Jason Licht Talks “Overlooked” Sean Murphy-Bunting

December 1st, 2019

The Buccaneers general manager unknowingly played Nostradamus before today’s 28-11 clubbing of the Jaguars in Jacksonville.

During the official Bucs pregame radio show, GM Jason Licht was asked about emerging cornerbacks Jamel Dean and Carlton Davis clamping down on Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley last Sunday and was quick to mention that his other super-young corner is a man worthy of praise.

Licht noted that Dean and Davis had help but Murphy-Bunting didn’t.

“The play of Sean Murphy-Bunting gets a little overlooked,” Licht said, adding that Muprhy was on an island covering speedy young Falcons receiver Russell Gage. “That’s something that gets overlooked.”

Today, Murphy-Bunting won’t be overshadowed. His fourth-quarter interception with the Bucs leading 25-11 was a critical (very critical) play in the game. The Jaguars had the momentum and a TD there would have been a heck of a dagger.

That’s two picks this season for Murphy-Bunting, and each one certainly brings more confidence that is so critical for rookie defensive backs.

Lovin’ me some Buccaneers defense these last two games.

  2. Jean Lafitte Says:

    wtg SMB!

  3. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Just wish they would have showed up like this during the Giants game. This season would be really different.

  4. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Nice interception by SMB. His decision to run it out from the end zone, run it back into the end zone and out again – not so good.

Great play by Bunting to ice the game!!!! Loved the replay and how they showed Bunting read the route in front of him and attack the ball!!!

It was a smart football play and a credit to the coaching. We haven’t seen defenders aggressively attack balls like this in years past!! Todd Bowles defense had it’s growing pain but now lately is starting to click and we are seeing the potential!!

    Great game by the defense!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  6. Cobraboy Says:

Nice to see the DB’s start to come together in a meaningful way. Sure helps the overall defensive effort. Hard to criticize any of them in the last two games.

Maybe the D us finally beginning to click…

That goalline stop was amazing!! We have seen this defense make a few of these this year. We can expect to see it again too.

And that stand was seven plays!!! What a gutsy performance.

Our Middle Linebackers made it happen in mine opinion. Aside from the obvisous pass defends they made great reads on that stand and took away the options. In years past we don’t get that discipline and we give up the booty…….Again all the credit to White and LDV for doing their jobs at a high level but also a big credit to the coaching.

White hitting his potential today and was the MVP today if you ask me.

    GO BUCS!!

Yep, the rooks have to teeth a little bit before the canines come out.

I cant wait to see what we do next year….looks like DB position wont need to be addressed in the draft…..RT and Center should be our focus, especially if we bring back Barrett, JPP, and Suh!

Yeah that drive with SMB’s interception was AGAIN an absolute embarrassment of NFL officiating.

I saw 2 blocks in the back on Jags not called, intentional grounding by Minshew not called, and that ridiculous PI on LVD in the end zone in which he actually never even touched the Tight End when the dude slipped and fell trying to change his route.

    I am soooooo sick & tired of bull$hit officiating…
That’s the crap that changes momentum in games for Tampa.

That god SMB snagged that INT.
We deserved it after that joke of officiating on that drive.
It’s like they wanted Jags to come back and win the game.
    RIDICULOUS!!!

Licht draft picks last two years look like many can play and better than average.

Vea, Jones, Davis, Cappa, Whitehead, Cichy – 2018
White, Bunting, Dean, Edwards, Nelson, Gay – 2019

  11. bojim Says:

I think SMB got excited and saw a 101 yd int. return. I’m sure he learned. But YAY!!!

  12. Brandon Says:

Who drafted those young DBs? Winners of 3 of 4, I said before the game that these last few games were set up to go 3-2, 4-1, or better. This team is making huge strides on both sides of the ball. Anything worse than 8-8 would be a disappointment. Then we can go back to the terrible ref calls in the Tennessee and Seattle games as well as the missed chip shot against the Giants. This is a good team right now.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Geno excellent point. Last two drafts look great and are legitimately a good football team right now. We still have quality teams left on our schedule to proove this to the naysayers.

Does this mean Licht is not a dumbass?

  14. QUE589 Says:

Keep in mind Bucs beat 2 sorry teams past 2 weeks. Can’t get excited about that, if so mediocre culture will continue

  15. geno711 Says:

    @Madmax.

This next year is the strongest year for offensive lineman in years.

I am glad the Buc’s did not reach for Jonan Williams, Chris Lindstrom, Cody Ford and the like last year.

I would pick two in the first 4 rounds if that works out although it does not have to be in the 1st round.

  16. Show me the TDs Says:

The Joes’ BS “playing for the draft” looks pretty stupid right now!

  17. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Finally our DC has stopped with the 45% blitzing that goes no where putting our young defenders on islands on every play. They’re finally learning how to play professional football. We’re getting more pd’s, sacks and turn overs each game. Team as a whole is scoring on avg 28 points per game. Defense gives up avg of 13 pts a game since this improvement is a recipe for winning a lot of our games. Now of course our to’s and special teams leaving points on the field can derail that but the team proved they can still win with them when our defense plays better.

  18. unbelievable Says:

    Agreed about drafting o-line.

Need to get some more help on the D-line as well. Even if we’re able to somehow resign Barrett, Suh, JPP and Nassib (or even 3 of them), JPP and Suh are both over 30 and we’ll need their replacements sooner than later.

Plus you can never have enough solid depth. We’ve stayed relatively healthy this year as a team, but that’s not usually the case.

  19. richbucsfan Says:

Hitting on 10 picks in 2 straight drafts is pretty good.

No, he’s not. I’m glad I have some company in that regard. Bucs will win final 4 games. Watch the defense flower.

I only got to watch the first half but I remember him playing great coverage white on rice downfield to knock the ball away. Could be a young nice nickel CB for Bowels to teach that we’ve needed for a long time.
