Jameis Vs. Mariota

December 16th, 2019

Laughable argument now

Hell, it’s hard to believe now but there was a time just a few weeks ago when some twisted minds thought a gimmicky quarterback was a better option than Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Yeah, there were folks — some paid major money to talk otherwise intelligently about football — who thought brittle, runaround quarterback Marcus Mariota should have been drafted by the Bucs and not Jameis.

Yes, these folks really do walk among us.

Ira Schoffel, who covered Jameis in college working for the Tallahassee Democrat and now writes about Florida State sports for Warchant.com, believes this dumb argument — Jameis vs. Mariota — should be put to bed once and for all.

Not that I’m petty or anything, but just in case anyone’s wondering … As we near the end of their 5th NFL seasons, Jameis has thrown for 6,018 more yards and 42 more touchdowns than Mariota. And, of course, he’s still a starting QB.

Joe never liked this mute, Mariota. Joe thought he was way overrated as a passer; didn’t like how he was always hurt, and he seemed to be much more of a runner than a thrower.

And gee, look how that turned out.

You know things are bad for you when you are benched for your team losing and the guy replacing you — Ryan Tannehill of all people! — is leading your team to a playoff run.

Look at the bright side, Marcus. You will always have the Rose Bowl. And a Japanese car commercial where you still get to wear your Oregon jersey.

I believe many of these “talent evaluators” were the same ineffable dullards that “guaranteed” Jameis would quit football to play baseball.

FOR ALL YOU JAMES LOVERS OUT THERE , IT ISN’T OVER TELL THE FAT LADY SING’S , GIVE MARCUS THE SAME WEAPON’S THAT JAME HAD AND THE COACHES IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS, AND I BELIEVE MARCUS WOULD BE THE BETTER Q/B …WE NEED TO PICK HIM UP IF HE COMES AVAILABLE , LIKE WE DID McCoy AND SUIE……

  8. Ace Says:

Jameis will be a Buc for a looooooong time… haters might as well find another team

  9. doctor_berto Says:

Michael, give jameis the offensive line, running game and defense that Mariota had and Bucs would be in playoffs most years

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

    “813

This game with Houston is the game that will settle alot of the ifs

Houston is a motivated playoff team and considered in the upper tier

Have we really turned a corner or just beat bad teams?

As important, it will be Deshaun Watson vs Jameis Winston

Watson and Mahomes will be resetting the QB market this offseason

    If Winston outplays Watson

Its going to be tough giving JW3 a 1 year franchise tag while watson gets a 4 year $36 per year contract”

  11. Ryan Says:

I remember Big Dog being one of the people who was all for Mariota. I thought Mariota would’ve been much better but I can only imagine how bad this franchise would be if they took him first overall. Probably would’ve had another top pick for sure.

    Give it up already…

  15. DalvinCookRules Says:

As an FSU fan, my personal biases were clear on the Winston vs Mariota going into the draft.

That said, I will have to defend Mariota a bit here because the system you play in and the talent around you matters! I think he has great accuracy when given time to throw, but making those quick and correct decisions is something both he and Winston are not elite at.

Glad we took Winston, altho he is not Mahomes (which is rhe type of QB i had projected him to be). I still think Mariota can be a very effective QB in this league (he would be smart to seek playing for Belichick)

  16. mike Says:

\\Jameis has also thrown for more yards than EJ manuel, Christian Ponder, Chris Weinke and Brad Johnson and Danny Kannell!! Bucs leader and Seminole leader!!!

Mariota vs. Winston comparison, “Off the field incidents”

    Mariota zero
    Winston at least four.

  21. TexBuc Says:

I hope Winston never goes on those Nissan Heisman Commericals.

  22. mark2001 Says:

Folks…sit back and enjoy the next two games…they will speak volumes.

We play the Texans, a team doing well in the playoff hunt, though lacking a good pass rush and coverage. Jameis should play well, as long as the receivers and TE step up.

And ATL.. enough said…should be a shootout. And Jameis will have a chance to look good against an again, average D.

He plays well in those games, with minimal Ints., and it likely he get that contract. If not, at best a Franchise Tag.

  23. TexBuc Says:

Base line for contract negotiations is the franchise tag. Whether some on this site want to accept or not as the ceiling on QB salaries go up for the very top QB’s so does the rest of the QB market. Supply and demand will dictate Winston’s salary as it is a given fact their are more teams looking for franchise QB’s than are available equals higher pay for all QBs.

I believe the only way you get Winston to accept less per year is offer more guaranteed years in lieu of higher per year salary.

