“Coaches Are Going To Go Back And Look At Some Tendencies”
December 11th, 2019Only a football novice would think it’s a coincidence that Jameis Winston throws a lot of interceptions early in games’ opening drives.
It’s happened four times this season. And make it five if you count the one called back against the Saints on Oct. 6.
Ironically, Jameis saved himself on that play with a delay of game call on 3rd-and-6 from the Bucs’ 47 yard line in New Orleans.
It happened Sunday against the Colts, and Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks gave his take on the pick on the latest episode of TAMPA TWO from The Identity Tampa Bay.
“That first interception was a great play by Darius Leonard. I mean, it was something that I know the [Bucs] coaches are going to go back and look at some tendencies. Because there is no way you get to that spot that quick unless they picked up something in film study. … Again, you give the other team credit. That first interception, again, [Jameis] threw it, but I think that was more the [Colts] coach knowing there was something there.”
Joe’s not a big believer in coincidences, and defenses seems awfully confident on those opening drives against the Bucs. Whether it’s in Tampa or on the road, or even in England, the Bucs aren’t disguising well early.
Joe agrees with Brooks. Coaches are going to dive deeper; they should.
Of course, a competent running game would go a long way toward keeping defenses off balance.

This is kind of sad because it is basically stating either the bucs do not self scout themselves and their tendencies which would mean this is just a minor league franchise or the bucs do not spend enough time in the film room as the championship franchises do in the nfl.

Tendencies? Easy just play the pass every down. Peyton barber ain’t going nowhere
December 11th, 2019 at 2:52 pm
It does seem like the defense knows the play and routes better than the WR. The play against Atlanta the DB wasnt concerned about Mike Evans. He went straight after the ball. Same w/ Leonard this past week. JW is trying to look the safeties off just to have the backside defender come undercut the route.
December 11th, 2019 at 2:58 pm
Now wait just a second. If I remember correctly, Rojo ran for a first down on the Bucs very first play of the game. Jameis got picked the first time on his very first pass. The Leonard pick was a slant rout that they ambushed. It was a really good defensive play. Granted, the run game needs major improvement, but it has nothing to do with that second pick by Leonard. There’s something about the formation or Winston’s body language that gave that away.

See these are the little things folks just don’t understand. As a QB you see a defense and you base where you’re going to throw the ball on what each defender is supposed to do and where they are supposed to be. Many times you don’t have the opportunity to see it after the ball is snapped and if someone goes rouge and jumps something and they are not where they are supposed to be based upon the read bad things can happen. That is called them making a great play. Also if a player does that too often they can make a ton of mistakes and hurt their defense, so those plays are rare and special. To be clear I am not making excuses or saying this was a great throw but this does happen and as they say the defense gets paid too.

