(Another) Edge Rusher

January 4th, 2020

Bama edge rusher a fit in the draft?

In Joe’s mind, you cannot have enough good edge rushers.

And even though the Bucs transformed their wet noodle 2018 pass rush to a good one in 2019 with the NFL’s sack leader and a couple of other guys known to hunt quarterbacks, maybe that’s enough?

Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports doesn’t believe so. Nevermind the status of Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul, both free agents. Wilson seems to think if a certain SEC pass rusher is on the board when the Bucs pick at No. 14, Alabama’s Terrell Lewis just may be a fit.

Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul are set to be free agents in the spring, and even if the Bucs choose to re-sign at least one of them, Lewis, who is finally healthy after battling injuries the last two seasons, was unstoppable off the edge in 2019 for the Crimson Tide.

Well, we should know about midway through March if an edge rusher is a strong need.

Then again, in Joe’s eyes it’s always a need.

    I want Javon Kinlaw

” Lewis, who is finally healthy after battling injuries the last two seasons”

    ………..

All I needed to hear right there. Hard Pass

  3. bucnole Says:

not at #14 for sure with concerns like that. . . Im out

  4. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

Why not have someone learn behind these two so he can get some snaps before he starts in his 2nd year

  5. Steven007 Says:

SB, I understand your reticence but many college players overcome injuries. That’s how we got Dean this year. And in the past Curtis Martin overcame injuries most of his collegiate career to end up a Hall of famer. of course neither one of them were first-round picks so there’s that…

  6. Matt Says:

Offensive Tackle, Tua or Herbert if on the board. Easy. I actually think there’s a great chance we can trade back for a ransom if one or both are available. We need to accumulate a lot of solid 2nd and 3rd round cheap talent to help buffer all the big spending we’re about to dish out.

  7. Matt Says:

Steven007- or Frank Gore, to your point. Or Jalen Smith orrr orrrrr Dequan Bowers lol or Jack Cichy or …., we’ve had bad luck historically with previously injured players. Jamel Dean is very very resilient he has really impressed me after getting abused by DK Metcalf.

  8. Bucs Guy Says:

DT is a bigger need than DE. Suh has maybe one year left and he may be gone already. Other than Vea, you have nobody. Now is the time to pick someone that could fill the void for the next 10 years.

I would love Brown from Auburn, but he will be long gone at pick # 14. The Bucs only get him by trading up — which I don’t see happening. However, I believe Javon Kinlaw (South Carolina) will still be available. He seems to be the clear 2nd best DT in the draft.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

First of all….we need to resign Shaq & JPP……

    Second…..we need a starting RT in round 1 or 2…..and a RB in round 2 or 3….

We may need to draft a DT if we don’t have the funds to resign Suh.

All options are open right now…..including a QB.

  10. AwShbucs Says:

I’d much rather draft AJ Epenesa.

Hes a perfect fit for our scheme in the sense that he has enough size and strength to play 3-4 DE, in addition to having the athleticism and skill as a pass rusher to play Edge OLB.

My top prospects for our 1st round pick at this point are as follows in no particular order. Javon Kinlaw, AJ Epenesa, Jedrick Wills, Grant Delpit, and Jonathan Taylor/ JK Dobbins.

  11. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Matt – You obviously don’t want Jameis back no matter what. Have you even watched Oregon this year? Herbert sucks!!!! Man we have a dumb fan base. Give up the guy who led the league in yards, was second in TD passes, and led the 3rd best offense with no running game. Yeah, lets blow a first rounder on a guy that threw for 100 yards in the Rose Bowl. Herbert would be an option in the 3rd or 4th rounder as a solid back up for Jameis.

Also, we need to bring back both Barrett and JPP and I think the ownership will do exactly that.

  12. Tackleblockwin Says:

DLine for sure in the first. Just gotta see how free agency pans out first before we decide on DE or DT imo.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

Agree with Bucs Guy. DT is a greater need than DE. We should re-sign Nassib, JPP and Shaq. Let Suh walk and draft a solid DT with the first pick. I would also be ok with a Right Tackle or a running back.

  14. T REX Says:

CARSON PALMER ONLY THREW LESS TDs IN YEAR 2 OF ARIANS OFFENSE BECAUSE HE ONLY PLAYED IN 6 GAMES!

    DO NOT BELIEVE THE LIES!

    WINSTON PROPAGANDA!

    WINSTON SUCKS!

  15. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Right Tackle, Running Back, Pass Rush, in any order depending on who’s there when we pick.

  16. adam from ny Says:

i hear the rams want suh back next to donald

  17. DayOnePaul Says:

Watch the DE out of Penn State. Great story, production, size, quicks, length, family, coaching. If I could only pronounce his name.

