Bucs Made Their Own Bed
November 4th, 2019Bucco Bruce Arians had a telling comment yesterday when talking about his defense.
And there is no one else to blame for it but his own organization, or himself.
Arians was asked about what the defense must do to get better. As we all know, the Bucs secondary was shredded by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
“They just have to grow up,” Arians said. “We are really, really young. We had three rookies in the back end playing. … I love the way they competed.”
Yes, the secondary is full of rookies. And of second-year players, one of which (M.J. Stewart) was inactive for the second straight week.
Did the Bucs try to bring in a starter in free agency? Sure doesn’t seem like it. Did the Bucs try to trade for a starter? Well, we won’t know for sure unless someone has the phones tapped at One Buc Palace.
But consider that the Rams traded a corner who started in a Super Bowl on a defense that all but locked up the great Tom Brady. Yes, Marcus Peters is a knucklehead and can get burned at times — the Bucs proved that earlier this year. But don’t suggest Peters couldn’t have done a better job than poor Jamel Dean yesterday?
Peters could have been had for a box of stale doughnuts (yes, because, all together now, he is a knucklehead).
If Arians thought he could win games with this secondary, it was either a gross leap of faith, a terrible misevaluation of talent or a con job by one of his defensive coaches who sold Arians that he could coach them up.
One decent corner — not an All-Pro, just a veteran starter who can fend for himself — and this team is still in a playoff hunt.
The Bucs made their own bed with this secondary. Now, they are sleeping in it.
It’s a damn shame that the secondary has Pearl Harbored the entire team and could cost someone or some people their jobs come January.

from what I saw they were on their men, beat by excellent throws. They have talent and aren’t running around chasing butterflies like in years past. Keep them in, bench the turnover machine and see what happens!
November 4th, 2019 at 11:21 am
Joe
One decent corner….
Exactly!
November 4th, 2019 at 11:22 am
more proof that I am always right…. the glazers have ZERO intentions of fielding a competitive team and they don’t have to…. low standard bucfans will continue to accept failures with excuses and smiles….

Starting with Vh3
Arians banked on him the most and now he is not even a top 2 corner on the team.
Season is over. Keep Dean and Bunting out there and maybe Ryan Smith in the slot. But truly there is no fixing this right away.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:23 am
Joe, what makes you think this organization would have made the correct decision in free agency or at the trade deadline. How did TJ Ward work out? Backstabbin’ Jason Licht is inept. The only person that has Pearl Harbored this team is Jason Licht.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:23 am
I love this clown show! ^^^^
Grow up????
Isn’t this the NFL…..aren’t they supposed o be before getting drafted?????
what am I missing here????
November 4th, 2019 at 11:28 am
Wasn’t this more so Jason Licht on the Con Job then any of his coaches for convincing him the refuse he built is a good team.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:31 am
Bucs shat their own bed alright…led by Licht Weight & Assoc.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:36 am
When your QB leads the league in turnovers since 2015, one vet corner won’t save you. When your GM would rather draft DB, after DB, instead of pass rushers, you’re not going to win many games. The proof, our record under Licht, and America’s turnover machine Jameis Winston. Fire Licht.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:44 am
BA is a horrible talent assessor. Just look at his drafts in AZ; there a lot of busts
Jason Licht was part of that talent evaluation process. Just look at the drafts under Licht. You can count on the fingers of one hand how many good players Licht drafted and still have fingers left.
Both BA and Licht are full of $hit and need to be dismissed.
Enough already. Time to start over like an expansion franchise.
Peace, out.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:54 am
Licht is a hell of a salesperson to sell Arians to come here and to get an extension from the Glazers.
Lot of rookies come in and play well right away! It takes a special kind of retard to miss on 7 DB’s drafted
Until they draft better the d will be awful
November 4th, 2019 at 11:59 am
Joe should be nominated for a Pulitzer prize for finding numerous ways to write “Our Secondary $ucks”
Now….what to do…..well, I would play SMB and Dean as much as possible with a dose of Ryan Smith…….VH3 should stay at nickel until he is cut.
We need to see what we have or don’t have with SMB & Dean….I think Carlton Davis is OK.
November 4th, 2019 at 12:03 pm
Wow standards around here are at an all time low.
November 4th, 2019 at 12:06 pm
@Tmax What do you suggest us low standard , excuse laden Bucs fans do ? Stop rooting for the team ? Root for a different team ? Spend more time trolling people on JBF ? Please , I’m open to any and all suggestions .
