Five Things

It is not just a holiday for some, it is Victory Monday. So time’s wasting.

The Dean of Rookies

Wow. After yesterday, Joe is reassessing his thoughts on rookie cornerback Jamel Dean.

A week ago in Seattle, not knowing he would start, Dean’s number got called when Carlton Davis went down. Dean proceeded to get roasted right and left in the game and was a big reason why Seattle won.

Joe didn’t get the narrative that Dean wasn’t ready. Why not? He was active, wasn’t he? Shouldn’t all backups be ready to play due to injury? If not, that tells you something is messed up at One Buc Palace.

Now in a recent Ira Kaufman Podcast, Joe wondered aloud where the pride was with the Bucs. Sure, the season was over, but why not play for your pride and for your teammates. Go out there and stop shaming yourself any further.

Well, that was Dean yesterday. And he told Joe that he knew he was better than what he showed in Seattle and was determined to prove that to the world.

And he did.

Dean had four passes defended yesterday. That’s damn near two month’s worth for some corners. Davis, for example, had four all of last season. On top of that, Dean made an acrobatic pick of Kyler Murray late to save the game for the Bucs.

So nice job Dean for turning things around so quickly. Now go out there next week against the Saints and prove you can play just as well.

All Hail The Barber

Joe has been hammering Peyton Barber the last few months. Why? He hasn’t been getting any production. Someone on Twitter went after Joe yesterday slamming Joe that he was talking trash about Barber. Not so.

Joe has nothing against Barber, only his lack of production. And when RoJo was showing more promise of late, Joe thought RoJo should be starting over Barber.

Besides, how many times can we see Barber run up the middle for nothing.

Like his teammate Dean, Barber had a bit of a renaissance. Yesterday.

Sure, Barber was run up the middle yesterday. Joe’s pretty confident we’ve seen this play too many times. But in the game-winning drive, the Bucs got a nice run out of Barber to set up a second-and-goal at the Cardinals-one, then Barber juked to his left and scored the go-ahead touchdown.

Two key plays in that drive featured Barber not being force-fed up the middle.

Times, they are a-changin.’

Hello Howard

Joe already wrote this morning how the Bucs really benefited from O.J. Howard being back at his tight end position.

Nick Saban, the Alabama-shot-caller, said he learned in high school to get the ball to your best players. Why the Bucs seem obsessed with getting Scotty Miller and Breshad Perriman the ball, and not Howard or Cam Brate, is head-scratching.

Yesterday we had a glimpse of what the Bucs’ offense can be with Howard playing an active role in the offense.

C’mon Bucs, it is not that difficult. Get Howard active as a receiving threat and good things will happen.

Change in a Year

Last year the Bucs could move the ball between the 20s but couldn’t score. The Bucs averaged 24.8 points a game.

This year? The Bucs are averaging four points a game more. That should be a big difference between winning and losing. Currently, the Bucs average 28.8 points a game.

Remember Joe explaining the 27-point goal at One Buc Palace. Through the last eight NFL seasons, teams averaged 27 or more points per game 37 times. And only five missed the playoffs.

If only the secondary was strong.

The Full Jameis

Man, did we get an entertaining, full-blown look at America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston? This guy is a high-wire act, a roller coaster. He tears you up inside.

If he wasn’t throwing picks he was throwing a touchdown. If Jameis wasn’t taking care of the ball, Jameis was juking would-be defenders out of their jocks by using an old Joe Montana fake-pump look.

Man, Jameis is pull-up-a-chair appointment viewing. Sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat drama and fun. He can be so downright frustrating at times and then quickly follow that up with brilliance.

Jameis has a habit of putting his team in position to win or tie games. But for some, they just refuse to or simply cannot see the light past the picks and never will.

You know, because Andy Dalton.

Scotty Miller made a really good catch yesterday….so, there is a 6th thing…..

