Ian Beckles Grades Jason Licht
November 16th, 2019A former Bucs offensive lineman doesn’t think much of the job Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has done. But the same fellow doing the grading said he can easily see Licht’s grade skyrocket in a good way very soon.
Former Bucs guard and current popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles said he cannot give anyone an “F” so he gives Licht a “D-.” However, Beckles said that grade could turn into an “A” as early as next season.
Beckles said he sees enough young talent on the Bucs making plays that he thinks they could be big-time players shortly and lead a franchise turnaround.
“A lot of our team is still getting better,” Beckles said. “Now next year the grade may change drastically. I mean real quick. When you talk about Ronald Jones who now is everything we thought he wasn’t last year. He’s starting to turn into some things.
“Vita Vea is a good football player. Alex Cappa is all of a sudden playing some good football. Devin White is showing signs he can be fantastic. [Sean] Murphy-Bunting is getting playing time. [Jordan] Whitehead is a draft pick that is playing well.
“Now all of a sudden we have some up and coming players who could be great in two years. Not now though. And that’s the problem. Young players aren’t great now. Neither was Derrick Brooks. Neither was Warren Sapp. Neither was John Lynch, [or] Ronde Barber.”
Beckles makes a heck of a point. Vea is playing like a manbeast. Cappa is just about back to where he was when he finished a game against the Saints with a broken arm. White is showing progress. Whitehead is playing good ball.
The key will be that damn secondary. Can those young defensive backs grow enough by next year? And should the team just sit back in free agency this year and bank on all of them coming through for next year?
That was a really, really, really bad roll of the dice this season.
As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

True but we also had no cap. Then again we could have not payed suh cut Brate and did what we had to do to get one of those safeties in FA last year. That would have been the correct call.

No room on the roster either unless you wanted to kick some of our young prospects to the curb.

If you want to go 5-11 and have the worst defense in the league every year, Jason Licht is your man.
November 16th, 2019 at 2:06 am
Need to focus on o line and getting a veteran leader anywhere in the secondary.
November 16th, 2019 at 4:50 am
Its always next year or give it time, yada- yada- yada.
Year after year with false hope. blah- blah- blah
And if i was a gambling man betting money on Jason’s picks with the draft, Id lose my money.
Jason’s value skyrocketing?
Don’t make me laugh, only thing that went up was his money and contract while we keep being the NFL joke

Gotta also factor in all the FA misses and cap dollars down the drain…

tenure under licht ….lose 66% …win 33% …. Hmmm …. nothing to see here… next order of business …. WTF …
November 16th, 2019 at 6:27 am
the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect differant results……….
November 16th, 2019 at 6:37 am
We have to consider that BA & Bowles are a huge part of last year’s draft……they have nothing to do with VH3, MJ Stewart, Spence, Aguayo…..and, yes….Rojo & Cappa.
I agree that we have several young players in Dean, SMB, Edwards & White….Perhaps Nelson from last year’s draft that look like keepers.
We need to draft a RT in the first 2 rounds along with a DT or DE…..get your veteran corner in FA (if you choose)…..next year’s draft should be focused on the trenches…….If we can replace Dotson & Suh with draft picks…that will be a success.

The Bucs rallying cry.. wait till NEXT year! YAWN
November 16th, 2019 at 7:03 am
ME13? Ungodly? Brate? LVD? Licht was the GM. The Licht hate on here is a stupid headache.
November 16th, 2019 at 7:09 am
We have been saying “wait ‘til next year” for 10 years.
Start winning some games now.
November 16th, 2019 at 7:34 am
Anyone who drafts a kicker with your second round pick is a complete idiot.
November 16th, 2019 at 7:36 am
Team Glazer created what was really a GM-internship position. Licht is learning on the job, and the learning curve is steeper than he imagined. #PaidFloridaVacation

Forget the fact his whole 2016 draft was a bust of very high draft choices.

