“There’s No Way Jon Would Trust Jameis Winston”

December 16th, 2019

Lurking in the shadows could be another football team ready and yearning to pay America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, a fortune of cash to lead their club.

Former Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms acknowledged that on PFT Live today. However, Simms insisted that team would not be the Oakland Raiders, who are led by Chucky, the Bucs’ Super Bowl head coach and Simms’ former taskmaster in Tampa.

“There’s no way Jon would trust Jameis Winston. I just don’t see that happening. I don’t,” Simms said.

Simms’ take was rather ironic considering so many Bucs fans wanted Chucky to take over for Dirk Koetter after the 2017 season.

Joe already can hear Jameis fans saying Simms doesn’t like Chucky or Jameis. Well, that take would be inaccurate.

A couple of years ago at the spring NFL Owners Meetings, Chucky actually sought Simms’ help in trimming his large playbook to better serve the modern player. And Simms has long been a fair critic of Jameis and he was all for the Bucs drafting him.

Simms described Jameis’ performance against Lions yesterday as a statement game and Simms expects Jameis to return to the Bucs in 2020 on a one- or two-year contract.

As for Chucky, well, his Raiders (6-8) are imploding fast and close with road games at the Chargers and Broncos.

The Bucs face the Raiders in Vegas next season, and Joe has a hunch that game will be in Week 1 on Monday Night Football.

    What a weird hunch.

  2. TexBuc Says:

As i big Winston fan I know Chucky would not last a whole game without a heart attack with Winston as his QB.

  3. danr Says:

This is more a comment on Chucky’s lack of trust in QB’s than to a problem with Jameis. It’s just a combination of Chucky’s personal quirk matching VERY well with Jameis’s particular weakness.

  4. mike Says:

Dang… week one mnf would be sweet! I wonder where Carr goes? Does Gruden bring in Rivers?

  6. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

As thankful as I am for the SB Gruden got out of an aging team with a closing “window”, I’m glad he didn’t return to Tampa. It just didn’t feel “right”. Davis’s boy band crush along with his “unfinished business” with the Raiders did, however. They may lose out to finish the season.

  7. 813bucboi Says:

i think gruden would love the “dawg” in JW…..

    but all those TO’s……idk…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  8. mark2001 Says:

Sounds like Spencer Snell is being resigned. Here is your chance, kid, to prove to Arians that you don’t have to be a giant to play in this league.

  9. Uncle Says:

Gruden suffered through Simms and Gradkowski, hell yes he would love to work with a QB as talented as Jaboo.

  10. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Kirwin just said Jameis’ camp is making demands that he would never go for. I wonder where he heard that. Joe, can you find out?

  11. Tbbucs3 Says:

Chris Simms is so insecure about his subpar playing career and he takes out JW as if Gruden trusted him at QB. Based on the amount of times he got chewed out I’m assuming not.

  12. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Only dumb fans wanted Gruden back here

Coaches away from the game for a long period usually aren’t a success coming back

MNF week 1 would be spectacular in Vegas

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Question: If someone offers Jameis a better deal is he free to leave? And if we franchise him can he deny it and sign with someone else?

  14. Rod Munch Says:

I’m going back to last week when, on 4th and goal, to end the game, Derek Carr throws the ball out of bounds.

Would Winston ever give up on a play like that – just chuck it out of bounds to avoid an INT on his stat sheet?

Gruden HATES Carr, he hates him. If you don’t think Gruden thinks he can “fix” the NFL’s top passer, you’re nuts. Finally, in his short game west coast offense with a good running game, turnoverns wouldn’t be as big of an issue.

Anywho, going back to Gruden, he HATES Carr. Why? Because Carr plays scared and he’s a west coast cupcake who thinks words hurt. Gruden could coach Winston hard knowing Winston isn’t going to have a mental breakdown.

If Winston was to hit the market, I think Gruden would make a huge run at him. I mean would he go after Dalton or Eli instead? Plus we know for a fact he hates rookie QBs, so I can’t see him going that route either.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Dewey – If Winston is franchised, he can sign somewhere else, but they’d have to give up two 1st rounders. BUT the Bucs can simply refuse the two 1sts and match the offer.

