Sapp Honors New Sack King
December 29th, 2019It was a cool moment in Bucs history.
Warren Sapp, the Hall of Fame tackle whose No. 99 will never be worn by a Bucs player again, was on the Bucs sidelines, hugging the white sideline stripe, sometimes standing right behind Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.
When the Bucs were on defense, Sapp was locked in. Cheering, clapping, hollering encouragement to the defense. Sometimes on third down, Sapp was waving his arms for the crowd to get loud.
Why was Sapp so involved? He honestly wanted to see his sack record fall.
Last week Shaq Barrett recorded sack No. 16.5 of the season, tying Sapp’s mark set in 2000 which is a franchise record.
More like was a franchise record.
With 9:23 left in the first half, Barrett sacked Matty Ice to raise his season total to 17.5. A new Bucs record.
Later, when Barrett came to the sideline, the first person to meet him was Sapp who greeted the soon-to-be free agent with open arms. Sapp gave Barrett a big ol’ bear hug and patted him on the helmet in appreciation and congratulations.
After the game, Barrett was so excited he didn’t really remember what Sapp said other than one word.
“Congratulations,” Barrett said Sapp told him — from what he can remember. Barrett was visibly humbled that a Hall of Famer from the Bucs would stand on the sidelines and cheer him on to beat his own record.
“He’s a cool guy,” Barrett said of Sapp.
Barrett would collect another two sacks to finish with 19.5.
The former sack king had just coronated the new king.
Long live the king!

December 29th, 2019 at 5:10 pm

December 29th, 2019 at 5:12 pm

December 29th, 2019 at 5:13 pm
That shirt that Sapp had on today had to have been one of the ugliest shirts I’ve ever seen in my life on TV
December 29th, 2019 at 5:14 pm
Long live the king!
Oh, I don’t know, I don’t think it would bother me too much if that record was broken next year
Hopefully, by Shaq himself!
December 29th, 2019 at 5:14 pm
What did Culpepper and McFarland think? They did the work for this dude.
December 29th, 2019 at 5:14 pm
Give Shaq and JPP Winston’s money and draft a qb, Guarantee he won’t throw 30 ints. 5,000 and 33 tds mean nothing. a 7-9 record
December 29th, 2019 at 5:15 pm
Woulda been a lot cooler if we had won. Right now I could care less.
December 29th, 2019 at 5:19 pm
It doesnt matter what you think about Sapp. 1 thing is clear, he loves the Bucs.
December 29th, 2019 at 5:22 pm
Sapp cares about a most bucs all time sacks by a bucs DT
December 29th, 2019 at 5:22 pm
Very happy to see this happen. He deserves a new contract and not a franchise tag. Put the tag on that clown that set an NFL first today.
December 29th, 2019 at 5:22 pm
I agree with Dewey 100%
December 29th, 2019 at 5:23 pm
If they keep Winston here should walk because there will be more games like today in store in the future.
December 29th, 2019 at 5:24 pm
Sapp cares abou being the bucs all time sac leader not a season …that record is for an end to break end like michael Bennett would of broke that too if we kept him long enuff
December 29th, 2019 at 6:11 pm
Sapps a POS
December 29th, 2019 at 6:13 pm
I care, and that was great!!! The “past” is honoring the future, and that’s pretty frickin’ cool! If you don’t get that, we’ll then move along…
December 29th, 2019 at 6:34 pm

Whatever anyone wants to say about Sapp, we don’t have a Lombardi trophy without him.
December 29th, 2019 at 8:57 pm
This is a fantastic story. Well done by Barrett, and great on Sapp to be their to honor him.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:13 pm
Wow. You actually made Sapp sound like a compassionate human being. You are a great writer!
December 30th, 2019 at 1:18 am
I was going to but FT some of u soooo called bucs fans r hot F’n garbage. Just please STFU! As for barrett congratulations young man n sapp was very honorable of u sir n thank u for all u did especially being part of our only Lombardi trophy
As for u whiny “fans” go do their job if u can do so much better 🤷♂️ Does it suck we had another losing season of course but we’re fans n sometimes u have long droughts when ur not one of the big name teams. Maybe one day but as for now like the past decade “maybe next year” n let the ppl that make the big bucks make the decisions cuz if any of us were better at it we’d be doing it instead of being Monday morning QBs n couch coaches. Till next year Go Bucs

Yay congrats all your hard work has paid off enjoy the rewards
December 30th, 2019 at 6:23 am
Glad Sapp was there at least to see his record go down.
Nothing against Shaq, but I sort of kinda wanted to see Sapp hold onto that top spot. But Shaq has been pretty consistent and everything added up.
