Jason Licht Getting Props
December 2nd, 2019Bucs tight end O.J. Howard caught five passes yesterday and shared the team lead in catches with Breshad Perriman.
And for that, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht gets the props.
That’s the word from Albert Breer, who runs theMMQB.com site.
No, Breer is not giving credit to offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich or Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians or Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for getting Howard the ball.
Breer gives Licht credit, indirectly, for the catches because Breer noted how easy it would have been for Licht to pull the lever and get rid of Howard when he was struggling earlier in the season.
We’re at the point in the Buccaneers’ season where it’s become about who’s going to stick around past this year. And to that end, good on Tampa GM Jason Licht for hanging on to tight end O.J. Howard—teams called about him thinking that, since he’d fallen behind Cam Brate on the depth chart, they might be able to poach him. Licht didn’t get too far down the road on that, mostly because he knew he has him under contract through next year (with an option for 2021) and Howard was too elite a talent to give up on that quickly. And Howard showed that Sunday in a win over the Jags, with five catches for 61 yards.
Joe doesn’t disagree with Breer’s assessment of Licht. It could have been easy to trade him and some fans were hoping that would happen. But Licht decided to keep his investment and Howard has somewhat come around in the Arians/Leftwich offense.
Though this may sound ridiculous, the way a handful of teams continue to lose and the Bucs continue to win, maybe it is too soon to start deciding who should be thrown overboard in a few weeks?

Poorly managed teams make trades during the season.

Keep our young players…….draft some more…..get younger…….Dump Dotson & Suh……draft replacements in the first two rounds…..save some money…..give the money to Godwin…..maybe some to Nassib…….franchise Shaq & give Jameis a cheap 3 year offer…..he’ll take it.

Howard
Auclair
Hudson
The only TEs we should need on the roster next year.

Slow your roll boyz…the win was fun…but it was one of those games where the ball bounced your way….not a cold calculated ,well executed NFL mechanical victory that make up the large body of wins in playoff teams W column….I don’t count Wild Card as play off teams or game

give Jameis a cheap 3 year offer…..he’ll take it.
tbbf i know you are old as dirt maybe someday you and STPETE can share stories of watching the 1st wheel being developed but damn dude. low ball jameis LOL he wont take it and his agent could be disbarred for not doing what is in his clients best interest. you people are hilarious… Jameis will be a 100 million dollar PLUS quarterback, for his sake hopefully outside of Tampa….
you do realize it’s punishment not a privilege to play for the worst franchise in sports history…. so why would a talented young-man leading a top 5 offense take a discount to play for owners that have ZERO intentions of fielding a competitive team. believe me what you consider competitive and what I consider competitive are two different things…. wow… you people take delusional thoughts to some pretty high levels. again I ask, why would a 25 year old qb leading a top 5 offense take a low ball deal…. He will take a home town discount but he won’t take a prove it deal or a low ball incentive deal because he won’t have to… please please think before writing.
all that being said, maybe if you are lucky the bucs can replace jameis with COMP pick…. i hear all the smart GM’s are grabbing starting qb’s with comp picks these days.

There are people who wanted to trade Evans and promote Godwin to #1 WR. Alcohol can be a dangerous potion sometimes.
December 2nd, 2019 at 9:48 am
Though I have my own ideas about potential moves in the next off season I agree it is too early to discuss them. We fans get to see how much progress our team will make in these last four games. After this season ends let the debates begin.
I want to get the expectation of losing out of the back of my mind now so I will watch the remaining games intently. After ten years of losing the memories linger on and on. Only wins will erase them.

I still think ME13 could/should be traded.
I know, crazy talk…..

Jason Licht is still garbage, the ultimate fact is the way he has built this team so poorly. After 5 drafts the bucs should be competing for a playoff spot, they are not. He passes on solidifying the OL and then drafting a legit NFL rb that would create a running game and thus help the turnover prone qb, but licht drafts slow DBs and TEs and Ks and then the bucs go 5-11 over and over.

I am glad to see Howard and Jameis on the same page for a change. I believe that sometimes it takes longer for some players to develop the right chemistry.

I fully agree with Tampabaybucfan, I really sense Winston will take a modified contract with built in incentives. He realizes that in FA teams will consider his history of turnovers and W?L record. He is still a work in progress and I think BA and BL are best equipped to improve him. OL, DL, RB should be 2020 priority. Only thing I disagree with TB on is Suh. Veteran leadership important.

You don´t trade the best player on your team men, you just don´t!!!!!

Hey t……x. (I can’t post your name because Joe protects you)
I may be old but I’m not stupid…..in this day & age a $100 million dollar contract is cheap…..last time I checked…..Look at Matt Ryan’s deal…
So, like I said….offer him a cheap contract & he’ll take it.
December 2nd, 2019 at 10:27 am
jameis almost has to take a team friendly deal. he should be motivated to keep one of the most talented pass catching group in the NFL helping him look good and no team besides the bucs would risk making a major commitment to Jameis.
as the season wears on, it looks like the assessment that the prior coaches were wasting talent and not meshing with the scouts is more and more valid.
Licht has a cringe-worthy list of draft busts and an even worse track record in free agency, but this is looking like his best draft class since 2015 whilst 2018 players like Vea, RoJo, Cappa, and Whitehead (i hesitate to put Carlton Davis on this list but he may deserve it) are also big contributors to recent progress
December 2nd, 2019 at 10:29 am
Licht has no business still being hired by the Bucs…….
A win against a broken Jags team doesnt change that.
December 2nd, 2019 at 10:36 am
Typical overreaction Monday….
The Bucs beat a bad Jaguars team and Jason Licht gets praised.
When the Bucs beat the Rams I remember someone on BSPN talking about how Leftwhich deserves a head coaching job.
Remember when Daniel Jones was the greatest QB of all time for a week?
December 2nd, 2019 at 11:04 am
Is this a joke? So we beat a couple of horrible teams and suddenly things are different?
December 2nd, 2019 at 11:04 am
Lauding Licht for not trading a non-performing player whom he drafted in the first place is beyond hilarious!
As to Jameis’ contract, it’s HIS decision now. There’s no sense in debating.

“Pertaining to long term QB contracts and the notion of team friendly deal
IT IS OUT OF JW3 HANDS
The franchise QB contract “Number” is “controlled and heavily influenced” by the Players union
That QB “NUmber” has to go up to push all the other positional numbers
IT CAN NOT BE STAGNANT
Mahomes will be the first 40 million man and all the levels below have to move up for that to occur
Players union will “disbar” any agent who brings down the QB “Number” whatsoever
JW3 agent Joel Segal dont play”

Franchise tag Jameis to a 1 year deal
Re-sign Godwin, Barrett, Nassib, Suh and JPP if can afford all
Replace Dotson
Draft DLine, Oline and 1 RB- don’t waste free agent salary cap $ on rb.
If they still don’t make playoffs, blow it up Marlins style

Pick6 Carton Davis is our best DB. Why would you not have him on the list. He’s a thumper against the run and much improved in coverage. Dean is looking solid too. If SMB continues to improve we’re going to have a scary D. I was seeing coverage sacks yesterday. That made me smile.
December 2nd, 2019 at 1:37 pm
Licht should never receive praise. He has destroyed the roster and screwed up the salary cap situation not to mention all the high character acquisitions. As long as he’s in charge of the roster, there’s no hope.
December 2nd, 2019 at 4:21 pm
I believe this Breer fella is someone Joe made mention of during training camp as doing a “drive bye” One Buc since we don’t merit a sleepover to these fancy pants writers. I’m paraphrasing obviously, but that’s the gist I got from it. Yeah, I don’t give a flying f what Breer thinks.
December 2nd, 2019 at 6:15 pm
Some of you guys are hilarious, Many of you give Licht too much blame, many of you too much credit. During the Lovie years, Lovie was in charge and called the personnel shots. Koetter underutilized many players, so that analysis is somewhat up in the air. And Arians and his staff made many of the personnel decisions this year. So frankly, I don’t know how good Licht really is at personnel decisions. And likely, if you think about who was calling the shots, neither are you. Last time in past history we were in that situation was when Allen was GM, and Gruden was calling the shots. And all I got from that is that Gruden never met a player he didn’t love, and those drafts were mostly disasters. Even at that, I remember Allen talking to the Big Dog, and saying we were going to sign a number of big name FA’s after gutting the old guard…and we never did. Was that the Glazers decision, or a ManU decision?
December 2nd, 2019 at 7:10 pm
Mark2001, you’re exactly right. GMs, like QBs, tend to get too much of both credit and blame.
It’s funny to me that some people are complaining that Licht has “destroyed” the roster. What roster is that, exactly? The one that Raheem and Schiano won all those games with? Give me a break. If your only barometer for success is a championship, then sorry, pal, you should have become a New England fan back around the turn of the century. Short of that, you’re still an angry, uptight internet poster for the majority of the last twenty years.

I know I’m going to get ridiculed for this but I’ve bin saying it for like 5 years if Winston can cut his turnovers in half an out defense can play average we will win a lot of games. Even if Winston doesn’t cut down on the turnovers but our defense only gives up 20 pts a game our offense will put up more than 20 most games. DEFENSE wins y’all get us a average defense an we will win a lot
