Price Dropping

January 24th, 2020

Affordable.

The Bucs are expected to use quite a bit of their salary cap room this offseason by signing four critical free agents.

So Joe finds it heartwarming that a talented free agent running back seems to be motivated to allow the Bucs to afford him.

Browns running back Kareem Hunt, who the Bucs heavy-panted over in the lead up to the 2017 draft, just saw his price tag drop as he was pulled over by Ohio cops this week for speeding. While searching his car, the cops confiscated traces of weed, per the Associated Press.

While the cops did not charge Hunt with drug possession, this will likely raise the eyebrows of the NFL given Hunt’s less than saintly image. He was cut by the Chiefs last season after he lied about being involved in an altercation with a girl (that was caught on video).

The NFL suspended Hunt eight games to start this season.

Joe was begging the Bucs to sign Hunt last year. He is as dangerous with his hands catching the ball as he is running the ball. But nah, the Bucs were good. And they continued to have one of the worst running attacks in the NFL.

Now some of Joe’s readers will likely holler that Hunt is looking at another potential suspension with this latest incident. He may be.

Think about it: The way Peyton Barber ran the ball last year, it was as if he was suspended too.

Sign him last year so he could be suspended 8 games. That would have worked out just dandy. And his next suspension?

  2. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

He’s a POS…PLEASE do NOT encourage the Bucs to bring in another POS.

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

Chiefs cut him and they go to SB- c’mon Joe, you want another ASJ?

  4. SammyRebel Says:

Joe I’ve been one of the consistent readers to lobby for the Bucs to sign Hunt, we might as well, even though this guy is going down the Josh Gordon path, I’m sure Arians & co. Can make amends with a talent who likes to visit Jamaica every once in a while 🙂

  5. Joe Says:

Would have worked out great! The way the defense played after Thanksgiving imagine if the Bucs had a fresh, talented running back? May have been a wild card team.

    Yeah, Joe wrote that.

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

We have a QB 1 incident from being banned already.

  8. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

I think next year in the new player’s union collective bargaining agreement marijuana will be one of the bargaining chips on the table.

The league wants more games that count and less pre-season and the players want more money and the freedom to medicate their pain naturally.

I think both sides would like to exempt one player, likey the QB, from the salary cap.

I actually thought weed was legal in Ohio.

  9. catcard202 Says:

Joe, I’m with you on Hunt.

Sometimes a 2nd chance or change of scenery works out…Sometimes not, but when it’s small coin at a need position…It’s worth the risk!

Not worried about the OH incident at all…Young Black men driving nice cars get targeted as drug dealers all the time in OH…Not that it’s right, It isn’t…Just a fact of life up here.

The Browns/NFL will piss test Hunt & if he’s clean – all will be forgiven.
But I do wonder if Hunts RFA tender will be original round or right of 1st refusal???

Hard to see the FO giving up a 3rd rd pick to roll the dice on Hunt @ $2M/yr, if it’s a Original Rd Tender…Not after they passed on him when he was easy money & free to sign without any strings attached!

But could see the Bucs sign him to an offer sheet & see if the Browns match it, if it’s a 1st Refusal tender…Are the Brownies going to pony up & pay Hunt more than Chubb to keep him as Chubb’s BU??? Doubtful….So, let’s hope the Brown go soft & don’t make an original round tender.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    i agree joe…

draft a RB and sign hunt…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. BucInCLE Says:

Clevelander here. Kareem is from Cleveland and his incident that got him suspended happened in a hotel downtown while he was still with KC. From the things I’ve heard, he’s been pretty low key since the Browns signed him. He’s a stud.

The place he was stopped is a notorious speed trap and he was probably driving responsibly. Would love to see Hunt in a Bucs uniform.

  12. Bradinator Says:

I loved Hunt coming out of college. Turns out he fell on draft boards due to character concerns. haven’t we already played this game with Jeremy Stevens? It didn’t work out then and won’t work out this time either. Running backs are cheap in the draft. There are better guys than Peyton barber and we know Jones is on the rise. RB is not really anywhere near the top of the list for us. There is a reason why the price is dropping. The best “ability” is “availability” and his will likely be limited by suspensions. He obviously has other priorities than football.

