Bruce Arians Talks Jameis’ Future

November 11th, 2019

Future still unknown?

Quite a few vocal Bucs fans believe they will be celebrating New Year’s Day three days earlier this winter.

For on Dec. 29, at roughly 4 p.m., it may as well be midnight on New Year’s Eve. These same folks are stocking up already on fireworks and booze and are starting to get goosebumps thinking of the woman they may tongue that afternoon.

Why all of this giddy anticipation? For it will be then, these same people believe, that will be the last time they ever see America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, in an ugly Bucs uniform.

Of course, the Bucs host the Dixie Chicks that afternoon to close the 2019 season. And since Jameis’ current contract expires, that could be his final game with the Bucs.

Now yesterday, hot dog eating contest-protesting, mock draft-scowling, L.L. Bean-wearing, Second Amendment abolitionistMike Florio-arguingparrot-insensitive, chewing-with-his-mouth-open, soup-gulping, California train-romancinganti-football proliferationouthouse-admiringairline-nappingsteerage-flyingYogi Berra-worshipingurinal picture-takingvideo game-playingTaylor Swift-listeningpickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowningAllie-LaForce-smittenBig-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerking, craft beer-chugging, cricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-honkfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training, Budweiser-tolerant, baseball scorecard-keeping social activist Peter King of NBC Sports spoke with Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians after Tampa Bay beat the Cardinals.

Arians explained to King that if Jameis plays like he has recently, Arians could envision the Bucs re-signing Jameis for next year, and beyond.

I asked Arians if he was sure Jameis Winston, in his fifth year and entering an offseason when the Bucs have to decide whether to pay him market money, would be the Bucs’ quarterback of the future. “He’s taken us down the field to win or tie the game the last two weeks in the last two minutes,” Arians said. “That’s the maturity of a young quarterback you’re looking for. If he plays like he has the last two weeks for the rest of the season, I’d say there’s a really good chance.”

Arians also left out the fact that Jameis marched the Bucs down the field in the final seconds of the Giants game and had Arians not taken his foot off the gas, it’s not impossible to believe Jameis would have scored a touchdown to win the game.

Instead, Arians played turtle and rookie kicker Matt Gay missed a chip shot field goal and the Bucs lost.

A quarterback who puts his team in position to win, even with a secondary so bad it makes a Bucs fan want to punch a hole in the wall near the beer fridge, isn’t that the type of guy fans would want?

So the Bucs just played their ninth game of 2019 and it seems from Arians that Team Glazer may be undecided on Jameis. Still.

Joe would guess by the end of November that Team Glazer should know which way to go: draft a quarterback or keep Jameis.

After all, the Bucs play five games in December. What exactly would Jameis’ play in December tell Team Glazer that they don’t already know based on 4 1/2 seasons?

  1. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

This is gonna get interesting. I’m hoping he plays his way to an extension but I’m in the minority here. Burrows/Tua will be long gone to Cincy and potentially Miami if they just stop winning already. 🙂

  2. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Reminder that Winston’s TD to INT and completion % would literally be inverted if it wasn’t for his two top 5 WR’s.

  3. Coburn Says:

I don’t feel like what we saw against cards is a good example or what we want… besides the interceptions too many 3 and outs against a bad cardinals defense in the 2nd half. If dean doesn’t make that play his last minute heroics don’t matter. Shouldn’t need that again such a bad team.. shows how low the bar is set

  4. johnny Says:

i’d use every bit of data i could get if i’m the Glazers. Although i lean “get rid of him” today, I could still change my mind (again). I wanna see him play every play on offense, then make the decision when i have to, not before.

  5. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Gee…won’t make any difference what I say or think…and that is really frustrating 🙂

  6. Oregonbucsfan Says:

Jameis play is very good or very bad. Name another playoff team that one cannot predict a close approximation of his game day play. Often one QB plays very well and the other a little less than normal. BUT, not like this. The difference between good and extremely bad are on display almost every game with him. I’d rather have a Brad Johnson with less skills but is steady and not a game killer when he is off.

  7. BrianBucs Says:

If Winston played every game like he has played the last couple of games then I would have absolutely no problem with them keeping him.
The problem with Winston is consistency. Half the time he plays like Tarzan, half the time he plays like Jane.
Winston can have a very good clean game and then follow it with a 5 turnover clunker.
Winston single handedly costs the Bucs 4-6 games per year. So he probably had a couple of those to go yet this year.
Bucs have to figure out how to always have the good Winston, eliminating the bad Winston, or it’s time to move on.

  8. TexBuc Says:

My vote if it matters is keep Winston, and I would keep any player on the team until I can replace with better. The only QB I like is Burrow and he will be 1st overall pick in my opinion. We would be better off trading down and taking top rated OL, DL, DB, RB, and build depth.

  9. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Reminder that it’s better to settle on a passer then try to get a perfect one. Winston’s Wild ride is way too inconsistent for any team. right now any rookie aside from Burrow would do just as well and we could pay to fix other parts of this team.

  10. Capt. Reality Says:

He missed at least 4 over the top throws yesterday. Most by 6-8 yards.
He can look really good then really bad. Plus his inability to hit open receivers
deep. Makes him not worth 20 mil per. Time to draft another 1st QB on a rookie contract. There will be some good ones in the draft, Just need to figure out which one.

  11. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

I’ll admit, I wanted Jamies gone the start of THIS season. So no one can accuse me of being a Jamies jerker, but I’m starting to feel different. I want Winston here! We all do! So let’s support our quarterback!

  12. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

What would the rest of this season tell us what we don’t already know? Winston is a bust. To borrow from Miken….Winston WILL win the game….just not sure for which team.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

Jameis has earned his parole from this minor league franchise…. free jameis

  14. Lamarcus Says:

These type of things is why we are the NFL laughing stock.

Seems like they can’t make a decision because of all the other bad decisions.

Go ahead. Give a another team a starter Qb while we search again for another guy

  15. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

When he wins he still looses. Because some “fans” insist on being mad.

  16. Lamarcus Says:

If JW was as dumb as some ppl claim he would resign here

If he is that smart Mofo that I think he is ….. He will not resign here.

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

“He will be franchised tagged next year

    $28-29 mil”

    Kobe Faker

  18. Rojas Says:

Burrow and Tua will be gone by the time we pick, maybe even Herbert if someone trades up. Our best bet is to trade down and build the teams Oline, Dline and Secondary.

  19. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

Another year of Jamies would be a Christmas miracle.

  20. BucsBandit Says:

    ***REJOICE***

This turd Winston is LONG GONE!

Arians knows it. Licht knows it. The Glazers know it.

Think about it… this is Jameis’ 5th year… they have plenty of data on him. Arians also has had a chance to coach him play 9 games…

If jameis had a snowballs chance in hell at being extended, Arians would say something like, “We believe in Jameis and still think he’s only going to get better.”

But Arians’ answer of “There’s a really good chance” is simply POLITICS. Especially with him saying should Jameis continue to play well the rest of the way. Arians already knows Winston is LONG GONE.

Reading between the lines he’s saying even if Winston plays well the rest of the season, there’s still a possibility he WON’T be resigned. Otherwise he’d say something more like, “If he plays well the rest of this season he should be resigned” etc.

    BYE BYE JAMEIS.

  21. BrianBucs Says:

So many things involved in this decision.Would it be better to let Winston walk, draft a rookie on a rookie deal and use that 20 Million to plug the Bucs many holes with better players?
Would a highly drafted QB raise enough excitement in the fan base to fill those thousands of empty seats ar Ray Jay?
You can bet the Glazers, Licht and Arians will look at it from all angles.
The Glazers know that the vast majority of Bucs fans don’t want Winston as the QB here. We’ll see how that affects their decision

  22. ben Says:

WHY …is Fitz is rated much HIGHER then Winston.. by the nfl qb rating?? ..The excuses will continue but the bucs need to do better .

