Damning Quote On Leftwich

November 18th, 2019

Bad look.

Now Joe is pretty damn sure Mike Evans didn’t mean it like this.

The best receiver in Bucs history is a standup guy. He’s not going to call out a teammate publicly or even a coach, no matter how frustrated he may be.

And Evans, Joe is sure, was just giving an honest answer to an honest question. The words, however, made his offensive coordinator look like he’s taking siestas instead of breaking down film.

Yesterday, with his kryptonite, Saints cornerback Mashon Lattimore out of the game, Evans was pretty much a non-factor in the first half. One would have thought Evans, without Lattimore covering him, would break out.

That didn’t happen. Of course, it would help to target Evans once in a while rather than a third-day draft pick rookie receiver or a well-traveled former first-round pick who struggles catching the ball, or a scrub of a running back on his fourth team in two years.

But hey, that’s just Joe.

Evans was asked if the Saints were doing something different or special that prevented him from getting open.

“They did the exact same coverages they did last time they played us,” Evans said. “A lot of two-man and cover-two, almost every single snap.”

So this means one or two or three things, either Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich wasn’t able to find ways to get Evans open (or Evans couldn’t get open) or Leftwich was pushing/ordering America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to throw to the three stiffs instead of looking for Evans or Chris Godwin.

Given how much the Bucs threw to the three stiffs on a weekly basis through the previous nine games, Evans being somewhat ignored in the first half seems to fall in Leftwich’s lap.

And if the Saints were running the same coverages on Evans, someone try to tell Joe why any offensive coordinator worth his check couldn’t devise a way to get his best receiver open in said defense — it’s not like the Bucs don’t have any tape of opponents playing this defense.

Again, Joe is confident Evans wasn’t calling out Leftwich. But this is a terrible look.

Reading Evans’ words and knowing at one point in the first half the Saints outgained the Bucs 195-11 in total yards, it’s fair to ask what Leftwich was up to last week.

And if by chance Leftwich had an issue that took his attention away from finding a way to get Evans open, one of the best receivers in the game, where was this army of coaches the Bucs have on Team Glazer’s dime to pick up the slack?

Joe is pretty sure Bucs fans are finding out that quantity (large coaching staff) does not equate quality.

    This guy is clueless…..^

Bucs paid for Arians and got a learning OC…….

    bait-n-switch

    ……Thanks Bruce Arians.

After you’re done collecting your check here for the year, please do yourself a favor and retire from the BUCS cause you’re no better than Koetter.

Oh, and BTW the Brucie………your offense still stinks!!!!!

    no joe….

you cant blame BL for mike not winning his 1on1 matches against pj williams…

you cant blame BL for dotson and d.smith getting beat like a drum….

you cant blame BL for 3 of JWs INTS….

this team came out unprepared and they got out coached….the execution was piss poor….

multiple players were caught “loafing” d.smith, dotson and suh…..

will BA hold players accountable or will he continue to find scapegoats….

    GO BUCS!!!!

My son plays Jr. High Football and when he watches the game with me he calls out what Leftwich is going to do 90% of the time.
Sad when a 12 yr old has you figured out.

  5. unbelievable Says:

Leftwich playcalling is just garbage. Plain and simple.

The only game he called well through the entire game was against the Rams.

Every other week it seems like “well we’re just gonna run our same offense we always do. No reason to try creating mismatches or adjusting plays based on our opponents”.

And the crappy thing is this has basically been the MO from 3 coaching staffs in a row. They get hired and we hear “oh we’re gonna design our schemes to maximize our players’ strengths and hide their weaknesses”. But the reality is we see the same stubborn scheme on both sides of the ball, week in and week out.

Where are the adjustments? Where are the custom plays installed for specific opponents?

Now one might argue and say, wait a minute unbelievable- we’re a top 5 scoring offense. That’s correct. But we’ve lost time of possession battle in almost every game, and have had SO MANY missed opportunities in every single game, that I don’t care. This offense should be way better than it is. It should be way more consistent. It should be making better use of the playmakers and stop forcing chit plays to Dare and Perriman and Miller. But it’s not. And that falls on BL and BA.

Every play can’t either be a run up the middle or a 40 yard pass downfield.

I know we fell behind early, but 6 runs the entire game? WTF? And people really can’t understand why a QB would struggle in that situation? GTFO

Stop the social engineering Arians! Stop giving jobs to coaches who need quotas to stay employed in the NFL. Hey Arians, your network ought to be able to find or know of coaches of color who know what they are doing instead of this guy you have for an OC you are trying to set up with a job after you retire.

  9. SB Says:

Did anyone else catch the play somewhere in the third quarter I think where DS76 whiffed on a block and JW got sacked then JW said something to DS and he knocked the ball out of Jameis’ hand?

  18. R.O. Says:

Football is simple.. All teams run the same defenses and run the same plays. If a Team cannot run those plays (Off/Def) consistently and precisely and players don’t know or blowtheir assignments those plays fail. Also, the team that controls the Line of scrimmage controls the game as well. Bucs are a perfect example of all of this..

    Joe,

No matter what coach or scheme.

