Trust

September 26th, 2019

Losing trust?

Just like respect and disrespect — and the Bucs are sure disrespected these days — trust is also earned, not given.

And in the mind Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, has work to do before he wins over his offensive coaches.

The way the Bucs went totally turtle in the second half of last week’s game after throttling the Giants in the first half, it sure raised a few eyebrows.

And then the Bucs went full-blown Ground Chuck Knox after Jameis threw a second-half pick, which included nine straight runs after the interception, Kapadia types it was clear Bucs coaches lost faith in Jameis.

The loss obviously was not solely on that one kick. Earlier in the quarter, the Bucs had a first-and-10 from the Giants’ 13 and ran the ball three times in a row before kicking a field goal. It’s no surprise that they didn’t trust Winston to avoid a mistake, but still, it can be tough to win when you’re that afraid of your QB throwing an interception. The Bucs wasted great individual efforts from Barrett and Evans and blew an 18-point halftime lead to a rookie quarterback making his first NFL start.

Now to be fair, Bucco Bruce Arians said yesterday he did not take the ball out of Jameis’ hands for fear he would throw another pick, or worse, a pick-six like he did (twice) against the 49ers.

As Kapadia pointed out, not trusting a quarterback means you are playing with one hand tied behind your back. The Bucs are not a good enough team to do this and win. The late-1990s Bucs had such a team and did their best to hide the quarterback. This team isn’t the old Bucs.

If coaches truly don’t trust Jameis — Joe hears what Arians is saying but Joe also saw what transpired before Joe’s eyes Sunday– then what’s the point? If that is the case, then play Ryan Griffin and get in the mix for Tanking for Tua and see if you can catch the Dolphins.

If Jameis plays like he did on Sunday he deserves to be back. But if the coaches don’t trust him, then it’s time to fish or cut bait.

  1. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is absolutely no way that Arians or Leftwich would admit they didn’t trust Jameis…….no way…..but they didn’t.

Here is the problem going forward…

    They can’t trust Jameis
    They can’t trust Gay
    They can’t trust our Defense

And most importantly, they can’t trust themselves.

  2. pittsshore Says:

taking the ball out of JW’s hand was a smart move. We would have won the game if Ryan Griffin would have started. Stevie Wonder could have thrown for 300 yards against the Giants D, the worst D in the NFL.

  3. widerightandleft Says:

Tua,while very talented is a Mariota clone .Injury waiting to happen.

  4. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

  6. Alanbucsfan Says:

Jameis had his chance to win the game at the end with an accurate pass.
But in his mind, just completing the pass was good enough.
It’s not his fault the rookie blew the kick,
The bottom line- when the team needed him to respond to defensive breakdowns, he was sacked, intercepted and came up short- lost again.

  7. LordCornelius Says:

The only drive it looked like they didnt possibly “trust” him was the drive Rojo ran wild and we went run-run-run in the red zone. But the run game was clicking.

We didn’t go turtle in the 2nd half as much as we stalled on drives:

    Starting from the 2nd half:

    Drive 1 – Run / Pass (for a 1st) / Run/Run then couldn’t convert 3rd and 3 pass – PUNT (3 Run / 2 Pass)

    Drive 2 – Run / Pass (incomplete) / Pass (sack) – PUNT
    (2 Pass / 1 run)

Drive 3 – Run / Pass (incomplete) / Pass (1st down) / Run / Run (1st down) / Pass (SACK) / false start – drive is screwed – pass / pass but not enough yardage – PUNT
    (5 pass / 3 runs)

And that was the entire 3rd quarter and where we gave back up a huge lead.

That was more so about lack of execution – primarily in 2 drives being killed by sacks and sacks/penalties.

Combine that with giving up a 75 yard TD due to a missed tackle by Edwards, and then another big play given up on another drive – that resulted in 15 points for the Giants in just 4 minutes of possession – and that’s where the game turned.