Curse of Gruden
We have been saying “wait ‘til next year” for 10 years.
it’s been 17 years pal…. just making the playoffs and losing is not successful. If you are ONE and DONE in the post season you just proved you did not belong in the post season in the first place… see dungy the clowns tenure… dungy the clowns one dimensional teams were pretenders never contenders
going 9-7 sneaking in playoffs and getting bounced is NOT a successful season actual that is just as bad as 2-14 you just put some sugar on the crap…. low standard bucfan lowers the bar of what success is out of desperation
bucs have had 2 successful seasons out of 42. McKay’s nfc championship game and Gruden / Sapp glory year… playoff format was different for McKay so they get credit for a good year… All those teams under dungy the clown were pretenders never ONCE did dungy win multiple games in a post season. 2 post season wins in 6 years is laughable not legendary… Only 1 year in 42 have the bucs actually won multiple post season games.
Bucs are the poster child and pure definition of fluke one year wonders.
so instead of constantly referencing a failed past why not raise the standards it can’t be any scarier.
Tom Brady has the same number of super bowl rings in 19 years than the entire buc organization has playoff victories in 42 years…. that is success ladies.
November 16th, 2019 at 8:53 am
brady 40 playoff appearances and 30 playoff wins 6 rings in 19 years
bucs 6 playoff wins 1 expired ring in 42 years… last playoff appearance 12 years ago last meaningful win 17 years ago… basically the bucs organization throws low standard bucfan a bone every 2 to 3 decades so we have some time ladies relax and enjoy the losing
November 16th, 2019 at 8:55 am
division championships and wild card births are rendered absolutely meaningless when you are 1 and done in the post season
November 16th, 2019 at 8:57 am
Joe,
Love you man but here is a some visual help for you….
Legendary
brady 40 playoff appearances and 30 playoff wins 6 rings in 19 years
Not Legendary
5 career playoff wins and 1 ring….
November 16th, 2019 at 9:17 am
LVD was not picked by Licht.
November 16th, 2019 at 9:27 am
Waaaay to many high draft picks by this clown that aren’t even on he roster anymore. Time to move on from him along with the QB.
November 16th, 2019 at 9:51 am
Allbuccedup is correct!
That pick is all you need to know!! Licht traded multiple picks to move up to grab Aguayo in the Second! Glazers are Football Fools! Licht has stolen millions while charading as a GM!
November 16th, 2019 at 9:58 am
Jason is a terrible General Manager. He misses badly in FA. And has made some of the most embarrassing draft trades and sections. We really reward loosing around here and it’s starts with our General Manger and unfortunately continues with our QB. Loosing is what they do folks.
November 16th, 2019 at 10:02 am
“Trash” Licht has done everything wrong. The Jameis Winston devotion will be his downfall. This man will not draft a QB ever again because he is too proud to admit he was wrong. When you begin to allow your ego to interfere with business decisions then you get in trouble.
There is no way we can pass up on a possible future franchise QB this draft.
“Trash” Licht believes he will bake the perfect cake with all these special ingredients he buys at cheap stores, fancying himself a “bargain” hunter.
This is the guy who drives all over town wasting an entire day with a bag full of coupons in order to save $10.
LOSER! DRAFT ANOTHER QB IDIOT!!!
November 16th, 2019 at 11:10 am
GM is not rocket science, eventually he’ll get this fizzling dud off the ground. Hurry up and wait.
November 16th, 2019 at 11:31 am
You can build a team or buy a team. If you buy a team you’re getting somebody else’s castaways. And you have to have cap money.
If you build a team you do it with fresh blood. This secondary will grow, if they’re coached right.
November 16th, 2019 at 12:18 pm
Licht is our biggest problem, he’s bound to get lucky on a few picks (minus the entire 16 draft class). Plus most of those decent picks mentioned were Arians anyway. #firelicht
November 16th, 2019 at 1:20 pm
This is a rare morning for me. I agree 100% with Ian.
I think D.R. has been saying the same thing for awhile now especially re our kiddie corps defensive backfield.
Again…let’s try one more time to make some sense about the draft.
First round picks have a 53% chance of success. The only place you get a break is in the top five where it’s a 77% chance. Picks 6-32 it’s roughly a 50% chance…average it all out and you come up with the 53% overall.
But hey….let’s lose some so we can get that 50 50 shot at success. And wow…if we can lose enough…we can jump up to that 77%.
BTW…who has generally (no single player examples count) succeeded with this lose for the future? The Browns? The Bucs?
Again…don’t get fooled into arguing from the general to the specific…generally we need to improve our team through the draft…thinking we’ll do it with ONE specific draft pick is a fool’s errand.
So if 50% is the high water mark in the first round and goes down from there…what is Licht’s grade…what % of his picks since he’s been here have contributed?
Some interesting reading as to why the draft is a crapshoot…things like confirmation bias etc.