  23. tmaxcon Says:

No player should be subject to the cruel and unusual punishment that is playing in Tampa for glazers…. playing for bucs is a punishment not a privilege…. knowing that you have no shot year in and year out is worse than death penalty

  24. DB55 Says:

All I know is he got sacked on the second play of the game and threw a pick on the third play of the game. I wonder if there’s a correlation?

  25. Wesley Says:

    He’s just not good enough.

  26. PUGS&BUCS Says:

So many people want to dump Jameis … none of them can say in favor of who?

    • The Bucs have no backup waiting in the wings. Griffin could not secure the backup job for himself and people think he’s a starter.

•You can get your choice of a smattering of Journeymen: the Bortles, Gabbert, Fitzpatrick, Moore, Tannehill group…. none of which will “find it” and be better than JW.

•You can DRAFT a QB, great. You’re wasting the prime years of Mike Evans, Godwin, Howard, Brate while it takes about 50 games for the new QB to find his footing. Not to mention with 3 wins, the Bucs are probably going to be in the 10-13 range for a pick at the end of the season. So you’re getting a Josh Freeman type.

•You can sign another team’s backup. So you get a Mike Glennon. Another crap shoot.

The best option is re-sign Jameis, fix the defense (somehow) and get him a RUNNING GAME so he’s THROWING less. The one year he had a 1,000 yard rusher, he barely missed the playoff and had a winning record (thanks crappy defense).

  27. TexBuc Says:

1st round drafted QB success rate is only 36.8 and I believe the Bucs will not be drafting in the top 10. Again when you look at Winston did move the Bucs to within FG range in the Giants game only to have to kicker miss and then to have a clear fumble recovery for a TD negated by the Ref’s in the Titan game the Bucs clearly COULD be 5-4 now.

  28. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

What’s market value for a QB with 94 turnovers in 65 career games?

Can’t over pay for an average at best QB

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    Wesley

Its Tampa ryan leaf is good enough for this small market embarrassing sports franchise

  30. TexBuc Says:

    Well said PUGS

  31. Dewey Selmon Says:

Say what you want about Winston, but don’t call him a bust. Leaf, Jamarcus and Johnny football are busts. Winston didn’t flame out in 2 years. How many busts have 100+ TD passes in the NFL?

  32. Buc@fan Says:

If he plays well the rest of the season tag him for next year and get a better right tackle. Fix the back end of the Defense and lets see what happens. You can never win in this league with high turnover. Championships have been won with QB’s worse than Jamies

  33. Robert Says:

they re-sign him and I’ll never watch another bucs game if you paid me.

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Back to the Giants game…….there was no time left on the clock for the Giants to score…..you have a chip shot field goal to win…..you simply don’t risk a turnover by trying to score a TD when it is unnecessary.
Most if not all NFL or College coaches would have kicked the FG to win…
Gay missed…. leaving it up to speculation but that is all it is.

It is my opinion that Joe wanted Jameis to be given the chance to win the game…..so he could live up to his “America’s QB”

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Jameis can win games for the Bucs. But we gotta really fortify our Defense to help him. We have and are showing, we cannot/will not win most of the shootouts. Defense has got to be Kick-butt for us to win. Unless we know we can get a better Qb in the draft, Keep Jameis for now.

  36. TexBuc Says:

So everybody thinks these are nothing stats?

    Games 65, 61.3 completion, 35 att a game, 17393 yards with 7.6 avg,
267.6 avg per game, 105 TD, 72 INT,
    9 rushing TD
    17 fumbles

Fumbles by QB’s are not in their passing stats because most can be attributed to pass rusher sack striping the ball. I see a couple every week in the NFL.

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Tampabaybucfan is right & Joe is wrong. You absolutely play for the FG in that Giants game. It’s a no brainier.

Making a kick that closely is almost a sure thing. Lots can go wrong with running a play their…….including a pentalty which makes a FG harder.

That said Arians still deserves blame for taking a dely of the game pentalty.

  38. TexBuc Says:

Most important STAT Winston is only 25 YRS OLD.

  39. Hodad Says:

In the middle of his fifth year, we’re all sure about one thing, we’re not all sure about Winston, and that should frighten everyone. Right now he leads the league in interceptions. We won yesterday, but you could still argue the rookie out played Jameis. If I’m the Bucs I’m drafting a QB. They need to add new blood there. Then draft trenches.

  40. Rayjay1122 Says:

As long as Licht is GM, I don’t give a crap who the QB is. Team is doomed either way.

  41. lambchop Says:

    @PUGS&BUCS,

You obviously haven’t heard of Mahomes, Watson, Lamar, etc. Literally, I could go on.

Only in sports, where you REWARD someone 25M+ for being inconsistent, to not disrupt the status quo out of fear, and to be complicit being statistically in the bottom third when compared to your contemporaries because he flashes once in a while. Yes, more money is the best motivation for a guy like that to get better. I wish my job was like that. Get paid on potential.

This offense is a plug n play system QB from scoring — A guy who doesn’t try to be a hero.

  42. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    @Tex

    22 lost fumbles

    Awful decision making
Inaccurate passes and bad ball placement as well which leads to turnovers

I loved the pick and wanted him drafted but after 65 games fans shouldn’t still be questioning IF he’s a franchise qb

  43. BigMacAttack Says:

No matter how well Jameis plays, he isn’t worth the money. It makes no sense to gut the team so they can pay Jameis market money. It’s Down right stupid. They need to keep Suh, JPP and Barrett. They can easily get a rookie QB who can replace Jameis and save big money. They can shed dead weight in other areas to improve the team as well. Hargreaves is a failed project. Brate isn’t needed. The list goes on. No matter what happens in the remaining games, Jameis needs to go.

  44. Fartman Says:

I don’t think this game was Winstons best game by any stretch… missed a lot of big throws… and the obligatory turn overs. Every once and awhile he will wow you with a throw, but over all he just doesn’t seem that accurate.

  45. Jean Lafitte Says:

With Jameis 1 of 1 all up in their business we’ll probably never rid ourselves of the most polarizing QB to ever don the “ugly” uniform.

  46. tmaxcon Says:

You people do realize with barrett’s agent there is less than 10% bucs are even a consideration for barrett. Every week barrett plays well makes it less likely he will return…no one chooses bucs if they have options

  47. BigMacAttack Says:

Licht is without a doubt the worst GM in the NFL. He couldn’t even make it as a scout on other teams. Useless

  48. BigMacAttack Says:

The mere fact that the Bucs won demonstrates just how bad the Cardinals are. That was probably our last win of the season. 3-13 here we come.

  49. TexBuc Says:

    Section312

my source is NFL.com QB stats

passing stats and a fumbles stat from 2015-2019 is 17 fumbles lost.

Some sites count all fumbles which is not counted as team/game total but only a fumble lost counts as a turnover against a team stats and against individual fumbled.

  50. Jean Lafitte Says:

We keep Jameis I see another losing season. His salary will negate our spending.

  51. TexBuc Says:

QB accuracy has a LOT to do with how clean the pocket and how many QB hits and sacks. Winston has never been or will be a season completion rate top 10. Winston is coached in this offense (4 vertical) to read the safety and look for the deep route 1st and work his way back. He will never be a 70% QB in this offense.

  52. Ken G Says:

What is the market for the 24th rated starting QB in the league? A guy who in his 5th year is having his worst statistical season in the key statistical categories (Passer rating/QBR/turnovers/interceptions)? You can literally find any backup in the league and get equal or better numbers at 1/5th the price. So why is this even a discussion? Part of the reason the team is so bad is that is has $20M into a QB who is wildly overpaid. His trend lines are getting worse even as the skill talent around him gets better. If he plays all 16, his turnovers will finish second all time in franchise history (only behind Vinny’s infamous season of 35 picks). Attendance is down. You can sell the people a “shark” sandwich forever. Give me anybody but Jameis.