  16. Buc believer Says:

Yes take the word of a guy who the only thing he did on the football field was survive a game. Dude sucked as our QB and he sucks as an analyst.

  17. Robert Says:

season is over, JW plays like Manning. seems like years ago…….

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

Thanks Rod. If the Bucs don’t franchise him and offer a 2 or 3 year deal can he refuse and move on? And if so do we get and draft picks?

  19. Adrnagy Says:

Gruden was a turnaround in the Bucs franchise from defense to offense. He got the job done along with two 1rd and more picks. From there … it has been offense oriented team and a long road to recovery. Now the task on hand is to keep the offense we have and keep building a complete team.

Gruden probably wouldn’t trust jameis. And jameis will be living hell under Gruden.

  20. Anonymous Says:

Gruden will implode the Raiders just like Tony Dungy’s ready made for him super bowl team.

  21. Licht Headed Says:

Mr. Jump-the-Shark has his own major problems.

  22. VegasBuc Says:

That’ll be the first game I attend at the new Allegiant Stadium. Literally 10 minutes from my driveway. #AllInJameis2020

  23. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Gruden liked Favre and almost got him here. There are similarities between Favre and Winston. I think Gruden and Winston would fit. I truly don’t think Winston is leaving though. As far as opening in Vegas, I hope not. I wouldn’t want the Bucs to have to battle the energy of opening a new stadium on the road week 1.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

It’s sounding like we might get forced to franchise Jameis unless we can come to terms on a long-term deal.

One things for sure. The fans who thought we could sign him for under 20M were living in a dream land.

My hope is you sign him long term whatever it takes. Do it now and you might be glad you did once a new CBA hit which could change the landscape and negotiating power.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Dewey – If the Bucs don’t sign him and don’t franchise him, he can do whatever he wants. In theory the Bucs could get a 3rd rounder for him signing elsewhere, but keep in mind that’s if the Bucs didn’t sign people of value in FA. Also keep in mind that it’s a bottom of the 3rd pick, or a top of the 4th round pick.

The Bucs will almost certainly try to get a new deal done, probably a bridge one, and if they can’t, they’ll franchise him. Complicating matters is keeping Shaq, who ideally the Bucs would franchise to see if he can repeat this year – and if so they lock him up long term.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Yes Dewey. Our only true power to keep Winston is the franchise tag. Even then Winston could get out of Tampa by sitting out the year(which I doubt would happen). Other then the franchise tag he is not obligated to sign any deal we offer.

  27. Dewey Selmon Says:

Thank you guys. Jameis seems to like it here, hard to imagine him in another uniform.

  28. Robert Says:

    you ladies are such suckers………

  29. 1sparkybuc Says:

Gruden makes a great OC. As a HC, he wastes talent when he has it, and doesn’t know it when he sees it. Prime example was passing on Aaron Rodgers in the draft. Big issue with the Bucs was lying to his players. Guys need to be able to trust what a coach says. So relieved he went back to Oakland. No Monte to lead the defense anyway.

  30. doolnutts Says:

Trust is earned. If Bruce Arian’s trusted Winston a deal would have been done already. I think the bucs are taking the right approach, I also think at times like yesterdays game Winston has looked outstanding but there are far too many other times where he has not. I think Winston played himself out of a 100 million dollar deal BUT that is a great benefit for us. I think we get him locked in on a 3 year deal or so unless he isn’t willing to take a short contract in which we just tag him for 1. Either way I think Winston is back at least 1 more year.

  31. ir8oldman Says:

Whatever happened to the dude with sheep and the enormous amount of exclamation points? (The real sheep will know!!!!) Or something to that effect.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

1sparkybuc – I’m not a fan of Gruden, but I actually think he’s a much better HC than OC, as a OC he’s very mediocre. He is someone that gets his players to buy in, which is a big part of being a HC, just look at that Oakland team that I literally heard people saying wouldn’t win more than 1 game this year – and I think the line was 4 games.