November 4th, 2019 at 12:09 pm
I had this team at 8-8 before the season. Probably looking at 5-6 wins total. Hoping to see improvement in all facets the last 8 games. Aside from that 5 game stretch in 2016 this defense with a huge turnover in players is still bad.
They say the biggest improvement comes from year 1 to year 2. Hope they are right with this young secondary.
November 4th, 2019 at 12:11 pm
Hence, there is no need to talk about talent when organizationally they decided it was better to “”contend” for a SUPER BOWL by playing a bunch of rookies and inexperienced players.
Winning starts at the top.
Does this top spell winning to you??
November 4th, 2019 at 12:16 pm
BA letting JW bury himself so his secondary has experience next year and we get a REAL QB!
November 4th, 2019 at 12:17 pm
We already have America’s Knucklehead. We definitely do not need another one.
November 4th, 2019 at 12:27 pm
They’re going to have to find some money to bring in a quality veteran Safety and CB for 2020.
They also have to find a way to keep some guys like Barrett, JPP, Nassib and Suh.
Not sure how they’ll do it…
They must fortify the trenches in the draft, they need help on the O-Line and D-Line/OLBs.
If Winston keeps playing the way he did yesterday, they’ll at least franchise tag him for 2020, but that’s an additional ~$6-7,000,000 over what they paid him this year.
They will certainly need a quality QB (draft or FA) too.
A lot of needs this offseason.
November 4th, 2019 at 12:31 pm
Oh don’t leave out right tackle !!! How does Licht enter a season like this when any person in his position could have gotten a starting corner and drafted a right tackle . Total BAFOON !!! I don’t know that you could enter the season and not address these so so obvious issues without trying ??
November 4th, 2019 at 1:50 pm
Tmaxcon is speaking truth.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:56 pm
LICHT IS LICKED ….. 66% LOSING PERCENTAGE UNDER HIS TENURE …NICE !! HEY IF ITS NOT BROKE DONT FIX IT…..
November 4th, 2019 at 1:59 pm
I would venture to guess he’s talking about the “Awwww shucks, we’ll get ’em next time” kind of people coupled with the kind I see on Twitter saying things like, “I’m tired of the negativity and if you don’t like what this team is doing root for another team” folks. In the pro wrestling business they call these people marks. No matter how bad a team is doing they’ll keep forking over their hard earned money and believe that cheering for the home team makes a difference in on-field performance.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:59 pm
So a veteran corner makes up for incompetent ownership, an inept GM, and terrible players. Yeah, if only the Titanic had that carbon fiber deck chair…
November 4th, 2019 at 3:13 pm
Why in the world would a 2-win team trade a valuable pick (Top 10 slots, for sure, in each round) for one top-notch DB? One DB will make no difference in this lost year, as this team is heading for a 4- or 5-win season at best. Maybe Minkah Fitzpatrick will make a difference for PIT this year. We would need Ronnie Lott AND Ed Reed AND Ronde Barber — all in their primes — for any help in 2019.
November 4th, 2019 at 3:23 pm
On a positive note. We did not see a lack of effort from the players yesterday. They played hard but just don’t have enough talent/experience currently to win. The reason I mention this is we have seen this team completely give up on defense in past years. That to me is the most frustrating thing.
November 4th, 2019 at 3:54 pm
This is 100% the fault of BA and Jason Licht.
Banking on Hargreaves, a complete bust, who has shown absolutely nothing in 4 years, to be our #1 guy and lead a bunch of rookies is about as idiotic as you can get.
But then again it’s the Bucs, so I guess that’s just par for the course.
November 4th, 2019 at 4:59 pm
Joe … I agree with TBBF. You’ve set the bar really high for finding new & ever more creative ways to say ‘The Bucs’ Secondary Sucks’. And in the process managed to enlighten, oh yes, no one. Too much Pablum. Thank heaven for Ira.
Yes they gave up a lot of points yesterday. But when you really dig into it, this defense as a whole played quite well. Big plays killed us, like they always seem to.
o 2nd qtr … Pass interference on a deep pass defended by Devin White led to a 38 yd penalty, ball at TB 1 then Seahawks score TD.
o 3rd qtr … Carson 59 yd run to TB 26 yd line, followed by complete deep pass in the middle for 22 yds, ball at TB 1 then Seahawks score TD.
o 3rd qtr … Complete deep pass right side for 30 yds gets Seahawks into TB territory and they have to settle for a FG 4 plays later.
o 4th qtr … Jameis’ fumble gives Seahawks ball on TB 15 yd line; defense holds & 5 plays later Seattle has to settle for another FG.
o 4th qtr … Complete deep pass right side for 53 yds results in a Seahawks TD.
o OT … Complete deep pass left side for 29 yds gives Seahawks ball on TB 6 yd line; 2 plays later Seattle scores TD and wins.
Add just those 6 plays up & they total to 231 yds, almost half of Seattle’s 492 total yds. They scored 3 TDs & 2 FGs off those big plays AND our 1 turnover. Any one of those was the difference in the ballgame (Bucs would’ve won in regulation if any one of them had not happened). Winning teams make BIG PLAYS. Losing teams let them.

Joe
Whoever writes Seahawkbucfans is not whining today over the Seahawks secondary which may actually be worse than ours.
That’s because THEIR QB has touch on his passes, poise, and the athletic ability and speed to escape a rush when his mediocre OL fails him. JW was playing behind the 6th best line…Wilson behind the 16th best line according to the NFL stats.
http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=2&statisticCategory=OFFENSIVE_LINE&conference=ALL&role=TM&season=2019&seasonType=REG
Carson is better than ROJO…Seattle has a great WR in Lockett..we have TWO.
The major difference in the game was at QB! And for a change it was NOT because JW sucked..he played well…but he is NO match for Wilson…Wilson freaking WON THE GAME…that’s the difference.
JW played well..he gave us a CHANCE to win…Wilson played great and WON that game. No shame for JW…simple truth…JW is not a Messiah…he’s not in the same class as Wilson Mahomes and others.
I’m not saying absolutely dump JW…but can we at least agree he is not talented enough to carry the Bucs…IMHO if he plays like yesterday at least he won’t cost us games.
We did not LOSE that game yesterday…Wilson BEAT us.
November 4th, 2019 at 5:34 pm
oh please joe… i have been reading this sight for awhile just because you are an insider and get to ask questions to the coaches… you are of course too much of a sissy to ask the tough questions then get on here and act hard…. but that aside i am sick of seeing you take ANY POSSIBLE reason you can to take the blame off of Winston!! First, Joe has written many articles that do not defend Jameis. You ever read Joe call Jameis something more than an average overall NFL starter with a lot of potential in the past year? No. You ever read Joe demand the Bucs give Jameis a multiyear extension to lock him up long term? No. As for the “tough questions,” Joe is not a sissy. But understand that Joe is only going to ask questions that Joe trusts the answers to, and a lot of times that does not come in front of the cameras. Small example. Recently Joe shared a story that there was more to the story about Mike Edwards being a healthy scratch when Andrew Adams was starting. Joe was torched by a lot of people who said Joe was an A-hole because Arians said Edwards was nursing a hamstring issue. Well, Edwards came off the injury report the following week after being a healthy scratch and didn’t take a snap one defense in the next game.–Joe
yes Jamel Dean -A ROOKIE IN HIS FIRST START- got toasted by possibly the league MVP and was part of a team effort to lose on defense … Winston on the other hand has SINGLE HANDEDLY cost us the season with the 4 games he (again single handedly) lost himself with stupid ass decisions he has done over and over and over and over …… i think you wait and hope the defense plays bad so you have a scapegoat to push the blame off of your boyfriend… Winston lost us the season loooong before this game!! and of course he is going to come in now with no pressure since the playoffs are out and play lights out because he has no pressure on him to succeed!! you are the one in denial joe!! bunting played his ass off, white played his ass off…. the defense is getting better .. can you REEEEALLY look at this season and say Winston has gotten ANY better? he has had 2 good games and we won one of them what does that tell ya….. stupid!!!! Yes, all these defensive players played their ass off while the team got carved up. Got it.–Joe

More than youth, it’s talent. These guys were drafted out of position and now we’re paying the price for the inept talent evaluation.
Does anyone really think MJ Stewart, Jamel Dean, SMB are going to turn into probowl players a few years from now?
I’m not buying it. SMB has shown some flashes, but he still doesn’t look like a good use of a 2nd round pick.
Jason Licht has no clue about the draft, but it’s not only on him. There is a number of people who are involved in draft assessment and decision making.