  18. JP_09 Says:

You know what Herbert didn’t do in the Rose bowl, cost his team the game…. like Winston did 6 times this year, yes your “franchise QB” was directly responsible for 6 of the Bucs 9 losses

  19. alaskabuc Says:

I’m always ok with adding young pass rushers early in the draft, but I’m sticking with banging the drum for Grant Delpit, this kid is going to be elite.

  20. unbelievable Says:

    Injury prone… meh.

I agree about never having enough edge rushers though. But we need o-lineman too. Unless you want to spend another season crying about a bad run game and too many QB sacks…

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ll keep sayin what I’ve been sayin ever since I have been commented on Joe’s website…till the cows come home.. Make this Defense great again and we will be close to or win a championship. We forgot our calling card once we won a superbowl. Besides, If we keep Jameis we will need a top 5 Defense.

  22. J Says:

Read a good article about Shaq Lawson and I like the idea of possibly going after him in FA. Lawson has got quite a bit of upside imo and would fit right in with Bowles scheme and we could most likely get him cheap.

  23. lowercaseg Says:

lmao unless its with a 3rd-5th rd pick, HARD PASS

  24. Aaron Says:

I’d rather go with an OT that can play right tackle for a year than move them to left tackle when Smith’s guaranteed money is done. We’ve got to be able to groom players so that we are not always over paying for average players in FA.

GO Bucs! going to be a fun off-season.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … Perfectly put. All options are on the table starting right now.

I too see OT, DT/DE & RB as our Top-3 picks. The order should be determined based on Best Available in those positions, with the exception that in no way should we draft a RB in the 1st Round IMO (plenty of quality RBs to be found in Rounds 2 & 3 every year). That’s predicated though on re-signing JPP, Suh, Barrett and Nassib. If any of the 4 doesn’t get re-signed, that’ll certainly influence the priorities.

Marine Buc … Letting Suh walk would be a major mistake IMO. Vea isn’t the driving force that he is (not yet at least), and a rookie DT isn’t gonna have Suh’s ‘savvy ways’. Besides that, our other DT, Allen, is also a UFA. Drafting a rookie DT to fill his spot makes sense (providing we keep Suh).

  26. Ocala Says:

The Bucs need to stick with improving the line. Huge need at right tackle.

  27. stravenite Says:

    What about – Another QB

Weakest link in the team, wins not stats !

  28. DaBux Says:

OT or if we do go OLB/Edge give me the kid from LSU:

    #18 K’Lavon Chaisson

    Dude is a monster.

  29. Hodad Says:

Herbert made clutch first down throws to salt the Rose Bowl away. Jameis threw a pick six in OT first play to end the season. Jameis doesn’t have the clutch gene, he has the choke gene. Haven’t we seen enough? He’s not clutch, he’s a choker.

  30. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

Six sacks in ten games =”unstoppable?”
Maybe I need a new dictionary.

  31. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    Bring back the known guys…

  32. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

I’d rather get RB, QB, or DB… fill the immediate need… Bucs aren’t stable enough yet to draft best player available in hopes of a future that never comes.

  33. Chris l Says:

Only draft linemen on both sides of the ball. Load up. Sandwich a qb in there and we can start going. We need a consistent pass rush and not rely on older players. Need to do what the eagles did. And no Jason, don’t go signing those free agents from eagles again!

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’ve been reading posters here and some of them are making a lot of sense.

Agree with TBBF and DR as usual.

LUV has the most intriguing idea. We re-sign JW and then trade him to the Dolphins for two of their gazillion top two round draft picks. LUV can tell you which..I just know they have a boatload so two picks to us won’t damage their draft if they get their QB in the deal. IF JW is actually that much better than Fitz as all our posters suggest.

BTW….despite my rep as a weak minded hater…I’d love to see JW blow up in Miami..as Sheryl Crow sang…”A change will do you good.” IMHO for both parties..the Bucs and JW who has bad juju as one poster said.

Grab the best available retread…hope he morphs into Rich Gannon and select the future with one of those second round picks…we’d have two…plus two first round picks.

We could than draft the edge rusher of Joe’s dreams…the best OL available…and start adding some depth.

  35. DoooshLaRue Says:

Joe is just compiling his Edge rusher wishlist early.
He’ll soon settle in on one or two players and decide on which beastly pics to attach with each article.
Joe will then barrage us daily until the draft with his annual man crush and then
    ……………….

Jason Licht will select a CB from Northern Idaho Tech with our first round pick.

Joe will then smash his TV screen, kick his neighbor’s dog and then head off to Abe’s place to cool off with some tasty wings and his beloved Bud Light!

    Hang in there Joe!