  53. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Pugs

How do you “somehow” fix a defense if you waayyyy overpay a below avg. QB?

  54. JimmyJack Says:

BigMac……Does that same logic dictate how bad the Rams & Panthers are too?

In reguards to your prior post I have a better solution then gutting the team to pay for Winston. Use Hargreaves money. Boom done…….Even if you still don’t wanna pay Winston it will likely be the same money is my guess. I think Bruce will want a experienced QB. Stafford or Carr via trade would be on my radar.

  55. BucsBandit Says:

    ENOUGH, YOU HOMERS!

Stop trying to use “We don’t have anyone else to replace Winston” as some sort of reason to keep Winston. That’s a massively failed logical argument.

It’s about the SALARY CAP. Keeping Winston would require a $25M-$35M/year commitment, if on a one year franchise tag. That’s just DUMB. He’s no where near that much money.

The Bucs are NOT going to the Super Bowl in the next 1-2 years no matter what miracle occurs. So it doesn’t matter if Winston is the QB or some a rookie that we draft. But the only way the team gets better is to start filling many of the holes we have and bringing in some new players.

The Jameis Winston Experiment HAS FAILED. He just didn’t get it done. He just didn’t do enough. His mistakes and turnovers just can’t be overlooked.

It’s time for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to MOVE ON to a post-Jameis Era.

If the Glazers want to re-energize the fan base, and get people coming back to games, there’s no better way to do it than with a new, exciting young QB prospect and a New Era in Tampa Bay.

  56. tmaxcon Says:

    Ken g

Attendance means nothing to glazers that’s chump change compared to nfl wealth redistribution system…. nfl revenue sharing grom tv revenue is all glazers need or care about. glazers have zero incentive to field a competitive product. Small fanbase which has been trained to accept losing and call 500 football with no hope in post season glory years… no expectations in Tampa. You have to try this hard to be this bad…. anyone with hope or who actually believes the glazers are trying should seek immediate medical attention

Free jameis he’s earned parole from this minor league franchise with no hope

  57. TexBuc Says:

    Ken G
Yet we still have the #2 and #4 WR in Yards, average 28.5 points a game, #7 in passing TD’s with the last rated pass defense.

So we can’t have all these good stats without acknowledging the person delivering the ball on the offense. Passing defense is a bigger issue than Winston’s stats.

  58. Tye Says:

It will be the darkest day in Bucs history if they prove to be that ignorant BUT will rightfully deserve every lose that they get from that then on…

Anyway, the ironic thing will be all the people I know that have complained over the years About Tampa being filled with fans of other teams… The Bucs sign JW and the number of people in Tampa that will be instantly turned into fans of other teams will be enormous… Football season could get quite obnoxious if thousands more become fans of other teams..

  59. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He’d better improve over the last couple games. If this is his ceiling, we eed a new QB.

  60. Bucsmarley Says:

Let Winston go please. Nothing worse than a completely inconsistent qb
Trade down in the draft. Get Ol,DE,QB,Rb
Ide be fine drafting Fromm or hurts in the second round.

  61. Bucsmarley Says:

Oh and obviously get a FA corner back since we can’t pick them or coach them

  62. TexBuc Says:

    Bandit
We can never build a team with depth if we keep starting over. Better off trading down next draft for OL, DL. pass rusher, and RB than drafting a QB in the 1st.

  63. BigMacAttack Says:

Joe, why do you criticize the fans that want Jameis gone? What does Mr. Inconsistency have on you? They can’t afford to pay him and get better players. Isn’t 5 years enough time to see that he is not a top tier QB? Maybe if Licht wasn’t so incompetent at managing the cap, they could afford him, but why? If Arians can’t see the mess he’s in as Head Coach then he needs to go too. What remaining games are winnable? Atlanta? Doubtful IMO. Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley will shred this secondary. They traded Sanu for a second round pick while Licht did nothing. The chances of Licht keeping Jameis and continuing to lose have to be upwards of 90%.

  64. Tye Says:

Would have to become double 0 7 secret agent fans of the Bucs or publicly get shamed for ignorantly being a fan of perennial losers!

  65. BigMacAttack Says:

JJack the Panthers fixed their problem by replacing Cam. We beat them when Cam was playing hurt. The Rams are 5-4 so no. The Bucs have got worse as the season has progressed and Jameis will have good games. Yesterday wasn’t one of them. The Bucs got lucky. If not for the Evans overturned no DPI call, they would have lost again. I was on board to start the season but the Bucs again have proved me wrong, a naive homer. Arians needs to go too. He should be calling plays. The Bucs will finish the season 3-13 and not win another game.

  66. TexBuc Says:

At 55 yrs old I have only EVER rooted for one team the Bucs. Every time we run out a QB and move on we rarely every find one better and we keep losing. Top ten offense worry about how to improve passing defense and getting better with our run game.

  67. TexBuc Says:

    BigMac

Winston has thrown too many INT’s. Having said that Gay missed the FG resulting in a loss to Giants as time ran out and a Ref blew whistle on a CLEAR fumble recovery for a TD resulting in a loss to Titans. We should be 5-4 not 3-6!

  68. Ken G Says:

Tex Buc: Your passing stats get inflated when your QB starts games with turnovers, you get behind and you chase the score all day long. When you look at cold-blooded passer metrics like passer rating and QBR you can see I’m not making this up: he’s in the bottom 3rd and making $20M, eating up a good portion of the cap that could be allocated elsewhere. And he’s getting worse turnover wise. He’s the opposite of complimentary football.

  69. JimmyJack Says:

Actually we were the team that officially knocked Cam out for the season and perhaps ended his career in Carolina……..Don’t misrepresent that because I am danged proud of it.

But please don’t play the if game about wins because I could do the same for losses. Let’s just accept the results as they are. We got 3 wins and are primed to rip up the Saints this week and start surging.

As far as saying Arians needs to just I’ll just pretend I didn’t read that.

Now enjoy the rest of the season.

    GO BUCS!

  70. Adrnagy Says:

    Robert Says:
    November 11th, 2019 at 4:29 pm
they re-sign him and I’ll never watch another bucs game if you paid me.

I would this to happen. That way your lazy fan head will go cheer another team.bandwagon

You support your team no matter what !

  71. TexBuc Says:

    Ken
These are NOT my passing stats they are actual stats from FoxSports!

Top ten offense can get better but the issue is we cannot STOP the pass!

I guess you don’t remember how inept out offense has been before Winston arrived, but I remember CPT checkdown on 3rd down throwing a 2 yard pass on 3rd and 9 coming up short repeatedly

  72. JimmyJack Says:

Tex Buc…… Repeatedly searching for QBs is defientally a bad sign…….In recent years a larger problem has been trading out entire coaching staffs every two years.

Everytime this happens we gotta redo the roster all over again. And then fans complain why we drafting all these DBs? How many times do we gotta go through this til we learn……..Yet now many fans wanna foolishly run off an entire nother coaching staff……..This time after only 7 games(less for some). Some fans aren’t getting smarter there getting dumber.

  73. Clw JB Says:

BA loves him, unless he implodes he is getting a 3 year deal at mid market -a la DSmith

3 yrs – 22 mil per, 30-40 guaranteed – its a two more year prove it deal that happens to coincide with BA’s shelf life as a coach…

  74. destinjohnny Says:

we are 3 -4 good drafts away
doesn’t matter who the qb is

  75. JimmyJack Says:

Bucs fans could be a little more sports savy. You don’t even have to look outside our own city to see that new coaches take time to build a winning program.

The Lightning did not immediately become contenders when they hired John Tortarella. It took a year. Didn’t happen with the Rays when the hired Maddon. It took a year. Heck, go back to the last time the Bucs became contenders. It took Dungy a year……..Sorry Magic fans I don’t got not reference cause I barely follow them.

