Idiot Proposal

January 28th, 2020

Laughable suggestion.

To quote the voice of reason, Phil Mushnick of the New York Post, there’s nerve and there’s gall. And then there is unmitigated gall, the kind manufactured recently by a national NFL columnist.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report decided to type of a list of one free agent each NFL teams needs to walk away from.

To demonstrate he does not monitor the Bucs any more than a Brazilian-born model on South Beach who watches Thursday night games because her sugar daddy has a yacht parked on Biscayne Bay and a condo in the Caymans and happens to like football, Gagnon has the balls to suggest the Bucs should wave goodbye to Jason Pierre-Paul because they can keep Carl Nassib as a cheaper option.

JPP had an impressive 8.5 sacks over just 10 games in 2019, but Nassib is a better all-around player with more room to grow. And he was penalized a lot less frequently than Pierre-Paul, as well.

The best strategy is probably to prioritize the two younger pass-rushers and let Pierre-Paul take his talents elsewhere.

Yes, Joe assumes Gagnon was sober when he typed this.

JPP is strong against the run. Nassib has never impressed Joe as the second coming of Batman Wood.

Anyone who remotely monitors the Bucs knows NFL sack leader Shaq Barrett was shut down for two games in October because the Bucs had no one else to take heat off him.

And this happened with Nassib already on the roster. So we already got a preview of what life might be for Shaq and the Bucs defense with only Nassib left to rush the passer. It wasn’t — and won’t be — pretty.

And while Gagnon applauds JPP for getting 8.5 sacks, he either ignores or omits that JPP missed all offseason conditioning, training camp and half a season because he cracked his neck in a wreck.

Even JPP admitted he wasn’t fully in shape until almost December.

Folks, if the Bucs don’t bring back JPP, they better sign a proven pass rusher to help out Shaq or this defense could easily collapse.

Maybe it is just Joe, but Joe is sick of seeing productive if not excellent players leave the Bucs to go lead their new teams deep into the playoffs while the Bucs continue to wallow in the mud of losing.

Quit letting productive players go! This shouldn’t be an exam in trigonometry.

New jerseys? I saw the post yesterday, Joe!

  2. Dreghost Says:

JPP is a natural born leader on and off the field and a alpha male while rushing the passer! Please resign this guy! He was easily a double digit sack guy had he played an entire season!

  3. 40 TDs Says:

Maybe it is just Joe, but Joe is sick of seeing productive if not excellent players leave the Bucs to go lead their new teams deep into the playoffs while the Bucs continue to wallow in the mud of losing. – Joe

Except for Mr I-Scream aka McCoy who stayed in the basement and brought his new team to new lows.

    Suh is the real #93.

    Go Bucs!!!

  4. Sport Says:

Bucs priority is signing back our entire defense. Get a new starting RT. I would extend Godwin. The rest get the conversation Arians gave the Honey Badger – this is the money we have left over. Take it or leave it.

    In BA I Trust!

  5. 40 TDs Says:

Arians has Licht grabbed by the ear. The defense will be back!

  6. This is our year!!! Says:

This guys an idiot. JPP is the key. He had 12 sacks in 2018 by himself when everyone focused on him. Put Shaq and JPP together healthy for a season and you are going to see both players close to 20 sacks. Sign the defensive line, bring in the honey badger and this defense will shut anyone down if healthy. Go Bucs!!!!

  7. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Although I 100% agree that we CAN NOT let JPP get away, Shaq was also shut down in weeks 11 and 16. How do you explain that, Joe? Shaq was a beast throughout the year, JPP just made the defense as a whole better. Carl Nassib is a good player, and held his own well when called upon.

  8. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Joe, you’re right, like Fitzpatrick getting 2 less wins than the Bucs in a partial season of starts with the talentless tanking Dolphins. Team MVP, Team Leadership award. Jersey already in Canton. Sigh. what could have been.

  9. Buccernutter Says:

I still don’t care what anyone says. I would keep JPP over shaq.

  10. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

They need to sign Shaq and JPP.

I apologize to JPP for saying his career was over when he broke his neck.

I was wrong. I’ll have to check the archives but I think I may have been wrong once or twice before.

  11. Joe in Michigan Says:

If Nassib really was an “all around better player” than JPP, as this guy believes, he would be getting offers in the $20 million dollar range per year at 26/27 years old. Nassib will be lucky to get half that, and is half the player JPP is.

  12. Joe Says:

    Admiral:

Please name any pass rusher who gets a sack every game. With JPP and Shaq on the field, offenses have to pick their own poison.

This is elementary football even if you ignore evidence.

  13. Ndog Says:

Wait did 951 make a proposal?

  14. Brandon Says:

JPP can’t be allowed to leave but please don’t slam Nassib. Nassib is a Greg Spires type of player. He does the dirty work and gives 100% effort. He was elected captain for a reason. His work ethic and drive are fantastic, he does the little things to make other people successful. Should he be paid like JPP or Shaq? No. Should an honest effort be made to retain his services? Yes.

  15. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Ghost per your name you have been wrong at least twice lol

  16. Billy_45 Says:

Just plain silly to say JPP and Shaq were shut down twice, how do you explain that?

    Week 11 SAINTS
Bucs entire team had 1 sack Mike Edwards on a safety blitz.
Drew Brees doesn’t get sacked often because Payton plays the quick screen game and Brees has a quick release. Saints also have a good O Line.