  8. pittsshore Says:

Hey Joe, quick question. Why does the local Tampa Bay media not ask closed end questions when Arians is on the podium. I know its Tampa but they continue to send volley ball questions. Especially the Jenna chick. It was the same with Dirk and his predecessors. I would prefer them to be more like the NY/Philly media.

  10. pittsshore Says:

One more point: JW’s season total QBR rating is 38.3, which is 25th in the league. He is also 1-2 for the season and should be 0-3.

  12. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Pittshore-
The team could easily be 3-0 if the qb could/would play 4 qtrs without his head finding a way up his arse.

  13. Anonymous Says:

The whole body of work, including this season, is Jameis is inconsistent and makes bad decisions sprinkled with big plays and controversy that make him incompatible with being a franchise QB and leader of the team. Most knowing fans already know this, and Arians will not say it because it opens up the question of why he took the “fix Jameis” job to start with. Nothing has changed here. You don’t play Griffin until the Bucs are officially out of contention. When that happens, no one can question moving on from Winston, which should have happened end of 2017. Even his FSU loyal will understand the decision if he plays he11 or highwater through the season. Make no mistake though. This team WILL move on. It would be GREAT to trade the one man clownshow soonest to a team that loses their starter to sweeten the pot for the rebuild effort. Also, don’t believe a word Arians says. In three shorts weeks, he is less believable than Koetter, Lovie, or Schiano.

  14. down in the dirt doug Says:

You can tell Jameis 100 times a day that you trust him,but actions always speak louder than words.Your mother may have said that you are a big boy now,but she still sends you to the movies with your older brother.Time to let Jameis rise or fall on his own merits.GO GET UM JAMEIS!!!!!!!

  15. Anonymous Says:

Hall of Fame career track. LOL! What a joke Winston is. Arians can’t say what smart Bucs fans already know because it begs the question of why he took the job. Winston will not be back next year. Thank God. Please trade him now to sweeten the rebuilding pot with a high pick, maybe 2nd round to a desperate team (they’d have to be to want Winston). Those who think if he plays like he did Sunday that he will be back are dreaming. First, he can’t do it. And the sample of three games so far this year is a cross section of the last four years. Inconsistency, poor decisions sprinkled with some great plays now and then. But not enough. ABW – Anyone But Winston. And…no, they will only put Griffin in for his own experience but this won’t happen until playoff hopes are zilch. They will give all the Winston disciples all the film they need to understand why Winston is not the guy. 3-13, maybe. by the bye week, they will be 1-5, soon to get much worse after.

  16. BucsBandit Says:

    OLD NEWS.

I posted this right after that game. The Jameis Homers pounced on me for saying BA lost faith in Winston and was afraid he’d lose the game.

  17. mp8499 Says:

Wild guess here: We had a lead, its the 4th quarter, they were gaining CHUNKS of yards every run. Why wouldnt we keep pounding it and run the clock? Maybe not run 3 straight from the 13. That was dumb.

  18. ocala Says:

If that is the case then move on from Jamies.
I think the real answer is they made a bad decision to get conservative and they compounded the problem with poor coaching decisions at the end of the game.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it wasnt the play calling but rather execution……

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  20. miken Says:

@lord…. 2 drives being killed by sack and sack penalties… That’s part of not trusting JW. He hangs on and takes too long and penalties or sacks come. 3 straight runs starting at 1st and 13 is not trusting your qb… especially after watching that brutal pick he threw. Of course the pick didn’t hurt, but the coach takes it into account when calling plays

  21. LordCornelius Says:

    @813

That game basically broke every possible way in terms of good luck / execution for Giants.

2 huge plays that lead to 2 huge TDs.
    A 2 point conversion.
A 4th down conversion for a TD from the 6
The other team missing 3 PAT level kicks.

We didn’t catch 1 break while the Giants caught 6. Mike Edwards also dropped a would-be interception at one point.

One of the weirdest flukey losses I can remember. Not as bad as the collapse against DC. That was going turtle in its finest form.

  22. LordCornelius Says:

    @miken

I’d have to watch the tape but I remember at least one of those sacks happening within a few seconds of the snap. Context matters with all of this. Jameis definitely took some sacks that were on him. just not sure which ones.

