Old Bucs Coaches In The News
January 15th, 2020Chucky may have been in St. Petersburg but his moves yesterday made news around the NFL.
Yes, Chucky was at the Fruitdome studying propsects during practices of the 2020 Shrine Bowl, which will be played Saturday night at the Fruitdome.
(Joe spoke with Chucky briefly. The subject matter? Uncle Ira!)
Chucky, a new resident in Sin City as the Raiders have moved to the desert, was one of many NFL coaches and general managers checking out potential draft picks and possible undrafted free agents.
And despite being 2,300 miles away in St. Petersburg, Chucky was making news in Vegas, and not at the craps tables. Chucky canned former popular Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, who coached with the Bucs in Dirk Koetter’s final season.
With Buckner (a former Bucco Bruce Arians assistant), the Raiders came close to tripling their sack output from 13 to 32.
So who replaced Buckner? A guy Chucky won a Super Bowl ring with as coach of the Bucs. None other than former Bucs defensive line coach Rod Marinelli.
Marinelli was recently the Cowboys defensive coordinator.
So when the Bucs travel to Vegas this fall to play the Raiders — who is ready for that trip? — it will be like a family reunion for the Bucs. Only thing missing will be Monte Kiffin.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:43 am
0-16 Marinelli… lol… Jerry Jones stripped 0-16 all his control a couple of year ago… let go of the failed past joe….. this one is reaching and pretty funny considering his epic failures…. 0-16 Marinelli legacy is set enough said. just another washed up has been that had 1 good year in tampa.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:58 am
Classic Chucky, can’t make it anywhere on his own or develop his own QB. This guy might be a fraud.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:04 am
Budda, re-read the article and study some history. Name one head coach who did not have assistant coaches.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:18 am
I would love to have Buckner our line was improved but gotta believe he could provide additional value to the line. He was a bad a$$ DT when he played…

You just proved your stupidity beyond a reasonable doubt. Rod Marinelli was amazing in Tampa. According to Sapp, he was the one that made the Tampa defense go, not Kiffin. Considering he was here from 1996 all the way until he was brought in to coach the talentless Lions under Matt Millen (nobody could have succeeded there), he proved himself for far more than one season. You are a complete and total imbecile.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:39 am
Well said Brandon… LOL.. Marinelli is definitely not a 1yr wonder & the Kiffin comment from Sapp is TRUE… Marinelli was the straw that stirred the drink

i think our current staff….
HOF asst coach imo, but no thanks….
GO BUCS!!!!

Congratulations on the dumbest post to date, you must be around 12 years old.
January 15th, 2020 at 12:05 pm
Still our best and most successful coach ever. Idiot Bucs Fan brainwashed by Duemig ran him out. How has that worked out for you? Run Winston out and it will be another 10 year set back for the franchise. Glazer’s learn from your past mistakes. Don’t let the idiot fan base dictate your decisions.
January 15th, 2020 at 12:47 pm
I think a true, informed football fan knows that the Lions 0- 16 season is on Matt Millen. Knute Rockne would’ve won two games with that roster.
January 15th, 2020 at 1:02 pm
i will be there. i know many buc groups and fans will be going and doing meetups but joe can we set anything up to actually meet you guys and ira? a ton of fans will want to show up for this and support the team. would help bring many fans together as well.
January 15th, 2020 at 1:03 pm
Why wouldn’t you want to get “the band” back together?
January 15th, 2020 at 1:15 pm
That was not TPax’s most useless comment. That are all equally useless… like when he railed us for drafting McCoy instead of Suh… despite Suh had been picked.
January 15th, 2020 at 1:31 pm
Even if Kiffin were interested, I’m not sure Gruden would want him back given how things unraveled in his final year. He’s doing what every coach does when given the chance…how soon until Bill Callahan rejoins him?
January 15th, 2020 at 1:36 pm
i see that Low Standard Brandon has pulled his head out of dungy the clowns rear end to comment about the failed regime…. bucs won 5 post season games during the defensive high point that is embarrassing at best and hardly legendary…. bucs were a HORRIBLE team with a HIGHLY ranked defense that choked in the post season and never won a meaningful game after sapp left…. you can’t rewrite history because it makes your feel better sir…. bucs where underachieving fluke champions that were wasted by dungy the one dimensional clown… history proves this beyond a reasonable doubt… Dungy failed and the washed has beens and their pathetic 5 play off wins 3 in one year need to go away…. sorry you are to weak to accept reality sir… now back to your safe space!!! 0-16 marinelli is just another failed branch on the dungy the clown coaching shrub…. 0-16 you can’t recover from that or place blame elsewhere. garbage coach that the game has passed by

January 15th, 2020 at 1:42 pm
let go of the failed past people it was two decades ago and only 1 good year at that…. dungy’s offensive units were equally as unwatchable as Mike Smith’s and Lovie Smith’s defensive units. Look to the bright future led by the true and real the savior of the bay Jameis Winston
January 15th, 2020 at 1:43 pm
7-9 for Gruden this past season.
10 million a season for 7-9…
I’m a Gruden fan for obvious reasons..but..I still think the Davis kid made a mistake bringing him back….
We’ll see.
January 15th, 2020 at 1:47 pm
Change is good! Thankful the Buccaneers have finally mitigated the radon gas that saturated the locker-room…apparently leaking from Lovies’ basement. It kill players’ will to win. Finally, fans have been treat for severe depression and hopefully will be taken off suicide watch by mid-season next year.