The issue in Tampa was he didn’t want to work with Rich McKay and went to the Glazers and threw a fit after McKay refused to sign an old washed up Andre Rison who couldn’t break a 5.0/40. Gruden then got his hand picked stooge Bruce Allen to run the team into the ground. Gruden chased off Lynch and Sapp, claiming it was about the “salary cap” but found tens of millions for Charlie Garner, Tim Brown, Ion Gold, Ellis Wyms, and every washed up and injured mid-30s offensive lineman in the country.

Had Gruden not chased off Rich McKay, history would be very different I believe. Instead Gruden tore the Bucs down to rebuild them in his image – and his image is a scary Chucky doll.

  33. bojim Says:

So he liked Carr and not Jameis. Now it might be the other way around? Gruden’s a dick. Always has been.

  34. Joe Says:

    What a weird hunch.

Not weird at all — in fact it’s rather logical. Provided you think like a TV suit.

How best to build drama and sell a game than a brand new stadium in Vegas and Chucky, who is is a marquee coach, playing against the team he won a Super Bowl for and his former hometown? You know: Storylines.

(TV suits know full well they will get football fans to watch. But it is the ancillary football fan or non-football fan they are trying to attract to boost the eyeballs/ratings.)

Also, fair to suggest the TV suits, (no matter the network) would want a Raiders or Bucs game in prime time early as to avoid the risk the two teams stink and won’t have losing records after Oct 1.

You can bet some network (NBC or BSPN) would really want to broadcast the Raiders, an iconic NFL franchise with a celebrity coach, playing their first game in their new home in a state-of-the-art facility in a town that is popular throughout the nation — something two years ago no one ever dreamed they would live to see.

Also throw in the fact the Bucs will likely have a 5,000-yard passer (you know, Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback), it makes the pairing a delicious prime time matchup for the suits.

  35. Joe in Michigan Says:

Good, we’ll keep him here and Gruden can look for the next Brad or Rob Johnson.

  36. destinjohnny Says:

Who is the most accurate deep ball passer to come out of college in the last 10 years…..
    Thats who Chucky is drafting.

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Would anyone trust Jameis in Vegas?……

He’ll be fine staying in Tampa…

And, MNF opener with Bucs at Vegas?…….all we know is that we are playing the Raiders next year…..we don’t know if they are home or away. I would love it if that were one of our away games……that game sounds like a win already.
I want the Chiefs at home…….
The stadium will fill up with the Bears, Vikins or Packers playing at Ray Jay….

  38. ColBucFan Says:

    Ugh…Winston in Vegas again…

  39. Dewey Selmon Says:

TBBF. the schedule is out. home games. KC, LAC, Minn. GB. road games Oak, Den, Detroit, CHicago, and if we finish in 2nd we play 2 second place tam home/away. I forget what divisions they are but someone will chime in

  40. Alanbucsfan Says:

Jameis is staying in Tampa, but Jameis would be an upgrade over Carr.

  41. chris L Says:

joe it would make for a great monday nighter but i dont think it will be the first week. they usually have two and the first one is reserved for teams that play in ET or CT. the second game beginning at around 10pm ET is usually between two teams that are in the pacific time zone. would be crazy to have the bucs play at 10pm. if anything it would be the earlier one but i think they keep it fairly scripted by plotting either intra conference between AFC west and nfc west or those divisions

  42. Dapostman Says:

    TampaBayBucFan,

The Bucs played the Raiders in Tampa in 2016 so the next time they meet in 2020 it will be in Vegas. The template for 2020 is out. No dates and there are about 2 games still up in the air depending where you finish in your division.

    6 division games
    4 AFC West
    4 NFC North
    2 NFC games

  43. Stanglassman Says:

Who cares. Jameis will be a Buc for years to come.

How many years will it take for people to realize JG is a overrated coach. That chock job last night to close out their Oakland home was awful.

  44. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Thanks…..Googled the 2020 schedule and didn’t find it…..

A MNF opening with Gruden at Vegas would be good…..but still could be another team……would love it to be Bucs

  45. Gofortheface30 Says:

Kobe Faker – you’re such a weirdo. None of your posts make sense

  46. Howard Cosell Says:

    I agree with Munch.
    Gruden would love Jameis.
Howard would go so far as to say Gruden might go all K2 watching Winston highlites lolol.

That said Howard actually believes Winston when he says he wants to stay in Tampa….because Winston is a straight shooter.
However Howard would not be shocked at all if the glasers purposely screw this one up and ensure another decade of rot

  47. Smashsquatch Says:

I’m warming to the idea of bringing Winston back next year. He’s earned it with his play over the last couple of months. I still need to see him win meaningful games before I sign him long term. His career is littered with empty stats gobbled up after the game has been lost or the season is already long gone. Translation, when the stage is big and the stakes are high he craps the bed; conversely once the pressure is lifted he plays well. I’ll be rooting for him next year though. As he goes so do the Bucs and at this point it’s all but certain he’ll be a Buc next year.

  48. Jonny Says:

People are taking Simms’ evaluation of JW-Chucky situation too personally. I think Chris Simms is implying that JW is not the type of QB Chucky would want to work with, likely because of turnovers. I can see that as well. Would the greatest coach in NFL history want Jameis? I don’t think so. Teddy Bridgewater would be a Chucky or Belichick guy. Even Mariota for that matter. If Andy Reid were in the market for some reason, they would jump on Jameis. So would Bruce Arians if he was coaching a different team. Jameis is a superior version of Carson Palmer when BA revived his career. It hurts JW that he is already being coached by the same coach that took a chance on Palmer. Anyways, barring total meltdown JW is our guy for 2020 and I am happy for his late surge. Football Sundays have never been as entertaining as a bucs fan for me.

  49. Brandon Says:

Whatever Gruden thought of Brett Favre when he was on the Packers staff would probably sum up what he thinks of Winston. Favre had has many 20 INT seasons as he’s had 4000 yard seasons (six). He also had five seasons under a QB rating of 80. Not coincidentally, his worst seasons were when he didn’t have a top 10 defense or decent running game.

  50. Pit of Misery Says:

    Rod: 100% accurate.

  51. Licht Headed Says:

Winston’s not signing any 2-3 year deal. Bucs will franchise him or sign him to loaded multi-year contract.

  52. BucEmUp Says:

This would be the ONLY team and fanbase stupid enough to willingly WANT to get rid of Jameis.

  53. Joe Says:

    tampabaybucfan:

Bucs will play Raiders in Vegas in 2020. That’s been set for a couple of years.

  54. tnew Says:

Gruden will more likely chase Mariota. Gruden loves the reclamations as they give him a chance to show once again how great he is as a coach. He was looking for Gannon 2.0 the entire time in Tampa (Rob Johnson, Jake Plummer, Gradkowski) MM might work out for Gruden as he can make a really tight game plan with simple quick reads. Plus Gruden will commit to running.

Being said, I’ve heard the Simm’s take on the contract situation with Winston. He might’ve been correct a month ago but times have changed. He is starting to have more leverage. Winston puts up a solid performance with 3tds, 1Int and 300 yards vs Houston, his price tag will continue to rise.

  55. JimmyJack Says:

I feel like the rest of the league is circling and hunting our QB like a pack of hungry sharks.

This team has never had a good QB that they didn’t let get away. Front Office better get it done this time.

  56. Bob in Valrico Says:

Gannon, Garcia and Johnson were Gruden stereo type QB’s. Kind of similar to Charlie Garner, with the exception, that could still play.

  57. westernbuc Says:

Every fan, and outlet (ahem Pewter Report) that clamored for Gruden should sit in a cone of silence for 6 months

  58. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Of course Jon would not trust him:

    • Jon does not develop young QBs
    • Jon does not work well with young QBs
    • Jon does not trust ANY QB
    • Jon likes to date QBs, he doesn’t like to be married to them

  59. MadMax Says:

Lol, Gruden would take JW in a heartbeat……we better lock him up, time is running out….3 yrs 60 mill!

