Harold Goodwin: Team Buy-In Not There Yet

November 2nd, 2019

Bucs run game coordinator/assistant head coach and offensive line overseer Harold Goodwin.

It’s Week 9 of the 2019 football season and Bucs players are still working on their buy-in when it comes to the Bruce Arians coaching stuff.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

Maybe Joe is clueless, but shouldn’t one reasonably expect the full buy-in for a two-time NFL Coach of the Year and his giant coaching staff to arrive in, say, mid-August or September?

This isn’t Father Dungy taking over as a first-time head coach in 1996. This isn’t 32-year-old Raheem Morris learning on the job in 2009. This is Bucco Bruce Arians!

Arians’ right-hand man, Harold Goodwin, Bucs assistant head coach and run game coordinator (what run game?), joined the Buccaneers Radio Network this week and explained that he feels players are still working on believing fully in their coaches.

“They sit back. They listen. And they want to know if you know what you are talking about,” Goodwin said. “And there are situations where you have have show them that you do have a clue you know what the [heck] you are are doing, and they start to buy in. I think that’s a process we’re still going through now as a staff. And the guys are starting to buy in more and more, even though it doesn’t show on the field, but we’re making progress.”

So how long does it talk for players to buy in and turn that into results on the field?

“From my past, and just different places I’ve been, it’s always like after about Week 8 or 9. It’s kind of weird how it happens that way,” said Goodwin, who added that Bruce Arians probably would say it takes until Thanksgiving before “you start to see the maturation process taking place on a team.”

Well, here we are. It’s November and the Bucs face Seattle tomorrow in a game that will either end their postseason dreams or re-ignite them.

Joe sure hopes everyone has decided to buy-in, especially after Arians lamented that his offensive line was loaded with mental and communication errors last Sunday.

They get paid millions of dollars to “buy in” what kind of weak crap is that? Can we start paying for our season tickets when the players buy in?

  2. Petty Officer Buc Says:

How can the team buy in when the head coach spends all day on a golf cart totally divested yet he has no problem acting tough and throwing players under the bus on the press podium?

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

Goodwin looks like a comedian in that pic telling a joke that only he thought was funny.

  4. Dr. J Says:

I’m not surprised to a certain extent. Anytime you experience a transition at work, it takes about a year or so to get accustomed to the new expectations of leadership compared to what you had in the past. It’s a process and I hope we start seeing consistent success and improved decision-making on the field #GoBucs

  5. Onetrickpony Says:

    Buy in?
    Buy in what?
This is getting to be a joke of a team with all this B.S.
Now go sit in the corner, until you
    “buy in “

  6. JJV Says:

The smart players would be trying to “buy out” instead. Then they can go to team that actually wins with a successful organization. Hopefully it happens for them before their careers end.

  7. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Why didn’t we claim Josh Gordon

  8. Bucnjim Says:

It’s no different than managing a corporation or a business with a large group of employees. You observe them to see who slacks off and reeks of entitlement and they observe you to see if you know what the heck you’re talking about. There are plenty of NFL coaches over their heads we see a half dozen fired every year so it’s just human nature to have them prove their worth. Smart to make a couple of examples out of the long time players who feel they’ve put in the time and know more than anyone on the coaching staff.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Absolutely, positively, laughably absurd and ridiculous. The man suould be terminated for making such a statement….

Buy in is the coach’s responsibility……do your job….don’t blame the players.

  10. Jim Says:

If your team is a perennial loser along with your QB, who throws pix on the first snap, you become jaded…

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Nice Spin by coach Goodwin here. Keep it up coach. Before long we will be calling you, The Grandmaster of the Spin!

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Meh….I thought he LOST the team already when he dedicated the BIG Rams to Jason Licht by giving him the game ball.

Players went out to LA. Fought with blood sweat and tears to win the game.

Who gets the game ball? Jason Freaking Licht.

    W……………………T……………………F?

  13. Lamarcus Says:

This is the most weirdest thing a coach has every said

1000 coaches and all are incompetent?

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Ram’s win*

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Goodwin … ““They (the players) sit back. They listen. And they want to know if you know what you are talking about.”

    We’re screwed.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

Buy In. That sounds a lot like just another excuse.

I do not believe that is the problem. I think the players believe the coaches…they simply do not believe in themselves.

For all the bravado JW is a shell of his former self. We’ve debated ad nauseum why this is the case. But I feel JW is simply emblematic of this entire team. They are shell shocked from the years of losing and bad decisions.

Again as a former athlete I hate to go to the C word…but I’m afraid I see a significant amount of choking. I appreciate BA trying to address them telling his players and in particular…just go out an play and have fun.

I don’t see guys doing that…it seems the collars on their jerseys shrink dramatically the closer the game is on the line.

