“Sounds Like Shaq Barrett’s Getting The Franchise Tag”

February 28th, 2020

Bucs GM Shaq Barrett

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport spit out another Buccaneers nugget today, and it’s a big one.

After saying he’s spoken to multiple general managers about Jameis Winston’s knee issues, Rapoport said, “it sounds like Shaq Barrett’s likely getting the franchise tag.”

That will ruin Shaq’s dinner. He doesn’t want to be tagged.

If the Bucs franchise Shaq, about $17 million for a linebacker, then the only “tag” left for Jameis would be the transition tag. That option would free Jameis to test the market but the Bucs would have the right to match the offer. If Jameis played on a transition tag in 2020, his price tag likely would be just under $25 million.

However, if NFL players sign a new labor agreement before March 18, then the Bucs would be limited to using only one tag for 2020.

Very sticky stuff.

Tagging Shaq seems like a wise move, even though Bucco Bruce Arians firmly insisted Shaq is not a one-year wonder when pressed on the subject by Joe this week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Would the Bucs dare to tag Shaq and leave Jameis unprotected, free to walk from Tampa?

Seriously, Jameis won’t get tagged. They want him to see that he has no value as a starter in the market.

    Clever lever…

  3. Check your sheet Says:

Please please please let the ATM sign somewhere else…anywhere else. The Bucs can find a free agent and draft another quarterback and we will survive without the anointed one. Go Bucs!

  4. Robert Says:

and just when I thought they couldn’t get any dumber.

    buc life

    give this man a contract!

  5. Hodad Says:

He’ll get a contract, not the tag. Know why? If you tag him, and he has another great season you’ll really have to open the vault with the new CBA, and the cap will go up. The best thing they can do is pay him now, or really pay him later.

  6. D-Rome Says:

Tagging Shaq is a bad move but we’re talking about Backstabbin’ Jason Licht here so that is no surprise.

If you look at Barrett’s snap count in Denver and extrapolate that out to a full work load (he only played 1/3rd of the snaps in Denver compared to Tampa) he would have averaged 10-12 sacks a year. Sure, 19 sacks goes way beyond what he was expected to perform but it’s not as if he’s going to drop back down to averaging 7 sacks a season. He should continue to be a productive player. Shaq is the real deal and slapping the franchise tag on him to prove it again is a bit insulting to him I would imagine.

  7. Fb Moderated! Says:

Word around the combine being there isn’t a market for him any more than an interim starter. Sounds like Light has a better feel for the jameis market than America’s jobucsfan columnist.

Why guarantee him 25 mill when no one else wants to pay him starter money

  8. Fb Moderated! Says:

They will tag him and offer him a sizable contract. He can take the tag or the good guaranteed money. He will still be a good player, but if we take a shot I want JPP too, or another good lb in the draft for leverage. I think Chaisson loos solid and confident. He would have a good mentor in white.

  9. Fb Moderated! Says:

If he does two years with that production, give him 20 over the 17 they are probably offering

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“However, if NFL players sign a new labor agreement before March 18, then the Bucs would be limited to using only one tag for 2020.”

    I have a question:
If teams apply both tags before the CBA is agreed to, won’t that grandfather those tags in for 2020?

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Threatening to franchise tag Shaq is either a smoke screen or JL really is incompetent. Tag Shaq & you keep him for 1 year at $17 mil, then he could very likely walk. Work a 4-5 year deal with him at the same annual cost & he’s happy, we get to keep him for a long time, and the Bucs end up saving money. Duh.

  12. Fb Moderated! Says:

I love Barrett, but jpp is a true end. Barret will always need a partner. JPP almost doesn’t. 275 doesn’t sound like a lot more than 250, but that added power does help when you aren’t rushing 5.

One reason a writer from Denver said he sat behind the others, was that he was primarily downhill, while the others like Vonn could cover better when dropping into coverage. Not that he wasn’t effective, but more limited than those guys. Also said that bowels defense was a perfect fit for him

  13. Rriddler Says:

They can tag him and still sign him to a long term deal.

