No Leaders?

October 13th, 2019

He said it.

Joe calls this loser talk, but here we are.

The Bucs fell to 2-4 today after the International Embarrassment the Bucs dropped in a soccer stadium in London.

In the days leading up to the game, Arians made an interesting comment when he said, “If we truly have leadership, we don’t lose two games in a row. That’s when your leaders show up.”

Of course, the Bucs got clobbered by the Saints last week. The Bucs have lost two in a row.

Personally, Joe thinks leader talk is loser talk. The only teams that talk about leadership are teams that lose, and they don’t want to talk about constantly getting their tails kicked between their legs so they reach for invisible, mystic caca to steer the narrative away from the brutal truth the team is lousy.

Ever hear or see winning teams talk about leadership? No, because those teams are too busy worrying about winning games and not creating empty excuses for losing.

And yes, at 2-4 and coughing up the ball seven times, plus the worst home record in 10 years in the NFC and no playoff games in 11 years, those are sure signs your organization and your team sucks.

But wait Jameis has only been here 5 years how can that be?

  2. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Sell the Team Glazer Boys.

You’ve lost every fan for a decade.

  3. JimmyJack Says:

Joe…..Willie McGinest talks about leadership all the time.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

No one creates better excuses to justify failure like a low standard glazer trained bucfan

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe…..sure we have multiple problems….but, let’s face it….when your QB is responsible for 6 turnovers…..you don’t need to look much further….

But when for over 4 years you label him “America’s QB”…..I understand that it’s about Leadership, Sports Science, Bobo, OJ, Scotty Miller, Evans, the Oline, Defense and the Coaches….looking forward to the hidden scapegoat….perhaps it’s Devin White, Savior with only 9 tackles today.

  6. 407Buc Says:

7 TO’s is laughable. This team is so awful.

  7. Hodad Says:

Licht, and Jameis need to be replaced next season. When your GM misses on a #1 picked QB he gets fired. Licht has missed on much more then Jameis. They both need to go.

  8. Architek79 Says:

Easily the worst team in pro sports – and not even close.

  9. Dcbucsfan Says:

    This team is cursed!!!!

  10. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Easy DB55. Josh Freeman had a drug infused meltdown and clashed with Schiano. Josh McCown was a stop gap and we tanked in 2014 for the savior QB in the “Chase for Jamies”

So the Jamies years are really indistinguishable form a sleepy Freeman and a glorified backup in McCown. Yet Winston is supposed to be a franchise QB?

  11. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

I had high yet unrealistic hopes for the BA Era. He doesn’t need the job/money/aggravation and his signing locked up Licht for another 5 year sentence for Bucs Fans. Franchise QB likely done here in Tampa…very few players above average and gapping holes everywhere. Otherwise, the franchise is in fine shape.

  12. D-Rome Says:

Speaking of leadership, Gerald McCoy led the Panthers with 2.5 sacks today.

  13. unbelievable Says:

    1st round picks under Licht:

    Evans – regressing?

    Jameis – still inconsistent

    VH3 – always sucked

    Howard – regressing?

    Vea – actually getting better

White – too early to tell but looked lost today until the 4th quarter

    Quite the track record….

  14. Petty Officer Buc Says:

$cam Newton gets replaced by Kyle Allen, and the team plays with a new found sense of life and confidence.

Winston is untouchable, however. He has somehow earned a starting job until the end of time. His resume is so impressive he just can’t be benched. He has earned the right to go out on his terms.

  15. PragueBucsFan Says:

No excuses Tmax. They just suck. Nothing more to say.

How come he could never do that as a buc???

Don’t get excited ladies Joe could get those numbers against bucs oline

  17. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

jason licht blew an entire draft class & then passed on players who are starting and playing at high levels. RoJo cant get on the field; oj cant catch or get thrown to; dalvin cook, laremy tunsil, derwin james, vonn bell, lael collins all could be bucs if there was a competent gm; ohh ya & the bucs are cap poor

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Sorry Joe, I agree with BA on this one. FIELD LEADERSHIP is vital to winning; just ask Bill Belicheck & the Patriots. Bucs were at their best when they had Brooks, Sapp & Lynch leading our defense … 3 different position groups each with strong LEADERSHIP.

