Chris Godwin’s YAC
November 28th, 2019The last couple of years, even with Mike Evans putting up Hall of Fame-type numbers, the Bucs stunk with YAC.
When Charles Sims and Adam Humphries are your leading YAC receivers, you know you have an issue.
(YAC means Yards After Catch.)
Some even started to hound Evans about his lack of YAC. Talk about nitpicking. What next, griping about Vita Vea’s hair being too long?
Well, even though Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich’s offense doesn’t pass the eye test, he is getting results. One way is he is helping Bucs receivers get more YAC.
Take Chris Godwin, the reigning NFC Offensive Player of the Week is one of the best receivers in the game. He is first in touchdowns (nine), second in yards (1,071) and seventh in YAC (430 yards).
For Godwin, his YAC is a source of pride.
“Obviously I’ve put a lot of work in the offseason just trying to get stronger,” Godwin said of improving his YAC. “It’s a mentality thing too. Anytime I get the ball, I’m trying to make something happen, I’m trying to score every play and try to get as many yards as I can each time I have it.”
Love that mindset. And of course, Joe loves that Godwin is physical too. He doesn’t blink about mixing it up with other players to fight for a pass.
Knowing this Bucs franchise all too well over the decades, it just blows Joe’s mind that the Bucs have two of the top three receivers in the game and a quarterback who is second in yards passing and touchdowns.
What in the name of Craig Erickson is going on?

It’s refreshing to have arguably the best WR tandem and no diva in them at all. This is something the Bucs have to build around and capitalize quickly. We cannot let those 2 down. They work too hard to waste away their careers.

Exactly! You know who may be Godwin’s biggest supporter on the team? Evans.

@Joe,
Totally agree. Mike has done countless interviews praising CG and has said they’re both legit WR1s. I’m sure he does the same off camera as well. The same goes for CG, always praising Mike. They really complement each other and they know without the other, things would be a lot harder scheme wise and with the added pressure.
They both are class acts. And for once, the football Gods didn’t poop on our heads. We are truly lucky to have them.

These two receivers are so talented, if only they had a good QB they could be top 5, wait…

One of these guys needs the other more than the other needs him… Just saying. Must be nice playing opposite a HoF”er

Ok that was harsh. Just mean that ME13 was HOF material while Godwin was still swilling Natty light in State College, with Freddy and Bobo out there with him

ME13’s biggest supporter and a fan? A certain Ungodly fellow receiver and class act of a human being. Enuff said!

Alaskan Abdominal Snowman, I don’t know to much, but isn’t the QB the one that puts the football in their hands?

These two have a great relationship.
They are going to be special.

Godwin isn’t just fighting for balls, he’s blocking LBs successfully in the running game.

Literally, Chris Godwin turns into a full blown running back, after he catches the ball !

Good rookie numbers the first year. Great jump the second year. Look at him now. Bet secondary’s look forward to him and Evans.

Blast from the past. Even Winston is better than Craig Erickson. 😅
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone.