  17. OBP Says:

You know it’s hard to “buy in” when the coaching staff routinely makes bad gameplans and misuses players (see Rojo, OJ, and Brate).

  18. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

“Why didn’t we claim Josh Gordon”

Because it would take him a year to buy in…

  19. tmaxcon Says:

Every day this franchise is closer to a jerry Springer season

  20. Buc1987 Says:

    Blogtalk…that was funny!

  21. TampaTown Says:

    OBP:

Great point. And bad clock management.

  22. NPRSageBoy Says:

Is this the same Harold Goodwin who was out of football after BA ” retired”?

The same Harold Goodwin who only returned to football when master BS artist Bruce Arians rang the Glazer cash register?

Can’t get players to buy in? Gee…I wonder why?

    Peace, out

  23. Tackleblockwin Says:

Playoffs? This team needs to win 3 or 4 in a row before I trick myself into thinking they have a shot at the playoffs.

  24. Slow Joe Says:

Dungy’s first time was 1-8 before they “bought in”. What Goodwin is saying makes some sense.

  25. Alanbucsfan Says:

These stories are all smoke to put a haze over the real problem-
    The Talented Turnover Machine

  26. Clean House Says:

    Disturbing comments

  27. richbucsfan Says:

It’s ok…no worries, there won’t be buy-in today, tomorrow, next week, next year. These players know all about the NFL and how to defense future HOF QB’s and how to do zone blocking to spring a running back. No coaching needed here. Sheesh…smh

  28. mickman Says:

Come on! How about you care about winning and stop blaming coaches or other people but yourself as a player. They have played long enough to know how to block. Have some pride other than collect a paycheck to go through the motions for 50 damn plays a week!

i have been a Buc fan since 1976 and I am just tired of the excuses and poor play. start cutting the people and make a damn example of them…whose next!

at least field a team that cares, i will never blame winston because at least he has the heart to try and win, but player said that run half a route or block have a block or tackle one handed or don’t know how or who to cover…cut them!

  29. orlbucfan Says:

BA better call a non-senile offense tomorrow or there will be a MAJOR PLAYER REVOLT in the locker room if we lose. We beat a SB caliber Seahawks team with a LESS talented team in Seattle with Glennon as the QB!

  30. Jmarkbuc Says:

Pretty hard to buy in to left foots high school offense, and BA’s BS…

You’ve got a corner who couldn’t make it in the XFL, and a QB who is just what he looks like… and neither one is ever out on the bench. Not for a series, and certainly not for a game.

    What’s to buy into?

  31. Bucs4821 Says:

Actually, the 2013 Glennon led Bucs led 21-0 and 21-7 at halftime. They lost 27-24 in OT. Hmm… A big lead lost by a late collapse… Sound familiar?

  32. Anonymous Says:

Iti’s optics boys. They are terrible. Arians is a guy as follows:

I am a Buc player. I know BA gets paid a lot of money and is supposed to fix problems. But he seems to favor some players who don’t deserve it, and he rides around in this freaking golf cart all through practice and yells at us after practice. He goes to media and calls us soft, support his boy, then tells us he loves us about the time the next game rolls around. We are young players and need a guy in our grill, being proactive every day, every play. Drive that golf cart and write citations and we will mail ’em in.

Of course they have not bought in.

  33. Anonymous Says:

I don’t speak opinion, only fact. Assessment is what I do. And I was waiting for this one through the next three games. But I’ll offer this. Schiano had buy-in through most of his first season and lost it. It got him fired when players quite or went off the charts (no names mentioned). But he was 6-4 with aruably a much worse team. That mark is IMPOSSIBLE for this team. Don’t talk anymore about HC of the Year Arians. He’s already retired and his golf cart and other actions show it. This is called show up and collect a pay check. Hail Greg Schiano, Raheem Morris, and Dirk Koetter. BA…FO dude!

  34. Anonymous Says:

Leftwich is a sympton. Stop blaming him. The problem is Bruce Arians, who has only been so happy to assume control from zero-head Licht. Go Bucs!

    Jameis Winston: He11 yeah!
Five more years of Licht: He11 yeah!
Bruce Arians and his Golf Cart: He11 yeah!

Buy in? Yeah, only if idiots watch these clowns.

  35. Pewter power Says:

Kind of dumb fans we have….. I’m sorry what had Josh Gordon shown to be worth claiming. He would be just like these players we have now except he’ll either quit, retire or get suspended. So what he’s talented, how many games has he played in the last 5 years. Damn people are so fascinated with names their history doesnt even matter. It’s so pathetic that it seems people think madden is real and anyone could be a gm.

  36. Tbbucs3 Says:

Every single problem the Bucs have can be traced back to Jason Lichf.

  37. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:
