Defensive Player Of The Year?

October 1st, 2019

Drank Jared Goff’s Gatorade.

Man, this is almost too good to be true.

When is the last time you heard of any Bucs defender being seriously touted as being a “Defensive Player of the Year” in September?

Well, that is what is happening with pass rusher Shaq Barrett.

Nate Davis of USA Today is serious when he dares to write that Barrett should be seriously considered as the best NFL defender when the NFL hands out hardware in February.

However it’s Tampa Bay LB Shaquil Barrett who’s shockingly the early front runner for NFL defensive player of the year honors. He registered his league-best ninth sack Sunday — tying a record for most through a season’s first four games — adding an INT and forced fumble for good measure.

This guy Barrett is like some gift from God who fell from the sky. Honestly, where would the Bucs defense be without him? He’s already good for one win (Carolina) and perhaps two (Los Angeles).

The way Joe sees it, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht should re-sign America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and franchise Barrett this offseason

And yesterday, Joe saw more than a couple of references from national sports types throw out this award and Barrett’s name in the same sentence.

Another meaningless award if your team does not compete for a championship…. bucfan is so used to losing they cling to meaningless rankings, pro bowls and other laughable personal achievements….. if the team is collecting basement titles at a record pace personal achievements are meaningless and downright laughable…. the object is to win not collect awards for feel good stories….. win in the postseason that is impressive everything else is BS

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Celebrating meaningless awards is no different than dancing on the sidelines down by 30 after a meaningless play…. oh wait bucfan loves thier dancing clowns too…

Barrett is Heaven sent, to help our Bucco’s back to glory!

Wise thinking presently, imo. Winston definitely has a lot more history here and in the league.

Ding! For all we know, Shaq is having a fluke season. Nothing wrong with giving him another (or two more) prove-it one-year contracts.

Willing to bet, unless he is franchised, Barrett will test the market. When a guy gets on the open market, all bets are off.

  8. Lamarcus Says:

Shaq Barrett is having a HOF season.

Suh is super fast and to think he came here to tank and clinched it in front of his naysayers in LA in GMC jersey. He gets some credit also. And I was wrong about Vea This guy will be elite

  9. Rod Munch Says:

I’m fine with waiting a bit to make sure Shaq isn’t the Fitz of defenses, where he can have a HOF pace for a few games, then disappear for 10 games in a row. Very very risky to pay something huge money with such a limited track record for the team – BUT it doesn’t hurt to ask and see what he might want. I mean if they can give him JPP’s money for a year if you resign him now, then of course, take it – but I don’t think he’d take it. In any case lets see where we are in week 9, if he’s still performing at this pace and Winston is still looking strong, then yeah, resign Winston to his big deal and have the tag for Shaq.

In any case it’s a good issue to have, and if Shaq keeps it up then we can finally erase the anti-American piece of garbage old lady shoving dog abandoner Michael Bennett from the conversation.

I think the media should just stay out of it.

  12. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Maxcon…odds are if this guy wins DPOY the Bucs are right in the thick of it, and have a premier talent to, wait for it, WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS for years. Laugh all you want at “Buc fan”, the Bucs HAVE a championship unlike other teams and certainly have the talent to seek another one.

Defensive player of the year ? What!!
I tell you what let’s beat the Saints in the dome.

D Player of the year. 4 games into the season.
This team & fans will be reading headlines all week.
Hey what’s up coach Belichick ( move on)

  14. Delawest Says:

    Next game Saints Thanks you.

  15. Delawest Says:

Lol the Champs is still talking about the Bills.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Now that we’ve albeit said bye-bye to JPP, Bucs NEED to re-sign Barrett to a long-term deal. It’s not like we have an overabundance of pass rushers waiting in the halls of One Buc Palace (like the 0-4 Denver Broncos thought they had when they let Shaq walk?).

  17. Vico Says:

We might not get to the playoffs, but this man is not only giving us hope of that, he’s making the games worthwhile. We would have to win10 in total, that’s 8 of the last 12 which is something unexpected but let’s see. I wouldn’t be confident 9 wins would be enough to get there, as previous 9 win seasons have shown us.

  18. Bucs Fan in ATL Says:

Best FA signing in the last decade. Team Glazer is going to part ways with a bunch of money when they have to sign both Barret and Jameis. Being in Salary Cap trouble, hopefully Licht has a plan with either paying the man or utilizing the Franchise Tag. On a side note, since we are talking about paying the man. Chris Godwin is going to command WR-1 money if he keeps up his performance…not sure when his contract is up, but I would think the sooner we sign him to an extension the better off the Bucs will be in terms of cap issues.