  24. webster Says:

    @ michael
You mean the weapons mariota had which he sucked with and tannerhill is using the same weapons but is balling out? You mean mariota could not use humphries? The same humphries many said jameis would miss? Sure mariota would ball out with jameis weapon lol. You are typical dumb buc fan.

  27. SKBucsFan Says:

Don’t get too excited fanboys. The Bucs are 1-5 against teams with winning records. This Saturday will be a big test for Jameis. Play a clean game and he may get a contract, play a normal JW game against good teams and he is a franchise tag at best. Although with that said you still need to take the Licht /Glazer factor into account. Anything is possible with their limited decision making abilities.

    Go Bucs!

  28. Tval Says:

813 acts like he’s holding Jameis to “$25 mil per” because he’s WRONG about everything else. Lol!!!! Misery loves company. “NO, HE’LL ONLY GET $25 mil a year not 30.” 40 times you’ve posted this. Lol!!! Imagine being THAT GUY. LMAO!! Sad existence.
Mariotas HORRIBLE. Not a comparison. Mahomes has Tyreek Hill. That changes EVERYTHING. Kelce is also a better option than any Jameis has. Have some perspective, dummies.

  29. Ndog Says:

Just one question here, why is anyone rooting for our QB to succeed a fanboy? Shouldn’t any fan of a team want the players on that team, especially the QB, to do well?

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Mariota just never exhibited that wow factor, more like sleep inducing why am I watching this mishmash of futility.

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Ndog

Because the Jameis haters are running out of material.

  32. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Marcus is soft as cotton. Where are all the Marcus lovers at these days?

  33. Cgmaster27 Says:

Dont worry joe, theres still morons who think the bucs shouldve taken mariota. Looking at you bucnut, whose been real quiet the since yesterday.
Mariota was exactly who most of us thought he was. A west coast checkdown qb with zero fire and a penchant to get hurt. And its funny how those are now pining this next game, like its going to change anything. Jameis will be throwing to perriman and three dudes off practice squads. Hopefully we can run the ball for more than 50 yards this game, but im not holding my breath.

  34. Cgmaster27 Says:

@michaelwrite seems tannehill is doing just fine with those same weapons. So whats his and your excuse now?

  35. ColBucFan Says:

    Well…sleepy Mariota has better stats…

    Playoff appearances:
    Mariota: 1
    Winston: 0

  36. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

This argument was over long ago

    Jameis over Marcus anyday

  37. OneBuc55 Says:

Winston vs. Mariota was a laughable debate back then and is even more funny now that the numbers are in…6000+ more yards and 42 more TDs lol…

Not only did Winstons skillset translate much better to the NFL than Marcus “made of glass” Mariota; his toughness made him a much better fit here in Tampa Bay…Mariota wouldn’t have made it 3 seasons dropping back behind this suspect offensive line not to mention the non-existent running game…

The saddest part of it all is 98% of the guys on this board whinning for Mariota don’t have the gonads to admit it…Thank goodness Lovie didn’t listen to his buddy Tony Dungy…

  38. TX Bucs fan Says:

Joe please post an article naming the national media types that have called to cut ties with JW3. Should be entertaining!

  39. Hamsadwitchtime Says:

You guys saying we should judge Winston on next two games… laughable. He is missing his two best receivers and left tackle with no running game an questionable D. If he survives he will get multi year contract! Go Bucs!!!

  40. danr Says:

Those are all fair analysis joe, except the ‘still a starter’ part.

I do not know if jameis would have survived tannehill being his backup either.

He might have. But i think arians would have wanted to see what tannehill could do after one of those 5 pick games.

  41. Jgar Says:

If Jameis had Derrick Henry his interceptions would be half. Not a good argument to compare MM to Jameis.

  42. danr Says:

to be fair the other way, marioata had a great running game, and defense. luxuries jameis misses.

  43. mark2001 Says:

Ham…give us a break. We have a poor running game and weak but improving defense…and you guys say we can’t blame Winston for the Int’s. because he has no running game and he is trying to hard to score because our D can’t stop anyone.

Now the D is actually bailing the Offense out, in more and more cases, but you ignore that and pout because we have some players on the injury report. True, they are good players, but did you ask how many Detroit guys were on injury yesterday during our first half offensive romp? Of course you didn’t.

Now you say Winston can’t be held accountable if he doesn’t play well the next two weeks?

Smells like hypocrisy of the first order to me.

  44. mark2001 Says:

danr…don’t look now, but this D is playing better week to week, and now is even shutting down 7’s for 3’s, forcing fumbles and ints, and doing a better job on third down. Forget the D statement.

