Tribe: No Jameis, No Hope

February 10th, 2020

Washington QB Jacob Eason.

The guys who convinced themselves they invented football are of the mind unless the Bucs draft a quarterback in April who is an instant star, this team will doom itself this season if they wave goodbye to Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

That’s what Anthony Treash of the PFF tribe believes. Over at the tribe’s site, they have a story that tries to figure out where the top quarterbacks in the draft will land.

They believe Washington quarterback Jacob Eason could be a fit in Tampa, but of course, Treash deeply cautions Bucs fans to be careful what you wish for.

JACOB EASON: ROUND 4 PICK 107, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Why they should: The quarterback situation in Tampa Bay is murky. It seems likely that Bruce Arians brings back Jameis Winston for another one-year tryout given his upside, but if that fails, they’ll almost certainly move on and would be left without any hope until the next draft pool. … A quarterback competition between Winston and a rookie might be the best way to approach the 2020 season for the Buccaneers.

What they are getting: Jacob Eason looks the part with his size and arm strength, but there’s still a lot that needs to be answered. … [Eason’s] clean-pocket play is more stable than play under pressure, so while there’s some hope that the Bucs might be getting value at pick 107, he’s still got a ways to go before he’s considered a sure thing.

The thing about Eason (or this Jordan Love from Utah State) is few teams have the quarterback coaches as good as the Bucs: Bucco Bruce Arians to Tom Moore and Clyde Christensen.

So if Eason or Love are any good to begin with, at least Joe trusts the Bucs coaches to get the most out of a rookie.

Then again, if these coaches were such sages, why did Jameis’ picks spike so radically this past year?

Maybe its cuz Jameis is not coachable

  2. miken Says:

this is dumb…. Eason will probably be gone by our 2nd round pick. What next, We take Chase young with our 1st rd. pick?

  3. mark2001 Says:

Whether or not we resign Jameis, we need to draft a QB. Putting all the proverbial eggs in Jameis basket is risky on multiple levels, based upon past and current history. We need a guy we are developing in the wings. And if Jameis does become a franchise QB? We can always trade the young guy for pretty much what we gave to draft him, if we develop him.

If we sign an older vet, again, we need to have a young QB in development to take over the reigns within a couple years. We can’t go from one old FA vet to another.

Bruce…you are the QB guru. Find a young one.

  4. Mort Says:

The last line is the money quote of the whole Jameis debate. And the answer is easy. First year of a high risk offense, with a high risk QB. Next year expect the picks to fall 1/3 just on that alone. Experience in the offense. Now if you can clean up Jameis even a little and get it to 15, you have an MVP candidate if all other production metrics remain the same. I don’t think that’s anywhere near out of the question.

I’m all for drafting Eason in round 4. Not before that.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Other than Bridgewater……(age) we need to draft a QB……Winston or not….need a backup plan going forward.

  6. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ____________

    Because JayMiss can’t be coached.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

Agreed with the “have a back-up plan” crowd. Under no circumstance should the Bucs go in to next season without a solid back-up, REGARDLESS of who’s at QB.

  8. Bobby M. Says:

The smart move regardless of whether we keep Winston or let him go is to draft a QB while we have Arians input. He helped a young Rothlisberger and Luck develop into top tier QBs. Arians knows what to look for….how to analyze their personalities, skills, IQ, etc. It would be foolish to simply do nothing when we know Arians isn’t going to be here for maybe 4 more years….at best.

How many teams passed on Jackson, Mahomes, Rodgers, Carr, Brady, Wilson…the list goes on and on. We don’t have to have the top 5 pick to find a franchise changing QB. We need someone that can properly examine QBs and right now we have that.

  9. BrianBucs Says:

I’m sure that the Bucs are looking at every possible option and scenario.
I’m kind of thinking at this point that keeping Winston is actually their backup or fall back plan, just in case none of their other options or scenarios don’t work out or can’t be pulled off.

  10. Buczilla Says:

These PFF dorks actually make some sense in this article. I don’t see Eason lasting until round 4 thouh.

  11. Pewter power Says:

So dumb this guy is an idiot but because he is writing about a team rarely on the national stage so only we realize it. Jacob Eason in the 4th seriously and with all the free agent quarterbacks yea sure bucs are doomed to what a 7-9 season we just had?

  12. Defense Rules Says:

@Bucsfanman … “Under no circumstance should the Bucs go in to next season without a solid back-up, REGARDLESS of who’s at QB.”

B-I-N-G-O !!!!!!!!!! (the 10 exclamation points were for Realist). Quality competition makes everyone better.

  13. Ed Says:

Let’s take all of the emotion out of this equation. When the Bucs drafted Winston with the number one pick five years ago hope was the correct word as he was expected to carry the franchise for years to come.

Fast forward five years now we have a situation with many skilled players reaching the peaks of their careers and the quarterback who continues to give the ball away.Fast forward five years now we have a situation with many skill players reaching the p Peaks of their careers with a quarterback under center who continues to give the ball away and throw pick sixes.

The clock is ticking and if the Team cannot Get off to a fast start in 2020 with Winston there needs to be a viable back up whether it’s Andy Dalton Joe Flacco whoever the heck it is they cannot go through another season with high turnovers and poor performance in clutch situations

  14. BigHog Says:

I’m here to hand out the race-card to all those who hide behind that “he can’t be coached” bs…maybe the coach and gm need to fix that raggedy O/line and find a running back that can actually play the position effectively!!! Get your free 45 card here!! GO BUCS!! KEEP GRINDING!!

  15. HowMuchIsAnEarOfCornInTampa? Says:

How do you guys know Ryan Griffin is not the answer? I don’t know, but you can’t either. He never has had a chance

Race Card to folks that say Winston can’t be coached? Really?
So only white QB’s are uncoachable?
    You get the Idiot Card

“The thing about Eason (or this Jordan Love from Utah State) is few teams have the quarterback coaches as good as the Bucs: Bucco Bruce Arians to Tom Moore and Clyde Christensen.”

Who says these are better coaches than other teams?

  19. HowMuchIsAnEarOfCornInTampa? Says:

That’s what I get for trying to bring up a legitimate argument. All you people see is color. Make America Great Again, regardless of color

  20. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Big Hog

You are one of our best resident racists.
What’s between or not between JayMiss’s ears has nothing to do with color.

    BTW
My some of my favorite Bucs players are:
    Chris Godwin
    Jordan Whitehead
    Devin White
    Shaq Barrett
    JPP

….. yeah I guess I am racist huh?

  21. Aceofaerospace Says:

Because you can’t fix stupid and you can’t coach stubborn.

  22. martinii Says:

The most confused player on the Buc’s roster must be Ryan Griffin. After 6 years and no Professional starts as back-up to the 30-30 man he must believe he is a professional bench warmer. How would you explain that to your kids?

  23. BigHog Says:

DooshLaRue :: but your fab-five are not the face of the franchise…leader of the pack, just be careful of the way you use your words because I’m here to pull the wool or uncover the bs…cards given frequently!! Happy to do my part!

  24. Mr. Reality Says:

“Murky” is not how I’d describe the QB situation with Winston. More like begins with an “s” and ends with a “y.”

  25. BigHog Says:

BrainBucs :: But only white folks saying he can’t be coached…you don’t have to take the card but know it is available to you!

BrainBucs :: But only white folks saying he can’t be coached…you don’t have to take the card but know it is available to you!

His skin color has nothing to do with it. He can’t be coached because he’s dumber than a pot of frogs in room temperature water on a hot stove.

I’m white, my wife is black, as are my in-laws and a portion of my cousins. I work for a black owned company and am a minority in my office.
My wife and I own a townhouse in a 50 unit community where I am one of less than 10 white people. I’m as integrated and not racist as can be, no one that I personally know that cares about football thinks he can be coached.

  27. BrianBucs Says:

    BigHog

    Sorry, you are wrong again.
Or should I say As Usual?

  28. Sleepy903 Says:

DoooshLaRue – That comment definitely wasn’t the best way to respond. That’s equivalent to saying you have black friends.

I really wish people would stop calling Winston dumb. Overall intelligence has nothing to do with vision/courage. He makes questionable throws due to either feeling like he can squeeze a ball into a tight window which he can (high risk/high reward throw) Or he misses a read, not being on the same page as the WR or the defense did a great job of disguising the coverage.