Hey we all wanted a quick fix and they do happen all the time. But it shouldn’t be instant fix or bust. That’s just unreasonable. It wasn’t that way for Bellickick or Jimmy Johnson or Walsh or Pete Carroll or even the Big Tuna himself………..Overreaction gone mad…….Mad I tell you!!!

  76. JimmyJack Says:

Now watch the games enjoy our season and let’s look for real signs of progress. We just saw some yesterday and we saw a lot all year if you really pay attention……….Or just lash out Everytime we lose a hard fought game.

I’m not suggesting you take great joy in moral victory. But it’s pretty easy to see that kneejerk reaction and running off entire coaching staffs gets you no where……..well except where we been for the last few decades……….Cause you want a new coach and their plan will be to tally different and they might gotta throw away the good players we have so they can build it the way they need it. It’ll set us back and repeat the same pattern we been stuck in.

  77. Ndog Says:

So consider this, he could easily be the leader in ENTIRE LEAGUE in yards and be top 10 in TDs and we are going to let him walk. Ok that makes sense.

  78. Gambelero Says:

Let’s look at the other side of this. You bench Hargreaves, Perriman and anybody else who doesn’t want to play; the defense improves; and we win five games with Jameis playing really well.

Will he want to re-sign with these owners? Jameis comes from a middle class background and has an extensive network of support. They’re going to look at what happened to Luck, Rivers, Dalton, Tannehill and others who were trapped into playing most of their careers for miserly, obtuse owners.

And tell him to get the fridge out of Tampa.

  79. TexBuc Says:

If I was GM would offer Winston a 3 yr deal total of 60 million with 24 million guaranteed right NOW. Gives us time and ability to move on IF we find another QB and gives Winston some security now that he has a son.

  80. LEEC Says:

Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater are free agents next year.

  81. chris L Says:

joe you love to antagonize fans dont you? just because someone has an opinion we should move on from winston doesnt mean they hate him or cheer for him to fail and all they care about is him off of the team. maybe some people but that is insulting to actual fans of the team. nobody ever wants anyone to fail and i am on the fence either way with winston but lean towards starting over. either way though good or bad people have valid points on both sides and you cant argue that. to place everyone in this bucket that they hate the guy and want him to fail is so short sighted and insulting to fans and your readers. just because someone has a different opinion than you, you think we’d rather have dalton and actually want him to fail? NO friggin way. i want every damn player to win every damn game. nobody is clear of criticism. this is the problem in tampa. everyone thinks everyone is a jameis lover or hater. it is not black and white so stop with all of the chirping of fans. it isnt productive and only adds fuel to the fire of in-fighting for fans.

we all want a winner. we all have differing opinions how to do it but nobody ever cheers for anyone to fail. come on, you’re better than that.

  82. tmaxcon Says:

    JimmyJack

Wait for progress… lol dude if i ever get arrested i want you as my jury foreman…. this franchise has not made a good decision since dungy the clown was canned and have not won a meaningful win since fluke championship…. you keep looking for progress pal… this is pro sports not tee ball. Results matter progress is for losers

  83. tmaxcon Says:

    destinjohnny

I believe you meant to say 3 or 4 decades not drafts

  84. BrianBucs Says:

There are probably at least 4 or 5 QB’s in this next draft that will have very successful NFL careers. Would hate to pass on them all while waiting for a 5th year veteren to “develope”.
There are QB’s in this next draft that will play better next year as rookies that Winston will in his 6th year.

  85. Buc1987 Says:

    Fix the secondary.

    Then worry about Jameis.

  86. TexBuc Says:

    BrianBuc

1st round draft QB success rate is only 36.8% going back 17 years. So historically 4-5 QB’s succeeding are against the odds. Not that in anyway am I an expert, but the only QB I like is Joe Burrow. Tua scares me with so many lower body injuries.

  87. TexBuc Says:

    Buc1987

That is what i have been saying! Agree 100% fix secondary and develop some OL depth.

  88. LongSeason Says:

Does the offensive line hate Jameis? They seem to. If they loved him they might try blocking. Instead they are just opening the flood gates and letting him get pummeled. I’m surprised Jameis is dead yet.

  89. JimmyJack Says:

1987…….We very well may have seen them take a big first step in fixing this secondary if Dean can build off of his performance yesterday.

Just developing one CB is a far cry from our last staff who developing none. Kudos to Joe for being the first one I know to point that out.

Hey and don’t look now but I sa Devin White very far down field defending a ball yesterday. Coverage from our LB was been overlooked as a glaring problem. Like Dean he just gotta keep building off good performances.

In the end the Hargreaves pick really set us back defensively. He was chosen to be a shutdown guy you build around and isn’t even serviceable.

  90. Anonymous Says:

Of course anything on this site by the the dirtbag Joe about Winston would start with something lewd…just like Winston. Birds of a feather.

  91. TexBuc Says:

Off topic I read that Vita Vea played RB in HS so we should try him as our short yardage RB. We can think of him as our 360lb Derrick Henry and VV does have a good short burst speed perfect for 3-1 or goal to go…just a thought.

  92. Jmarkbuc Says:

    TexBuc

Release him, trade down, fix OL and defense first. We can go 6-10 with a journeyman and a fourth round QB. Don’t need JW for that

  93. Dan Says:

Winton has 95 giveaways since 2015 and leads the NFL in interceptions this season. How anyone can even think giving him an extension is a option is beyond me and shows the absolutely low expectations people have for our Bucs. Would anyone want him? Of course not. Only your Bucs.

  94. Anonymous Says:

Now Jameis leads the NFL in INTs….all by himself…this year. Yayyyy. Oh, but those aren’t his fault. He’s got those terrible WRs. LOL. We can only imagine how bad Winston would be if he didnt have Evans, Godwin, and company. Here comes a real defense to town.

  95. TexBuc Says:

    Jimmy

Good points. I do believe we may see a whole better secondary from this group next year. We should draft at least one developmental DB and pass rusher every year to keep depth going.

  96. JimmyJack Says:

Long season…..If the OL bothers you then you might wanna brace yourself for Sunday.

Last time we played the Saints we bacisally were manhandled wire to wire.

  97. Jean Lafitte Says:

Or, because of all these offensive weapons we have, we could insert, I don’t know, say hypothetically Josh Freeman, and get the same production without all the turnovers.

It would be nice to have a QB who plays for your team only instead of being a double agent. Jameis regrettably has to outscore himself most every game.

  98. TexBuc Says:

    Dan

Winston has only ever played in the 4 vertical offense which is a long shot offense (think Air Coryell and dan fouts). Both Koetter and BA run this offense just different variations of it. This offense will QB completion rate will always be in the sixties. Yes Winston should not throw this many INT’s, but as long as BA says he is his guy and will make decision at the end of the season I will reserve final judgement until the season ends.

Having been a fan since the 80’s every time we run off a QB we still keep losing.

  99. TexBuc Says:

    Dan

Oh and Dan Fouts completion rate in this same offense is only 59.0

  100. DB55 Says:

These are the last couple of years of FA signings by the Bucs. Most are no longer in the league, only two (outside of most recent fa) that I can think of are making any kind of impact Jensen and Sweezy. So the question is who will Licht waste his QB money on next year?

Jpp – missed half a season
Suh – according to joe not his best statistical season
Barrett – playing very well likely leave at end of season
    Bucannon – cut
    Minter- benched

    Vinny Curry, DE.
    Ryan Jensen, OL.
    Chandler Catanzaro, K.
    Mitch Unrein, DT.
    Keith Tandy, S.
    Beau Allen, DT.
    Brent Grimes, CB.
    Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB.

    William Gholston
    Jacquizz Rodgers
    Chris Conte
    Chris Baker
    DeSean Jackson

    Doug Martin
    Robert Ayers
    JR Sweezy
    Darryl Smith
    Josh Robinson
    Brian Anger

    Andy Wilder
    Henry Melton
    Sterling Moore
    Bruce Carter

  101. JimmyJack Says:

Tex last week I heard quite a few people saying the Bucs shouldn’t draft a DB since they don’t know how to. But now if Dean’s gonna come on I think they will pipe down with that narritive. I also think SMB is developing OK. To be hoenst I have saw him do much. Really I just don’t notice him out there which can actually be a good thing for a corner. But I do remember him at the beginning of the year and he was noticably bad. I think it’s worth some time to see how far they can develope these rooks.

But I like the plan of drafting late round depth for that position cause it can also keep your special teams strong. Same with receiver.

  102. JimmyJack Says:

Jean be fair…….You aren’t just going to insert any ol body at QB and maintain a #4 offense. That’s just unrealistic.

  103. TexBuc Says:

    Jimmy

Again good points and Todd Bowles needs to be less predictable in his play calling.

  104. TexBuc Says:

I remember a few years ago the Bronco’s did not renew the contract of Wade Phillips after coordinating a top 5 defense because they thought it was the personnel not coaching. With basically the same personnel the Bronco’s defense is shell of its former self the next season.

We have a top 4 offense and a bottom ranked pass defense fix what is broken not what is working the offense. So be careful what you wish for

  105. Pewter power Says:

Let em down easy BA lot of people will freak out if you said you will resign him now. I think since licht is not that good of a gm he will take the weak out when in truth we should be franchising winston and drafting a quarterback who will either be the guy or a pawn for draft picks. Either way it’s a win, draft a qb and o lineman then sign veteran speed receiver and corner

  106. Troy Says:

This is all nonsense. We have a bad football team. Winston is part of the problem, not part of the solution. All this crap that he’s the next Steve Young or Doug Williams is comical. He couldn’t hold a clipboard for either of those guys.

  107. Jean Lafitte Says:

Just think how pleasant it would be to have a QB that’s not constantly chasing his own points that he gives away. You wanna keep giving it away like candy then keep staring down your receivers. Where we fans feel confident that we actually have a chance to win decisively. To not give Buc old timers cardiac arrest every weekend with 36 seconds left in the game. Or feeling deflated after the first pick six, or a fumble inside our own 15 yard line. He has the lowest completion percentage in the NFL. If he can’t hit the long ball in this offense he’s defeating the purpose. Instead our receivers are running wind sprints up and down the field while he overthrows them by 5 yards too many times.

  108. Perimeter Blocker Says:

I only want him gone if we know for sure we can get better. A team could do a lot worse. I hate when people just say get rid of somebody with no plan. I definitely don’t want to draft develope suck and repeat again like we have done with Testaverde… Dilfer… King…. Simms … Freemen… Winston??? Out of all of them Winston is probably the best. If we get rid of him let’s get a veteran so we know what we have. Similar to firing Gruden at 9-7. We still haven’t found anyone better! Bottom line have a plan. Which unfortunately this ownership and GM don’t ever seem to have…🙄

  109. ModHairKen Says:

Joe, my goodness! “[T]hinking of the woman they may tongue that afternoon”? What kind of talk is that on a PG site?

  110. BucsBandit Says:

The Jameis Winston Homers see a guy that’s equivalent to a golfer to makes 8 birdies a round and they’re impressed… especially since most of the other golfers competing are only making about 5 birdies per round…

The difference is, Jameis Winston has 3 double-bogeys a round while those other golfers may have 1 or 2 bogeys.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist nor math wizard to realize that 8 birdies + 3 double-bogeys is a lot WORSE than someone averaging 5 birdies and only 2 bogeys.

All the yards and TD passes for Winston are MEANINGLESS when you take into consideration his massive turnover numbers.

  111. Defense Rules Says:

Willy Shakespeare was right when he wrote his comedy ‘Much ado about nothing’. THIS IS ALL PURE SPECULATION … no one has a clue what’s gonna happen with Jameis, not even Jameis. And certainly not Bruce Arians. BA wants a Super Bowl, and he wants it within 2 years at the latest. Can Jameis deliver that? Playing like he did in the first half of the season? Uhh, NO. Playing like he did yesterday? I doubt it. Playing like he did against the Rams? MAYBE. Problem is THAT’S not the Jameis we get CONSISTENTLY.

What’s comedic is to tout Jameis’ great 4th quarter heroics in bringing the team back, then trash the defense if can’t hold the lead WITHOUT even noting that we wouldn’t have to come back if it wasn’t for Jameis’ faux pas earlier in the game. The Bucs should’ve walked all over the Cardinals. We didn’t because the Bucs’ offense committed THREE TURNOVERS once again to allow the Cards to stay in the game. Time and time again turnovers by the Bucs’ offense have put this young defense into bad field positions … oftentimes in short field situations where surrendering points was a given. Super Bowl offenses don’t do that to their defenses, for good reason. They’d never reach the Super Bowl if they did.

And what’s even more comedic is when Jameis’ die-hard supporters say ‘None of those turnovers were Jameis’ fault’. 21 turnovers by this Bucs’ offense through 9 games. Bucs are now in 2nd place in the NFL in terms of most Giveaways. The teams in the Top-7 in that category (Giants, Bucs, Dolphins, Bengals, Browns, Jets, Falcons) have a COMBINED 14-50 record through yesterday … an average of 2 wins & 7 losses. And guess which QB leads the NFL in INTs? Yup, Jameis Winston with 14. But look on the positive side, none of them were his fault.

  112. Jean Lafitte Says:

He|| … I’d even take Cam Newton at this point

  113. Jim Says:

    What Chris said…

  114. tmaxcon Says:

you fools are hilarious talking like this franchise matters and has hope… so cute yet so way out of reality…. glazers are not trying and thanks to low standard bucfan they don’t have to.

  115. tmaxcon Says:

new jersey is the armpit of America and Tampa is armpit of the nfl… actual results prove this… new jersey was built on a landfill similar to the bucs MRSA training room / facilities.

  116. stpetebucsfan Says:

DB55 Are you questioning JW’s manhood? He takes a hit and then immediately tosses an int? Really? I didn’t see that the hit was around JW’s head or I’d think perhaps he had his bell rung(a nice term for concussed) and that caused the int?

NDOG Wow I’m impressed! I’d be even more impressed if he could lead us to a winning season. Yeah I know the losses are not ALL his fault but he’s the freaking QB. Yards do not matter.

BA says…”If he plays like he has the last two weeks for the rest of the season, I’d say there’s a really good chance.”

That is reasonable and restores my faith in BA. My major concern though is JW’s consistency. I can easily see him winning 10-11 games next year the way our D is starting to mature in the back end…by next year they will be far better than this year. Dean, Davis, and SMB are all keepers and we have a couple of solid safeties as well.

Here’s what I have trouble envisioning…JW SUSTAINING enough consistency to win 3-4 consecutive games against playoff teams. Odds are he turns in a stinker somewhere along the line which is why I agree with IRA’s take that JW cannot get us to the SB.

  117. passthebuc Says:

why would you pay the worst starting QB in the league market money? I guess i can be satisfied with watching college football.

  118. Bird Says:

    Lets get something clear

Joe will be tongueing the crotch area of his jameis winston full size fat head on his bedroom wall.
He does that every morning before a cup of coffee
And every night before he gets into his jameis winston jam jams
Sometimes its a day of just standard mouth kissing

You know what…lets sign him to a 5 year extension . Im down
He has almost 100 turnovers in 4.5 years . 110 for 5 full seasons sounds about right ?
He could set the bar at over 225 turnovers with another big contract 5 year contract.

  119. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It is okay to want him gone.

It is okay to want him to stay.

We’re all entitled to our opinions, but we are in this foxhole together.

Personally, I want him to consistently play better, because then we all benefit. Otherwise, we are looking at another 5 year plan.

  120. tmaxcon Says:

    Bird

since you brought up crotch sniffing, just curious how long each morning you sniff and lick the crotch of you dungy the clown blow up doll fleshlight edition

  121. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You can always spot the trolls though. Most of the time, Joe posts negative stuff. On these rare occasions when he shows a little positivity, the trolls insult him for it. Harshly.