  23. ModHairKen Says:

I thought running the ball made sense. It ate up the clock. I hope they do it next time they have the lead.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

imo, the play of the game was brate getting stopped on 3rd&1 i believe…..he has to get that 1st down….good play design and call because i wasnt expecting that…..

brate has to win that 1on1 battle….better execution on that play and we salt the game away…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

    i agree….

we couldnt catch a break….lol…giants caught all of them….

it is what it is…..im over the giants….im ready for sunday…..i like our chances….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  26. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

pshore you are 100% on that about the lapdawg media esp the spn chick, she just sits there and takes whatever licht and arians throw out there as teh gospel without ever prying into the why or what ifs

Jenna: “Bruce what would you have done if the Giants declined that delay of game penalty so that your FG kicker could move back 5 yards because you do not trust him kicking an extra point?”

  27. Jim Says:

You could read it clearly on the face of Leftwich, the 3rd pre-season game.

  28. D-Rome Says:

That’s been my point all week, Joe. If the coaches don’t trust their QB to make a play when it matters (their actions show they don’t) then he’s not the QB of the future. You should never take the ball out of the hands of your supposed franchise QB the amount of times that they did.

  29. Bruce Blahak Says:

WinSTUNNED the game manager. That’s all he has left to be…

  30. Jean Lafitte Says:

lol Griffin might win games ..and why not?

    Daniel Jones did it.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It is entirely possible that Arians privately told Licht & the Glazers that he would do the best he could with Winston but if that didn’t work, he would draft and develop a new QB
Publicly, he supports Winston totally….and he should.

  32. DooshLaRue Says:

Hey BA, next time we get a lead of at least 14 points just tell Jaboo that he did a great job and you’re so impressed that your gonna give him the rest of the game off.

He might just believe it and I’d love to see RG4 come in and see what he can do?
If Griffin screws up, then put JW back in, but at least we’ll know what we got.

  33. DBS Says:

IMO the offense needed to score 1 more time on its 8 trips to the red zone. So far I see no difference in the Koetter results. Fall on their faces. Expect thru these games for the kicker to save their a$$ again. If Cam was not hurt he would have beat them because they could not get it done. 18 points this game. Good luck against the Rams

  34. ChanEpic Says:

This post is the biggest circle jerk this site has ever seen, and that’s saying a lot.
So many talent scouts and unemployed coaches and sports writers here, it’s a wonder why none of you guys aren’t employed in the NFL. I wonder why that is considering how much more you people know than actual NFL coaches. But, yeah one writer confirms your bias and you froth at the mouth, circle jerk begins. Have fun with that!
    Go Bucs.

  35. Grt1 Says:

Can’t put up 30 plus every time not Winston fault….. you have to make that kick!!!

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m trying to find anything positive about that missed kick….(very difficult) but here it is.

Matt Gay failed to bail out BA, Leftwich the defense……offensive red zone impotency, and himself.

Now we are forced to talk about all of these failures instead of enjoying a 2-1 record.

  37. Pewter power Says:

Funny how opinions are made facts. I’m sorry what use is a kicker? Its Winston’s fault the rookie kicker missed awe poor him. Kickers have one job the most laid back training camps, the coached sweat more than kickers. He should not have missed routine kick. I find it odd saying he’s not trusted after a great game when in fact Matt gay is now the question mark. This team will be fine bucs fans are just drama queens three games in and the sky is falling because of what you’ve been programmed to think all offseason

  43. Oneilbucs Says:

Yall can try to blame Jamies all you want but he put the team in position to win and just like the pass the defense and kicking game gave up the game….. if that was Philip Rivers yall will be saying good game Rivers or Wentz , Or Goff yall wouldn’t be saying nothing about their performance. Now I ask a question doing training camp. What does it mean to say this is Jamies last year to get it done right ? But what if Jamies plays good and we still lose? But now I know the answer it doesn’t matter how good Jamies plays yall will blame him anyway. He’s in a lose lose position with this trash fan base. Yall hate Jamies so much that yall blame Jamies for the lost and he played good. How come we have to score 40 points a game just to win ? Now anybody please answer the questions…But yall can’t lol lol lol

  44. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can’t we all just get along?