Bucs have better LEADERSHIP right now on defense than they have on offense, despite the fact that our defense is still relatively young. Our offense looked totally discombobulated today, void of any leadership on the field. Guys aren’t blocking; guys aren’t getting open; and meanwhile Jameis spent the afternoon dancing around like a Russian bear at the circus. No one’s calming them down; no one’s trying to get them all on the same page. That offense was totally void of LEADERSHIP.

And Byron Leftwich certainly isn’t helping the cause. He’s clueless and needs to be replaced by BA like RIGHT NOW. That game-plan and game-calling aggravated the Bucs’ situation, not helped it. I’d rather see Harold Goodwin or even Clyde Christensen calling plays right now (if BA refuses to do it himself).

  19. 401Buc Says:

When Keuchly intercepted Winston late I had to laugh. Same Ol Bucs baby. Winston isn’t the guy. I’ve stopped defending him. If that means BA has to go next year idc.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

D-Rome … “Speaking of leadership, Gerald McCoy led the Panthers with 2.5 sacks today.” And that gives GMC exactly 2.5 sacks ON THE SEASON. All against the Bucs.

  21. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Defense Rules: You need to realize that Bruce Arians isn’t here to coach players, he is here to coach the coaches and get them Head Coaching jobs around the leauge.

Playcallng will NEVER be taken from Leftwich because Arians cares more about hooking up his friends and buddies than he cares about the franchise. Licht is a glorified Yes man to Arians at this point.

  22. Pewter power Says:

What the hell are you talking about joe? Every winning team has leadership. If you have been losing for over a decade those are the teams that need leadership. It’s not loser talk it’s a losing team. Guess handy knickerson didnt really make much of a difference back in the day!!!! Theres plenty of bad to talk about but using this quote from before the game is just petty.

  23. tmaxcon Says:

    Defense Rules

There has not been leadership on the bucs since sapp left building. Results prove it…..

Leadership starts at the top. Hiring washed up old men to do a mans job is just another long list of mistakes made by glazers…. old people need to stick to bingo and shuffleboard leave football to the still living.

  24. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    No QUARTERBACK….

  25. Rayjay1122 Says:

This team sucks. Anyone who defends them and says be patient, sucks as bad as the team.

  26. BucsBandit Says:

My guess is that team has lost faith in the guy that’s supposed to be their #1 LEADER… and that’s Jameis Winston.

These guys bust their butts in the weight room and practice, get their bodies ready to take a beating on Sundays, and Winston too often “gives away” the games.

When Arians says the team lacks leadership, he’s mostly talking about Winston. Winston isn’t stepping up and getting the O-Line guys together and having pep talks with them so they can execute better. I rarely see him taking blame for his poor throws or lost fumbles and saying, “Hey! That was on ME. My bad. Let’s go recover in the next series and get us a TD.”

The Jameis Winston Experiment in Tampa Bay is DONE. Time for a fresh start and new direction for this team.

  27. Ed Says:

Poor preparation, poor execution, poor performance. It’s a team loss but clearly the quarterback and secondary were subpar. You get an undead Ted quarterback to outplay a $20,000,000 QB and the most expensive offensive line to not hold up and a secondary full of high draft picks that can’t cover #2 and #3 receivers you are in deep trouble. Panthers are not playoff caliber and Bucs will have another 5 win season.

  28. Ed Says:

    Undrafted rookie QB

  29. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … I thought Devin White played a solid game for his first game back since Game 1. He was credited with 8 solo tackles (9 total) plus that 1 TFL in the 4th qtr. Thought the defense did very well stopping the run & McCaffrey, but their pass defense is still shaky (although they did play tighter today). Looks to me like our young Secondary gets itself trapped far too often behind the receivers on crossing & comeback routes … position is everything, and these just aren’t getting enough PDs (2 TOTAL on the day is really bad).

