WRs Growth Will Help

December 24th, 2019

Improvement expected.

In his weekly sitdown with Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians lamented plays left on the field Saturday that otherwise would have won the game for the Bucs.

Arians said he counted three deep balls that were just a hair off that could have turned the game around. And Arians didn’t deny that had injured star receivers Mike Evans or stud Chris Godwin been on the field, those plays may have been made.

Instead, Arians and the Bucs had to rely on dudes that were baseball players or who never played college football to shine against a division champion like the Texans.

Another week of practicing with Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston and things should be fine, Arians believes.

“The guys that stepped in were in position,” Arians said. “We can grow their role a bit more this week and they should have a little more confidence.”

Now Joe would like to know if Arians has confidence Jameis won’t throw another pick to start the game. It’s become his signature play?

With Evans and Godwin the Bucs had the firepower to come back from Jameis’ handouts on the opening drive. Last week we noticed that without Evans and Godwin, the Bucs didn’t quite have enough firepower to climb out of the hole.

Darrell Henderson rushed for 147 yards and now goes on IR. If you are a poster who annointed him Barry Sanders step up and take a bow.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not 1 hole…..multiple holes……and it was not our WRs that didn’t bail us out….it was our experienced TEs…..

I’ve been a Jameis supporter but I must say, I’ve never seen so many articles trying to find other reasons why we lost that game…..it was 4 interceptions, pure and simple.
Not defense, not Oline, not RBs, not WRs, not TEs….not kicking….not special teams…..it was, unfortunately Jameis.

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

If we would have had our receivers, we would have beat the Texans.

  4. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @TBBF, well said.

Our TEs sucked. But Jameis, that is just who he is and always will be. When he is on, and that is NOT game to game, but moment to moment, he is as good as any QB there is. That is how the Bucs tied the game at the half; Jameis is the reason the Bucs can win without a running game, without a good defense, he is the one who makes Perriman have a career year, gets Hump the great contract, etc.

Then there is BAD Jameis, who can also loose a game all by his lonesome. The game against the Texans is a perfect example of who Jameis is. Forget about the first 3 INTs. We have 90 seconds left in the game, down by 3 and we are marching down the field, HOW do you not take better care of the football?! Like most of Jameis’ INTs, it was a CARELESS throw

  5. Hodad Says:

Yeah the wide receivers need to grow up fast, because Jameis never will. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Funny how BA calls out every player that messes up even pulling them from games, but Jameis gets a hall pass for every blunder. That must sit well in the locker room. We forget it isn’t only the young receivers who are at fault, BA was quick to point out when he thought our starters were to blame for some of Jameis’s picks. If this was the first time JW had a game like this it would make sense to blame the young guys, but most of us know who’s to blame for JW’s picks.

  6. Sport Says:

BA has been dropping plenty of shade on JW, it’s just extremely well crafted.

BA ‘the guys were in position, there role will be expanded’. That means the QB had guys open and didn’t hit them. Stop with the best makes excuses’ crap. Nearly every week BA has been critical of JW.

I thought JW was the savior and elevates all the players around him. Unfortunately, we need heroics from the entire team because of JW’s liabilities.

He sure as hell isnt throwing picks because of a poor defense. This game proves you excuse makers wrong on that point. Next up for you is run game. It’s your last stronghold. Once that is eliminated next year with draft and offseason, JW will be out of excuses and he has a 50/50 of getting benched and launched from this team.

    In BA I Trust!

    i agree….

my buddy loves FSU and JW and according to him and a few other buddies that like FSU, 2 things and 2 things only cost us the game: not running the ball and brate dropping a pass…..lol…

i cant even talk to them after a lost when its obvious who lost the game because its never JWs fault…..they blame everyone else…..

i told them, JW threw a pick6, texans had 4 extra possessions and we lost by 3points…….lol….but yeah, blame brate, the oline, BL and the run game….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  8. Rayjay1122 Says:

Well Bruce, IF you have your WRs stretch before games and they don’t sustain non contact injuries then maybe this isn’t even an issue??? Just saying….

  9. Rayjay1122 Says:

Good experience in the garbage time of the season though for guys like Watson.

  10. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Senor, Jameis has also led the team down the field to either tie the game or take the lead several times this year only to have the defense/kicker cost us the game. Yes he lost the game for us this time but he has several times put us in position to win only for others to let the team down. Mistakes happen. The bigger issue is his interceptions. They are getting out of hand and I’m not sure they are doing anything to try and correct that.