  13. Swampbuc Says:

Barber was good in the red zone. The coaches know what they have. It’s likely scheme and play calling combined with confidence loss. By all means, upgrade the position talent but that doesn’t mean offloading Barber, maybe he becomes #3

  14. tmaxcon Says:

most of you losers give jpp a free pass for all the games he misses for bad choices…. no double standards ladies!!!! Hunt would be great for the Bay… Tampa fans have no right judging anyone’s character that’s laughable. When you are the worst franchise in the nfl you can’t be picky especially over meaningless character garbage. does he have talent YES can he help you WIN YES is he better than what you have YES…. it’s a no brain’er….. you can’t spout off about wanting jpp back given his history yet blast this fine young man who has made a mistake or two.

  15. Pewter power Says:

I agree with joe on this go ahead and get hunt, I heard he wanted to be drafted here from somewhere. Maybe this locker room brotherhood going on could be a benefit to him not everyone looking for someone to add to it. I dont see another rookie learning the ropes of pass pro again because its brutal, give me hint a veteran all day.

This post was for the world congratulating the Seahawks for signing suspension waiting to happen in josh Gordon and that was much easier to predict than hunt

  16. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Bradinator, Jeremy Stevens was in a different stratosphere. He dragged a girl down a staircase by her hair. — If ever given an opportunity, I would have beaten the living crap out of him, myself.

  17. Joe Says:

The coaches know wh atthey have.

    Could have fooled Joe.

  18. Jean Lafitte Says:

He was cut by the Chiefs last season after he lied about being involved in an altercation with a girl (that was caught on video).

He lied about beating the sh|t out of her

No thanks …no room in my world for women beaters

  19. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I agree with most of you guys. Kareem actually strikes me as a pretty good kid, who made a mistake. I would love to see him here.

  20. Joe in Michigan Says:

Well, we didn’t sign him last year when we had the chance. Since the same guys are making the decisions for the Bucs, I expect the same result.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    Jean Lafitte

you must be a good christian. i bet you give free passes to dog fighters like that loser dungy the clown….

2nd chances matter. if they took jobs away from everyone charged with a crime there would be hardly anyone left in the workforce. what players do off filed should have no bearing on their ability to earn a living. if they commit a crime and miss a game because of incarnation then they lose millions. If they go to jail long term they lose everything. let the criminal justice system handle discipline. the NFL needs to work on fixing all the penalty flags and replays that are destroying the game. baseball lost it’s number 1 ranking to nfl because of length of games and labor issues. NFL is making the same mistakes.

Players are sports entertainers not role models and should not be held to any higher standard than a convenience store employee.. unless you are prepared to pay unemployment for everyone charged with a crime or falesy accused you might want to back-off the gestapo like standards you have for players you are jealous of.

  22. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ It’s a much different situation this year. Last year, we did not have a pot to pi$$ in, salary cap wise.

I feel sorry for Hunt…but look at the video again…he comes out of his hotel room he didn’t have to do that…she mouths off and he pushes her….but it gets far worse…his bodyguards restrain him and then slam the girl from behind…she drops to the floor stunned and in pain and Hunt come out to KICK HER WHILE SHE IS DOWN!!!

    https://globalnews.ca/video/4717620/video-purportedly-shows-nfls-kareem-hunt-allegedly-shoving-kicking-woman

And so why would I feel sorry for Kareem? Because he went through the same things as ME!!!

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/chiefs/2018/12/14/ex-chiefs-star-kareem-hunt-family-criminal-history/2289525002/

Hunt’s father, also named Kareem Hunt, has been arrested at least 35 times in northeast Ohio and multiple times on charges of domestic violence, according to records obtained by USA TODAY. Most of the felony convictions were for drug-related offenses. He was sentenced to a combined nine years in prison on nine felony convictions, but it’s unclear how much time he spent in jail for dozens of misdemeanor charges.