Personally, I would IP Ban the trolls…since they chase more away than they bring in.

  122. DB55 Says:

3 points off of turnovers. 27 points scored. 3 TDs by a rookie wr

Sorry man but the def is trash.

  123. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bird Says
“You know what…lets sign him to a 5 year extension . Im down”

You joke, but it isn’t a bad idea. Just put win incentives each year to make each year guaranteed. Then, if we don’t win a bunch of games, he can be released without penalty.

In the meanwhile, start developing plan B.

  124. Discobeef Says:

The only reason Jameis has good yardage stats is because he is throwing to the best receiving corps in the league. We all know why OJ Howard wasn’t traded to the Patriots, the Bucs brass didn’t want to watch him put up 100-150 yards a game week in week out that his current QB can’t get for him

  125. DB55 Says:

I’d opine for a more consistent offensive line that doesn’t get your qb sacked on the second play of the game and countless tfls for your rbs but wtfdik

  126. DB55 Says:

The best we Corp. they said Humphries was great but look at him now.

  127. tmaxcon Says:

    Discobeef

no the reason he has top ten receivers is he has always had the worst defensive units in league history and must throw 50 times a week score 50 each week to overcompensate for this incompetent minor league franchise.

Jameis is the only quarterback in NFL history who has faced TWO defenses every game of his career…. it’s nearly impossible to over come the opponents defense and your own defense every week. not to mention jameis has to overcome the worst owners in pro sports and a minor league franchise trying to compete in the nfl…. jameis is a victim

  128. Ken G Says:

TexBuc: I’ve suffered through all 44 seasons of this franchise. Just because they have some yardage doesn’t change that Winston was 3-6 last year. 3-6 this year. It is losing football. This offense has been built to make Winston succeed — they’ve literally done everything for the guy (throwing money at the offensive line; throwing picks at the skill positions; bringing in the QB whisperer). It is just simple cost-benefit: he costs too much and benefits the team too little.

  129. BucsBandit Says:

    Bird,

Exactly. It’s a JOKE that Joe defends Winston like he does. I can only guess he’s an FSU Alumni or something.

No player in the history of the Bucs has had more “second chances” and more excuses made for him. No matter how bad he plays or how inconsistent he continues to prove to be, apparently he’ll always get a pass that it’s okay rather demanding a change and what’s best for the team.

Next training camp we’ll hear how Jameis is working with a sports psychologist that will greatly improve his bad decision-making…

…or we’ll hear how Jameis has been training with new game simulator AR googles that will have him reading defenses much faster and that he will no longer hold the ball as much…

…or we’ll hear how Nike made a new pair of cleats for Jameis that weigh 10lbs heavier than normal shoes so Jameis will not bounce on the balls of his ‘happy feet’ so much and he’ll be more poised & grounded which will lead to more accurate throws and better reads.

…or we’ll hear how Jameis starting training with AI Drones that he has learned to hit with passes based on different trajectories and how that will greatly improve his massive deep ball inaccuracy problems.

I FEAR that we’re going to continue to hear these ‘new’ excuses every year… every training camp… going into every season… for the next FIVE YEARS as they continue to give this guy a chance.

Anyone that saw FITZPATRICK play with our weapons last year, and put up some huge numbers, knows that any decent QB can be productive with all the weapons we have on Offense. YET… somehow the Jameis-Homers think his big yardage and TD numbers are some unique to Jameis that no one else playing with our weapons could also achieve, or even… *gasp* surpass and play even better than Jameis.

  130. Hank Rearden Says:

    BootyBandit

Keep writing your long winded rants. It will have ZERO effect on wether Jaboo stays or goes. Either way, you’ll still be that guy at the party that everyone avoids.
    And as always…GO BUCS!

  131. JimmyJack Says:

BucsBandit……Not sure who you are talking about but maybe those who you are calling Jamies Homers are simply just fans of the team who root for Winston because he is a Buc.

Hey we all different which is a good thing but just know that many of us will remain loyal to this team win lose or draw reguardless of which players we like or dislike.

As far the question whether or not Winston should be our QB in the future. I don’t care if you are more right or I am more right or if Ndog is the most right………I only care if Bruce is right because it’ll be his decision. I think he knows a thing or two about QBs and I trust he’ll make the right decision. But no matter what the decision is my loyalty will not waiver. Shame not all could say the same. Shame

  133. Tackleblockwin Says:

If the Bucs move on from Jameis, I’d bet they sign another free agent QB. The only way I see us drafting a QB is if they blow up the entire team.

  134. Eric Says:

Zero chance Bruce does anything else but sign Jameis. Last thing he wants to do is break in another QB next year.

And in contrast to the local goobers he sees the talent Jameis has.

Choke on it haters, Jameis is here to stay.

  135. Jean Lafitte Says:

They could draft a QB, second round i.e. Jimmy G and sign a veteran like Smith, Newton, Manning, Hoyer etc… with these weapons c’mon . could even resurrect Brad Johnson and he’d put up career numbers lol

  136. Jean Lafitte Says:

where’s Garcia when you need him lol ..bet he can still sling it

  137. Deez days Says:

Resigning Winston is the dumbest idea ever…. y’all gonna wish he had not when he does because it will be more years losing … he turns the ball over every freaking game … be careful what y’all wish for … I for one will laugh my arse off when all y’all are crying about the Bucs resigning him … guess what y’all like the losing … f that

  138. Deez days Says:

Draft a quarterback and sign a free agent QB … be smart Bucs move on from the turnover machine

  139. Jean Lafitte Says:

Boy, John Lynch has put together a great team in a short period of time.

    Oh what we could’ve had.

  140. SteveK Says:

Too many turnovers for a defense to have to overcome. Especially our defense. Draft a rookie. Sign a veteran. Pay less cap space for more.

  141. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree about the refs but they’ve been screwing us since….. forever. The problem is that this is a mentally weak, garbage team that can’t do enough to overcome a bad call or two. When the refs do make a bad call, which is often, the Bucs hang heir heads, whine and completely fall apart. The only way Jameis wins a Championship is if he becomes a backup for the Patriots or signs with the Yankees as a reliever. The ceiling for a Jameis was his rookie season and it’s been downhill ever since. The only player to milk more money from the Glazer kids is GMC. There is plenty of blame to go around, from top to bottom.

  142. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with you about John Lynch. He’s killin it

  143. Lamarcus Says:

Why this is even being questioned at the Qb position is a reason why we are bottom feeders. You know everyone looking at JW still bashing him after a win just tells me get him off the team and just prove every was right so they could feel better about themselves. And then Licht or Arians or next guy needs to find a QB quickly.

I’m for either way since it’s clear about the turnovers he is my favorite player and of course I want him to stay because it’s best for the team. But fans don’t like him and this fanbase is not really a fanbase anymore because of him. JW consumes ppl lives and total obsessed with him he has taking ppl away from their families. Ppl LOVE to hate him. Ppl thinks of JW more than their own kids.

Get him off the team for the fan sake

  144. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … I’m like you I guess; just want Jameis to play CONSISTENT, quality football. We all know that he’s capable of it, but there’s just way too much up-and-down that Jameis brings to the table.

BUT … folks are only looking at 2 scenarios it seems: (1) re-sign Jameis so we don’t ‘lose’ our 5-year investment; or (2) let Jameis walk & draft a rookie QB who can start in 2020. I think the odds are looking good that NEITHER of those will happen.

IF Jameis plays well the rest of the way this season & the Bucs do well, Jameis will want to be paid & would most likely test the FA waters. Tampa Bay is unlikely to sign him to a long contract & won’t pay him $30 mil plus like his agent, Joel Segal, will surely be seeking. Of course, if Jameis plays poorly or is inconsistent the rest of this season, chances are the Bucs wouldn’t re-sign him anyways.

