Bruce Arians Skewers Vernon Hargreaves On National Radio

November 13th, 2019

Bucco Bruce Arians fired a couple of public shots at departed Bucs cornerback Vernon Hargreaves this evening.

“I really don’t want to get into it,”Arians told local media this afternoon, when he was very curt on the subject of Hargreaves. But the head coach opened up on the subject on national radio a few hours later.

“It’s been a thing in progress,” Arians said of dumping Hargreaves, via SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Love Vernon, he’s a great kid. There’s just too many times on film his effort wasn’t good enough.”

Ouch!

Nothing worse in the NFL than getting called out for being a loafer.

Arians added that first-round picks often get a longer rope than other players, but it seems Hargreaves ran out of twine.

“You hold out hope for a long time,” Arians said. “But a player controls two things: he controls his effort and his attitude. And if those things don’t match up to what you want as as team, then it’s time to move on.”

And in typical Bucs tradition, Hargreaves landed with the Texans, a playoff team.

Joe’s is sticking on Arians saying cutting Hargreaves has “been a thing in progress.” Bucs are one interesting team.

Something doesn’t add up…this is the same guys who’s “effort” helped us win in week 2. There is more here than they are letting on.

I’m not surprised. I think they knew from day 1 he was not going to be on the roster next year. He was always going to just be a place holder this year until the kids were ready, but it stretched out longer than expected due to Jamel dean being hurt earlier in the year hindering his progress, Ryan Smith suspended, and then Davis being hurt the last couple of weeks. Everyone is finally healthy so he was expendable. If he was playing lights out and we were in playoff position they probably would have kept him or hoped to trade him if he was playing well but we were out of playoff position, but he did nothing to help his stock.

  3. Pick6 Says:

He’s not big enough or fast enough to be anything but an all out effort player. As the oldest guy in the CB room and a top 10 pick it just adds to the expectation. He was an ideal guy to make an example of. I wish him well but he had to be great to stick around at $9 million next year and steal reps from the more recent day 1 and day 2 picks

  4. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

We saved 9 million dollars by cutting him, because his deal was only guaranteed for injury.
He never really lived up to his status as the number 11 pick in the Draft.
IMHO, he was a reach, like Mark Barron was. I had him on my draft board as a 3rd round pick.

  5. Buddy Says:

Didn’t Grandpa Bucco Bruce proclaim the secondary was fixed?? He’s a joke. He’s so full of himself and he’s never won squat. Brucie Bruce fans don’t come to the stadium and see you pal. Your fat face isn’t plastered on the stadium. They players are. Get over yourself and just go away and by the way quit lying

  6. Jmon300@gmail.com Says:

Gonna torch his ass in a few weeks lmao

  7. snookman Says:

Buddy Says: ” He never won squat”

    As head coach
2× AP NFL Coach of the Year (2012, 2014)
    As assistant coach
2× Super Bowl champion (XL, XLIII)

He has won a lot more than most bucs coaches.
He has a proven track record.
    He deserves 3-5 years
This is not an over night fix.

    Example: 2018 Raiders 2019 Raiders. 2018 49ers 2019 49ers
Both those teams hired new coaches and stuck with them even though they started poorly.

Give Arians a chance he will turn it around. this season is a loss but if they finish with 5 wins down the stretch I would be happy.

  8. Dapostman Says:

Short, slow and lazy is no way for a CB to go through his NFL life.

    Props to Dean Wormer

  9. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Vernon can’t take coaching because he’s too sensitive and thinks he is better than he is. You don’t need guys like that in your locker room. You don’t need cry babies complaining all the time and bringing the young DB room down.
This is like letting Gerald go, you got to cut the soft fat out.

Next year we go after a vet CB and draft Pass rushers.

Why is Eric Berry not on this team? Is Andrew Adams really better?
This FO needs to do their jobs and get the best talent on the field. We could use some veteran leadership in the defensive backfield.

  10. tnew Says:

Everyone needs a wake up call from time to time in life. Maybe this will be VHIII’s turn. Maybe he can learn from a true professional what it takes rather than the bridge guy who mentored him before. Brent Grimes showed him how to catch a check. No matter. Turn the page, time for the new guys to step up.

  11. Deez days Says:

Lol watch his effort on a playoff team …. when a team has a losing culture it runs off on the players … he will pick jameis off December 21st

  12. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @Alaskan

Why is Berry still a free agent? Maybe his recovery is more important than football… Hes probably done too… Just like Joe’s boy Johnnt Football

  13. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

It’s a shame that the guy gets canned after spending so much time perfecting his chase technique.

  14. BucsFan727 Says:

If Winston stays we need to get one of 3 players. Chase Young DE Ohio. Andrew Thomas LT Georgia…. JeffreyOkuda CB Ohio. Anyone of these players would be a MAJOR up grade.

Posters on this site have called him out many times for poor effort, especially when it involved tackling ball carriers. This is nothing new.

  16. D-Rome Says:

Why does Arians seem to “open up” with the national media instead of the local media? Never understood that.

  17. Runnerdoc Says:

The local media skewers the Bucs continuously. I wouldn’t feed them, either.

  18. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

The Bucs skewers the Buc fans.

  19. Hodad Says:

What if he picks Winston off a couple of times?