And there is a difference between having an effective running game and keeping the D honest in playing the run. We haven’t been very effective, in fact often ineffective… but we have been keeping the D honest. And that is important.

  45. mark2001 Says:

Ham..one last thing…if someone wants to criticize Jameis for not getting 3 or 4 hundred yards in the next two games, they are idiots… partially because of the injuries. And partially because the two teams will be tougher than the last two.

But to expect him to read the D, look off defenders, hit the open man, and not throw interceptions putting the team in the hole isn’t unreasonable. Those expectations aren’t unreasonable….. No exuses.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

Tannehill has actually been playing quite well lately, I can’t wait for the Titans to give him a big fat contract this offseason only to see him turn into a pumpkin next year.

For Mariota, I have said for years that the Bucs got this right, but he will still get a chance to play somewhere. People will look at the Ravens and think Mariota can do that. And, Mariota can do that. He will of course get hurt after 3 weeks, but he can run that type of offense really well.

Speaking of the Ravens offense, why in the world was Quinton Flowers reduced to signing to the Vipers as a RB? The guy, in college, was a better QB than Jackson and they both have about the same measurables – and I’d say Flowers has a slightly better arm and is absolutely the better runner. If the Vipers want more than 6,000 people in the stands, they’ll quickly realize that Flowers is their starting QB, not their starting RB, and build the offense around him.

  47. Deez days Says:

Jameis will break Brett favre record for INTs in 2 years 280 picks watch

  48. Rod Munch Says:

I was just checking the Vipers season ticket select a seat stuff, and let me revise that 6,000 number above to 600.

BTW, the Vipers have $100 season tickets (albeit only 5 games). The only time I had season tickets for the Bucs was in ’97 when they had a section where season tickets were only $100 – of course that was for 10 games, and for the NFL, and the Bucs turned the corner and became a playoff team. What a fun year that was. I don’t expect that from the Vipers, and based on the ticket sales I see, I’m not sure I expect the Vipers to make it through the 1st season without relocating.

  49. Rod Munch Says:

Deez – Kewl story brah, thanx 4 sharin

  50. lokog Says:

if marcus would’ve been in tampa bay he would be broken no way he survives the beating jameis has taken.

  51. Posey99 Says:

Joe will back himself into a corner like this, then Jameis will throw 5 INT in a game and Joe will include a link in his next post where he once said jameis sucked. Typical journalism in America. Can always twist it to make themselves seem right and or they predicted the future.

“stat’s are for losers” was often quoted here. now stats are important? How about win’s and loses the last 5 years? is this a team sport? I guess Jameis is the MVP since he through for so many yards…

  52. Rod Munch Says:

Posey99 – It is a team sport and Winston has had the worst defense in football since 2015, the worst kicking game in football since 2015 and played the hardest schedule since 2016. Meanwhile he’s headed one of the NFL’s best offenses and has broke every team passing record and is on-pace for a HOF career.

But yeah dummy, it’s the offense that is at fault.

    LOL!

  53. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Micheal wright u can say the same thing about jw having mm defense oh wait that has been the case the last 4 games and what has jw done with that…….oh that’s right, JUST WIN 🤷‍♂️

  54. stvcl Says:

230+ yds in the 1st quarter…by a Bucs quarterback! IDGAF that was outstanding!

  55. PSL Bob Says:

Damn Joe, that’s cruel. One thing to make the argument for Jameis being a better QB than Mariota, but kicking a man when he’s down is cruel.

  56. 813bucboi Says:

    tval

    what are you talking about?….lol….

you sound like realist after a bucs win……just spitting garbage out your mouth…..

JW has 2 1K WRs…..brate once led the league in TDs by a TE…..

    what?….you think JW gets 38mil per year?…..lol….STFU!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!

  57. Posey99 Says:

“But yeah dummy, it’s the offense that is at fault.”

You wont fix the defense until you fix the turnovers and running game. There inst such a thing as a great defense that’s on the field all the time. Another reason why a consistent running game is important. Balance wins games and superbowls

  58. Rod Munch Says:

    Here’s some fun facts….

    Offensive and defensive rankings…

    Winston

    YEAR | OFF | DEF
    2015 | 5 | 10
    2016 | 18 | 23
    2017 | 9 | 32
    2018 | 3 | 27
    2019 | 3 | 16

    Mariota

    YEAR | OFF | DEF
    2015 | 30 | 12
    2016 | 11 | 20
    2017 | 23 | 13
    2018 | 25 | 8
    2019 | BENCHED

Some observations… In 2016, that was the year the Bucs lost all their receivers and were down to starting Brate and Humphries – a couple of practice squad guys…. In 2015 Lovie had a top 10 defense – the first (and only) since the Gruden days… Mariota’s is only 376 yards ahead of Winston in career rushing (1399 vs 1023) and one TD rushing ahead of Winston (11 vs 10) despite all the dedicated running plays.