January 15th, 2020 at 2:45 pm
I may book this trip. I need to go to Vegas anyway and this is an excellent excuse. BABE! I’m going to Vegas, I’ll be back….. maybe.

What a late holiday gift…
Thank you TMax
I truly enjoy looking up peaches and herb every once an a while on YouTube.
This great reference makes my life better evertime you bust it out.
Totally not kidding. THANKYOU.
And also thank you for getting McCoy out of town.
I believe you marginalizing him with the Cancer93 moniker caused ripples up top. Very Trump like.

0-16 you cant make that up lol damn so pathetic

+Anybody that hate,s Chucky, The only coach that coached us to win it all, well your an idiot……..
January 15th, 2020 at 4:00 pm
Tmaxipad, what you can’t makeup is you’re a troll. How many times do you need to be told to kick rocks? Go to a fans site that you may actually be a fan of. Or at least get a job and a boyfriend to keep you busy enough that trolling isn’t the best thing you got going in your life. You couldn’t be more pathetic of a person if you tried.
January 15th, 2020 at 4:19 pm
Dungy is a HOF you everloving moron. 100 years from now his legedary status will lstill live.
January 15th, 2020 at 4:24 pm
tmax.. maybe you are a new kid on the block….especially since you didn’t get the band back together humor. But actually Gruden came in at the end of the window we had, which started about three or four years earlier. A few injuries the next season, and the leaving of McKay, was the beginning of the journey down a long and dark road.
And when Monte left to join his joke of a coach son in the middle of the season, and when the team tanked, the last good HC in about 20 years was fired at the end if the year, after having a season we can’t even get close to sniffing now.
You might want to get your history straightened out. And BTW…no one wins the SB without really accomplishing something. Too bad we only got one, when we could have had multiples with a decent O. But such is life.

The so called savior has had 5 years to save the Bay and has saved Nothing!

You do know we are talking about Defensive coaches.. your observation on that Buc ERA is OFF… It was the awful Offense that did us in… HELLO….
Greatest Show on Turf managed just 11 points against the BEST damn D..
Not their fault that we had Mr Green Wave as our QB good Ol’ Shaun King..
Yea that’s how awesome the D staff & players were. We went to the NFC championship w that clown at QB..
My Lord what are you watching….

Trollmax, welcome back from vacation. How was Thailand? Did you get your fill of ladyboys?! Speaking for me and all other jbf posters, here’s hoping you did. Thank goodness antibiotics are so cheap these days! But on to the task at hand. Brandon, Chris K, Rod have already said what’s worth saying to your pathetic, trollish countenance. But please, keep regurgitating your keywords (so, so creative): cancer/failed/pathetic/low standard/embarrassing/underachieving/one dimensional/clown/failed…hey wait, that sounds an awful lot like a poster we know! As often as you spew these words we have a pretty good idea of what your life is like.
Love always, Little Stevie
January 15th, 2020 at 5:52 pm
The third year is the year that Gruden was supposed to put a winning product on the field. Does anyone see that happening in 2020? Neither do I. Holes all over the roster and his picks are dwindling. He made some great picks with Mayock, but he’s a ways away. Desperately need WRs and linebackers, for starters. And the QB is average at best.
January 15th, 2020 at 5:58 pm
Jon Gruden coached our SB winning team. Kudos and gratitude.
We paid “bigly” for that. A loss of draft picks that cost us for the next decade.
Worth it for most to get the SB.
But could we stop rewriting history? After that one glorious season Jon Gruden was a LOSING coach in Tampa!!!
The losing started immediately. He went 7-9 the first year after the SB with the SB team.
His overall record was 45-51 after the SB. A LOSING record.
He seemed to be getting back to winning with a 9-7 record the final two years. What did him in was ironically early success in that final year. Starting 9-3 with the playoffs virtually assured Chucky LOST the final four games finishing 9-7 and missing the playoffs.
Love Chucky for our SB but we do not need to deify him.
January 15th, 2020 at 6:12 pm
Look to the bright future led by the true and real the savior of the bay Jameis Winston-
And the truly meaningful game(s) Jameis has won would be….????
January 15th, 2020 at 6:14 pm
St Pete-
Bucs lost last 4 games of Gruden’s last year because Kiffin quit to join Junior and then Defense quit.
January 15th, 2020 at 7:15 pm
Alan…reality breaks through. People want to forget how St. Monte bailed out on the Bucs before the end of the season. I understand he was trying to help his kid…but he shafted Gruden and the Bucs. And his kid was a bad joke of a HC. And you can bet that Gruden sees M and his “pound the rock” as a large part of his Success and SB title.
January 15th, 2020 at 7:48 pm
Alan
Thanks for that historic Buc’s history. I had forgotten WHY he lost those last four.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:41 pm
Why does Tmaxipad only flare up in the offseason. During the season quiet as a mouse except for a here or there dumb comment. But all offseason this site is hard to come to because of him. Now we will have to hear him all offseason with all his dumb predictions that are debunked by week 3 and he goes silent and starts it all over again the next offseason. Joe just put this dude on offseason timeout. Because I forgot how much I started hating this site last offseason until he just reminded me by hijacking every story with dumb opinionated remarks that can’t be proven true or false. Just a mans opinion. But are so stupid that you can’t believe you even want to respond to it. Please do t let this happen again this offseason. We all beg you. I love the comments to get how every other bucs fan feels. Not or have one guy hijack it and then everyone respond to his stupidity. So nip it in the butt before it starts I beg you