  20. Joe in Michigan Says:

Arians didn’t say anything that any fan who watches the games already knew. Hargreaves is as soft as Charmin. Addition by subtraction, we don’t want our young players to think it’s okay to not put forth effort.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Vernon Hargreaves was the product of a screwed-up NFL salary system IMO that makes it cost-prohibitive to get rid of 1st round picks until their 4th year UNLESS they’re just so dreadfully awful that you have no choice but to bite the bullet and cut them. The contracts for 1st rounders always call for a big signing bonus/ guaranteed money, and Dead Cap costs that make it extremely costly to cut them until year 4.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Hargreaves in 2016 to a fully guaranteed four-year, $14.17 million contract, that included a signing bonus of $8.51 million. The dead money from that original contract was $981,386 this year but with the Bucs exercising his 5th year option that might’ve changed. Prior to this year the dead Cap impact was in the mega-millions.

And as much as I chastise Gump, VHIII wasn’t as much of a stretch for a CB-needy team in 2016 as some have stated.

Hargreaves was regarded as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, and was ranked as the nation’s best cornerback recruit and the second best player overall coming out of high school. He was projected to be a first round pick by NFL draft experts and scouts. VHIII was ranked the top cornerback prospect in the draft by DraftScout.com and NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah, was ranked the second best cornerback in the draft by NFL analysts Mike Mayock, Lance Zierlein, and Bucky Brooks. And he ran a 4.50 sec 40-yard at the NFL Combine, not blazing fast but not pokey either. IOW Licht wasn’t the only one who thought he could be a viable pick at #11.

Vernon’s first year wasn’t great, but it was decent at least … started all 16 games with 76 tackles (68 solo), 9 PDs, 3 TFLs & 1 FF. Everything went downhill after that. Missed 21 games in the next 2 years due to injuries & when he did play he was ineffective. Whether his injuries hampered his speed or what after he got back I have no idea. Wasn’t hard to see that he wasn’t even close to being a shutdown corner. Sad that it took so long to move on from him.

I’m pretty sure that 1st round picks used to cost a lot more (relative to the salary cap, of course). The current structure actually protects teams by limiting rookie contracts.

  23. Todd Says:

Joe, even if you don’t post, you have to admit that was a funny smack down of a knuckle dragger!

  24. Buc believer Says:

I guess you can use Arians logic when talking about Licht…. he may screw up draft picks especially the high o es and also put the team in salary cap he’ll but hey at least he is trying and gives a darn!

  25. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Arians = classless. Real coaches don’t trash ex players. So now if VH3 trashes Arians, we can’t complain.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

One more example of a poor draft choice….there is no excuse for missing on an 11th pick…..
I think Licht has done well with Evans, Vea, Howard & White…..(Winston?)
    2nd round….horrible….

And other than the picks from the last two years I don’t believe we have any 5th-7th round picks on the team from any of his drafts……ZERO.

  27. Donnie wish we were better Buc fan Says:

Does that round out the entire 2016 draft class or is there anyone else left?
Why didn’t we trade him? 5th or 6th OR 7TH!?!? Nothing?

The glaring problem is this schmuck(JL) wasting away all our draft picks!

Entire scouting staff should be fired too!

GM’s time is up, he built this team!

Buccfan305 Says: Something doesn’t add up…this is the same guys who’s “effort” helped us win in week 2. There is more here than they are letting on.

Giving effort on a single play and giving consistent effort are two different things.

BucsFan727 – one of those 3 are exactly what we need in the first round. Okudah being the primary target. I think Chase will be gone when its our pick. For sure going top 3. Grab a right tackle in the second round.

  29. TBUC North Carolina Says:

    Buc Believer..
Hell, I’ve got a 6 month old that is trying to stand and walk!! Her effort is there!!! But she’s not QUALIFIED to walk or run yet!!! Licht is being paid millions of dollars that last several years and your applauding him for giving a damn!! His record, draft picks, draft maneuvers, free agent signings and handling of the salary cap is the worse I’ve ever seen in a GM!! Even worse than Trent Baalke! My 6 month old would be no worse than Meathead at his job!! Licht new nickname should be Jason Jesse James Licht…. cause he is stealing from this organization and fans!! And has been doing that theft continually for YEARS now!!

  30. 813bucboi Says:

joe sure does love talking about former bucs….(GMC, KWON now VHG)..lol…

i think VHG will wake up and do great things in houston….he’s in a better situation….playing on a better defense with a better QB….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  31. Maddog Says:

I think if you can hit on 50% of your draft picks you should be a contending team, then there is the buccaneers. IMO whatever the Buccaneers are doing hasn’t worked, they need to change their process or continue to get the same results.

    **************

Yeh I don’t think so. I believe he led the league in yardage given up. Over 1,000 if I recall. I can remember him trying to cover A Cooper. Yikes!

As to his career well 2 picks and 19 passes broken up. Terrible.

Hell Dean has 8 pass breakups and a pick in his first 2 games.

Hargreaves was a monumental BUST every year he played.

  33. Deborah Hall Says:

This is for TNEW, Brent Grimes has moved on and so should you. It really strange how you so called fans are, you believe whatever the coaches say, Vernon loved playing for the Buccaneers, but he now with a team that might go somewhere, be happy for him. Have a Blessed Day.

  34. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

    not very classy of Arians

  35. jmarkbuc Says:

    Oh 813…..

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

One never knows. One mans trash is anothers treasure. Hargreaves landed with a playoff contender. He will not only get paid but bonus money as well probably. I venture to say he not only plays better, but becomes a big time baller with the Texans. Sometimes in life, you have to move with the flow and keep an open mind. If you move forward, the worm will turn..for you. I had something happen like this to me in my career. A minus I initially thought, turned into a double plus.

    Thanks Licht. You asshat.

  38. Tuff75 Says:

Hargraves will be this year Bradley McDougal He will go to Houston and get better coaching and become a mainstay in Houston. This is what happens when players leave Tampa