But still, when your offense makes 6 turnovers & gave the Panthers great field position several times as a result (plus the 1 S/Ts turnover), your defense doesn’t have a chance. They held the Panthers to 59 yds on 29 rushes, and held Allen to 20-of-32 completions passing (62.5%) but couldn’t get enough pressure on him most of the day.

The story of that game though was the Bucs’ offense horrid performance. When your first half drives end in INT, Punt, Punt, Punt, TD, INT, Fumble, Punt and your second half drives end in Punt, INT, FG, TD, Punt, TD, INT, INT you can be pretty much assured that you lost the game.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Tmaxcon … I agree with you about Sapp BTW. Love him or hate him, he held EVERYONE ACCOUNTABLE on the field. He and Brooks & Lynch were the FIELD GENERALS for their respective position groups. They got everyone on the same page & after a year or so working with Tony & Monte, that Bucs’ defense really kicked arse.

I think that this young defense has several guys who can step into similar roles (Vea, White, Edwards especially) but we’ll have to wait & see on that I guess. I was proud of them today because they didn’t quit, despite the gross field position that they were often handed. SEVEN turnovers by your team have to be depressing even on the heartiest defenders. Nearly impossible to bounce back from that.

  31. WillieG Says:

Leadership is essential to any winning team. You’re a fool if you think otherwise. It isn’t a coincidence that the best Bucs’ team had the best leaders.

I can’t believe I still waste my time reading the insipid drivel here. Maybe I need some leadership to steer me towards more educated and informed Bucs news? You know, a non Jameis apologist site that provides actual news.

  32. Sydney Says:

    Sometime in early November:

“Due to remerging health concerns, Coach Bruce Arians will be permanently stepping down as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles will take over as interim coach for 3-9 Bucs, currently in last place in the NFC South.”

  33. TampaTown Says:

Joe is clearly frustrated and who can blame him? To add insult to injury, this $hit show costs them money. Usually I would be having a meltdown myself and I think I’m just numb. No one thought the right side of the OL might be a problem today? Didn’t think it might get your QB nearly killed? There’s no answers left and it’s just hopeless no matter what we do. I give up.

  34. Sydney Says:

    *Sometime in early December:

  35. Boltsfan17 Says:

No leaders on the field or on the sideline.

I was very wary of Arians’ hiring as I believe it was simply a ploy for Licht to keep his job. He’s shown me nothing in in terms of team improvement.

The Bucs must draft a QB with that first pick and hope that can breathe some fresh air into this god awful franchise.

  36. Pete I Says:

Soccer stadium? Oh you mean that awesome new stadium, built with NFL football in mind, the future home of the London Buccaneers.

Better get used to the Tottenham press box.

You guys will them be JoeBucsBlokes…

    Fish and chips anyone.

  37. Howard Cosell Says:

    glasers:
1.) Keep your American football team in England permanently and never set foot in Tamps again.
    Tampa Sports Authority:
1.) Buy out the glasers lease and use the stadium for concerts
2.) Sue the glasers into the stoneage (Lol, nice thought but Howard
knows theyre above the law so to speak)

  38. Howard Cosell Says:

Anyone know when the glaser lease at RayJay expires?
Expect them to move soon thereafter…to Enland

  39. Pete I Says:

The lease at RayJay could be broken with no real issues if the NFL and the Glazers wanted to.

And a lawsuit can’t keep the Bucs at Ray Jay, it could only pay whatever damages or the lease amount to buy out the lease.

    Easy for the NFL.

  40. Howard Cosell Says:

The team signed a stadium lease in which the local government must pay for almost all of the stadium expenses while the franchise keeps almost all of the proceeds.

    – Wikipedia

  41. Howard Cosell Says:

Lol…Howard is saying a lawsuit to expel the team not keep it

  42. Mike Johnson Says:

I am sueing the Bucs for my alcoholism. I finished a whole liter of scotch watching them lose. Good scotch though.

  43. Howard Cosell Says:

I might be able to sue them for emotional abuse right?
This is the age of political correctness!

