Jason Licht: “We Want All Of Them;” Suh Wants To Stay A Buccaneer

February 25th, 2020

Jason Licht talks D-line

The Buccaneers general manager put his foot down today at the NFL Scouting Combine about his defensive line.

Joe asked the GM about what his process will be like when approaching re-signing his four big free agent defensive linemen/pass rushers.

If you think about it, Licht has a very tough task ahead in making sure he’s ready on all fronts for a variety of outcomes when it comes to the futures of Carl Nassib, Jason Pierre-Paul, Ndamukong Suh and Shaq Barrett.

Licht wouldn’t offer specifics, but he was clear on one thing.

“We like all of them,” Licht said.”And I don’t want to tell you who the priority is because there really isn’t. The priority is getting them all back. So we’ve been in contact with all of them and continue to do that this week.”

Joe asked Licht specifically about Suh’s desire to play his 11th NFL season in Tampa in 2020. Licht said Suh wants to return to Tampa Bay.

The Bucs have quite a puzzle to piece together when it comes to those four guys and the future of their pass rush.

Joe asked Licht if what happens on the D-line in free agency will drive the Bucs’ draft decisions. The answer was, “Yes.”

  1. Bird Says:

Defense has been so bad for so long until the end of last year
A lot of good young talent on team
    Need to keep D-line
Add a legit safety and look out

A lot of talk today about defense
    Offense not so much?
Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm?

  2. Sarasota Garey Says:

Arians said they should be able to get most of them back, I think Nassib will be the odd man out, he seems to be the less talented one of the group also, good riddance to Beau Allen, he played well below what his contract was worth. Thats where I would like to see a Kinlaw come in, and be groomed.

  3. Tom S. Says:

If you’re looking at an ideal scenario for the Bucs on a cap basis you would let Suh and his 10 million salary go and get Kinlaw in the 1st round (if he falls that far).

That frees up money to either go after a ready-made RT like Jack Conklin or others and allows the team to mediate the overall cost of the d-line without having 3 of 4 line/rushers all getting paid 10+ million a year.

  4. Adrnagy Says:

Nassib will be the first one to sign. Captain. Todd Bowles fav.

You know just because you say the same thing on several articles doesn’t mean it comes true. We don’t live in a world of magic where you can will something into reality.

  9. Sarasota Garey Says:

Your not guaranteed to get Kinlaw though, what if we let Suh go, and Kinlaw and Derrick Brown are already off of the board, I think you have to keep Suh, he only made 8 million I think this past year/

  10. Jerry Jones Says:

Nassib will be the first to sign, lol! I can make predictions too, there’s a 50/50 chance it could rain tomorrow.

  11. BucsFIRE Says:

^^ There is a 50/50 chance that you are a dummy.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

The best news I’ve heard all day is that Suh wants to remain a Buccaneer. I was really concerned that he’d look to retire after last year. He’s well worth $10 mil a year for 2 years IMO.

Also good to hear JL say that thee really is no priority; that they want them all back. And in my mind that includes Carl Nassib. He’s only 27 & has been quite consistent for us these past 2 years. No reason to expect that he won’t get even better in his 3rd year here & beyond. I wouldn’t hesitate to offer him $28 mil over 4 years.

And Sarasota, I agree with you about ‘grooming’ another DLineman. Kinlaw would be real nice to have, but I have a hunch he’ll be gone by when we pick at #14. In any event, there’s some excellent DLine talent this year, and we should be able to find someone to groom in Rnd 3 if necessary (my hunch is still that the Bucs will go OLineman then RB in Rnds 1-2).

  13. firethecannons Says:

I like it–make it happen Licht!

  14. Sarasota Garey Says:

If Kinlaw is on the board when the Bucs pick and he is the second best DT, and the 4th or 5th best OT is on the board which one do you take? I would say the best available player, which would be Kinlaw. I would think that would be the wise decision.

  15. Day1BucsFan Says:

    Bird,

I am glad they are talking defense. Where did the Joe’s idiotic Weapons for
    Winston get us?

  16. Bird Says:

    Bucsfire

There is a 100 % chance you went to FSU

  17. Will Says:

Great to hear Suh wants to come back. I think some fans and analyst are looking more at stats and aren’t seeing what his attitude, work ethic and leadership brings to this team. Much better Vea learn from him instead of McCoy imo. Let Beau Allen go if it comes down to money between him or Nassib. This defense could be deadly in year 2 with the core returning.

Wish we could hear the questions in the interviews though.

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

If Suh is resigned I would still draft Kinlaw if he is available.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Does anyone know how much the cap will go up if the CBA is agreed upon soon?

  20. Adrnagy Says:

I’m guessing it’s rubbing the wrong way , Jameis in a bucs uniform next year has you paranoid matthew fifer

  21. catcard202 Says:

Kinlaw has some medical red flags & inconsistency in his tape to consider – but flashes rare skill-set for a DT…So, depending on medicals & who that #4/5 OT that would be on the board…Would make that a difficult choice – w/o knowing who else is on the board.

Wills / Wirfs / Thomas / Becton are the clear top4 OT in this draft…Brown / Kinlaw top15 pick IDL…Would take any one of them @ #14 & have no issues w/ the decision.

However, If a top4 QB is setting there @ #14… (Burrow / Tua / Herbert / Love)…You almost have to take one there & roll dice that a RT & IDL will be available in the 2nd/3rd.

Who you got, if Becton, Kinlaw & either Herbert/Love are available??? In my thought process…It’s QB / OT / DL in order of preference & priority.

WTS, I expect Kinlaw will be in JAX @ #9 / Becton gone no later #10 & ZERO top4 QB’s getting past IND’s #13 pick..(CIN/MIA/LAC/CAR/IND – maybe LVR all looking hard at new QB’s)…. Which is the worst of all worlds scenarios in my mind.

If that happens, would put the FO in position of reaching for a lesser rated NEED or taking a Best Available @ non-need position. (QB: Eason / Fromm – OT: Jackson / Jones – DT: Madubuike/Blaylock/R.Davis are all reaches at #14…But would put a top S/IOL or #2 LB/CB-#3Edge/WR in square line of sight, which doesn’t best fill glaring weaknesses on the current roster.)

  22. Tom S. Says:

The problem is dummy Jason Licht has put the Bucs in a situation where he either uses the mind control that he clearly has over the Glazer Babies and gets agents to take significantly below market value contracts for the players they represent or he loses a lineman or three and deals with a rookie or project at RT. There isn’t enough cap room to go around for everyone.

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Sign all four, sign a free agent safety, defensive back and offensive tackle. Do whatever at QB sign JW at a lower price than 27 mil or find someone to throw the ball for 20-25 mil. Still draft Kinlaw if available.

  24. WhatTheBuc Says:

Defense, if you can get Nassib to sign that contract, I think we do it. It will be a bargain in 4 years.

Tom, you can’t let Suh go with hopes to draft Kinlaw because free agents sign before the draft. If Kinlaw isn’t there, you have to reach for next best DT. This is especially true because Allen is also a free agent.

  25. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Who you got, if Becton, Kinlaw & either Herbert/Love are available??? In my thought process…It’s QB / OT / DL in order of preference & priority.

I’d take Becton without blinking. Top 4 QB doesn’t mean squat if there’s only two good ones. Maybe even one.

  26. WestChap Says:

Suh and JPP are critical to culture until their influence on LVD, White and Vea is fully imprinted.

  27. catcard202 Says:

Isaiah Wilson or Lucas Niang in the 2nd / Matt Pearl in the 3rd fills the RT hole, where a 2nd rd QB doesn’t give you the 5th yr option @ the more premium position.

  28. Defense Rules Says:

Catcard202 … Solid analysis. I also think that free agency might dictate a change in our priorities in regards to our OLine especially. We simply can’t go into the season with the right side of our OLine being a question-mark. I can think of several ways we could fix it in both FA & the draft, but from a $$$ perspective I tend to think the draft is the better way to go (our OLine is too expensive as it is).

Still, it’s anybody’s guess who’ll be available when we pick at #14. Going strictly BPA always SOUNDS nice, UNLESS we have a glaring hole at one particular starting position. At some point, NEED has to come into play & maybe even take priority. (Example: selecting a DT & ‘grooming him’ to ultimately take Suh’s spot on the DLine by giving him say 180 snaps like Beau Allen got last year sounds nice, but drafting a starting RT to give us over 1,000 snaps like Demar Dotson gave us last year MIGHT be a lot more critical to the ultimate success of our team this year & in future years).

  29. Bucnjim Says:

West chap, I agree but I’ll call it leadership! Re sign these guys who have displayed both leadership and actual pride in this organization. These players are trying to turn things around just like Sapp, Brooks, Lynch & Barber did with Nickerson’s leadership.

  30. Jean Lafitte Says:

I will make this prediction. Suh will end his career after next season as a Buc.

For him this season coming up, it’s Super Bowl or bust.

Hopefully that defense can get them there even if they have to compensate for Winston blunders.

  31. Craig Says:

Sign them all and use the draft for other holes. Holes like safety, RT, QB,RB, O-line depth

  32. Pete Mitchell Says:

The industry I work in holds people accountable.

The fact that this dude has a job after all this losing is a freaking joke.

You can’t honestly believe that Shaq Barrett and Carl Nassib are equal priorities.

This guy isn’t ruining our franchise. Can’t wait for someone competent.

  35. MadMax Says:

Thats right! Suh, stick around big man! Suh, Shaq, now we need a nod from JPP….im sure he wants to stay too! Man, this is gonna be a great offseason, especially if we find a way to afford Brady!