Finally, here’s a shocking stat for you – Mariota had actually started more games than Winston going into this season (55 vs 54).

  59. Rod Munch Says:

Posey99 – If Winston isn’t needing to throw 50 times a game and score 30 points a game just to stay in it, then those turnovers will come down.

Here’s another fun fact based on the stats I just posted…

In 2016, the Bucs defense was 15th in scoring defense, by far the best of the Winston years. Well in that year the Bucs were 13th in turnover ratio.

So it turns out if the defense does their job – Winston isn’t trying to constantly make up points and the mistakes go away.

Now think if Winston had a top 5 defense like Favre had every year.

  60. Posey99 Says:

Those stats are pretty fancy. Too bad they don’t translate into win’s. Go back and look at time of possession. Let’s see how much rest our defense gets. Go look up the great defenses of the last 20 years and you’ll see that they control the clock. They don’t air it out and brag about stats.

How’s the top yards passing leaders doing this season? Winston, Goff, Wentz, Ryan, Murray and mayfield? please…

  61. Posey99 Says:

Consistent running backs and consistent play at QB is one of the best things for your Defense. All coaches know this. Turning the ball over is bad because it give the other team a chance to score, obviously bur it also wears out your defense

  62. mark2001 Says:

Joe…I heard Spencer Schnell has been resigned. Can’t keep those Redbirds down. But seriously, one thing the guy could do is find openings in the D…and that is exactly what Jameis needs…someone that can get open, for Jameis, in contrast to most lumbering TE’s.

  63. Rod Munch Says:

    Here’s some fun facts….

Offensive and defensive rankings… The first 5 years of Brett Favre… I added the turnover ratio just to see how it worked out – keeping in mind that Favre had a top defense early in his career…

    Winston

YEAR | OFF | DEF | Turnover ratio
    2015 | 5 | 10 | 22
    2016 | 18 | 23 | 13
    2017 | 9 | 32 | 16
    2018 | 3 | 27 | 31
    2019 | 3 | 16 | 27

    FAVRE

YEAR | OFF | DEF | Turnover ratio
    1994 | 9 | 6 | 3
    1995 | 7 | 14 | 24
    1996 | 5 | 1 | 2
    1997 | 4 | 7 | 17
    1998 | 5 | 4 | 28

Winston actually beats out Favre twice in offensive ranking (in yards at least)…. Favre had a great defense – the rankings above are in yards, but in points, the DEF rankings were 5, 4, 1, 5 and 11…. The defensive scoring ranking for the Bucs over Winston’s first five years has been 26, 15, 22, 31 and 30.

Just an interesting stat breakdown I’ve never looked out before.

  64. Rod Munch Says:

Posey99 – The Bucs are 6th in time of possession in 2019.

In 2015, when they were the 2nd best running team in football, the Bucs were 26th in TOP.

    Next.

  65. Buczilla Says:

Winston was by far the better pick over Mariotta and he has made a lot of the national pundits look like fools. That said, five years of sheer buffoonery intermixed with great play does not make him worth good, young, franchise qb money. The jury is still out on this dude, so giving him anything more than the franchise tag or a cheap short term deal is beyond irresponsible.

Make him earn it with a solid year of good play and don’t make the mistake the Rams did with Jared Goff. Some competition next year in case he goes south again would be wise as well. “Trust but verify” should be the mantra at One Buc Place concerning Jameis and any kind of deal.

  66. Posey99 Says:

another stat nerd that doesnt understand football. These arent robots and you clearly don’t understand the game. go look at the top passing leaders like mayfield, rivers, murray, winston, goff, wentz, ryan, prescott all in the top 10 and then look at their teams records. Think theres a link? Since you’re a stat expert I’ll let you guess.

  67. MTM Says:

When and if Winston beats very good teams repeatedly I’ll buy in. Until then beating up on sub 500 teams is not impressive on his way to another off season of zero playoff appearances. The Glazers are idiots so at this point I just assume they will resign him to 5 more years of torturing Buc fans.