His high school/college GPA suggest he isn’t dumb. The fact he was a multisport athlete and was eligible to go to Stanford, and would have had it not been so far from home, suggest he isn’t dumb. Every coach he has had has stated that he picks up on the playbook easily and is very cerebral.

Also as we have seen with the last regime maybe it was a lack of development. How many players from the Dirk Error actually developed into anything significant. M.E., Lavonte, Marpet. In one year of BA their were improvements to Winstons deep ball, Touchdown passes and Redzone efficiency. Plus he limited his fumbles the second half of the season. Also players that took the next step and actually showed development CG, Cappa, Perriman, Rojo Davis, SMB, Dean, Vea, Gholston and Shaq. Even Justin Watson and Earl Watford came and showed the ability to play. How many backups would have come in with the ability to contribute playing under Dirk?

  29. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Big Hog = Big Racist

  30. Sleepy903 Says:

You guys do know you dont have to give your black resume to show how racist you arent. Just say that wasnt the intent behind you comment and let it be. Listing out all your black achievements in life wont make something not consider you a racist. We would just question why you have a running tally to present in order to prove you arent.

BigHog – its ok if you feel that way. Its your feelings. Not going to say Ive never questioned some of the comments Ive read but calling it out isnt going to change their feelings or views. Just look past it and interact with the people you chose to and ignore the others. Some dont even know their feelings or comments are derived from racism or prejudice. So youre really just wasting your time going back and forth with some people.

  31. catcard202 Says:

Eason will not make it to pick 45, let alone 107.

  32. BigHog Says:

M Fifer;:: 45 is married to a Russian, is he a racist …sure he is…all I’m asking is that you use your words carefully because if you’re not Racist (like me) then you should care about sounding like one ….Doosh my people have never had a history of hating because I f the color of ones skin!!! PEACE and GOODWILL to all my fellow posters …I’m done…class is over…for today….LUNCH TIME …Chicken Foot Soup!!

Take it easy Big Hog ….. 5 years is a eternity in todays NFL…. THAT IS SET UP FOR PROTECTING THE QB…. JW is enertaining and everybody loves to watch but the fans want to WIN!!!

  34. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Yes the coaching staff that made Blaine gabbert look serviceable and has decades upon decades of combined experience is the reason why Winston failed…………..

  35. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Wow sleepy, you’re very cerebral.

  36. BigHog Says:

Sleepy :: The truth is…I know what you’re saying is correct, I’m just witht the late Congressman Cummings when he says if you see it say something …there are times when things need to be called out!!! I will work on being a little more patient!!

  37. Dapostman Says:

    @BigHog,

Someone should have told Cummings his district is a sh*thole and he should do something about it.

  38. BigHog Says:

Dapostman ::The pipeline of sh*t is running directly from …you guessed it…THE WHITE HOUSE!! Ok supper time more chicken foot soup!!

  39. Lunchbox Says:

    To other posters beside BigRaceCard,
You can try to defend yourself and your opinions if you want, but it won’t matter to guys like BigHog. If you don’t like Jameis, you’re racist. If you don’t like Obama, you’re racist. Doesn’t matter if it’s because you don’t like the idiotic decisions Jameis makes, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t like Obama’s “fundamental transformation” of America to a MUCH MORE divisive country than it was before. It doesn’t matter if you have these reasons, YOU’RE RACIST, because they are black, so you have to support them no matter what. To guys like BigHog, you’re gonna be labeled racist no matter what, so F those guys. And you wanna call me racist for what I just said? Go right ahead. That word is thrown around so much these days, it’s lost a lot of it’s power. Hey BigHog, NEWSFLASH, not everything is about color.

  40. SB Says:

I stopped reading when I saw that they think Eason will last until Round 4. Funniest thing I have read or heard all day.

  41. Big O Says:

“We can win with or without him”
We need to fill other positions on both sides of the ball.

  42. Stanglassman Says:

There are code words for black Qbs and questioning their football IQ and coach ability are right up there. My favorite is ‘athletic’ and the people who say we need a ‘real’ (when they mean White) Qb.
