Suh Talks Bucs Leaders & Omits Jameis

October 30th, 2019

Only a losing organization like the Bucs would ask its starting quarterback to dial back his leadership instincts, ones they adored and treasured when they drafted him and through his first two seasons.

Keep quiet and play your position well, was the message to Jameis Winston when Bucco Bruce Arians arrived. Stop trying to be Superman on the field, and kill the Superman act when you step outside the white lines, Bucs officials echoed.

Who could forget general manager Jason Licht talking on SiriusXM radio this spring and saying he likes the new Jameis, the one who “hasn’t been trying to be the overall team, emotional leader.”

Joe was almost speechless hearing Licht’s remarks. If Bucs officials weren’t big fans of Jameis being the emotional leader of the team around the clock, then why was he the quarterback they drafted? That’s exactly who Jameis was coming out of college and that guy was embraced by Lovie Smith, and Dirk Koetter certainly didn’t try to coach that out of Jameis, per Joe’s knowledge.

Nahh, come in now and change Jameis’ DNA. That’ll work!

It hasn’t.

The Bucs offense is as sloppy as it’s been in years — Joe will have more on that later — and where is Jameis’ leadership?

Ndamukong Suh joined Buccaneers Radio on Monday and was asked about Lavonte David’s fiery postgame address to teammates in the locker room immediately following the Bucs’ loss to the Titans. He also was asked to name leaders on the roster that he noticed when he arrived in Tampa in mid-June.

Suh named David, Carl Nassib and Mike Evans. No Jameis.

“Definitely Lavonte had a huge emotional speech for us after the game, which really came from the heart from my opinion,” Suh said of David’s postgame rant. “And I think it’s important for guys to take that and internalize it and not just see it as something that was a negative aspect but take the good things out of it. Because I think when coaches are yelling at you, you always want to take the negative aspect of it versus finding the little nuggets when [they’re] speaking to you and how to understand and internalize those things and make them be positive.”

Joe’s glad David let it rip to teammates after the Titans game, but Joe suspects it won’t make any significant difference. And Joe is very hot about a new Arians comment that ties to all this, which will be addressed here later today.

Leadership is overrated in the NFL, Joe has often said. It matters, sure, but sometimes people act like leadership can overcome talent. One example is Rondé Barber was part of two Bucs teams that completely collapsed after excellent starts, the 2011 and 2012 clubs. And the latter team was plagued by one of the worst secondaries in NFL history.

What about 2008? The Bucs were 9-3 and loaded with leaders on the roster, yet a stunning collapse was forthcoming, culminating with a home loss to JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders that cost the Bucs a playoff berth and left them at 9-7.

@Joe … “Leadership is overrated in the NFL, Joe has often said. It matters, sure, but sometimes people act like leadership can overcome talent.”

Excellent point Joe, and very true IMO. BUT … the reverse is also true: You can have a very talented team, but without LEADERSHIP it can get mired in the muck & not go anywhere. They BOTH need to exist in a winning TEAM.

And oh ya, so does quality coaching. Talented players operating with strong field leadership who are being directed to do dumb things won’t lead you to the Promised Land. Leadership, talent, coaching … they ALL have to be part of the same winning package.

“Bucs would ask its starting quarterback to dial back his leadership instincts” when your starting QB’s leadership instincts lead your team to a career 23 wins and 38 losses. Yeah it ain’t the things that management loved about his game in college five, six, seven seasons ago. This is the NFL and that does stand for NOT For Long if you are not able to create Wins as a starting QB in year five of your career.
I don’t care about yards or TD records, or even INT records. I want to have a QB who leads his team good or bad to wins. So yes I can see how trying to change his rah rah rah, and then we just have to get better, I have to get better after game speaches.

  24. ClodHopper Says:

Maybe they realized they were wrong about his leadership skills after a few years. I’ve made that same transition. We are told how great his leadership was. He had notebooks filled with how to be a good leader. He trained for it his whole life. Few years later you can see he’s not a natural leader. It was a charade that was easy to pull off in college. Then he gets around full ass grown alphas and they didn’t buy his Saturday morning cartoon / Nickelodeon leadership style.

