Bucs archrival Saints head coach Sean Payton dropped revealing info today on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio.
NFL fans get to see just a slice of the NextGen Stats compiled by the NFL via sensors in equipment and on the field. It’s real data, and eventually the NFL will share it all with fans. But for now, fans only get snippets while teams get endless databases filled with raw numbers.
Payton talked today on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio about how that kind of tracking was in place at the Senior Bowl and its changing scouting.
But what intrigued Joe most was Payton saying that a characteristic of Sunday’s Super Bowl teams should open everyone’s eyes. “Tight end, running back, receiver, we’re seeing the two fastest teams in the league [in the Super Bowl], which is interesting,” Payton proclaimed.
Damn, that is interesting. Chiefs observers aren’t surprised; they’re a virtual track team. But the 49ers? Joe wouldn’t have thought of them as speedsters at those positions. Yet there they are.
Kudos to Niners GM and Bucs legend John Lynch. It’s no coincidence that Lynch has the fastest skill position players in the NFL, and he managed to build a ferocious defense.
Joe would love to know where the Bucs rank by comparison. Remember, it’s the real, in-game football speed of the players, not their college 40-yard dash times.
Joe suspects the Bucs would fare rather well, but the running backs are rather plodding and the tight ends don’t play like speedsters.

O J can run as fast as a gazelle if he wanted to and the Bucs still don’t have a tight end offense. They are not the Chiefs’ or 49ers’ offense.

I find it very telling and it’s exciting to know BA’s 1st draft followed that model exactly, with White, SMB, and Dean as some of the fastest in the league at their respective positions.
Not to mention Miller!!
If he follows that model this year, gear up for Grant Delpit at Safety at 14. His 4.34 40 time looks blazing fast on the field.

Excellent point Joe about ‘in-game football speed’ versus the Combine’s 40-yard dash times. One thing to run fast in a straight line in shorts, but quite another to rocket with a full uniform on while dodging opponents intent on ripping your head off.

That picture and caption say it all Joe. That’s exactly why I am rooting for the Niners to win. This is my second Super Bowl now as a REALLY die hard fan of the Buccaneers. This TEAM is never going to another Super Bowl now I bet you. The Glazers and Licht are too damn dumb.

When were the Buccaneers sold now because I don’t think it was 1993 but I am not sure. That is the LAST year I may have bought them too actually. Lynch was Drafted that year pretty sure. Anything happens after that I should know about it. Because I think Culverhouse owned them.