  11. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Mike Evans is growing old waiting for Jameis to grow into a winning QB

  12. Isaac haggins Says:

The defenses have this offense scouted and scripted the first two drives !!! Lefty and Arians need to let Winston call the first two drives at the line and NO freakin 25 yard out route passes for 5 yard gains !!! Quit telling Winston to trust the route , it clearly appears this is the word on these routes that every D since game 4 has been sitting on !!! # 2 .quicker dumps to the back if the lb are going to drop into the old Winston college weakness . Winston has always been prone to missing lb dropping out and filling the crossing route throwing lane . Simple pass to the back quickly , problem solved !!

  13. Chris l Says:

Most teams don’t climb out of a 4 interception 6 turnover total kind of day. Not even he greatest show on turf.

  14. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @Im Tired,

totally agree. That was my point. He is definitely capable of putting the team on his back, and equally adept at “giving” away the game. Equally parts of incredibly talented and a disaster waiting to happen. I have been supporting Jameis forever bc of that talent, but in his 5th year, and his 15th game this year, THIS is who Jameis is.

  15. Proudbucsfan Says:

Tom Brady is a free agent at the end of this season. I bet if we could get him with the weapons this team will have next year he could bring us a super bowl.
He is the only one IMO that we could dump Jameis for. Wishful thinking 😁

  16. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @Chris,

That is exactly right. That is both the enormous talent of Jameis and how destructive he can be, all in the same game

  17. Dapostman Says:

This Arian’s Leftwich offense keeps trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. They take what you have available and try to fit it to their scheme instead of scheming to the strengths of what is available. This was the exact same gameplan we have seen all season with less talent available.

Rojo should have had at least 8+ catches Saturday. Screens, swings, dumpoffs it doesn’t matter. The only player on offense who is better than RoJo is Perriman. All others take a back seat. Winston is as much to blame as these two genius coaches though.

Obviously they don’t understand the risk/reward relationship.

  18. Nptbuc Says:

How many times does it have to said? Winston had receivers OPEN on the majority of his passes! It had zero to do with WHO the receivers were. They were open and Winston over threw them or hit them in the hands and they dropped it. Two guys off the street made great plays, Hyman and Cody what’s his name. It would have been nice to have Evans and Godwin but their not playing didn’t loose the game for us. Jameis lost the game. Stop with all the damn excuses. Our receivers were available. Jameis couldn’t get it done. End of story.

    ____________

You have ZERO clue what you’re talking about. Stretching BEFORE games is exactly what gets people hurt. Haven’t you heard? This info is 20+ years old now. Static stretching BEFORE athletic performance not only leads to more injuries but also measurably diminishes athletic performance. There are three reasons for soft tissue injuries in athletics. 1) performing athletic tasks without having increased core muscle temperature 2) overuse of muscles either overly fatigued or not recovered 3) muscle trauma.

Not having “stretched” is NOT among those reasons. Please refrain from providing your two cents when you obviously have no clue of the subject you are attempting to talk about.

    _________

Actually, both the first and last INTs were the result of the receivers not winning their one on ones. They were running out routes. It is a timing pass. The receiver must sell the route going one way and cut out. The ball was there on time but the DB was there as well. Any QB could’ve made those same exact throws (Peyton Manning in the SB against Saints comes to mind). The DBs guessed right and made the play. Part of this is on the receiver, part is on BL for not running double moves more often, and part is on Winston for throwing the out against press man coverage.

  21. Brandon Says:

BTW, you say, “zero to do with WHO the receivers were. They were open and Winston over threw them or hit them in the hands and they dropped it.”

It was in their hands and they dropped it and it doesn’t matter who the receivers were? Strange logic.

  22. Owlykat Says:

Don’t forget our kicker missed a field goal which would have resulted in a tie game. The overthrows were likely due to the wind carrying the throws too long. Their QB had some wind problems too. We had a TE catch a long pass at the end zone but it wasn’t Brate or Howard, both of which played poorly in this game.

  23. scot pederson Says:

The Overthrows were more than a Hair and none of our hurt WRs would have caught up to them. Stop making excuses.

The Texans also had injuries. Will Fuller was gimpy for a half and gone for half #2. D. Watson was gimpy for a huge part of the game and was just not himself.

Bottom line we were at home vs a Playoff team and our QB was exposed like he always is vs the better teams. No modern teams of the last 15 years have made the playoffs or gone far into the playoffs by throwing 20, 25 or 30 Picks. NONE!!!
