Two Bucs Honored
January 4th, 2020Back in, say, May, when underwear football was in full swing, if Joe would have asked what two Bucs might make a Pro Bowl team, there would have been good guesses.
Mike Evans, Jason Pierre-Paul, Lavonte David, Cam Brate or O.J. Howard or maybe an outside shot of Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston getting there.
But two guys who had never been full-time starters, one who was brand new to the Bucs? Readers would have told Joe to go get drug tested.
But that’s just what happened (no, Joe hasn’t been drug-tested). Wide receiver Chris Godwin and outside linebacker Shaq Barrett were named to the NFL’s 2019 All-Pro team. Both were selected to the second team.
Yeah, Shaq, who finished with 19.5 sacks, both setting a new Bucs’ franchise record and leading the NFL in sacks, arguably should be been first team.
Godwin had a rougher road to travel. There are quality receivers all over the place. Godwin is only the second Bucs receiver to make the AP All-Pro team. He had career highs this season in this season in receptions (86) and yards (1,333) for a 15.5 yards-per-catch average.
Still, for two guys who were not full-time starters until this year, these are tremendous accomplishments.
Kudos to both men.

I would like to have seen Godwin’s numbers had he played the last two games. Possibly 100 catches and 1500 yards.
January 4th, 2020 at 12:33 am
I’m glad to see our Bucs get a little national recognition but it really shows how shafted we get. First of all Sack Barrett is the first sack leader to not be first team since 2010 also Hopkins made first team all pro while Godwin got second team and Godwin had him beat in every statistical category.

Godwin is the MAN……I love ME13…..but Godwin is THE MAN!
January 4th, 2020 at 1:27 am
Godwin earned his contract. Beast!
I wonder about results for Godwin or ME13, with different QB. ???
Real question….
January 4th, 2020 at 1:36 am
NET–Rivers, Dalton or Brady as QB…..What success for Godwin/ME13?
January 4th, 2020 at 2:46 am
In an off season filled with contract needs, they’d be smart to wait on giving Godwin a contract until they have to.
He had a great year, yes, but why give him $20 million per year if they don’t need to yet? And yes, that’s what he may end up getting.

Agree Bonzai. Bucs are in no position from a salary Cap perspective to be paying TWO receivers BIG money like ME13 & Godwin will require. Perriman will command a lot more this year also.
I remember one of the announcers during our last game stating that the Bucs were the ONLY team to have THREE OLinemen making $10 mil & over ($35.5 mil total to be exact). Add in ME13 making over $18 mil in 2020, 2 TEs making a total of $10 mil, a QB needing $27 mil just to franchise tag in 2020, THEN talk about paying Godwin $20 mil & Perriman say $6 mil (at least) and voila, you’ve got a $107 mil total for 2020 for JUST 9 players. Then add in the OTHER 15-16 players you’d still need to pay to make up your OFFENSE and “Houston, we have a problem’.
Bucs will have almost $210 mil salary Cap available for 2020. Figure that a strong DEFENSE will cost us $85-$90 mil. S/Ts comes in at $4 mil. Allow $10 mil for ‘contingencies’ (injury replacements during the year, etc) and that leaves about $105-$110 mil for the offense (which is even MORE than our highest cost offense cost this year). If our Top-9 players on OFFENSE require that much all by themselves ($107 mil), it doesn’t take a mathematical genius to figure out that ‘there ain’t no way’.
January 4th, 2020 at 5:06 am
My bad Bonzai. On doing something else re-added those numbers and I forgot to add in the 2 TEs making $10 mil. Actual figure for just those NINE offensive players I mentioned would be $117 mil, not $107 mil. Need more coffee obviously.
Of course, since we can’t really afford to spend $117 mil for the entire 25-26 man offense in 2020, that number for just 9 players is even more absurd. Such is life.

Thanks for doing that dirty work DR. Somebody has to do it, and it ain’t gonna be me!

Slugglife … Hey, it keeps my mind sharp (well, as sharp as a dull mind can be). It fascinates me that so many will take positions pro-and-con on various issues without analyzing ‘things’ all the way through.
I’ve read so many who say ‘Pay Jameis his $30 mil, no problem’. And of course he has to have a decent OLine (‘Pay them too’). And oh ya, good receivers, we need ME13 & Godwin & Perriman & whoever; ‘Pay them the big bucks too’. And while you’re at it, throw in a strong running game; Jameis needs a strong running game; ‘Pay them too’. Oh and let’s not forget that he NEEDS a strong defense; gotta have a strong defense; ‘Pay them the big bucks also’.
No ‘decision’ can be taken in isolation (that’s how you end up being the only NFL team with THREE OLinemen making over $10 mil each). I’m a big advocate for BALANCE. One of the aspects of BALANCE is salary Cap balance. In recent years Bucs’ management has favored the OFFENSE way too much, to the detriment of our DEFENSE (and yes, S/Ts too). And the RESULT has been painfully obvious: losing season after losing season.
We’ve got a CHANCE in 2020 to re-establish some semblance of BALANCE. Personally I favor allocating $85 mil to our DEFENSE (maybe even up to $90 mil), and up to $110 mil to our OFFENSE, with another $4-$5 mil going to S/Ts. That’d leave us a little (about $10 mil) for ‘contingencies’ like adding a starter-capable player if one of our starters goes down?). Todd Bowles could build a quality defense for $85-$90 mil, and BA/BL should be able to build a quality offense with their $110 mil. S/Ts is a ‘given’ at $4 mil (already under contract). Can’t wait to see what they REALLY do however.