  2. Buc believer Says:

Yippie Doodle! We beat (with help from the officials) a bad really bad Cardinals team. Doesn’t explain why Brucie called for the extra review AGAIN which he did not have and the plethora of other mistakes he and the players keep making over and over and over and…..

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As I pointed out elsewhere…if we had a different quarterback who threw fewer picks and scored the same number of points as Jameis does, we would be happy with him.

With Jameis, we need a strong defense…and that is alright, because many elite QBs do. Peyton Manning was unable to win a ring with the Broncos until he had a better defense, for example.

If our defense can just reduce opponent’s scoring by one td per game, we’d have a winning record.

Jameis has multiple bad habits, yes, but regardless of the haters, he still does enough to win.

  4. Adrnagy Says:

Feels good Monday victory. It’s been awhile.

Dean is a beast. I see miller’s potential. More like a humphries hybrid. Next year they will be good.

I like watching Winston.hold my breath every throw lol.

  5. Buczilla Says:

Picks and fumbles. Is Jameis worth 30+ million per year with his erratic play? Hell no. So why waste the fan’s time with this guy? He is not the second coming of Steve Young and would be damn lucky to enjoy a similar career to what Testeverde did later in his. You’ve gotta kiss the gorgeous, crazy a$$ girlfriend goodbye at some point and move on to someone that is stable (yet still hot) and restore your sanity. Let him go Joe, there are plenty of fish in the sea. 😯

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Every week JW is the most entertaining interesting Qb the league has to offer. Make grown cry

  7. The Ghost of Leeman Bennett Says:

The main problem with Winston is the 95 turnovers. Nobody else is even close to 95 turns in the same time period. Many of those turns put the defense in very difficult positions and yield easy points.

The Bucs need to decide is the 105 TDs is worth the 95 turnovers, plain and simple. The W-L record would probably suggest the answer is no and look at the total turnover count for this season, Winston leads with 17, the next closest are either rookies or second year starters.

He is in his fifth year and will never change. His two INTs yesterday, he completely stared down his intended receiver and threw directly into coverage, 100% on him.

  8. Doctor Stroud Says:

The “roasting” of Jamel Dean is like anything in the NFL: teams will keep doing what works until it stops working. Dean stepped up like a pro, and he should be congratulated (and perhaps, he and LVD should be given game balls!). Let’s hope that teams will have second thoughts about targeting him, but I doubt it.

  9. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

5 Season Joe 5 season what u see is what u get with him he will fake you all out and have u thinking we can go to the Super Bowl or playoffs and right when your about to cross the line he blows it. 5 season 5 season how long do u want to give this guy.

  10. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

U would be writing a different story about Dean if they would have thrown the flag on him.

  11. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

Jameis Winston is the biggest con artist in the NFL

  12. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

I would give my right arm to have a really good QB throwing to Evans and Godwin. Damn could u imagine Rodgers or Brady accuracy woooo weeeee, with Jamies you dont know what you gonna get day in and day out for 5 SEASONS 5 DAMN IT 5

  13. orlbucfan Says:

Hopefully, the runs-up-the-middle on first down calls will be severely limited. The team won this game. They know how good they are, and LVD sent a signal near the end. JW? Not sure. I do know Koetter called more running option plays and quick 2-minute drill type plays the first 2 years JW was here. JW feasted off of those so what’s Arians’ problem? BTW, was Brate hurt?

  14. ModHairKen Says:

Deen is a rookie. Seattle was a bad game, with a few good plays; Arizona was a good game with a few bad plays.

What other team is starting this many rookies and second year players in the defensive backfield? Give these guys time.

Barber and Lunch sucked their first two years

  15. Jim Says:

Hey a win is a win, and I’m good with that. And certainly it’s a win for Jameis too. But that said, a QB Rating of 74 and a 1 to 2 Touchdown to Interception ratio actually doesn’t cut it. Jameis played better, but not well, a mix of great plays, overthrows and interceptions.