So he’s not natural but has trained his whole life for it and the truth comes out in the big leagues. Reminds me of Todd Marinovich in a way.

A Winston apologist said Carson Palmer sucked initially in Bruce Arians system for cardinals

What are you talking about ?
He was 10-6 in first season

In first 3 season (cause of injury )Carson Palmer was 29-9?

The is the first time , arians has lost 3 games in a row. That’s very telling. But yah , he should keep ripping everyone else but #3
The guy who has more turnovers then any other QB since 2015
And is leading the league with 18 already
But yah. Jameis is just unlucky. Everyone else to blame.

    What a clown show

  26. BA FAN Says:

I think what BA noticed in all the film he studied of the Bucs when he was hired, he saw Jameis pumping up the team to play and then with his Adrenalin flowing at the start of the game he was overthrowing his receivers and doing threes and outs. BA wanted him to come out calm and on target and go down and score a TD right away and get ahead and keep piling it on. When we played the Rams that was exactly how Jameis approached it and scored 54 points and whipped the Rams. So that strategy worked then. Jameis is extremely emotional and when he starts throwing interceptions he gets upset and often cannot put it behind him and that is what triggers his disastrous games. In the fourth quarter when the defenses drop into the Tampa two suddenly Jameis gets into rhythm and starts clicking and runs up the big yardage but rarely does he ever win in that situation. That is when the other team starts running to drain the clock and wears down our defense to the point the other team steamrolls our defense. Now if Jameis attacks the Seahawks and gets a lead and gets some protection from his OL and his running game is clicking, the Bucs can beat the Seahawks. We will have JPP and Barret putting real pressure on their QB too. But BA just needs to call the plays and whisper in Jameis’ helmet and keep him cool and focused. In short yardage get Vea at FB and Our Offense will roll, and suddenly Jameis will score in the red zone too.

Can you Joe’s add your names when you release an article. One of you have gotten really whiny, and if I could see your name, I could same myself time and just skip over your articles. Thanks

  28. SteveK Says:

If Licht has a burner that’s damning. Defending his draft pick explains motive and the interview kind of sounds like him. Just wow. How much time is wasted on a burner of true? Just when I think we can’t get any worse, something like this comes out. I hope Joe writes about it. So damn intriguing.

  29. Pewter power Says:

Damn you guys are pathetic, Joe’s for the type of articles they write and tout idiots treating em like a prophet. Damn dumb fans looking for anything to go after anyone associated with that logo because BA couldn’t charge a decade of losing in half a season. Honestly dont Getty why you calls yourselves fans, grumpy old men maybe but you’re definitely fans eating the pathetic negativity oozing from this site and they swear they aren’t writing negative articles lol

  30. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

SteveK, that is a pretty good way to get fired in addition to being a crappy GM, Im glad jamesis10f1 never blocked me, havent checked yet if he is still active guessing its closed down…..time to start over….and licht is doing a disservice to the franchise fans and town by not building a winning team. You have had 5-6 trade able assets the past 2 years and you sit on them and then get nothing its malpractice to the organization and fans

  34. doolnutts Says:

After watching Winston eat “W’s” I had zero problems with him being less vocal. That video is still incredibly hard to watch. Very cringe-worthy, leadership doesn’t mean be the loudest idiot in the room. It is also hard to lead when you make as many mistakes as Winston does. At FSU they played lesser teams so mistakes weren’t as magnified as they are in the NFL. Even one pick or fumble can cost you a game in the pros and that is the difference.

  35. Rayjay1122 Says:

Pewter power and idiotic losers like him or her who accept and defend losing is what is wrong with the team. Your dumb support of the crap that the Glazers are selling us is a shame. May God have mercy on your soul loser.

Change his DNA? From what someone who steals, Lies, and cheats? That would be a good thing. Change his maturity from eating W’s and dancing around like an A$$ clown? Probably a good idea! Trying to stabilize his erratic mental state because he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off at the beginning of games? That would be nice! Work on his long throw accuracy? Work on his short throw touch on the ball? 95MPH doesn’t work from 5 yards away! Leadership is earned and he HAS NOT earned anything because of his erratic way of doing everything.

  38. interdude Says:

I think Jameis took himself out of the leadership role when he ate a W

  39. FortMyersDave Says:

Dusthy Rhodes, nice to speak up, tell us who in the Buc locker room you would drop the bionic elbow on if possible (sans Gordon of course)?????…. Dude we need to dial this Buc ball back to 1976 ala your time bi guy when I was 11 and the Bucs going 0 for ever was okay because that is where Buc ball is now… Would it be VH3, Jameis, BA himself or Licht when he drunkenly wanders in the locker room thinking they actually won… Speak up big guy, we love the opinion of a real Tampa icon over some of the trolls who have taken over Joe’s site!

  40. Rayjay1122 Says:

BA can’t change a decade of losing in half a season isn’t a problem huh Pewter Power? Well how has he improved the team at all? They are worse than last season other than run defense. He has weakened the roster and is making as many dumb mistakes as a coach as the players on the field are making. Case in point.

Players are unprepared, poor game management such as the back to back time out attempt leading to a penalty, awful play calling, continued poor evaluation of talent, blaming position groups for failure and not holding Winston responsible for so many mistakes, not benching Winston when he is playing so poorly in favor of RG4 so we can determine if he can win as a starting QB and for continuing to do everything the same without making adjustments or changes.

You see idiot, it doesn’t matter if he has 5 seasons teamed up with Jason Licht, the results will not change but perhapscontinued losing is exactly what the Glazers, Licht and idiots like you deserve.

  41. Hodad Says:

How can you be a leader when your first throw of the first play of a game is an interception? Leadership starts at the top. Our top is meathead Licht, BS BA, and of course Moe, Larry, and Curley Glazer. Please those who want to blame Leftwich for all our offensive misery get a clue. This is Bruce Arains offense, his playbook. He chose these players, he drew up this offense. You act like he has nothing to do with play calling during the game. It doesn’t matter who calls the plays if the plays suck!

  42. Pete I Says:

The eating a W was horrifying. Not any level of football would that be a inspiring speech.

  43. VA Tom Says:

There is leadership, and then there is leadership. Problem is unless you are in that room you don’t know what KIND of leadership he provides? Is it over the top religious (nothing wrong with that depending on the audience). Is it rah rah childish stuff that men feel insulted by? Is it Over the Top? Then it isn’t leadership. Sometimes leadership is as much about WHO you are trying to lead as blabbing all over everyone. Leaders get it. And a lot of times leaders aren’t exactly focusing on being leaders, they just are. Reading between the lines I don’t imagine Jameis’s leadership matured to meet the audience. But WTF do I know? Just taking wild guesses since all I have to look forward to is hoping we don’t sink too low in the draft…not that we can draft…

  44. LargoBuc Says:

This thing is about two months away from being blown up. Time to start from scratch. Glazers need to be looking not for a head coach, but for a GM. Then let him hire his head coach, scouts, etc.

Really are you a prophet also? It doesnt matter? Let’s see your resume and how many teams you’ve coached or been the general manager of!!! You cam do all you want in the offseason but you never know what guys are made of until they are in real game situations and he said that training camp. You sound like an idiot blaming the coaches after half a season, I guess you were one of those idiots that preferred the team go the lovie route, get rid of a bunch of guys without seeing what type of players were already here. How the hell does holding or getting straight up whipped at the line of scrimmage have to do with coaching? I’m not even getting into winston because apparently the entire fanbase knows this offense better than the guy who created it. If you think winston will be benched for ryan griffin then that’s on you to deal with the disappointment, I prefer he play out the season so there is a clear answer to move on or franchise or whatever, no one really cares what you think you know 99% less than anyone working for the glazers.

Well Pewter, your not knowing the answer to that question confirms your level of intelligence. Who has the power to set the team depth chart? Answer: Arians.
Who has veto power over all decisions and play calling? Answer: Arians
Who has had input and endorsed the current roster? Yeah, again the answer is Arians.

The Glazers are very smart business men and obviously very successful money makers however, they are come he imbeciles when it comes to football. Nobody, not even you is 99% less intelligent than the morons that the Glazers have hired.

I understand wanting to support the Bucs. Trust me, I want them to be winners as much as anyone but the team hasbeen hijacked by idiot owners. Why did they fire Gruden? Because he has an ego? Because some belly aching players didn’t lime him? Whatever the reason, it was dumb and the beginning of the hijacking. He was a winning coach. I remember that run on 4th and like 16 against the falcons in 3015 I think it was. He broke tackles and forced his way to a first down. That’s still in him and that’s when I was sold on him. Joe, you make a very interesting point about leadership being overrated at the NFL level…I can remember a time when this team was adrift and onboarded an unheralded, but tough-as-nails FA linebacker from the Steelers who singlehandedly began to change the culture inside OBP by rooting out serial loafers, losers and turds by personally holding them accountable. Hardy Nickerson wasn’t fun loving. He was a complete and total @ss kicker who laid the foundation for a whole generation of youngsters, who eventually took up his charge.

Jameis’ brand of leadership isn’t the same as Hardy’s (see, ‘W, who wants to eat a’)…nor did he ever establish the necessary professional bona fides to carry weight in the locker-room (beyond his draft status). His Uber antics sure didn’t help.

That being said, I wonder if this generation of player is simply too self-absorbed to respond to Hardy, or Sapp’s brand of locker-room accountability. It sure seems like guys like JPP are trying to get through, but its just not working. The bulk of these guys just don’t seem to HATE LOSING as much as they hate not getting individual social media ‘likes’…

Leadership occurs via osmosis. You don’t need to draw attention yourself to lead, great leaders lead by example people pay attention to that and it raises them up in their performance up. Jameis does not have the maturity or the ability to lead by example

  78. Ruby Redress Says:

Read the signs…..it is plain as day that Jameis has not improved past his second year here. The post game mantra never changes…..I just gotta get better is not the answer because he peaked 3 years ago. Don’t know what he’s got on somebody but it seems to be the only explanation for keeping him around.

  79. Bucnjim Says:

    Frank Pillow,
Couldn’t have said it better! Would Ray Lewis tolerate the slackers on this team especially the ones being paid to be leaders? Nickerson is still one of my all time favorites for changing the long time losing culture. Now we need someone to change the soft AND losing culture.

  81. Bucsace Says:

  82. Anonymous Says:

It is simple really. After the Uber incident and suspension, with a further divided fan base, the Bucs don’t see him as the face of their franchise. He had much work to do to come to it, but with the season half gone, acts more mature but his play continues to be very erratic. So makes no sense to prop him up as a leader anymore. That is all on him.

  83. Oneilbucs Says:

Man I can’t wait for Jamies to leave. And when he does leave maybe this fan base will see what wins championships. Because all this talk about Jamies is the reason why we lose is a lie and a false narrative by the national media. Then when we go 3 and 13 next year just maybe you guys will be happy as long as Jamies is gone. Ain’t no rookie quarterback or even a veteran is going to help this team win. We don’t run the ball or play defense and all you guys see is Jamies.

Frank you named all defensive players and I agree with you. Until we get back to a defensive type of team we ain’t going to win nothing. Defense wins championships not quarterbacks. Go ask the 49ers , the Patriots both or undefeated and both has great defense and a good running game and all you guys care about is quarterback. Lol lol lol

So Arians wanted Shame Us to dial back the phony rah, rah BS. Probably because his teammates were ready to choke him out. Nothing like throwing a 3rd pick and then trying to get the team amped up for the 4th pick. What a tool!