  36. Mr Magoo Says:

I’d rather VV have some help inside with Javon Kinlaw 6-6 302 4.94e South Carolina

  37. Old School Athlete Says:

It wouldn’t matter if we had Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. If we don’t protect the football, we will remain perennial losers.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So far, we have had calls for “another” almost everything…..too many to mention so I’ll lay our what we haven’t had calls for thus far….

MLB, WR & LG & Long Snapper…….that’s about it folks…

  39. Bucsfan951 Says:

Positions on both sides of the line can be addressed if Licht can work his magic and trade back likes he’s done so many times in the past. Now if he can just stop picking defensive backs and kickers haha

  40. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’d be happy with a edge rusher in the 1st. Should be some good ones available.

Carson Palmer played 5 years in Arizona. You know we can look this stuff up, right? https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/P/PalmCa00.htm

  41. Pewter power Says:

True you cant have enough pass rushers like the Joe’s were predicting doom last year after the draft

I’d rather not have a 14ht overall pick coming off the bench if we resign both so o line or quarterback please

  42. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JOE

“You know we can look this stuff up, right?”

I’ve frequently had that thought myself.’

Where in Michigan Joe? I spend summers on the UP in Copper Harbor.
I suspect you are a troll. I should explain to others that is not an insult…it’s something that UPER’s have called those on the LP forever. They call them that because they “live under the bridge”….that is to say south of the Mackinac bridge.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Think the Bucs gotta get whichever player can have the biggest impact to improve this team. It could be a RB or a Safety maybe a Tackle or even a G. Could be a passrusher too…….but I think the other positions could have bigger impacts with the way our roster is setup(considering we keep all our key FAs).

  44. Joe in Michigan Says:

Gross-Matos, Epenesa, and my dark horse is Chuck Weaver of Boise State.

Glad to hear you enjoy Michigan summers.

    BINGO!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  46. SC Bucs Fan Says:

There will never be a draft Joe doesn’t want an edge rusher in the first and if we don’t take one he will complain about it all year

  47. Buczilla Says:

I’m cool with an edge rusher with our first round pick, just not this edge rusher. He’s been battling injuries the last two years? Pass. If he’s banged up in college, theres a great chance that he’ll be the same way in the pros. I’ll take someone slightly less talented who has little to no serious injuries in their past.

  48. gotbbucs Says:

    Grant Delpit or Isaiah Simmons

  49. T REX Says:

Joe, how many games did Palmer play in his 2nd year bud?

    Six.

LOL. I’m just pointing out the BS narrative that all QBs have this magical leap in year 2 baloney.

Stay in Michigan bud. We don’t want any Winston lovers down here. Trying to get rid of them all.

  50. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

T Rex are you going to jump ship and root for someone else when Jameis leads us to the playoffs next year??? So Jameis is responsible for 6 losses??? I am sure you are pinning that ATL game on him even though it should have been long over in regulation if our kicker had one of his three very makeable kicks. Giants game was on him as well. New Orleans was just the better team. TN we should have won if the refs hadn’t cost us a defensive TD by whistling a fumble dead even though it was obvious it was a fumble. Seattle Jameis certainly did enough to win the game but the defense was a sieve and couldn’t make a single stop in OT. So that leaves 3 games bud, but you just let your hatred blind from the real reasons the team finds ways to lose and blame it all on Jameis.

  51. Craig Says:

Delpit, Delpit, Delpit. First round Bucs pick. Will bolster the secondary, is a great blitzer, and can cover like a cornerback.

Besides, Lewis gets hurt too much and for too long.

    49ers 2:10 left pic 6

Ten 3 possessions with 6 minutes 0 points down by 4

    Hou int 1:31 left

    Atl pick 6 in OT

Car 6 TOs (throws 4th int with 2:31, down 11, last INT was a desperation throw no time left) two horrible back to back fumbles in the red zone, one would be recovered by Car with 2 minutes left in the half down 10

NO 4 INTs 5:19 left in the game down by 10 pic 6, 2:52 left down 17 @ NO throws pic.

A true Franchise QB should be able to overcome your rookie kickers deficiencies when he still has a chance. Yet as you can see in three games,49ers, Hou, Atl with everything that went wrong in those 3 weather it was Gay, Winston, the D or whoever you want to blame, Winston still had a chance to either tie or win the game he failed miserably in those 3. As you can also see the Tenn game we were down 4 points and with three possessions he was unable to take his team down the field and score of course the Car and NO games mentioned above weren’t his fault lol only a total of 10 turnovers from him those games. So yes Gay and the secondary had their problems, but your Franchise QB should be able to bail out your rookies when they F up

  54. JP_09 Says:

Also, I do agree the Seattle and NY games he put his team in position to win, NY directly Gays fault, and Sea he tied the game and forced OT, also not his fault. But as I said 6 games were his fault

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2020 Draft Pick
    • A.J. Epenesa, Iowa, Strong-Side Defensive End

I doubt it – But hopefully he still falls to us.

  56. T REX Says:

TDTB – LOL. Jameis isn’t leading anybody anywhere with those turnovers. But let me guess…you’re going to use your crystal to suddenly make him smarter? LOL. Stanford my behind. Dude is football stupid but damn…he can sling it though.

Even Michael Clayton said we aren’t winning a Super Bowl with Winston and he’s the biggest Winston homer in the universe.

Arians isn’t Jesus. No miracles here.

Ditch the soon to be biggest loser in franchise history. Eat your L’s!

    BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  57. TDTB Says:

    Kinlaw, Kinlaw, Kinlaw

  58. MadMax Says:

Careful with wanting Kinlaw…..his weight can blow up fast if he allows, just naturally a big guy. Im a Gamecock and I see a lot of bust potential with him as a first. Ive seen some new mocks that have him going in the 2nd.

  59. MadMax Says:

Yeah, Curtis Weaver of Boise st. is in my notes….if we need another DE, thats my choice, probably late 2nd. But we have too many other needs…and none of them pass rush if we bring our D stars back.

  60. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

They went 7-9 this year. Two losses were solely on the kicker. If the refs were competent they don’t whistle the ball dead on a fumble they are 10-6 with Winston having by far his worst turnover year to date. If he gets back to his norm in the 15 or so range next year why won’t they be in the playoffs. Hell they should have been in this year. The defense is improving, the offense is humming without a running game which will hopefully be addressed in the offseason. Last year I predicted 3 wins and was way off. I am not just being a homer when I think they could easily win 10-11 games next year as that young secondary keeps maturing.

  61. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

But you want to bring in Nick Foles or Jalen Hurts instead and think that will improve our chances of winning.

  62. Big_Buc$ Says:

You have to go with the best OL or DL at 14. Tampa has to build up the trenches. I would consider the best pass rusher on the board at 14 to be groomed by JPP if he comes back on a short term deal. I think you have to get younger in the trenches. As for the guy that is mentioned not at 14 with injuries.

  63. stpetebucsfan Says:

First this debate about who lost which game is getting a bit tired. As DR constantly points out it’s a TEAM sport.

JW made four times what Josh Allen earned to lead the Bills to the playoffs.

If you’re going to hit the cap for 25 million it can’t be for a choker!

Did JW lose those games or did the team…or the kicker…or lack of a running back or just bad breaks.

Bottom line…NO one player actually loses a game but there are some accepted shibboleths that I’ve watched for decades. QB’s ALWAYS get too much credit and too much blame but they touch the ball more than any other player. They make the big$$$ Hence the high expectations.

Generally speaking though the guy who gets credit or blame is the guy who made the last play. If a kicker misses at the end…he will get the blame…if a QB misses a play at the end HE will get the blame. Bill Buckner was a GREAT player but what play do we remember him for, of all players VHG “won” a game with a defensive stop….it was the last play and so that’s how it’s perceived.

So charge Gay for the Giants but Gay DID NOT lose the Atlanta game. It was very winnable when JW got the ball…Russell Wilson wins those games as do many other “money” QB’s.

JW is a choker. Look at his record. He is the opposite of being money. I do not doubt he has enough talent with this newly improved defense to win ten maybe eleven games and reach the playoffs. That’s when his jersey collar gets really tight. Does anybody here really believe Jameis freaking Winston could actually keep it together through three or four playoff games and get us to the big show?

  64. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    A Real Good Defense
    A Decent Rushing Attack
    Manage Your Turnovers

You can still make it to the playoffs – aint nothing changed.
Just ask Josh Allen & The Buffalo Bills

  65. donuts Says:

Amen…..LUVMYBUCS. We dont need 30 TDs or 30 INTs to be in the playoffs. Giving the other team 100 points is sit-at-home football.

  66. Doctor_Berto Says:

Gotta take o line unless Derrick brown or delpit are available. Imagine Bowles defense if he has delpit to play around with. Then take oline second third round.

  67. J Says:

Greenard in round 2 ideally 3

  68. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

StPete Gay missed 3 field goals and left 9 points out there on the field. Yeah whatever though, it is Jameis’ fault that we didn’t win that game by 3, 6, or 9 points. You actually can blame a single person for a loss. Jameis led the offense into scoring position 3 times that game and every single time Gay let the team down. It never should have gotten to a point where Jameis needed to lead the team to a FOURTH scoring opportunity in overtime. You blame Jameis for the loss and act like Gay was a bit player in the outcome. GTFO! Oh, by the way, this conversation started because T Rex blamed Jameis for six losses. The JW bashers blame him for the overwhelming majority of the Bucs losses and don’t mention all the other reasons we lost and that it was a team effort.

  69. FireJasonLicht Says:

No thank you Alabama players are trash pros