  16. Jim Says:

More positive: Receivers, running backs, kicker, some clutch defensive play…

  17. JP_09 Says:

This team found a way to win yesterday. It’s damn sure wasn’t pretty but where others sh$t the bed someone else stepped up and made a play, yes it was only against the cardinals but in the end the team played for each other and got a victory. Using RoJo out of the backfield yesterday should help open things up and make us less predictable going forward, minus his Tua like fumble I thought he also had a good game. Wear them out with RoJo finish them off with Barber.

  18. Alanbucsfan Says:

Well Joe, you can ignore reality if you want,
But the facts are that teams with a negative turnover differential have a 65-90 pct chance of losing.
Now, if you don’t care about losing and stats are your thing, then Jameis is your guy.

  19. Coburn Says:

I’m willing to the difference on points simce last year os almost all due to a fg who can actually consistently hit most of his kicks. That’s easily at least a fg a game or 3 pts alone.. likely more.

  20. Casual Observer Says:

Didn’t Vea (at Left Tackle) provide a key block for Barber?

  21. SteveK Says:

Done with the high wire act. Can’t pay top dollar for a team to have to overcome all those damn turnovers. Let’s see us do well and win some more this year, but we won’t mowing many trying it over this damn much.

  22. SteveK Says:

Won’t win many turning it over this much*

  23. SOEbuc Says:

Dont give a crap about jameis large yardage and Big points. They all come with terrible TO. This Oline is so much better than we thought. Jameis uses 3+ seconds in the pocket and when it collapes he steps into for a sack.

  24. Coburn Says:

Soebuca agreed.. people trying to do mental gymnastics about ir defense gives up this many.. offense scores this many… then others trying to do adjusted defensive pts given based on short field etc. .. everyone forgetting the simple stats that when you consistently lose thr turnover battle you generally lose games. .. period. .

  25. miken Says:

Jameis has a habit of putting his team in position to win or tie games. But for some, they just refuse to or simply cannot see the light past the picks and never will………… These are the same people that never fully appreciated the greatness of Jay Cutler

  26. Robert Says:

told you they should stop moving the secondary around. meanwhile JW continues his inconsistent behavior.

I did not watch BTW. season is over. couple more losses, then JW will play decent garbage time ball like usual and expect a fat contract.

  27. TOM Says:

JW is not going to change anytime soon. (Mr Inconsistancy) Never know what your going to get with him. Sawdust between the ears. To me he’s already overpaid. Of course dumbass Licht is very good at over paying bad players.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

maybe if bucfan cared more about wins than turnovers the glazers would be forced to field a winner more than every couple of decades…. jameis turnovers will get cut in half when he has a competent nfl offensive line and a defense that can hold teams under 30 consistently.

  29. Buccernutter Says:

Jameis will put up some of the highest yards and touchdown numbers in the league for the remainder of his career. He will also have above average number of turnovers. You can win with that with an average defense and he’s proving he can win in the clutch.

Offense is set. Add a few pieces on the ol and we’re good for a while. Especially when we resign godwin. This offseason needs to address cb, s and dt. Keep JPP and shaq. Let suh and vh3 walk. Focus entirely on defense.

We will be a winning team in 2020. BET. Maybe even finish 8-8 or better.

  30. Buccernutter Says:

Just crazy that vea, rojo, cappa, jensen, nassib, etc were all busts or bad pick ups then we get an average or better coaching staff and these guys thrive. it was ignorant to think results would be instantaneous but yes i fell for it too. This team is trending up. some silly mental errors but things are getting much much better.

Just watch us embarrass the saints sunday.

  31. Buccernutter Says:

btw lattimore is likely out. evans is going to EAT.

  32. Jean Lafitte Says:

    You know, because Andy Dalton.

@JEan, to worse targets. with a worse O-line.