  44. Ben real Says:

Joe leadership talk is important… there’s plenty of teams that have winning records in all sports and there’s y’all of leadership or leaders … we need to talk about leaders in your workplace because you suck

  45. Bosch Says:

BucNut is right. So are you ready to get serious Tampa? Boycott the Glazers. I’m talking full sanctions here. Give them NO fan support.

  46. SJ_Bucsfan Says:

I think the QB whisperer is realizing thata box of hammers hears no whispers…

  47. DanBucsfan Says:

Anyone else notice that D. White looks lost out there? I sure hope he picks it up but he just doesn’t seem to be very impressive at all. And I am one of those Bucs fans that gives the players the benefit of doubt.

  48. Bosch Says:

No comments between 401 and 442? What is this? Communist China censorship?

  49. Bosch Says:

    I stand corrected

  50. Mike10 Says:

Know how you lose 11 years?

2 failed 1st round QBs will do it. They say it’s a 5 year set back every time you guess wrong on one.

Wonder how much longer/how many more QBs this will go on for.

  51. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Mike Evans should be stripped of the C today. After the ultimate “craftsman over talent” HOF WR is calling your effort out, twice (and the ultimate “made himself out of nothing” HOF QB adds on), you’re not a leader. The last two games are totally different if Evans tried at all.

  52. BucsFanForLife Says:

I’d trade OJ Howard for Adam Humphries straight up. Howard has stone hands. He’s another bust.

  53. gotbbucs Says:

It’s really almost amazing how heavily this team can sh!t all over themselves at any given time.
Last week the let Teddy Checkdown pick them apart. This week they give up 200 yards of offense and Winston decides to set a new low with 5 interceptions and a lost fumble.
Winston is a crap QB, but this coaching staff and front office are garbage as well. You have to physically try to game plan this poorly and suck this loudly. It’s a catastrophic failure from top to bottom. There are much less talented teams out there that put a better product on the field weekly.

On a side note, franchise QB’s don’t throw interceptions on the 1st play of the game, and Winston almost has a habit of this it seems. Franchise QB’s don’t throw 10 ints in the first 5 games of the season. Franchise QB’s in today’s game rarely throw ints, period anymore.
Get the picture. This guy isn’t a franchise QB. If Licht tries to talk the Glazers into giving Winston $30+ million per year they should fire him on the spot and check him into the psych ward.

Licht should be frozen right now from trading any future picks or players away for anything or anybody.

  54. TeethingBrat Says:

If Doug Williams would have had as many turnovers as Winston. Just think about it.

  55. TeethingBrat Says:

Stop going to the games. If you care about a needed change, stop going.

  56. Alanbucsfan Says:

When G McCoy gets 2 1/2 sacks, you know your qb is clueless…

  57. BucsFan76 Says:

Here’s my biggest concern: I don’t trust this GM or coaching staff to draft Winston’s replacement. This is going to be a mess.

  58. CPN Says:

The Bucs are Licht years ahead of the competition drafting DBs, kickers, and Winston.

  59. DalvinCookRules Says:

Need to bring in a GM who knows what he is doing. Plain and simple. NO Winston is never going to be a consistently winning QB in this League, but the team’s failures today were much more than JW (despite his truly mind-boggling 6 turnovers).

I will make this ONE POINT, however, just to try to add a shred of sanity to the conversation: there is more PARITY in the NFL today than ever before. Aside from a couple trainwrecks like Wash & Miami at the very bottom, any team really is capable of winning on any given Sunday–except against New England.

NE is the one team that plays this game better than everyone else. They are the card counters–they are able to give themselves the slight advantage in every game that over a long period COMPOUNDS into a unique echelon of success. So, don’t fret! It is not like there is another team in the NFL that has consistently made the SB the past 10 years. It is truly a crapshoot which team other than NE goes to the SB every year.

  60. Buczilla Says:

Agreed, awesome article. Nothing like thinking about the draft in the middle of October. I’m gearing up baby!

  61. Bruce Blahak Says:

They closed the door on London move too…They don’t even want them…home game lol

  62. ClodHopper Says:
