold depth player. If we can get him back great…..Otherwise the team is probably upgrading.

    I don’t see nothing to worry about at MLB.

    With Edge we just lost Nassib. There I can understand your concern. Nassib will not be easily replaced. But when I see that we scouted Shaq on the cheap I have a realistic level of faith that our front office knows what to look for at that position. I’m confident they can find us a good player at Edge……Why wouldn’t I be?

  48. El Buco Realisto Says:

    Why low ball Suh because she-mc93 is garbage!!!!!!!!! Someone needs to look up qb hits between the two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    because “Every season plays out different”…..right?….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  50. TDTB Says:

    A lot of good comments on here…especially regarding Teddy v Tom. I’ll admit I was in the Teddy camp, but it is undeniable that Tom was the better “business” decision. There is now way a Teddy signing would result in the season ticket run that’s happened since yesterday. Now way. No how. At up to $9M a year more for Brady, the Bucs brass have/will more than make it back.

  51. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Didn’t McCoy grow up a Cowboys fan? I thought I remembered him saying that on a show, once.

    So, will he finally make the playoffs?

    Suh is definitely worth more than Gerald.
    I REALLY hope we get him signed.

  52. Adrnagy Says:

    Bucboi…
    Unproven defense yes, just like Winston lost game our defense lost games. Winston is gone. Our defense is here. And so far only two additions , so if the next season is different as we speak then we haven’t address depth in LB,Edge,DT.,DE …. leaving cb as they are great and will be , but safety? We can assume Evans will be great coming off injury ? Or whitehead ?

    So get off my di**** and stop bouncing around.

  53. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    JimmyJack Says:
    “Suh is my biggest priority right now. It needs to be the Bucs.”

    ~~~~~~~~
    With ya, man!
    He played a HUGE roll in the success of that whole line last year.
  54. Slugglife go straight to moderation Says:
    Good to see all the people who had no problem paying JW 30 mil now worried about resigning other players.
  55. Mike Johnson Says:
    Suh is a money man. can’t blame him though. Somebody will..pay him more than our Bucs. Its just a fact. I mean we did just spend 30 mil on a..Bionic man right?
  56. Snook Says:
    Bwaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha!!!!!
    This guy just keeps stealing money. Amazing.
  57. Bucsfan951 Says:
    I don’t know about y’all but the potential of suh?/JPP/David/white leading the defense while Brady/Evans/Godwin/Jensen leading the offense. I just went from 6 to midnight downstairs.
    This should be exciting times ahead. Hopefully all of the fans can eventually come together and enjoy the ride together
  58. Bucs Guy Says:
    Sign Suh (1 or 2 years), dump Allen, draft a DT in the 2nd. There’s 3 or 4 that could be available and worthy of the #35 pick. Re-sign Rochos. There’s your Defensive interior. You got Shaq, JPP and the kid from Iowa. Restructure Gholson’s deal for less (he’s overpaid) and pick up a back up edge rusher in the draft or FA. Now you’re set for hopefully the next 1-2 years. Start thinking about JPP’s replacement in the draft next year.
    Now you need a S, veteran CB, re-sign Minton and a late rd LB. Your defense is set.
    OT in the 1st, WR in the 3rd, RB and G/C in the 4th for offense.
  59. WestChap Says:
    People! If Suh is willing to play for $7-8, you say thank you. If he’s got his eyes on a French chateau and needs $9, pay him! Now. We’re more than halfway across the bridge to a brighter future… don’t get cheap on the key ingredients now!
  60. Pigsueybucsfan Says:
    How about offering Miami a 5th rounder for Josh Rosen and let him sit behind TB for a year or two to learn from him and our quarterback whisper could be a diamond in the rough
  61. WestChap Says:
    And, oh by the way, if GMC recognized last year that he owed us 2 years for that $13M last year on his contract that he was “insulted” to have questioned he’d be here for the national coming out party that will be 2020!
  62. El Buco Realisto Says:
    Word on the street back in the offseason of 2018, was that Dallas was trying to acquire she-mc93 for as high as two second rounders, which the Bucs coaches were all for, especially some defensive coaches that wanted to run a 3-4 flex defense, like in 2016 before she-mc complained and ended up having to run incompetent lovie’s obsolete defensive scheme so she-mc93 could get her numbers!!!!!!!!!!!   63. Admiral Redbeard Says:
    Give Suh the same deal as last year, but make it a three year, with (realistic) incentives that could bump it to 10+. His play hasn’t declined, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to, so neither should his salary.
  64. MarineBucsFan Says:
    I really hope we get a deal done with Suh!! 8 with incentives is fair and should bring him back. The sooner the better tho
  65. Adrnagy Says:
    Jenkins going to saints …. and who do we have at safety?
  66. JimmyJack Says:
    Adnargy……No matter what our own opinions are the 2020 defense has a lot to proove. And it doesn’t matter who they sign or who they bring in. All’s we can do now is trust they know what to do.
    But I do think it’s extremely fair to expect this defense will, again, be stout against the run. They have already proven that and it’s a heck of a start.
    Another thing we can reasonably expect is they will force turnovers. We ranked high in that catergory. You even saw signs that they were improving in that area saying all the way back to preseason.
    The run stop and generating turnovers are pretty much proven at this point.
    Another area we saw drastic improvement was our ability to make goalline stand. It’s been so long since we have saw that. We honestly may have made more last year then the prior 5 years combined.
    Point is there are a lot of things for this defense to build upon. These are things they provved they are good at and did it all year last year…….Not just a four game stretch.
    Now when you look at what we need to get better at and who we might be counting on to do it you’d have a really hard time saying their no potential…….I’m talking guys like D.White, Dean, Bunting, Barrett ect……….It isn’t just blind hope this time. This is looking at guys that have shown true ability to impact games and waiting to see them put it all together.
    So your right. Unproven. And your right things change every year…….But we got areas on this defense that we are genuinely good at as a foundation……And we got lots of potential behind that………Chances of it changing in our favor this year look high……..And I could argue it already starting changing towards the end of last year. Just like it did in Dungys first season .
  70. 813bucboi Says:
    thats water under the bridge….or shall i say: smitty under mama realist…..lol….
    dirk and smitty wouldnt ruined any player(s) we selected with those picks you claim were offered to the bucs because they couldnt develop players….
    now go google the difference between WIN & WHEN….
    GO BUCS!!!!!
  71. JimmyJack Says:
    I feel like Safety is the perfect position to go into the draft as a big need.
    You might get the perfect guy be avialable for you in round one. Nobody’s trading up above you to grab a safety.
    If the guy you want ain’t there you might have a great backup plan in round two.
    If nothing pans out you suck it up and trade for one. But because of the position you will likely be able to get a player you like in the draft. Teams just don’t reach often at that position.
    After Suh my main priority is getting a RT in free agency. I don’t like having a glaring need at that spot on Draft Day.
    Many .ight scoff at valuing a safety so high…..Just go look at who played that position on Bowles prior defenses(rookie players too) and what their impacts we’re…….Now you tell me we couldn’t use one of those…….You’d have to be touched in the head!!!
    Us sheep have long realized he is nothing more then a crazy on the internet. A total waste of pixels on my cellular phone.
  74. JimmyJack Says:
    Thanks bold. I think there’s a chance we bring Beau back on a cheap backup deal. I’m betting the team would like to if he doesn’t find a role somewhere.
    He was solid coming off the bench for us last year.
  75. ItzOK Says:
    Itz official this is the last ever Gerald McCoy story ever. I’m sick of hearing about the selfish scrub who never did anything besides shoot the gap and make two lucky plays early in every game. The rest of the game he just runs up field and leaves wide open wholes. He never has and never will make a play when you needed one. This guy will never make the hall of fame and not even the ring of honor of the Bucs. Nice guy no hard feelings but stop with the McCoy stories. Nobody gives a F even though his salary may show what Suh’s price will be. The reality is Suh will only agree to what he will agree to. At some point if the number is too low Suh will just retire. I hope Suh decides to come back to the Bucs.
    Going to a d@mn playoff game would be a start.
  79. 1sparkybuc Says:
  80. Rod Munch Says:
    I have always stuck up for McCoy, I think he’s a great guy and he was a fantastic player here. But reading the ESPN article on his move to Dallas I found some really reprehensible information. Gerald McCoy became a vegan? Wow. Why would you do that? You know who wanted the entire world to become a vegas? Adolf Hitler. One of his goals for Germany, and eventually the world, according to his doctor, was to ban smoking and to ban meat consumption.
    To follow in the shoes of Hilter, and pretend it’s a good thing. Wow. No way, sir, no way.
  81. Buczilla Says:
    C’mon Licht we already lost Nassib. Pay this dude and be done with it. We’ll be damn lucky if Brady lasts the season, so our window is open NOW.