  60. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Rod Munch Says
The issue in Tampa was he didn’t want to work with Rich McKay and went to the Glazers and threw a fit after McKay refused to sign an old washed up Andre Rison who couldn’t break a 5.0/40. Gruden then got his hand picked stooge Bruce Allen to run the team into the ground.

That’s not exactly accurate. McKay sunk the team so deeply in cap issues that Allen had to go cheap for multiple years. Gruden wanted to spend more money that the team did not have. So they bargained draft picks instead (Gruden and McKay)

McKay made the decision to leave…claiming he and Gruden could not get along, which was true. But it was also true that McKay caused cap issues that were baf, and then he bailed rather than stick around and fix them.

This led to the ‘Glazers won’t spend!’ Claims…which should have been ‘the Glazers can’t spend’.

  61. SB Says:

WHO THE PUCK CARES WHAT GRUDEN THINKS????????
That is the real question to true Bucs fans

  62. TSmitty3000 Says:

IMO it doesn’t make sense to franchise Jameis. If you don’t think he’s the guy, let him walk. Don’t play around with the franchise tag and it would be cheaper franchising Barrett. Gruden doesn’t like the fact Carr is always checking down. Carr is also skiddish in the pocket.

What people are missing is Arians is the first good coach Jameis had since entering the league. Coaching matters as Jameis has improved. Yea he has thrown a crap load of picks, but leading in yards and 2nd in TD passes. BTW those aren’t garbage stats either.

  63. TSmitty3000 Says:

I forgot to add Simms is the same guy who said Baker, Trubisky, and Goff are better than Jameis. Ummmmm OK

  64. LaMarcus Says:

Jw needs 905 yards to break the record. I think they all should go for it.

  65. oxycondoms Says:

i’ve never been down on jameis when the majority were but now i feel like its getting out of hand with the hype of jameis lately. his performances as of late remind me of his performance against the saints a couple years ago on that last second game winning td to godwin. He’s beating teams that don’t really care and teams who are quite possibly tanking. he only deserves a 1 year deal

  66. Bucs4821 Says:

Yet, Gruden *loved* Brian Griese who seemed to be good for a pick-6 every other week 🙂

  67. Rod Munch Says:

Howard Cosell – Yeah, Winston isn’t going anywhere, was just responding to the idea that Gruden wouldn’t want him. It’s nonsense.

LaMarcus – Bucs are most likely down three receivers including two pro-bowl’ers. I’d love to see the Bucs try to break the passing record, but it’s incredibly unlikely due to the lack of receivers. BUT, Houston doesn’t have a good secondary – they’re down to playing VH3 quite a bit, I noticed that on Sunday. Also Winston has historically tore up the Falcons, he averages like 340 yards and 3 TDs a game versus them. So I’d expect the Texans to score a lot of points – and the Bucs will need to respond. Also the Falcons games are almost always high scoring. So while it’s incredibly unlikely Winston could keep up this insane pace, in particular without his top guys, it’s not 100% out of the question.

  68. TampaTown Says:

Weird hunch? Sounds like an inside scoop

  69. FortMyersDave Says:

I bet Chucky is not smiling like he just smoked a Bob Marleyesque blunt after his Raiders basically fell apart against the lowly Jags on Sunday to close out their stay at the Mausoleum although the refs did apologize for a bad call (I think the one that caused the clock to stop at 2:05 instead of running to the 2 minute warning.

  70. MTM Says:

Winston would put Gruden in an insane asylum. Gruden would be belting out one continuous F bomb.

  71. View from 132 Says:

WEEK ONE of Monday Night Football will be… the BUCS?? That is too funny. Gruden vs. the Bucs is a footnote in history to most football fans. That was a generation ago, and both teams immediately dissolved into irrelevance.

Vegas vs some modern star QB… Lamar, Mahomes, Russ Wilson… sure, I can see that. But you don’t open Vegas against the Bucs. That’s the craziest things I’ve ever seen posted here.

  72. Anonymous Says:

JOE per IRA rumors I believe

When the glazers tried to get Gruden he wanted Carr over Winston