So much for the BS that ole stale biscuit was trying to sell about jay-miss only throwing int’s when trailing and late in games!!!!!! At this point, did he say anything that was true this past offseason????? but the local media will never call bruce arrogance on anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What until the sheep see how the schedule lines up next year!!!!!!! sad that it takes multiple years for the sheep to see the truth exposed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JayMiss telegraphs plays, from QB sneaks to long bombs.
December 11th, 2019 at 3:25 pm
Doosh you telegraph your intelligence, or lack thereof, daily.
December 11th, 2019 at 3:31 pm
Good one ndipsh!t!
Keep huggin’ dem nuts!
December 11th, 2019 at 3:38 pm
The first pass that was picked was telegraphed by the formation (shotgun on 1st and 10) and by the LT in pass set. My belief is that teams know the Bucs will be firing away downfield and drop accordingly. Time to get the RB’s more involved in the pass game early.
December 11th, 2019 at 3:47 pm
Tendencies?
Just stand there long enough JW will throw one to you…
December 11th, 2019 at 3:51 pm
Forcing it to the player who he thinks didn’t get their share the previous Game is the trend! Even most fans know this. Usually it is Evans because Godwin went off the previous week and for some reason he feels obligated to even things out. For an entire week during the season I listened to the media ask what happened to Evans why couldn’t we get him the ball. If I was an opposing defense where would I think the ball was going? Case solved!
December 11th, 2019 at 3:51 pm
keep huggin’ dem nuts?
a true comedic genius!
December 11th, 2019 at 3:54 pm
Most of the early Int’s are forced balls into double coverage instead of the open man
December 11th, 2019 at 4:04 pm
@BucnJim
I think you’re on to something with your forcing it theory.
Of course The Nuthugger Brigade will surely say that it only showcases his generosity and sense of family!
December 11th, 2019 at 4:10 pm
Jameis will throw another 2 or 3 interceptions in Detroit. And bring the Bucs back again. They call him Mr..Helter..Skelter!
December 11th, 2019 at 4:21 pm
I remember several of his interception being due to “not seeing” the underneath linebaker … if he doesn’t see him he doesn’t not throw. he may need more underneath the routes field awareness
December 11th, 2019 at 4:31 pm
Mike Johnson,
Helter Skelter? You are either a Beatles fan, or as old as I am. Good comparison!
December 11th, 2019 at 4:43 pm
Ndog
Good pointss
December 11th, 2019 at 4:46 pm
bucsjim
i agree….
most are forced passes….
GO BUCS!!!!
December 11th, 2019 at 4:57 pm
I would like to see them dial up some easy passes for JW at first.. maybe some screens or quick slants just to get him into rhythm.. then start airing it out.
December 11th, 2019 at 5:12 pm
People seem remedial when trying to understand why Tannehill has succeeded, and Jameis and Carson Wentz struggle at times. His name is Derrick Henry. It’s not rocket science, dummies. Defenses HAVE to “stack the box” vs #22 and Winston and Wentz, and their respective receiving weapons, are MUCH bigger threats to beat you than their running games. It’s HARD to listen to some of the idiots on here
December 11th, 2019 at 5:36 pm
Brooks is spot on. And that first INT was just on a short pass over the middle to Mike Evans. Leonard must’ve picked up on a tell someplace in film study. Kudos to him if he did.
December 11th, 2019 at 5:39 pm
This is a new trend,Jameis was not even listed in the all time high pick 6 list through 2018 and they went down to three. As for the Leonard INT, Jameis got schooled by excellent linebacker play.
December 11th, 2019 at 5:47 pm
Tvai, that doesn’t explain why Marcus M is sitting on the bench. If it was all about Henry wouldn’t he have had success also? I think Henry is a big factor but so is the O-line and the decision making and accuracy of the QB.
December 11th, 2019 at 5:53 pm
I wonder why they can’t use the virtual reality software to help Jameis overcome this alarming pick 6 trend that has cropped up this year.
December 11th, 2019 at 6:01 pm
The tell might even be in the way Evans lined up or which way he runs his route.
Tendencies might just take over at that point.
December 11th, 2019 at 6:20 pm
Can we get a great big helping of that film study for our Defense on tendencies of opponents running the slant pass? Then undercut their routes like they do ours. For an occasional INT for our team not theirs? It should not be that difficult right? We have the largest coaching staff in the NFL one coach could be dedicated to that every week.
Joe do our coaches still have two practices everyday for the starters and the second and third string players so they can “gain experience “? I know they did it during training camp. Have we dug up and “Gems” from this system?
December 11th, 2019 at 6:40 pm
Its very simple. Defenders that studies film all the time are always around the ball. Ronde’s int in the championship was due to him studying and knowing the eagles run that play in that area of the field a lot and he was ready for it. Brooks has said he knew if a play was a run or a pass based off if a particular lineman had 3 fingers on the ground as oppose to all 5. He paid attention to minute details. Its no coincedence kueckly is often known for calling out the other team’s plays prior to the snap. Do you guys remember the int by malcolm butler in the superbowl? Belicheck had practiced against that play multiple times leading up to the game and butler was ready for it. Dexter jackson got both his ints based on how gruden prepared his team for the rich gannon pump fake on the slougo route. If you study, you can read the play before it happens. The great ones like ed reed, troy polomalu, rod woodson etc knew this. They did not make all those plays because they were good. They studied to go along with their talent. Ronde was all study because his measurables was nothing special.
December 11th, 2019 at 6:46 pm
This is like Chris walken in true romance, everyone has 17 pantomimes or whatever, you know em you can beat lie detectors all to hell. Jameis for sure has some tells, guess they all do. Like the other person said, get him going with some screens and quick slants, and hope to the football gods one isn’t taken back
December 11th, 2019 at 7:54 pm
There should be a local parade on Monday after a win in which Winston throws no picks.
December 11th, 2019 at 8:04 pm
Wait, Brooks said the defense made a great play?!? What?!? How is that possible, every INT is on the QB, it’s never a great play by someone else – that’s what the idiots who aren’t in the HOF on this message board tell me.
Anywho, I actually thought the 1st INT was a bad read by Winston – but the last INT I thought was just a great play. The 2nd INT was yet another stupid Bucs receiver knocking the ball in the air. Arians needs to bench guys who do that – it was literally the first thing I remember about being taught to play football, you NEVER knock the ball in the air. Yet in the last month there’s been three INTs from guys doing that. Bench them until they figure out that you knock balls down, not up, if you can’t catch it.
December 11th, 2019 at 10:27 pm
I have been saying Leftwich’s playcalling is a big reason for Winston’s INTS spiking this year, and every time I come to this site, I read about how another football great or expert is saying the same thing (that I’ve been saying for months).
Arians has done a good job overall as HC, but there are some areas where the Bucs have actually regressed (since Koetter).
Again, the bottom line with this offense is, better suit it to Winston’s skills (and weaknesses) or find yourselves a different QB.

I don’t seem to recall but BL’s game plans don’t seem conducive to getting JW some early confidence and rhythm.
Isn’t this where OJ should stand out. Isn’t it pretty easy to design SAFE short passes to the TE?
I hate starting with outs that DB’s can jump…or balls over the middle with LB’s prowling.
Again…if JW rolls right on that first series…as long as we keep defenders from jumping the end preventing JW from moving he would be in great shape…any doubts he runs and slides or goes out of bounds…an easy pass should open up…or an easy run.