    Week 16 TEXANS
LMAO Bucs had 5 sacks, 3 for JPP, 1 for SMB, and 1 for Carl Nassib. Shaq drew the double team almost the entire game.
That’s not being shut down. That’s simple allocation.

Every once in a while the other team has good players too.

Point is from the 5th game on after Shaq tied an NFL record for most sacks in the 1st 4 games, he was double teamed heavily.

Remind me what game Nassib had 3 sacks because of that?

  17. Buczilla Says:

Gagnon is just sore that we pulled a fast one on the Giants to get JPP for only a 3rd rounder. Plus, most national dudes are clueless morons when it comes to their Buc’s coverage.

  18. MadMax Says:

    Like Ira said….package deal!

  19. 813bucboi Says:

both need to be signed at the same time in the same room….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  20. BucEmUp Says:

when you really dig into it, shaw had a game or two with a bunch of sacks, and then went a while like a ghost until jpp came back. Jpp was on his own in 2018 and whilr he didnt have game.wrecker games eith 4 sacks he was more consistent. Is it possible jpp is more valuable than Shaq? Tough decisions.I would trim.some fat somewhere else on the team and find a way to keep them all together

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

Put simply, the Bucs can ill-afford to let talented, proven players walk out the door. They need to find a way to get this done, both he and Shaq.

  22. Bradinator Says:

Sign JPP! It’s a no brainer. Shaq too! The two MOST important guys to sign this off season.

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

We should sign ALL the defense. They were playing well at the end of the season.

Meanwhile our vaunted offense put up THREE freaking points in the four quarters comprising the second halves of those final two important games..including a goose egg against our divisional rivals.

Well we know it can’t be “blameless” fault that we failed to score. Let’s blame the running game…nope ROJO ran for over 100 yards and close to a 10 YPC.

Oh yeah it was the rookie kicker’s fault we only scored three in four quarters. Yep he missed all three attempts against Atlanta..made all extra points against Atlanta and Houston…he was 2-3 for FG’s including a 50 yarder with one kick blocked against Houston…he had the ONLY 3 points scored in the 3rd quarter.

We went the final three quarters of second halves with three points from our mighty offense!

Pay the freaking defense…they were the ones who were “ballin’ at the second half. “You better check out your sheet!”

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Actually, the Bucs may not have a choice in the matter anyway, and aside from the clear leadership advantage JPP offers, Carl Nassib might be the better option.

Consider this: Nassib started 9 games in 2018 and acquired 6.5 sacks. That put him on pace for 13 sacks if he had started 16 games.

In 2019, Nassib started 8 games and got 6 sacks, which put him on pace for 12 sacks if he had started 16 games.

Obviously, I would take JPP in a heartbeat…but Nassib is a good option to replace him…which I believe will be the case because I do not believe JPP wants to remain in Tampa.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Nassib will be what Golston was supposed to become.

  26. Warrenfb12 Says:

This is just lazy work. I don’t understand how guys like this are employed to cover sports if they can’t even watch the games.

  27. Swampbuc Says:

Well what should we expect from some imbecile named Gagnon?

  28. Buccernutter Says:

gholston became what he was suppposed to become this season. dude is a baller at run stuffing.

  29. Buccernutter Says:

I’ve never seen someone excuse a kicker so much for failing at HIS ONE JOB! ONE GOAL! KICK IT HIGH AND STRAIGHT.

but but but don’t blame him, jameis needs to do it all and when he throws an int, BLAME JAMEIS AND ONLY JAMEIS!

    lol smh

  30. fernando diaz Says:

Joe, guy is an idiot, you can bank on that.

We have dominant bookends we need to keep.

  31. Jean Lafitte Says:

I think Joe suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Joe is notorious at suggesting we dump or trade productive players.

  32. Joe Says:

Joe is notorious at suggesting we dump or trade productive players.

    Such as?

  33. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Quit letting productive players go!” Give ’em he11 Joe (I assume that’s what the exclamation point was for; Realist is proud).

StPete, you nailed it with your “We should sign ALL the defense”. Shaq’s productivity speaks for itself. So does JPP’s, not just last year but over his entire career. The same goes for Suh; without him the Bucs wouldn’t have had the best run-stopping defense in the NFL nor would JPP & Shaq have gotten nearly as many sacks & QB Hits. Nassib more than held his own, contributing 6 sacks himself in essentially 13 games (could’ve potentially had say 8 sacks in 16 games if he hadn’t gotten hurt).

But folks shouldn’t turn up their noses at what a he11uva job Will Gholston did last year, and Minter when he filled in in White’s absence. May not have been spectacular, but it was solid football. We NEED to keep guys like that. They know the system & know what’s expected of them when their number is called.

  34. Wesley Says:

What a joke, Nassib didn’t do anything this year.

  35. Bird Says:

They are a package deAl for sure until they can draft a younger replacement
Shaq will get bigger / longer deal

Sign jpp to 2 -4 year with only 2 guaranteed. Mark him down for 10 sacks

Cant double both with vea up the middle
Suh likely expendable although i wish they could get for 1 more year.

  36. Jeff Says:

Bucs will fail to sign JPP and Suh will leave for a SB contender. No pass rush and the Bucs secondary will be torched again. Jason Light is a bad GM. He’ll blow this.

  37. unbelievable Says:

The defense improved greatly when JPP returned.

    He’s also a legit leader.

    Bring him back!