  34. NashvilleBuc Says:

Fix the secondary and we are a playoff caliber team. However, with Jameis as-is, we will be one and done. Under pressure Jameis is guaranteed to spot the other team 2-3 short yardage opportunities due to his turnovers inside our 30. That’s not gonna lead to victory against playoff caliber teams. That said – I do see improvement this year for sure. He ain’t fixed, but he ain’t as broke as he was last year. Maybe there is hope.

  35. Alanbucsfan Says:

This team wasn’t going to win any championships, but they had a shot at playoffs without the turnovers. Yes, Jameis is good enough to overcome a poor secondary to win , but not good enough with the turnovers.

Most of teams that won yesterday won the turnover battle. The one glaring exception is Falcons who had 6 sacks – now that’s some D!

  36. Kansas95Buc Says:

Its mind boggling to see that people aren’t understanding that when you throw almost 40+ times a game, you increase the opportunity for interceptions. If we can get a consistent run game and not have Winston throw all day, the interceptions would go down.

  37. unbelievable Says:

I was telling ya’ll all week that Dean had good instincts and skills.

Dean had four passes defended yesterday. That’s damn near two month’s worth for some corners.

He had 4 or 5 PDs the week before in Seattle too.

That’s more than double what VH3 has had after starting 9 games this year…

  38. down in the dirt doug Says:

The Titanic was a great ship, but it was doomed because of weak metal hull sheets and careless speed through the iceburg gauntlet.Jameis has been doomed by mental flaws ,character flaws and limited results.Jameis should be offered 15,000,000 for next year–if someone tops that—-oh so sad–and bring in a vet and rookie to compete with him.LOVE YAH JAMEIS ,BUT SCREW YOUR FRAGILE MENTAL STATE!!!!

  39. Boltsfan17 Says:

Andy Dalton has absolutely nothing to do with it. The very fact you compare Winston to a roller coaster says it all. NFL QB’s who play like that are never successful in the long term.

  40. SOEbuc Says:

Evans, Godwin, and leting howard and brate play is a freakin a-bomb reciever corps. Took them 8 fulls games to figure it out…Hopfelly.

  41. lambchop Says:

Yea, let’s forget about all the over throws that could have been points on the board and a blowout. Instead let’s focus on how strong a defense we need. C’mon man, don’t sugar coat it. Jameis played exactly like how his career has gone. Nothing new here.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

people like you are why I support abortion for adults…

  43. whaaatttsss uuuup Says:

heeeere we go again!!! he threw 2 picks against literally the worst secondary in the league!! if they weren’t the cardinals he would have single handedly -ONCE AGAIN- lost us the game before everyone even got warmed up!!! …. i mean what is going on here?? is jameis paying you? are you on the take man??… you could not have watched this much football and look at jameis and say that is our guy!! if you do you need to find a new job!! you are always always always wrong and you never admit it!!!….. anyone but the cardinals and we lose that game MAINLEY because of Winston!! put yourself in jpp shoes he just gave an encouraging speech to his defense and they heard him and just got off the field on 3rd down … they just get sat down and Winston throws his 3rd pick of the game on their own 30 for the 4th game in a row …. how motivated will you be to go back out there…. you cant have that Joe and win games consistently .. he looked average against the worst pass D in the league

  44. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Downinthedirt

Good on you for bringing creativity…what comparison…JW to the Titanic.

  45. Buccernutter Says:

Man people see interceptions, write paragraphs as to why they’re bad, and don’t even realize what happened in the play to result in the interception.

This fan base isn’t smart. It’s simple. If you want insight as to why you’re wrong listen to jameis 1of1

  46. down in the dirt doug Says:

    tmaxcon,i agree–may i recommend you go first.

  47. Buccernutter Says:

Dean is going to be elite. Watch.

  48. HUNTER LEACH Says:

@joe – Great and accurate write-up on Jameis. He can get to the next level with a balanced football team and system of continuity. Let BA get his off-season pieces and assess Jameis on a playoff / contract run for extension. Franchise talent
