Takeaways = Confidence

December 3rd, 2019

Confidence building.

Yeah, football coaches will detail the importance of turnovers. Some (coughLovieSmithcough) take it to the absurd level and forget about having a decent team first.

But it isn’t just possessions that turnovers impact. Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians explained yesterday that defensive takeaways mentally build up defensive players.

Arians was asked about Devin White’s first interception and explained how it builds key confidence.

“It’s huge. Once you do it, you know you can,” Arians said. “Devin [White’s] sacks last week, the interception this week [and] the touchdown will be huge for him and his growth. … All those kids are getting more and more – I see Mike Edwards playing faster and faster. I hope to get Anthony Nelson healthy soon [and] let him get back out there.”

Joe is going to have to do research but it seems the turnaround of this secondary coincided with the benching (and subsequent release) of former first-round pick cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.

It seems a bit extreme to think one guy could have dragged down an entire unit so badly. With Hargreaves the secondary was awful. Without Hargreaves, first- and second-year defensive backs are getting picks and breakups.

Bucs fans cried about the draft and didn’t like anyone we selected. I believe our draft class now has more contributions than any other team

This is a primary reason why you dont take any football advice from Bucs fans. Seems when they think they know something it just blows up in their faces.

We have a better team than what our record says hopefully we keep stacking the wins.

Band of Brothers – 2018 & 2019 Defensive Draft Picks.

They are young. athletic and seem to be taking to this scheme and coaching staff.

    In BA I Trust!

    Turnovers build confidence you say?

Hmmmm…… I guess JayMiss made quite a few opponents VERY confident this season!

  5. Adrnagy Says:

It might be that driving white will be the guy who turn the culture around. When was it acouple if weeks ago when he said — we where drafted to fix and improve that’s why we are here —- from that game defense specially backend as played better.

  6. Plex Says:

When your “veteran leader” is hargreaves there is going to be problems. Your better off with a rookie who follows the coaches orders to the T then a injury prone cb who has yet to prove himself being a leader in your secondary.

  7. Deminion Says:

Feels good to not see Hargreaves trailing or behind a WR lol

It’s been 3 things all working together, IMO:

    1. JPP returning
    2. Vhbust and his victory celebrations after doing nothing are gone
    3. Jamal Dean getting way more playing time

Opposing QBs have an 108.6 passer rating when targeting VHbust this year… lol. Meanwhile Jamal Dean had more passes defended in hist first 2 games started, than Hargreaves has had all season (11 games started)

    *Jamel Dean, whoops

The fans have also hated a lot of Licht picks they were right about..i.e.

-VHIII over Tunsil or Rankins R1
-Roberto Aguayo over anyone that is a non kicker in R2
-Charles Sims over an OG in R3
-Donte Jackson / non slow CBs over MJ Stewart in R2

Most the fans have been OK with our 1st round picks other than being split on Josh Allen vs Devin White and being split on Dalvin Cook vs OJ Howard. So even the people with split opinons don’t look stupid since Cook & White have been great. Same with Derwin James vs Vita Vea.

I still maintain a JBF poll based draft would result in more hits vs misses than Jason Licht drafts.

you setting yourself up to eat major crow regarding VHG….lol…

im sure a W vs tampa will keep his name out your mouth just like GMC….before london you mentioned GMC every week…lol…not a peep after he got the W….

but i know….VHG sucked just like the rest of the 16 class….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Bruce Arians explained yesterday that defensive takeaways mentally build up defensive players.” I agree with BA that anything positive like takeaways builds confidence. But I also believe that the reverse is true … Giveaways hurt confidence. And multiple giveaways REALLY hurt confidence. Defenders know that when the offense makes a mess, they’re the ones who have to clean it up. Giveaways aren’t exactly confidence-builders for the defense.

Swaggy brought down the entire defense. Whose to say VH3 didn’t do the same to that young secondary?

  14. J Says:

Hargreaves wasn’t horrible in the Texans game against the Patriots, that’s for sure. But what drives me nuts is listening to idiots like Collinsworthless saying ” well he’s a 1st rounder, and I have no idea why Tampa would let him go”, really dude? Collinsworthless is a emmy award winning announcer but yet has no finger on the pulse around the league? F that guy! He’s not 100% stupid about the game but jackass comments like that should get him roasted by his peers, imo.

  16. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

I don’t doubt that releasing VHIII may have had a catalyst effect, but I would bet that the young guns were ready to break out anyway, which the coaches probably recognized, making Vernon’s release an easy decision.

    VHIII perfected the “chase” technique.

Seems like the fact that VHIII was plugged in to the nickel position in Houston, and nobody tried to sign him to start outside, would tell him something.

  19. Clw JB Says:

DWhite is coming along very, very nicely

VHIII was obviously a cancer, they are just being professional and not sharing with the public

There is ZERO chance you cut a #1 pick, mid season, while last in the league in passing and replace him with a rookie and a second year vet….

If you think there isn’t more to this story, keep watching CNN and be sure to vote for Bloomberg

  20. The Ghost of Leeman Bennett Says:

I was highly critical of Vita initially in his first year and he came on strong to finish his rookie year. Now it is obvious he is a good NFL defensive lineman. Because of that, I learned my lesson and saw DWhite struggling early but held my fire, and now he is coming on strong. It must be normal to take some time to adjust to the NFL.

  21. james Says:

VHIII was worried too much about his cred.