  68. Posey99 Says:

Stats sell jerseys, wins sell tickets. Pretty simple

  69. Anonymous Says:

Michelle Wright you need to lay off the booze

  70. Rod Munch Says:

    Posey99 – OK, top passers…

    1, Winston – .500 football despite 31st scoring defense
2, Dak – Division leader, in the playoff hunt
3, Rivers – has a cannon in his pants, has lots of kids
4, Goff – two wins over .500, in the playoff hunt
    5, Ryan – has a huge forehead
6, Wilson – in the playoffs
7, Watson – in the playoffs
8, Mahomes – in the playoffs
9, Brady – in the playoffs
10, Cousins – in the playoffs

So seven of the top 10 passers are in the playoffs, or still alive to make the playoffs, and 8 of to are .500 or better.

So what exactly was your point?

  71. Stanglassman Says:

Over the last couple of years I’ve argued that if Jameis was playing for the Titians or Jags they’d be in the playoffs every year. A lot less people would disagree with me now.

  72. mark2001 Says:

Don’t agree Stang… the coaching in Ten and Jac is a mess. Now if you said Andy Reid was his Coach the last four year, and he would be a much better QB, I’d agree.

  73. mark2001 Says:

Actually, I’ll say it right here and now. It seems Jameis is really growing under the coaching of BA. I don’t think it is smoke and mirrors. I wish we had him under contract one more year and we could see just how good he can really be. We will have to franchise him, likely, to see that,

And if I’m Jameis, I sure as heck don’t want to go elsewhere. He is finally getting some great coaching, and I’d imagine he knows with another year or two under Arians…if he really takes it to heart…he might really end up being a great QB…among the best.

But if he goes elsewhere and gets poor coaching, he might end up richer. But he will likely never reach his full QB potential.

    Just saying.

  74. Craig Says:

Jameis is better than Marcus, with that and a five dollar bill you can get a cup of coffee. That is all. I understand that Jameis passed his audition game and will now get paid.

That doesn’t mean he will start next season any better than he did this season, or the last, or the one before that, or the disastrous start of his career. I don’t think any team or coach could have much more out of him than we got here.

He is what he is and a slow starter is that thing. Remember that when next season starts and this conversation starts all over again.

  75. MTM Says:

    @Craig nice summation.

  76. Mayhem41 Says:

Posey, half those Q.B.’s you named aren’t in the top 10 in passing yardage, genius. Really should check before running your yap. Mayfield, LMFAO. Now that’s rich….

  77. DBS Says:

What’s kewl is seeing the people that went in to hiding while the team was losing. Now they decide to show up when the team is winning.

  78. 541Buc Fan Says:

Y’all are still mad Mariota’s Ducks crushed JW’s Seminoles. I can still see JW falling backwards while heaving up one of the biggest WTF INT.

FYI, The Ducks are playing in the Rose Bowl, while FSU is done for the year.

    Go Ducks

  79. BigHog Says:

MtM:: off field incidents will never AND I said never win or lose not one game played on the field ….and I yield to my opposer!!!

  80. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Wow, Posey may be the dumbest poster ever on this site. Thanks for putting him on blast Rod! I mean stupidity like that needs to be called out. Totally clueless and apparently doesn’t know how to use google and just makes sh1t up!

  81. Fire the fans Says:

Time of possession he says 😂😂 we dominate possession most games you chucklehead

  82. Posey99 Says:

    top 15 sorry…

  83. Posey99 Says:

I didnt call oute and yall are trying defend a QB just because he throws for a lot of yards. come on now you cant turn the damn ball over that much. we will never win.

  84. Posey99 Says:

    call out anybody*

  85. Brohande Says:

But the interceptions tho! #BrokenRecord. Seriously.. that’s all the JW haters have to hang on him.. my god.. Bucs fans would be crapping themselves to have an offense like this back in the day. Why are we so quick to blow this up now? Why not attempt to improve the ACTUAL deficiencies on this team?

Is it entirely possible that some of the interceptions were (as BA has said before) the wrong routes being run by receivers and not necessarily on JW? Are the tipped passes that hit our receivers in the hands and then go to the opposing defense on JW?

BTW, JW has half the rushing yards in a third of the attempts as Peyton Barber, and RoJo has only 100 more yards than Peyton. Still think we don’t need a RB?

Looking at the last two games, the first pick that JW threw in both of them were the result of a LB dropping back into coverage and making a hell of a play on the ball. Why was the LB dropping back like that? Because we don’t have a running game that any opposing team would respect or fear.. PERIOD.

FFS, QB play is NOT the issue. Just name a QB that could come here and produce the same as JW right away. FA or Draft.

The QB / passing offense ain’t broken. And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