Kareem has every reason to kick a 19 year old when she’s down on the ground in pain. I’ve seen my own father do the same thing. If you investigate what happens to children like me and Kareem..it’s one of two extremes…either you also become a woman beater or you become NUTS when you see a man pounding on a woman.

In all honesty I’m kind of surprised that I’m still alive. If I had been in that hotel hall I would have intervened and had my butt kicked. I’ve always thought I’m going to see something like that here in Florida in the Wal Mart parking lot…intervene..I have NO control or sanity when I see this stuff…the other guy “stands his ground” and blows me away.

You guys can have him. I absolutely refuse to cheer for him. I hope he gets help…took me a couple decades a few shrinks to get over it. There are some things in life more important than simply improving our running game!

BTW when the Chiefs cut him it really wrecked their team eh? Oh wait they’re in the Super Bowl!!!

  31. GhostofSchiano Says:

Great, just great, I can see it now. Winston and hunt out on a Saturday night in Ybor city, add a little alcohol, maybe a tiny bit of recreational marijuana, a few young ladies and WHAM…. And then another WHAM as in Goodells hammer coming down on these two immature clowns. NO THANKS

  32. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

I’d take him for a very cheap flyer

  33. Jeagan1999 Says:

I think there will be a few quality RBs in the 2nd – 4th rounds of the draft we can and should target! JK Dobbins and AJ Dillon would be great potential targets for the Bucs new offense.

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

I down but it bears further investigation. They’ve paid enough guys already to sit home and do nothing

  35. BucInCLE Says:

  37. The Coroner Says:

Bucs took Justin Evans at 50 (and passed on Alvin Kamara at 67).
Took Godwin instead of Hunt (finally the Bucs actually made an intelligent draft pick by taking Godwin).

  38. tmaxcon Says:

  39. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Price dropping? How have all the other Bucs low character signing worked out? They were not only horrible picks but spread bad vibes like cancer throughout the locker room. C’mon Joe, no need to entice Licht, he’s good enough at picking losers. This team is screaming for a LeeRoy Selmon or Derrick Brooks type personality which it sorely lacks and instead you suggest this loser cuz he’ll come cheap. And we wonder why this team sucks year after year.

  44. Colin in Canada Says:

I doubt weed will be allowed with the new CBA. Its basically allowed now. They know when they get tested and have plenty of time to get it out of their system. Anyone who fails shows that they are either dumb or they have a legitimate issue with drugs. I think they should keep it the way it is now.

  45. Tampabuscsbro Says:

God this place is great. we have people wanting a woman beater to be running back with our gr@per at QB.

T troll thinks that a guy getting into a car accident and getting hurt is the same as getting suspended cause you beat a woman lied about it and got caught.

Joe thinks we were one running back short of making the playoffs that winston’s INT’s would have magically been cut in half. even though his INT’s were so bad that it probably would have gone down by…maybe 5 with us still missing the playoffs.

An FSU homer is probably going to come along and screech about a safety or a running back whose knees are dust soon too.

The boomers in here never cease to amaze me.

That’s one of your cheaper shots tmax. Also a bold-face lie.

StPete & Jean, I agree wholeheartedly. I believe in 2nd chances too, but we don’t NEED him here. What we DO NEED is a stud running back to complement what RoJo gives us, but without the ‘baggage’. Image is everything in today’s NFL, so rest assured that they’re keeping a close eye on players like Kareem Hunt. One wrong slip-up, no matter how ‘innocent’, and he’d be right back on suspension … and the Bucs running attack would take a major hit. There are plenty of quality RBs to pair with RoJo would wouldn’t be in jeopardy like he will be for probably the rest of his career. Risk mitigation is a big consideration when doing multi-million $$$ contracts. We don’t need any more suspended players.

  53. stpetebucsfan Says:

Seems whenever I post TMAX it also goes into moderation. Does TMAX need protection?

  58. stpetebucsfan Says:

    D.R.

You make an excellent point. Hunt’s skill set mirrors ROJO’s…small fast guy. We need a true bruiser. I’d like a monster size guy like Alstott. I realize there is only ONE Mike but there are some knockoffs that would be interesting.

    Marine

“You mean to tell me there is an NFL player that smokes weed? That’s crazy!!! Lol.”