100% correct Joe regarding the honor. Pro-bowl is more of a beauty contest among fans, the media, and more. Frankly, it is more of a media event, and means very little.
All Pro is the true honor…the best of the best…those really in the know selecting among their own… those that really know the craft. To be named among them isn’t a trip to Hawaii and another time on TV…it is, as I said, a real accomplishment…a real honor.

To balance the offense, you would have start with each player and decide their
value. IMO, Godwin is the future of the team and we must keep him. AS for Cam he doesn’t seem to be the same player he was. OJ has not played up to expectations. When ASJ was in Koetter’s doghouse he was a blocking tight end
for most of the preseason. I wonder if this kind of tough love might be good for OJ.
And then their’s Jameis who had another inconsistent season marred by turnovers and pick sixes. If the Bucs decide to keep him it should be under the transition tag, IMO. I heard Pat Kerwin on the radio a couple of days ago, He was of the opinion that no team would offer Jameis starter money based on last years results. Should be interesting to say the least.

Joe I’m just sick about Lavonte just sick How about this for bs TJ Watt gets 11 votes for 2nd team all pro for linebacker and Lavonte David gets 10 , talk about some bs big market bs I don’t think I saw TJ Watt drop back into coverage once this year pro bowl and all pro doesn’t mean a thing to me anymore

Johnny
LVD did make all pro all decade team which recognizes for years of great play.
January 4th, 2020 at 8:22 am
previous post for Sammy, sorry.
January 4th, 2020 at 8:42 am
Wow, our two great receivers make the pro bowl, but the guy who threw to them for over 5000 yds, and 2nd in TD passes didn’t why? Oh yeah, he lead the league in inceptions, and pick sixes too. All the yards, and TD’s did he even get mentioned for the pro bowl Joe? That should tell everyone he isn’t worth keeping.

Bob, I hear you on that but it just really grinds my gears the lack of acknowledgement towards a man that has it all on the tape leaves it on the field and always comes back after losing seasons 4 head coaches and still kicks a$$ !!

Defense Rules
________
Your numbers couldn’t be further off. Godwin isn’t getting $20, it will be more like $15. Our TEs make $7 and maybe $2 for Howard. They are both locked down for two more years at that price. Perriman making $6? We signed him for $5…. try $12 or so. Humphries left us at $8 as a proven #2… Perriman is going to want #1 cash and he thinks he earned it. Somebody will pay it.
The defense is cheap. Outside of the DL and Lavonte, they are all bargain basement rookie deals for the next 3-4 seasons. JPP and Barrett need to be signed. The two of them together might make upwards of $30. Nassib might come back for around $8 and be a solid signing. Suh would want $10 to apprise the role he had last season. Technically, we’re looking to spend an additional $30 mil if we re-sign all three or just shy of $50 mil against next season’s cap. The rest of the D is cheap.

Think of the 1998 Vikings
Randall Cunningham (more mature) 3000+ passing yards 34 tds 10ints
Randy Moss 1300 receiving yards
Chris Carter 1100 receiving yards
Jake Reed 400+ receiving yards
Andrew Glover (TE) 500+ yards
The difference is right here
Robert Smith 1100 rushing yards
Leroy Hoard 500 rushing yards
This is what this offense should look like
Randall only ran for a little over a 100 yards that year
But they lost the NFC championship (missed FG)

As you already know I agree with sluglife and appreciate those stats.
I’m curious how you calculate ST salaries and depth salaries and what is an appropriate share?
Generally speaking with perhaps one or two exceptions most of the ST guys are playing to make the starting lineup at another position and ST’s just provide a way to stay on the team. Again I concede there may be a few guys who are earning their keep PRIMARILY on ST’s with depth as an afterthought.
Like you I appreciate balance. How do you balance the $$$ that are essential to simply maintain decent depth. I fear after we spend all this money our second string guys are going to be underpaid and therefore weaker players.
January 4th, 2020 at 12:11 pm
You could argue not first team if the team had been bad against the run, but they were #1 in the league! What else does Shaq have to do??!?!?
January 4th, 2020 at 1:59 pm
Looks like Lavonte David got hosed once again… he has better/comparable stats to Kuechly
January 4th, 2020 at 3:53 pm
I’m happy that two of our guys made it in, but whomever voted for T. J. Watt over Shaq needs to lose their credentials. Gosh damn travesty. Yet another example of the moronic Northern media getting their guys in. Sad and pitiful. Lol, I am pi$$Ed.

Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are LOSERS!
Evans has even been here longer than Jaymiss WINTston and has never even made the playoffs.
Their stats are meaningless as stats are for losers.
Trade Mike Evans and a 2nd round pick to the Patriots for Julian Edelman because he’s a winner!
Trade Chris God(doesn’t)win and a 1st round pick to the Eagles for Nelson Aghlor because he’s a winner!
We need to get rid of all the LOSERS on this team and trade them for WINNERS!
People are so dumb, they think stats matter and being a good player matters, those things don’t matter, only wins do, so trade all the LOSERS like Evans, Godwin, Vea, Devin White, Jameis, Marpet, etc., and get winners like Aghlor, Edelman, Joe Flacco and others so we can WIN games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 5th, 2020 at 1:39 pm
I wonder why the Bucs receivers had so many hamstring injuries. Has to be the strength and conditioning or too much work. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Jameis made Perriman look like a Star, imagine what the Bucs can do with a healthy set of receivers all year.
January 9th, 2020 at 12:30 pm
JW . . . what is the DS part for? Still, all your talk of WINNERS gets me super excited.