During Winston’s 5yr. tenure in the NFL.
If the other team has the puppies on the backend — w/Man or Zone underneath.
Winston gonna have a very bad day. He’s either getting the balls to the receivers late out of the break. Over or Under throwing them. Or holding on to the ball to long. When one or two guys are wide open.

5yrs in the league – yet its the same result.
All DeSean Jackson did was shed some more light on it.

  35. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

This is the old Air Coryell Offense is what it is, and guess what ? We lack the O Line to make it work sometimes, against a team like the Saints, with a real pass rush.
In some ways, with this O Line of ours, we would be better off running the West Coast Offense.
That offense gets the ball out of the QB’s hand fast, leading to less sack.

  36. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Reminder the one thing holding us back more then anything aside from bad QB play and no secondary.

WE HAVE NO ANALYTICS DEPARTMENT. NONE

That is why we keep making such awful game time and game planning decisions.

  37. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Chris

West Offenses are usually based on timing routes by the receivers.
So that would be a no go for Jameis Winston.

  38. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

BL doesnt deserve to be a oc in the NFL……..
WE dont deserve jason forest gump………

  39. unbelievable Says:

    @SB – I saw that too.

D Smith is giant baby that can’t handle criticism. Guaranteed Jameis finally said something to Smith about his pathetic play, and the big old baby couldn’t handle having his feelings hurt.

Ugh, this whole team is so mentally weak.

  40. Pewter power Says:

If BA and leftwich got fired it would be all BA’s fault for experimenting with a guy clearly in over his head. Good coaches dont sabotage their team this way.

  41. Robert Says:

    thx

  42. JustBucNwin Says:

This play calling experiment has to go! He’s just inept in this role as he was in Tampa as our QB!! No creativity and BA needs to take over NOW!!

Our O-line is the 2nd worst problem on our team and secondary is our 3rd! This is all on the GM for putting this crap fest together!

  43. DooshLaRue Says:

All that matters is that Jamies can relate better with Leftwich because they are/were both…..

    BLACK QBs

    Jamies said so.
And that’s really all that matters.
    Not wins
    Not fewer turnovers

Just the fact that they can both talk to each other about all the challenges they both face/d while becoming millionaires playing a game.

  44. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

….. its quite embarrassing watching when we play the Saints extemely well coached team ….. The Glazers have been Bamboozeled again ….. I am hoping The GLAZERS WAKE THE F*@%*CK UP ! CLEAN HOUSE TOP TO BOTTOM ……. STARTING WITH JASON LICKED 33%WINNING RECORD UNDER HIS TENURE ………. the sesaon is over we have 1% chance of making the playoffs we cant resign Jaymiss Winsnot….he is worth 8-10 million ayear period as a back up !!! We should bench Jaymiss develope all young talent and play for the draft.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Unbelievable … “we’re a top 5 scoring offense. That’s correct. But we’ve lost time of possession battle in almost every game, and have had SO MANY missed opportunities in every single game”.

Actually we’re now the #6 scoring offense after the Saints game, but who’s quibbling. And that’s the major argument for keeping Jameis it appears. But if you relook at the TOP battle, we’re better off than most … in 10 games, we’ve won the TOP battle 6 times & lost it 4 times (to the 49ers barely, to the Saints twice, and to the Panthers in London). And yes, we lost all 4 games.

But not because of TOP; much more-so because of the 15 TOs in just those 4 games. Interestingly 15 teams have a TOP greater than 30:00 right now (Bucs rank #7 in TOP at 31:06). ONLY THREE of those Top-15 teams have a losing record … The Bucs (3-7), The Jags (4-6) & the Chargers (4-6). Jags have a poor offense (#26), Chargers have a meh offense (#21), but both have decent defenses & neither turn the ball over nearly as much as the Bucs. Draw whatever conclusions you want from that.

You’re spot on about the MISSED OPPORTUNITIES; that’s the critical part IMO. If you give the ball to your opponents, especially via TOs, they tend to score more, you tend to score less, and end up with a lower overall TOP. Through 10 games, the Bucs have had 123 drives. They’ve ended with 29 TDs, 20 FGs, 39 Punts, 18 INTs, 6 Fumbles, 3 on Downs, and 8 Other (Missed FG, End-of-Half/Game). So of the 123 drives, 20% of them ended because of TOs. That’s not good. That’s not good at all.

  46. DBS Says:

More useless stats. The only stats that count are can we out score the other team. Answer. NO! Both sides of the ball have been bad. Most of the time it is the defense. And when the defense does the job the offense screws up. We are 3-7. Play with stats all you want. The entire team sucks.

  47. unbelievable Says:

Yeah, 20% of drives ending in turnovers is simply awful and inexcusable.

I wonder if that is a record? LOL.

I’m actually surprised about the TOP, we’re doing better in that than I had realized.

  48. Miller5252 Says:

I think instead of watching the game I’m just going to start reading the old comment section after a loss. Some of these are classic and should be hung on a wall at OneJoesPlace!! 49. chris L Says:

joe – every year we have winston we blame the coaches yet glorify the players for setting up record points and yards. so what do you want? hue jackson and andy dalton? everybody is at fault and the quarterback. nobody is telling him to throw it to the other team.

  51. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Remember how Koetter’s loyalty for Smitty gave us a terrible D for a year longer than we needed to have one?

We have the same issue. a Love Quadrangle of Arians, Leftwich, Light and Bowles.

I’d keep Arians and Bowles (I think D can be better with more offensive balance – no first downs crushed us early yesterday).

The conundrum is the BA-Light, BA-Leftwich dynamic. Will BA stay if the other 2 are shown the door?

If not, does Glazer swallow their pride and allow one more year, or do they reach for the Clorox for the whole lot. THIS IS THE CRUX! 😵

  52. Buczilla Says:

Leftwich’s “on the job training” has failed and so has Arians as the head coach. Mike Florio (thanks for recommending him Joe) was right when he said something about our year either being very good or very bad with Arians teaming up with Jameis. What a nightmare.

  53. bucs4ya Says:

It’s soo hard to understand why in a critical year for your QB you allow someone else to call the plays. I’m hoping this entire season was simply that BA wanted to see what he had not only player wise but to see if BL could call plays well. In my opinion he’s called 1 great game and I happened to be there so I’m actually thinking my presence bring victories since I was at the Chargers game as well. But seriously I’m lost as to what is going on with the play calling. Out all those coaches no one pulls BL aside and told him he needed to change things up. 8run plays is stupid I don’t care how bad you’re getting beat don’t just let a team pin there ears back there entire game. And who runs zone an entire game against Drew Brees. Never thought I’d see a pass defense worst then what we had the past few years. The best thing that has happened is the VH was cut. Here we go again talking about the draft. Please build the trenches with guys with attitude that hate losing. Tired of all these nice guys.

  54. Alanbucsfan Says:

You left out the 4th thing-

Or Jameis was making bad decisions on where to throw the ball and/or making bad throws

  55. 813bucboi Says:

d.smith helped him up, JW said something and then d.smith knocked the ball out his hand….lol…

BA calls a player out in public, releases him and then the team response by coming out flat….

seems like BA is losing the locker room…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  56. tickrdr Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS:
Always LUV your posts, and look forward to your thoughts.
    1) Agree that JW3 is NOT suited For a “West Coast” offense, since he is slow to get the ball thrown, and as such, often throws BEHIND the receivers, especially on slants and crossing patterns. Furthermore, he often doesn’t see the “underneath” coverage by LB’s etc. IMHO, he is very good at the “fastball” straight-line throws like curls and comeback routes.
    2) I saw your potential draft picks at our most likely draft slot, and I am intrigued why you did not want to draft a new QB, since your latest posts seem to indicate at least some dissatisfaction with Winston.

  57. DB55 Says:

    SB

Idk looked to me like DSmith was fixing JW shoulder pads. He slapped the shoulder pads down and hit the ball as his hand was coming down. Not sure it was malicious but wtfdik

  58. JimmyJack Says:

BLs gameplans work fine in some games. Problem I got is when it’s clearly not working like yesterday there is no ability to use different concepts.

And it’s the same freaking problem that Dirk’s offenses had. Come hell or high water they gonna call deep drop backs and they don’t care if the passrush is destroying us.

You will never contend this way because you will run into a team that can highlight your weaknesses and if you refuse to adjust you’ll get your ass kicked. Don’t come in here telling me that this QB can’t succeed if you ask him to throw it 40 times and then proceed to call 60 freaking drop backs!!!

Above all the quote above is the most damning evidence. They beat us the same way twice now. We did adjust for 8 full quarters. And the coaching staff just set back and let it happen. Utterly helpless.

  59. DalvinCookRules Says:

Not here to defend Winston, I am one of the very few on thesr boards that objectively critiques him, but coaching matters! If you think Lamar Jackson for example, would be more efective than JW you would be wrong… Most QBs need the right offensive scheme and the right personnel around them to fit their talents. Do you think Tom Brady even at the pinnacle of his career could be an effective RPO qb?

Leftwich has not put JW or our receivers in situations or schemes which maximize their talent. Winston is holding the ball too long, often because the OC can’t create the right situations that lead to guys getting open (altho there are times it is purely JWs own damm fault)

  60. Aceofaerospace Says:

The only common denominator of the past 5 years is Winston.

  61. BigMacAttack Says:

Leftwich is worse than Koetter which isn’t saying much. Todd Monkin is a good coach and play caller. They should have retained Him. He’s a lot better than this mess. BA needs to get off his A___ and do what he was hired to do. Watching Leftwich go down in flames wasn’t it. It isn’t time for Offensive Coordinator School. This team is worse than they were under Koetter. It’s hard to believe but that’s how I see it.

  62. Slugglife Says:

BL told you in advance that they were going to “try to do too much.”

Mission accomplished. 11 yards in the first half of a professional football game.

  63. Solinor Says:

Bucs O has not created an effective running game – w/ any consistency – for MULTIPLE seasons & w/ 2 different coaching staffs…Meaning it’s not just due to scheme…It’s personnel & the GM that stocked the cupboard.

Loads of yards, good PPG avg. Low on W’s.