The next CBA should be very interesting. There are more than a few players who utilize weed to unwind and treat their pain. They point out that the league wants them to take far more addictive pills which when combined with alcohol are very..very unhealthy.

There is also research in Israel where a doc is testing white rats with traumatic brain and spinal damage and the THC is actually helping to restore function.

Full disclosure…I have a Florida MM card…so perhaps I’m biased. LMAO

  59. BucInCLE Says:

    @stpete

Thanks for the name calling. My point is that I don’t agree with his actions. But I don’t think we should lose sight of nuance in our society. He did something bad and he paid for it. That’s all I was saying. It wasn’t if he was excused, it was if it’s a pattern of abuse or an isolated incident. The circumstances lead me to believe it was isolated. I’m not here to like the guy, I won’t ever meet him. I just don’t think it’ll happen again.

  61. Big Stinky Says:

Would of Drafted him and maybe things turn out different with ME13 to talk to. The incident with the woman probably doesn’t happen here. Bad luck more than anything. Speaking of the Draft, I want Burrow bad so we can keep that front seven together for at LEAST 3 more years. I know it’s unrealistic but trade Jameis and 2 first round picks to Cincinnati and see if they take it. Maybe there are Winstonites in Cincy that think he can change too. Only other option to keep the defense together is transition tag Winston and let someone outbid us like Chucky. Do we really get 2 first round picks if that happens? If so, it would be dumb to pass on doing it. Best QB at 14 unless you can drop back and still get him if no one behind you is looking for a QB. Round 2 a pass rusher or OL if he can run block and if you get a second pick for dropping back at 14 I would pick a RB or WR, whichever position is deepest would get in round 3. Might drop back with one of those 2nd round picks if my guy might still be there later. Best player available for the rest of the picks unless we have a need because of ALL the FA’S this year.

I would try like hell to swing that Burrow pick. I don’t watch much college football so I have no idea which QB’S are worth taking in Round 1. This is ONLY the second time I have wanted a QB that I saw play before the NFL. I wanted us to take Drew Lock when he dropped to us in the 2nd round last year but I never seen him in a game. Only one other QB that I saw in college and I thought, WOW, he is going to be good in the NFL. Only saw one game BTW but was so impressed with how accurate he was with his passes that I had to somehow remember his name. Luckily it was easy to remember with his first and last name associated with football, Russell athletic and Wilson footballs. Couldn’t figure out how nobody saw what I did (in that game) when he fell to the third round. I figured other than that game he must have thrown a lot of picks and I guessed that I was wrong about him, guess not. After what Burrow did to Clemson’s defense I say bring him here if Cincinnati wants to deal like I have heard.

  62. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Bucincleveland

Apologies for the insult. It was a poor choice on my part As I expressed though I’m unhinged when it comes to men who put their hands much less their feet on a woman.

I shouldn’t have reacted so wildly to you because your view represents the majority here.

Kareem had another brush a year before this incident that was basically swept under the rug in the name of giving him a second chance.

I pointed out that Kareem had it even worse than me. His father repeated domestic abuse…prison…drugs…my father was booze. I truly understand the challenge of growing up like that and honestly wish Kareem luck in getting his head on straight.

I just do not want it to happen here. He has a history…and upbringing and as a poster pointed out we do not do well with problem children. Our locker room is cool right now. I’d love to keep it that way. JW has been on his best behavior since Phoenix…why challenge him with a bad influence in the locker room?

  75. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Guys, I would think you’d be used to this annual tradition by now. Every off season Joe wants a good running back only to be disappointed. At this point he is desperate! I feel for him, because there always seems to be higher priorities.

Take this year. We need a Right Tackle more than anything else (thus far). NOw, if we get one in free agency somehow, or in trade (unlikely), then he might…might…get his wish.

I wouldn’t count on it though. Why fight tradition?

Besides, fix the oline to be better at run blocking, and Rojo will excel. It would also free up our tight ends.

  76. D1 Says:

    Big stinky,

Wilson slid to the 3rd round because of his height. It wasnt due to any red flags or lack of success in college. NFL Draft experts , Coaches, scouts etc thought a player has to be 6ft 4 to fit the ideal of a prototype NFL player.

