8 Key Happenings At Tampa Bay Vipers Practice Friday
December 13th, 2019Winter strawberries in Plant City are nice, and so are the yummy shakes at Parkesdale Market, but there’s serious XFL football going on out there, too.
*Former Georgia and local Tampa high school star Aaron Murray was the best quarterback on the field today. He delivered lasers all practice long, including flinging a dime over the middle to former Jets, Browns and Redskins receiver Daniel Williams for a 20-yard touchdown.
*He’s back!, former USF QB Quinton Flowers is returned after missing yesterday’s practice with a medical issue. He didn’t look particularly sharp today in 1-on-1’s, missing his receivers frequently.
*Those 1-on-1 sessions got rolling fast. The tank known as RB Jacques Patrick, the former Florida State standout, has arguably the most impressive play, shoving linebacker Emmanuel Beal, a former Oklahoma Sooner, to the ground before making an easy reception.
*This Vipers offense is going to rely a lot on the screen game by the looks of it. A large chunk of the plays in the first 11-on-11 session are screens. One was a Taylor Cornelius pass to Patrick to the left side that resulted in a 30-yard TD, as Patrick had nothing but green grass in front of him.
*The former Calgary Stampeder and Tampa Bay Buccaneer was making plays! Freddie Martino beat his man by a healthy three or four yards before hauling in a one-handed TD grab from Cornelius, who starred at Oklahoma State! Insane grab that results in the offense storming the practice field to celebrate the TD with Martino.
*Aaron Murray again. He dropped a beauty over the shoulder of receiver Ryan Davis in the corner of the endzone from 40 yards out. What a throw. Davis is from St. Pete and was cut by the Patriots earlier this year.
*The Vipers coaching staff is impressive. Ex-Falcons head coach Jerry Glanville is running the defense. Along with offensive guru ex-Bears head coach Marc Trestman, this could be one of the more well-coached teams in the XFL.
*Practice ends with a quick walk-through. Much cleaner practice than yesterday. A lot less penalties/mistakes. This wasn’t lost on Trestman.
After practice, he said, “We want to be a smart football team. Smart football is going to win early in our league. And our guys did a better job today. We had a number of pre-snap penalties yesterday which was, you know, probably expected, and we were much better today. And we’ll look at the tape and see where the other errors in our game came, but pre-snap penalties are always easy to see, turnovers are always easy to see, ball security, we can see it out there on the field. We were better today.”

Like the Vipers coverage. I can’t believe Freddie Martino hasn’t been signed by the Patriots as bad as they need WR’s. Jerry Glanville is a jacka$$

This league has amazing potential NFL should help them and act like a secondary league like they have in soccer in Italy Spain England all over. That would give so many people that are players a chance to become great.

I appreciate the XFL/Viper coverage. It will be nice to have a team to follow during the Bucs off season. How much draft talk can we take?

Hope they don’t have all those stupid rules the NFL has. The NFL has turned into the lingerie league.