And unless this season totally collapses, which it won’t, we’ll probably be drafting in the #10 – #15 spots. We MIGHT find a starting QB in that range, but probably not.

That leaves us with what’s behind Door 3 … sign an established QB. Someone like Teddy Bridgewater or Ryan Tannehill perhaps? Or trade for someone else’s backup QB. Or maybe some team wants to move on from their starter & draft a promising rookie QB. LOTS of potential scenarios that could play out in many different ways. Pure speculation at this point.

If I had my druthers, I’d go the Brad Johnson route. Build a very strong defense and an offense that’s ‘credible’. Focus on building a strong Line, a strong running game & a reasonably effective short to intermediate passing game. An offense that minimizes turnovers, controls the clock, and really enjoys playing smashmouth football. A QB like Teddy Bridgewater would do fine running an offense like that. The strong defense is the key though … Top-5. By adding a few key pieces, we could have that defense next year & the year after.

  145. Ndog Says:

Why is it the same posters post the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over again? I guess the question is will these people please leave if Jameis is resigned? That way we can all route for our team instead of just blaming one person for every loss, TO, penalty, weather pattern, field condition, etc…

What people don’t seem to get is football is a team game. Wins and losses are on the team. TOs are on the team. Culture is on the team. No success or failure is on any one person. Yesterday was a perfect example of the different players picking each other up. That THAT is what a TEAM is.

  146. Oneilbucs Says:

John Lynch is killing it because he’s not just a we need a quarterback type of guy he knows that defense wins championships you guys just don’t understand that but I do . That’s why I say forget going after a quarterback we might have the chance to draft the kid out of Ohio state the defensive end that’s the way to go not quarterback!!!

  149. SteveK Says:

    Ndog,

Sorry for the same schtick. We continue to lose with a bad defense and a QB that turns it over more than anyone. I believe a sure fire way to improve the team would be to turn the ball over less. I am scared Jameis has another 3+ Turnover game this year and at that point I am firmly done and ready to move on to a new QB.

  156. lambchop Says:

    Ndog,

When YOUR QB is consistently inconsistent, what else have we got to say?

Jameis plays inconsistent over and over and over and over exactly like your nut hugging.

If Fitzpatrick could set records to start last year in this offense AND have a Jameis like crap fest, why pay 25M+ for the same production? They are both statistically similar in their career, yet one is highway robbery while the other is get what you pay for.

We don’t have the luxury to play this QB experiment any more when that money would be better suited to players who produce game in and game out.

Jameis is overrated and is the biggest con artist to hoodwink simpletons like you.

From a pure business standpoint, Jameis has not played at the very least like Deshaun Watson; I won’t dare compare him to Russell Wilson. So, for those who are scared that a rook might struggle, I would rather pay a rook for almost the same or slightly worse production with the hopes that he turns out to be more like Watson or Lamar Jackson rather than Mariota or Winston.

It’s about the Benjamins. No personal animosity to Jameis. He just hasn’t lived up to the billing. Even with a great defense, Jameis can and has lost games with turnovers. That was the difference between Brad Johnson and Jameis. I never had to sit on the edge of my seat with Brad until after the SB when age, play calling, Gruden tweaking personnel caught up. All you need is a Brad or Trent (he finally realized he sucked and had to understand that he just had to move the chains and get the ball in the play makers hands). Who cares about yards and TDs?

You win with Defense and an average QB. We can’t have a great defense with sunk money in Jameis. If he was a baller, I’d say pay him, but he’s not. But we got bonafide stars on D that need that money and give a better ROI than Jameis.

You Jameis homers worry about “starting over”, what about starting over with a DL that might lose 2 of its biggest studs cuz there’s no money on the table to keep them? You think secondary is the only problem? Wait till JPP and Shaq move on cuz someone locked up dumb money in dumb players.

  157. lambchop Says:

During the game the announcers were talking about how someone asked Leftwich who Jameis reminds him of, and like a sadist Leftwich said, “Me.” That’s all she wrote folks. That is all you need to know.

  158. lambchop Says:

    Ndog,

Turnovers kill drives, gives good field position to the opposition, and possibly leads to direct points (returned for TD) for the other team. It swings momentum and puts the defense on the field without proper rest and puts them in a tough spot defending a short field. Jameis has done that so many times, but we want to blame the defense for Jameis’s lack of accountability? If the defense gives up points off a Jameis TO, that’s on Jameis.

Turnovers are the single most significant stat that affects a win or loss more than anything. It’s possible points off the table with possible points for the other team.

Yards? He throws for 300+ yards? So, like when Godwin caught that pass Sunday and took it 49 yards down field, you’re telling me that’s glory to Jameis Winston? That shows your football IQ.

TDs? You mean like when OJ read the defender and took a bee line to the corner pile on? Jameis better hit that cuz Juice was wide open. How about when Godwin tippy toes two feet in the endzone? Or Mike climbing a ladder grabbing a fade? I mean, let’s give Jameis all the credit for TDs.

SMH. Keep searching for excuses and bring out the old cop out excuse that it’s a team game but talk about Jameis’s yards and TDs. Why don’t you give the complete picture and talk about comp %, INTs, TD to Int Ratio, fumbles, and turnovers since 2015?

    I call BS on you.

  159. BucsBandit Says:

Jimmy Jack – wanting the Bucs to become winners again and not thinking Winston should be the QB are not mutually exclusive. The “Jameis-Homers” are the ones that think he should be our QB no matter how poorly he plays.

NDog – lets go over this one more fackin time for your simple little brain to understand…

No one is saying all of our losses are all solely Jameis’ fault. NO ONE. Knowledgeable fans recognize how bad our secondary and other parts of our team are. Those contribute to losses as well. So now that that’s out of the way…

The QB position CAN BE independently evaluated just like any other position on the team. If we had any QB putting up the massive turnovers that Winston has, along with the rest of his inconsistent play, accuracy issues, and bad decision-making, many people would be passionate in saying THAT QB needs to be replaced as well.

So with that being said, Jameis Winston is not the sole reason we lose a lot, but sure does contribute heavily to it with his poor play. And for that reason, it’s time for him to go since be hasn’t proven to be consistent and reduce the turnover liability now through almost 5 years of his NFL career. And especially due to his high salary cap implications which magnifies the cost at keeping an inconsistent, under-performing QB.

Any questions? This isn’t rocket science.

  160. Ndog Says:

Yes one question can you get any more CLUELESS Bandit?

But seriously how can you not see that anytime the defense plays even decently we win? You guys are so blinded by your dislike that you can’t see the forest for the trees. If our defense was just slightly below average we would be 7-2 this year then you wouldn’t be saying anything about the QB, and that is with nothing changing on offense at all including everything that has gone wrong around the QB. This is do simple, when you are looking to get better you fix your weakest parts not destroy your strength. I mean listen to yourselves you literally want to take the only thing we do well and change it. Are we good at running the ball, nope. Are we good at rushing the passer, nope. Are we good at covering the others team receivers, nope. What you guys want to do is the equivalent to saying let’s focus on our run stuffing ability in the draft next year, when that is the only part of the defense that’s worth a crap. I mean this is so clear and obvious yet you people are just to stupid to see it. This entire discussion just blows my mind with how unbelievably dumb you people sound. It’s unreal, it really is, I mean are we even watching the same games? My goodness you people are frustrating I just wish for one game I could sit with each of you and show you what is really happening and there is no way you would come out of a game after play for play thinking anything other than just like me.

  161. BucsBandit Says:

    Ndog,

Sorry, but you’re just out of touch with reality. Winston’s turnovers have been a major liability for the team. FIELD POSITION is one of the most important factors that can predict the winner of a game, and Winston often gives opposing teams short fields with his turnovers. Do you dispute that fact?

Stop blaming Winston’s poor play on the Defense. How often does Winston march the team down field in our first 3 possessions to put up TDs and build early leads on other teams — and doing so without coughing up the ball early and making it easy for an opponent to score on a short field (like he did against the Cardinals and has done in many other games.)

You also act like Jameis Winston is the only QB in the NFL (or coming into the NFL) that can have similar production than he has had with our offensive weapons. Why was Ryan Fitzpatrick at times last season capable of putting up even BIGGER performances than some that Winston had put up with the same offense?

Our Offense receiving corp is STACKED. Our O-Line is decent at pass protection; last season they ranked in the middle of the league. Our running game is slowly starting to improve.

Jameis Winston is hardly our “strength” on the team. The fact that he can put up so many terrible turnovers and still have our offense scoring points is a testament to how good the rest of the offense is, not just Jameis himself. It’s freakin hilarious how you seem to assign all the credit to any of our offensive production to Jameis and not the amazingly talented playmakers we have, like most-likely future Hall Of Famer, Mike Evans, the same WR just a few weeks ago you were crying about and claiming was “overrated” LOL.

Again, you vastly overrate Winston’s contributions to this team. He’s not as great as you think he is, not by a long shot. Not when you truly balance his liability of turnovers and accuracy issues and often bad decision making.

If I am so clueless (and not you) then why haven’t the Bucs already signed Winston to an extension to make sure this amazing NFL QB (or in your opinion) is kept by the team for the long term? They certainly wouldn’t wait until the end of the season when it becomes harder to get him to sign an extension.

SOOOO… who do you think knows better about Winston, with all bias put aside… me, the Bucs organization (that hasn’t yet offered him an extension), the majority of NFL analysts and experts… or YOU, DB55, one of the Joe’s, and many of the FSU fans that love Winston too?

I’ll err on the side of the NFL experts in this debate where you’re calling me (and them) “clueless.”

So you would rather weaken a top 5 scoring offense than improve the 31st ranked defense? That is what you are saying, listen to yourselves!!!!!

  166. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey BrianBucs, “Would a highly drafted QB raise enough excitement in the fan base to fill those thousands of empty seats ar Ray Jay?”

Did you watch the last game back in RayJay with Winston as the starting QB? And how many seats did his being the starting QB fill all those empty seats? I was sad to see that empty half of the stadium. So for as you state would a highly drafted QB be exciting enough to put folks in the seats. We see what year five of a highly rated first round draft choice, pust into the seats.

Is it all his fault, no not all. But as the face of the franchise this also goes with that label. You are expected to be who your fans come to see play, and Win, not so much when you play and lose, and lose and lose. Nothing like spending your hard earned cash on a few tickets for your family to go to the game to see the franchise throw another pick, maybe if your lucky he will throw a pick on the first play of the game. Yeah that is not how to build a fan base. We hear how bad our defense is, again and again. Yet do we ever hear how many times the defense has made a three and out to only have our QB have another turnover. Sending them back out again to defend the rest of the field after the turnover. No, we rarely hear any of that. We only hear how great Winston is becoming this season after season after season. As a fan I am tired of it. So YES! Bring in a highly rated first round QB. Fill those seats as the new QB has his growing pains. And from Joe’s perspective we still are watching the maturation of a fifth season Starting QB. Who probably will have a double Ben on both TD’s and INT’s by seasons end.

Sure we keep Winston and he unfortunately has another “hassel” and you know what we are left with? Without a QB. So in my opinion time to cut bait and move forward. Thanks for the memories but looking forward to better play from the QB position. Without all the hassles this QB has brought upon himself. Good luck the rest of the season Winston. Here’s to a few more close games we just can’t overcome your lack of ball security. Yes he has been better but his MO is what it is.

I totally understand the phrase now, “Wait for it” been waiting for four and a half years and we see glimpses of a star, and also piles of a shat. Time to let it go and move on.

  167. Oneilbucs Says:

Man if we don’t focus on our defense it’s not going to matter who the quarterback is. Jamies scores a lot of points we just can’t stop anybody that’s the problem. I find it amazing that we have a bottom ranked running game and this guy still puts up a lot of points. If we draft another quarterback he is not going to put the points that Jamies is putting up and that’s a fact . Build the defense and give the team a chance to win. Scoring points is not the problem with this team. Jamies is not the problem with this team defense and offensive line is the reason why we are losing!!!! Look at last night with Jimmy G give Jamies a defense like that and he will easily win a championship. Jimmy G is not good at all Jamies would have won we scored 34 points against the Seahawks and still lost . You people hate Jamies so much that yall are blind . I hope we bring back Jamies and you guys go root for another team!!!

  168. Oneilbucs Says:

You guys are the biggest sheeps I’ve ever seen. Your hate for Jamies is just what it is and some of you people really just want a white quarterback in the game and you’re to afraid to say it . And go ahead and say race card but how you explain a top 5 scoring offense??? Lol lol lol and a 31 ranked defense but the quarterback is the problem lol lol you guys are just plain stupid!!!

  170. ancientasbuc Says:

People are forgetting the negotiation part of the process. Jameis has played his way to at least a 3 year extension. What that costs and if he will sign is all that is left to decide. Grow up so-called experts. This is a business and he gives his team a better chance to win than most even with his mistakes. The Never-Jameis crowd can only point to empty turnover stats instead of asking how many games has he lost with his play. 2 this year and one last year, 2 the year before and 2 his first year. Watch the games, be honest and say it is the QB position. if you do, you’re lying to yourself because he was an unsavory character at FSU.

  171. LongSeason Says:

This team can score move the ball and score points. Imagine if they could pass block. Maybe we might win some of these shoot outs. As for the Saints Sunday? Yeah they are going to steamroll our offensive line.

  177. Dapostman Says:

    @Longseason ,

How does a red zone turnover hurt the defense points allowed? Not all turnovers are equal. How does a 4th down turnover hurt? How does a turnover with 24 seconds left hurt? How bout when the few times the defense gets a turnover right back? How does that hurt their points against? Anyone who can’t see that no matter what the offense was doing this defense has been a sieve since 2011 is not paying attention. That’s four years before Winston.

You know what hurts? 22 TD passes allowed in 9 games and not keeping teams out of the endzone. Bad defense has been a staple for a decade now.

  178. BucsBandit Says:

LongSeason OWNING these fools with FACTS and statistics. Love it!

Dapostman, our receiving corp IS stacked with 2 of the top WRs in the NFL. Many analysts believe we have the best 1-2 lineup in the league. Both of those guys can dominate DBs and often do.

Oneilbucs, no one else can put up big numbers with this offense than Jameis? HAhAHAHA. This has already been proven FALSE. Ryan Fitzpatrick did multiple times. He even put up some games that were more impressive than many that Jameis has had. Another QB could certainly come in and lead this offense to many points. Don’t kid yourself thinking this is exclusive to Jameis.

  179. Dapostman Says:

Bandit proving how truly clueless he is. Fitz put up numbers the first 3 games with a new play caller Monken. Once film got out Fitz fizzled like the fruity alcohol concoction that Bandit sips while bubble bathing with his flesh light.

  180. LongSeason Says:

    Dapostman

Our team turns the ball over too much in our end of the field. That gives teams easy 3-7 points. If we turn the ball over in the red zone we lose points. Unless we stop beating ourselves we will never have a winning season again. To be fair to Jameis, our O-line pass blocking is amateurish at best. Yet we still see Jameis throwing interceptions when he is not under pressure.

You can drink the Jameis cool-aid if you want. Spectacular one play, average the next and then horrible the play after that. Jameis needs to learn to play smart. Lord knows his football knowledge is off the charts but his decision making is on the level of Loki, except Jameis isn’t evil.

If it wasn’t for Evans (beast playing among boys) and Godwin (a great possession receiver) Jameis would be in trouble. At least we got shed of Bobo and now Hargreaves.

Coaches need to coach better and know situation in game. Arians tossing challenge flag when we are out is inexcusable. Hand that danged thing of to someone or have a safe to put it in when you are out of challenges.