It wasn’t a coincidence that the team who drafted him was lead by a former college coach. Long term NFL coaches have a certain amount of disdain for the college game. They dismiss successful college offense and defensive schemes as gimmicks. You can’t run that gimmick offense/defense in the NFL is what those old pro guys say and believe. That’s why a guy like Wilson falls to the 3rd and some 6ft 4 strong armed kid from East Western poly New Hampshire

  77. D1 Says:

State comes out of the combine with 1st round draft potential.

Fortunately, for the last few draft classes that had shorter QB’S , Wilson was successful. He opened the eyes and minds of even the most stubborn NFL types. Now there’s still a group who will assure you that a 5ft 10 prospect can’t be successful in the league but thankfully that group is dwindling in numbers.

  78. D1 Says:

    Doosh,

I believe you are under the impression that the league wants to catch players who use drugs.

Truth is, They really don’t want to be involved in that kind of activity.
But they are like any business and have to move with public opinion and pressure. If the league did nothing , the torch bearing mob would be at their door accusing the league of xyz and demanding that they do something .

So they put out a dog and pony show for the public, who by in large, buy into the league’s good guy image. If a player tests positive , the public and media rush to condemn his behavior and character. The player is the bad guy. The public and media is satisfied. The league continues to be successful.

Did I miss the part from anyone that Hunt is a restricted free agent so Cleveland holds his rights this year. A one year 2nd round tender is $3.2 million. Cleveland already signed him so it seems likely that this latest incident is not going to change them wanting him for next season.

So if Cleveland does sign him to the tender then for the Buc’s to get him – they would not only need to sign him to a contract but give Cleveland their 2nd round draft choice.

Why would you do that instead of going Cam Akers who can catch the ball or some better than Cam in the 2nd round? Then you have a running back on a lesser contract for 4 years and hopefully equal ability and more likely availability. i.e. no future suspension possibility

If Cleveland does not tender him, then this article could make sense.

I suppose people come here for different reasons…for me, I enjoy the articles and news. Sometimes makes me think and ponder, other times laugh, other times makes me angry. If I’m one of the Joes, I feel I’ve done my job. I’m happy reading every day.

SPBF, thanks for sharing with us the stories of what you had to endure as a child. I am very sorry that you had to go through that.

I admit that I would not be able to see such a situation today, on the street, without intervening physically, and have done so before.

When I first saw the Kareem video, I thought it was something that he could be rehabilitated from, and I thought his demeanor following the act was an encouraging sign.

I can 100% understand why you do not see it this way, and respect all that you had to share with us on the matter. Thank you sir.

If he gets let go…then bring him in on a zero tolerance contract…meaning if you screw up you don’t get paid! PERIOD …sometimes these guys need time to adjust to what the rea life is about…some come around some don’t !!

  89. Sport Says:

St Pete – mad respect for you sharing. I did not experience that type of childhood, but I can empathize. Same for Kareem.

I understand why a good portion of you want him. Stepping away from the character issues comes easier for you. For others, me included, character matters. In fact, it’s THE most important thing in anyone’s life. Btw, people with high character make mistakes too. No one is perfect.

However, the post above about the business side of his situation makes this option a strong 👎

    In BA I Trust!

If we wanted someone that beat up women we would have drafted Mixon. I really don’t see it happening. Not against it, but don’t see it happening.

Joe I hope you don’t read all these comments. Some people are dumb as hell. I remember when Mike Evans took a knee and I read comments about how he should be cut and saying a lot of damning things about him. Evans is one of the most stand up guys you’ll ever meet. But he produces on the field so I guess we will just sweep the damning comments about his character under the rug. If the Bucs were to sign Hunt watch how many people attack him and threaten to not be fans until he gets a start and rushes for 150 and 2 tds on the Saints and we beat them or if he rushes for 3 tds against the Packers next season and we best them. The attitudes will then change if he’s leading the Bucs ground attack and we’re off to a 4-1 start. The over reaction in fans is hilarious.