Jeff, trollmax really is quite simply just a miserable human being and a definitive troll. I never comment on his absurd assertions because that just gives him the oxygen of respectability that he craves so dearly. I simply make fun of him because to be honest it’s kind of fun. I admit it’s a bit naughty to play with children this way though. Brains aren’t fully developed yet.

Stpetebucsfan,
When the Gruden is mentioned , I am always perplexed by the comments from many long time fans of the team. Particularly, fans who follow the team closely over the years. I mention this group because this is the portion of fans who I’d least expect to find such a distorted view of the Gruden era.
Gruden was a 500 coach , one good year , broke up the team because of his ego, fired mckay which lead to a precipitous decline of the team, never developed a QB, etc etc. I’ve heard these things a million times over.
I won’t go into those specific charges individually but rather address them all and just say , any comprehensive review of the facts would prove these charges as shallow observations that over time has transformed them into hard facts that come together perfect to form a completely seamless but false history of the era.
I would like to point out a few things that are always absence this topic and I believe it’s done deliberately as it’s inclusion alters in not downright refutes many of the bullet points listed above.
Do you recall the coach the Bucs announced as their new Head Coach after firing Dungy? It wasn’t Gruden! Any recollection on the reasons given as to why this coach passed on the opportunity? Now, ask yourself why another candidate would take the job that was just judged as a bad deal by one of the most respected coaches of all time. Especially one who was already employed as a Head Coach with another a team. Think about it as a parallel move not a premonition or someone seeking employment. This is the case with Gruden.
He didn’t seek out the bucs job . He wasnt an ex head coach or assistant coach looking for another opportunity. He was the target of a trade with the Raiders. When has that ever happened before? A team needing to hire a head coach and the only way possible is to trade for him.
Yes I’m aware of the mckay selection and I would remind you of how those actions by mckay earned him zero points with the Glazer’s. Everyone says Gruden got mckay ousted. McKay laid a great foundation for his own fate by publically going against his owners decision on who to hire as the teams head coach. Any reasonable person would have expected mckay to be fired immediately for such a blatant act that could have been classified as a power play or down right insubordination. Point is, fans never consider this and how it impacted the overall relationship between the owner and gm.
Last, After the SB , My position was the team is poised to win or compete for a couple more championships . But in the back of my head, I always thought it’s smarter to blow up the team and begin a rebuilding process. The fact is the team slowly bled out over a period of years.
The fact is, this situation was both predictable and enviable due to the actions of the team before Gruden was hired as coach. To lay the blame entirely on him , is convenient but it’s not accurate nor fair.
January 16th, 2020 at 8:53 am
Carr is a good QB. Gruden doesn’t believe in a QB coach. And he’s got ancient offensive coordinator Greg Olsen that the game has passed him by. Gruden ruins young QBs Derek Carr was an all pro for three years before Chucky showed up. If Chuckys not happy with Carr give him our second round pick for him. Then Chucky can trade his 2 #1 picks our second round pick and his #1 pick in 2021 to the Bengals for their #1 pick and ruin Joe Burrow.

As always an excellent post backed with facts that support your opinion.
Perhaps I wrote the post poorly…wouldn’t be the first or last.
My intention was not to BLAME Gruden for the disaster that followed his SB win, just to point out that he was not the GREAT coach that is portrayed here by many posters. I stand by my last thought which is that we shouldn’t deify him. GREAT coaches would have won with that SB team or as you suggest blown it up and started winning again.
Some of Chucky’s legend here both pro and con has probably been inflated.
Don’t know about all those rumors…perhaps Big Dog needing ratings? But there was a lot of talk about how Chucky lost his team because of being two faced with his players. But those are just rumors and I always appreciate folks like you who go all Paul Harvey for us…”Now you know the rest of the story”

Thanks for a specific example. I obviously am not in a position to really know.
Seems like where there is smoke there is a fire.
Your cousin would know better than me or the late Big Dog may he RIP.

D1…WRONG…
McKay was gone the day that the Glazers went over his head, and instead of hiring Marvin Lewis, who he wanted, they basically castrated him and hired Gruden. To McKay”s credit, he did help assemble the Offense that was good enough to help win the SB. And he and Gruden weren’t on the same page. But McKay was a dead man walking when the Gruden deal was done.