  19. TDTB Says:

Shaq is performing incredibly well. He deserves a ton of credit. That said, he played with a lot of talent in Denver and never had this kind of impact (he was a regular player and starter before last year) so I wonder if Coach Todd gets some of this credit. Is it scheme related? Will his production decrease if JPP or somebody similar is playing opposite? I don’t know the answers to those questions, but it does make you pause. If he wants reasonable money (even a pay increase this year) I’m all for it. If he’s trying to break the bank then a tag is a better course.

  20. DooshLaRue Says:

    Speaking not a fluke season…….
Maybe that’s what we’re seeing from Jaboo so far?

  21. ModHairKen Says:

This is a 2-2 team that has blown an 18 point lead and have up 30+ and 40 points in the first 4 games. Why is anyone worried about postseason awards?

Is the defense better? What was the record after 4 games last year? 2-2. And the defense gave up 40 and 40 and 38.

    Let’s have some perspective.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The way Joe sees it, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht should re-sign America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and franchise Barrett this offseason

    Objective considerations of this plan:

    • A pro is it guarantees Barrett will be here at least 2 more years

    • It would be at top dollar each year, so his price would keep going up

    • Jameis Winston has improved, but has he earned that contract yet? As much as I think he will, I don’t think he has…yet. Not to the point of $30 million per year. And James will not take less knowing he can get it if franchised.

    • Licht is in a catch 22. What if Barrett is a one year wonder? Or a 6 game wonder? But what if he isn’t?

    • With every game he performs in his price could go up.

    • Say we go all the way…then Barett will have a ring. His price will be sky-high then. But Jameis ‘ would be possibly double that

I get what you are saying, but this year could prove different because of division injuries. If the other teams are playing poorly, we could actually get in with 9 wins.

But here’s something else to consider: the Bucs, amazingly, are playing better away than at home, and since we have 5 away games in a row ahead of us, that could play in our favor.

By the time we have another home game:

    • Winston could be dramatically improved
    • The Defense should be in a rhythm
    • It will be time for JPP to return

So it is very possible we could get 10 or more wins going forward. Which bring another key consideration…

    • If we make the playoffs, anything can happen. The Bucs would be hitting their stride at the right moment.

In the past few years, a different team from our division has played in the NFC Championship Game what? 3 of 5 years? 3 of 4? A pattern has developed. And according to that pattern, it’s the Buccaneers turn to get there.

  25. RustyRhinos Says:

No way Joe, I say we sign Barrett and tag the “franchise” to see if this season for him is a fluke. Barrett has shown he can do this already he just needed to be out of Denver and Miller’s & Chubb shadow and get playing time. Who is it that Winston has had shadowing him? Fitzpatrick, Glennon, Griffin. Gabbert. Anyone of these guys over shadowing Winston? (Can he handle the pressure of someone looking over his shoulder) We can wait and see the seasons results with both, then decide. Who gets tagged to prove it again.
Keep it up both of you, let us see who is still on top of their game at seasons end.

SHOW ME EVENT in the big easy. Keep SHOWING UP! Playing to win not just have fun and participate, have fun and DOMINATE!

    GO BUCS!!!

  26. Tmax would complain about anything go away dude Says:

Dang dude! You are without a doubt the biggest little beeaaatxh on the planet! Complain Complain Complain let’s enjoy the accomplishment for a while. We all KNOW how bad the Bucs have sucked in years past excuse us for being happy for a well deserving player!

  27. Pewter power Says:

Some of us believed in this guy the whole time unlike local media who talked talk about the pass rush all offseason, You know who you are. Could have never predicted this type of production but fans knew he was a good pass rusher.

  28. Youngbucs Says:

Pewter power I knew the Shaq attack was coming didn’t think he’d have 9 sacks to lead the league what a beast.

  29. BucDan Says:

Are you haters watching the game tape? Dude is in the QB’s face on almost every pass play. He missed one sack at the goal line (ARGH!) and had multiple QB pressures/hurries – WHICH MEANS HE’S IN THE QB’s FACE!

This isn’t Noah Spence we’re talking about. The guy has an arsenal on moves, AND GUESS WHAT? He made the game-sealing play! Just like us Buc Fans have always wanted! That’s more in line with Sapp and Simeon than McCoy anyday!

Ungodly Godwin for OPOY. This is his 3rd year and he’s already proving himself. Buc Luck better back off–POX on it! Barrett plays next to a unrecognized DPOY: LVD, as well as having Bowles as his HC. Bucs have had DPOYs. in the past. Not certain about OPOY?

  33. BushidoEvans Says:

The Bucs have Cap this offseason it will be in the top 10 if I’m not mistaken.