    —————————————————
That has no value as starter, that is not a secret, but if they think so, why they are “playing” to bring him back???!!! Just because you can pay him less, doesn’t make him better starter…. if that is their logic, that’s an other stupidity.

    BA = LovieS 2.0

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

The picture says Bucs GM Shaq Barrett. That’s a hell of a promotion for 1 good year.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Shaq doesn’t want to be tagged…..then he can avoid that by signing a multi-year deal…..I’m quite sure one has been offered……the tag is simply a negotiating tool.
It’s too soon for anyone to know what will happen.

As far as Jameis is concerned……his best deal would be with the Bucs….if he gets a deal from them.

I predict there will be a multi-year deal for Shaq and Jameis will get the tag….or nothing.

  17. Bobby M Says:

Glazers will position for a lockout until there’s a new CBA. Tagging Barrett makes sense. Positions them to be really aggressive in finding Winston’s replacement while keeping the defense together.

  18. 941bucsfan Says:

Tag shaq. He gets 4 sacks next year, hit the road. Welcome back jameis $27M

  19. tmaxcon Says:

based on the fact they paid cancer93 well over 100 million and his fraudulent arse average 5.9 sacks a year as a buc not to mention captain blowout was also by far the worst DT in nfl history against the run… scared dexter would have been tougher against the run than cancer93.

the smart thing to do is tag Barret. most likely the bucs will be blowing up the staff at the end of the year and no reason in handcuffing the next regime with a bloated 1 year wonder lb bad contract….

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

no sir the best thing for jameis is to escape this minor league franchise so he can have a legit shot at the post season. BA and his BS will implode this year. glazers trusting this good ole boy duo is going to bite them in the arse BIGTIME…. no way in hell any business allows a proven failure in licht and a coach with a bad track record of building teams to make long term decisions for a failed franchise. I hate bad character lovie smith a passion and lovie would be a better option than the tandem of licht and senile washed up BS artist with a bad heart.

allowing licht and the senile BS artist to call the shots for a desperately horrible franchise would be similar to the courts putting Bernie Madoff in charge of investing the National Social Security fund. but i expect nothing less from this incompetent ownership group of idiots.

  21. WestChap Says:

Only good thing about tagging Shaq is we lose temptation to use it on Jameis. The quoted difference between franchise and transition tags is getting smaller for QB: $27 versus just under $25?

  22. DBS Says:

Sounds like we don’t know any more today then yesterday. More guessing until official word comes from the Bucs on any player.

  23. Adrnagy Says:

Smart move. Why extend the one year wonder ? After all the dline was loaded. Makes completely sense. All the fan who ask to pay shaq or extended a contract To him are dumb.

Prove it again with 10-12 sacks then , then we can talk contract.

  24. Craig Says:

It is a shame that they want to tag Shaq. He has said that he likes it here and was a bright spot in more than one way.

A tag might just piss him off when he could have been offered three years with 15 million a year and incentives.

I know that 191/2 sacks is a once in a lifetime thing, but he would be worth double digits in that column yearly.

  25. Lakelandsteve Says:

Arians wants to win NOW. The only way they let Jameis go is if they get Brady or Rivers. Do you really think Brady wants to play in the Tampa Sauna with a team that hasn’t sniffed the playoffs in ten years? So they will sign Jameis to some kind of deal and he will be the starting QB next year. Like it or not, absent one of the top free agent QB’s coming here, Jameis is the best chance for the Bucs to make the playoffs. As for Shaq Barrett hopefully they sign him to a long term deal from the get go and don’t franchise him. If they do he’s likely one and done unless they franchise him the following year. Also they need to sign both JPP and Suh if they want to keep an up and coming possibly top ten defense in tact.

  26. Smashsquatch Says:

Bucs will use franchise tag on Shaq, which is the right move. If the new CBA is agreed upon all teams will be limited to one tag. JW is going to become a free agent unless the Bucs sign him before FA; although that’s not happening since they value other potential options higher than JW at his current price tag. He’s forcing the Bucs hand by not accepting a short term deal and rather gambling on himself in FA. He’s all but gone unless his market cools on JW and the Bucs strike out on door #2, in which case they may be each other’s best option.

  27. martinii Says:

Tag Barrett, try to sign or negotiate equitable deals with other top FA’s, and once you have salvaged all you want from 2019 then go back to Shaq and work on multi year deal. Remember the Franchise Tag in Florida (due to taxes) is worth more than other states.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    We’ll see.

  29. Adrnagy Says:

Rumor is shaq price is 20m a yr. 5 yrs. 60m guarantee.

Now with that asking price. I would be saying I like Tampa. I want to be here forever.

  30. NPRSageBoy. Says:

No tag. He’ll get offers in the $8-9 M range as a backup on a one year prove it deal.

Seems about right; fitting almost as Mr. Reckless, Americas Turnover Machine fades into history.

    Peace, out

  31. Buczilla Says:

I hope that this is bs. If Shaq gets over 10 sacks next year his per year average asking price is going to be a hell of a lot more than it is now. I highly doubt that any team will be willing to pay Jameis more than us, but Mike Glennon is a good example of how dumb teams can be. The transition tag is a good option to use on Jameis.

  32. Pa Privateer Says:

    Rumor doesn’t mean it’s true.

I’ll believe everything when I see it.

  33. catcard202 Says:

It’s a smart move if the Owners are sure that the CBA is a No Go w/ the Players & there will be 2 tags available to use in 2020…(Before a possible work stoppage)

It’s still more money that Shaq has ever made & a serious step toward long-term financial stability for his family….(& if he balls out in 2020 & new CBA gets worked out…$$ bills ya as FA again in 2021!)

  34. Billy_45 Says:

If you tag a guy you’re screaming you’re not sure, or you are going after a replacement.
    Better draft Chaisson then.

They will really be paying $20 Mill if he goes off unless they believe they can just coach the hell out of everyone.

Sounds like a business decision to free up as much money as possible to go after Brady.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Course..Don’t matter what we think. But I think it would be a huge mistake to slap that franchise tag on shaq. Look. he is the sack leader and I don’t see him droppin off beyond 12 sacks a year. PAY THE MAN! And place him under contract a few.. I laugh at many of you Buc fans. Each time we won this year? It was because of stellar Defense. Its how we won our 1st ring. Yet..you refuse to aceept it. You want a QB who throws beautiful spirals whistling in the GD air. For us, A great Defense is the key. Arians knows it.

  36. BucEmUp Says:

I don’t like it….give him a contract then again we don’t know what type of money he is demanding. It takes two to tango!

  37. T REX Says:

tmax: You’re not a bucs fan. You’re Winston knob gobbler. Get lost. We don’t need losers like you around. Garbage. Take out the trash…fans and Winston….curb side. LOSERS!

  38. jpete Says:

now if the qb is good … then you would franchise him

  39. Fb Moderated! Says:

The problem is that the cap is expected to increase 6% without a new cab and tv deal, and like 13% with one. So Shaq.s agent is probably saying pay me on the new deal, and they are wanting to wait till it’s done to not over allocate resources should there be a holdout and lesser tv deal

  40. SteveK Says:

Resign Shaq, JPP, Suh and Nassib.

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    T rex

I just state the facts pal. Im not the one with the worst
winning percentage in nfl history the team we love is… your intense hatred and jealousy of another man is hilarious yet so very sad…. bucs sucked long before jameis and will suck long after history proves this. There is zero leadership at one buc circus headquarters… now see if mommy will give you an extra juice box for the night.

  42. Dro williamson Says:

    Tmaxcon,

Licht is nothing more then a “YES MAN” to the glazers. That’s all they want, there’s no reason for them to care anymore with the league being shared revenue. Dan Snyder is a perfect comp to these ass owners we have. BA is the only hope of anything positive happening with this team.

  43. SteveK Says:

    Tmaxcon,

Can’t disagree that ownership needs to step up better in some way, when it’s been 12 years since playoffs, and some good football between 99-02. We need more and to do better.

What do you think of GMC wearing Bucs gear to the gym?

  44. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    What is the DAMN problem??
    Sign him up LONG TERM.

I want the piece of mind of knowing that best pass rusher we have ever had since Warren Sapp is going to be in a BUCS uniform for AWHILE.

    What is the DAMN problem??