  46. BigHog Says:

Am I allowed to say this …will say it any way, it was absolutely THAT GUY’S fault that we lost that game, we were on a winning drive for the winning field goal, FAMOUS did his job and THAT GUY missed the kick, they say it’s hard to win in this league, your wins won’t always be pretty or blowouts but this one we should have taken!!! Will this loss MAKE OR BREAK US…we shall soon see!!GO BUCS HO FAMOUS GO ROJO GO SHUY GO SHAQ!!!

13 more games fellas! Light some incense, hold hands, do whatever it takes to win some games!

  49. Licht Headed Says:

No Guts Arians blows. Just another in a series of bad hires. Winston will move on to another team where he will win a ring while Gump and Gutless steer the sinking Bucs ship.

  50. July Joe Says:

Dumbest article by the TB TIMES of the year. Jameis threw 37 passes, had another 3-4 called for him where he got sacked. The coaching staff asked him to sling them to victory … that’s what he did in the first half … and then the coaching staff relaxed and decided to play it safe … that happens all the time in the NFL. It had nothing to do with trust and everything to do with trying to run clock and end the game on the ground … and it would have worked had Gay not missed a chip-shot after Jameis came up clutch and got them in position slinging it.

  51. Fire the fans Says:

Absolutely right joe, sh*t or get off the pot. Either he loses games for us and their worries were warranted, or he finally comes into his own. If there is no faith, then what’s the point?

  52. ChanEpic Says:

@Anonymous – I don’t know for sure. So, are you? If not, why ask the question?

  53. ChanEpic Says:

@Anonymous – If NFL coaches and scouts are hanging out and posting nonsense on JBF.com, then they HAVE to be Bucs scouts and coaches and we now have much more insight into why this team sucks year in and year out, they’ve hired a bunch of know-nothing weirdos who have nothing better to do than post nonsense on JBF.com DURING the season. LOL You’ve got to be kidding me.

  54. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Why would anyone associated with the Bucs trust Winston? On or off the field? Seriously!!

  55. Pickgrin Says:

    Lord C –
Thank you for that 3rd Q play selection breakdown and insightful analysis of it – which btw completely dispels these myths that the offense “went turtle” in the 2nd half and that BA/Leftwich don’t trust Jameis Winston…

We lost – thats it. The offense – Winston to Evans more specifically made the necessary spectacular play at the end – when it counted most- to win the game. The kicker choked. That’s it. We’re on to the city of “Angels”…

Learn from the mistakes made in the last game and give the NFC Champ Rams your best effort next Sunday.

That’s all this team can do right now.

Anyone who thinks this Bucs team isn’t talented enough or good enough to beat the Rams in 3 days is wrong.

  56. stpetebucsfan Says:

    TBBF

Nice find of the silver lining after depressing us with that first…sadly accurate post.

As far as whether BA/Leftwich trust JW there is something being omitted. While I agree that it’s critical going forward and support why folks are asking the question I have perhaps an equally important question.

BA’s trust is important…perhaps an even more important question….Does JW trust JW?

He just appears to be playing scared at times this year. DB55 may be right…perhaps JW has taken too many hits and lost his cojones. Perhaps the memory of all those pick sixes infects his nightmares at night. Perhaps the pressure of a totally disappointing career is building to an unsustainable level.

I do not know for sure how BA feels or even JW. But both of them APPEAR to have lost confidence in our offense at times…some of them like Sunday…critical times.

  57. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JulyJoe

Yeah we get it…unlike the Cincy game last year and many others nobody can pin this loss on JW. It was truly a team loss including horrid coaching decisions.

I just wonder why none of the JW apologists never bring up that second half int that was truly inexplicable. What the hell happened. He wasn’t hit…he wasn’t baited into it by a smart DB…he simply lofted a wounded quail…perhaps it slipped in his hands.

