Sapp Honors New Sack King

December 29th, 2019

Salutes new record holder.

It was a cool moment in Bucs history.

Warren Sapp, the Hall of Fame tackle whose No. 99 will never be worn by a Bucs player again, was on the Bucs sidelines, hugging the white sideline stripe, sometimes standing right behind Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

When the Bucs were on defense, Sapp was locked in. Cheering, clapping, hollering encouragement to the defense. Sometimes on third down, Sapp was waving his arms for the crowd to get loud.

Why was Sapp so involved? He honestly wanted to see his sack record fall.

Last week Shaq Barrett recorded sack No. 16.5 of the season, tying Sapp’s mark set in 2000 which is a franchise record.

More like was a franchise record.

With 9:23 left in the first half, Barrett sacked Matty Ice to raise his season total to 17.5. A new Bucs record.

Later, when Barrett came to the sideline, the first person to meet him was Sapp who greeted the soon-to-be free agent with open arms. Sapp gave Barrett a big ol’ bear hug and patted him on the helmet in appreciation and congratulations.

After the game, Barrett was so excited he didn’t really remember what Sapp said other than one word.

“Congratulations,” Barrett said Sapp told him — from what he can remember. Barrett was visibly humbled that a Hall of Famer from the Bucs would stand on the sidelines and cheer him on to beat his own record.

“He’s a cool guy,” Barrett said of Sapp.

Barrett would collect another two sacks to finish with 19.5.

The former sack king had just coronated the new king.

Long live the king!

Oh, I don’t know, I don’t think it would bother me too much if that record was broken next year

Very happy to see this happen. He deserves a new contract and not a franchise tag. Put the tag on that clown that set an NFL first today.

  25. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

Wow. You actually made Sapp sound like a compassionate human being. You are a great writer!

  26. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

I was going to but FT some of u soooo called bucs fans r hot F’n garbage. Just please STFU! As for barrett congratulations young man n sapp was very honorable of u sir n thank u for all u did especially being part of our only Lombardi trophy
As for u whiny “fans” go do their job if u can do so much better 🤷‍♂️ Does it suck we had another losing season of course but we’re fans n sometimes u have long droughts when ur not one of the big name teams. Maybe one day but as for now like the past decade “maybe next year” n let the ppl that make the big bucks make the decisions cuz if any of us were better at it we’d be doing it instead of being Monday morning QBs n couch coaches. Till next year Go Bucs

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Glad Sapp was there at least to see his record go down.

Nothing against Shaq, but I sort of kinda wanted to see Sapp hold onto that top spot. But Shaq has been pretty consistent and everything added up.