Also not noted is 3 points in the second half. This wasn’t a playoff game against a killer defense. The Giants are just one spot from the very bottom of the pile at 31st.

We just played like people trying to avoid losing more than going for the win. I hate that!!!

  58. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Stpete.. interesting post except QBs don’t get hit anymore, so while Jameis has been sacked and TFL … nothing like the beatings QBs took 2-3 years ago and before.

  59. Bnice Says:

@ Pittshorecrybaby Looking at winstons stats at the moment and his QBR is 85.5 on the year and even against the niners it was 45.4 so where did you find 38.3?!?!?! Quit acting like a little f ing cry baby.

  60. Isaac haggins Says:

The scoring drives to start the game were not matched by any NFL team so the good out weighs the bad and with Winston it’s a work in progress to bring the ball down and throw down hill ( way way better than he was ) so if as a coach you turtle then you will never really know !!! Arians and Leffty turtled which serves no purpose!!! Bad Management for the organization, terrible !!!! You have to let Winston go , it will be what it will be , it wasn’t a bad decision at all , any NFL qb should make thatthrow 99 out of a 100 but he air mailed it !!! You going to tell a mlb pitcher to not throw to first on a bunt or dribbler ( Hell no) but every day in mlb there is a crazy throw and many by a pitcher . This just wasn’t an il advised throw it was terrible technique but no worse than half of all the interceptions last Sun ………… Arians and Lefty lost the game , plain and simple !!! Hey Morons let Winston lose the game or maybe win the game , don’t coddle him as it serves no purpose AT ALL !!! From the first 6 drives , chances are he would win it but for Christ sakes protect the qb !!!

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @St. Pete

It really seems to me that Winston hasn’t improved….I’ve been a supporter (as I am for every Buc as long as they are Bucs)……so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

I actually think Jameis may trust himself too much and that has been the problem….Same as Vinny T. trusted his strong arm.

I have recently seen restraint from Jameis when receivers were covered……should have tucked and run but took the sacks.

This is very sad to see….the desegregation of a very talented player.

I am in the camp that BA is not tied to Winston and has an understanding with Licht & the Glazers that if Winston can’t be fixed, BA will select & groom the next Buc QB.

The Glazers are all-in with BA…..at least for the next 2 years.

  62. SmoothBayRider Says:

@Bnice , I think you are confusing QBR with QB rating . They are different. Winston’s QBR is 38.3

  63. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    denigration, not desegregation….

  64. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    disintegration…..damn spell check…

  65. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @AE

Certainly take your point…JW nor any other QB in the league absorb the punishment of past years…but I gotta confess…It still hurts when a 6-5 270 lb guy hits you…even legally.

    @TBBF

Never thought of it that way but perhaps that’s the issue. It did seem that way in his first three seasons…too much confidence.

After the AZ adventure and subsequent suspension…and then the total embarrassment of getting benched and that Cincy game JW seemed humiliated and the last six games I thought he played within himself.

This year I do not know what I’m seeing from JW except the characteristic inconsistency and occasional inexplicable throw…int or just a bad pass.

I agree with your most important point however. The biggest slam against JW IMHO is that he hasn’t really improved. He was just as good in year one as year five.

  66. Tampabaybucfan Says:

For me, the lack of improvement from year 1 to year 5 doesn’t bode well for a contract extension for huge bucks….

I know if I had an employee come to me for a big raise……I would expect some sort of sign of worthiness…..

  67. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

“Fans” say Jamies can’t throw. He can’t read defenses. Well guess who’s going to under center on Sunday. Yes Jamies F-ing Winston! So get in the fetal position right now.

  68. BucsBandit Says:

    ONEILBUCS,

The answer to that question you keep posting over and over about is simple…

If Winston plays really well this season, yet we still lose a lot of games, then he WILL be resigned. It’s just that simple. Just like if a RB rushed for 1,200+ yards on a losing team OR someone like Shaq Barrett racking up 10+ season in the season (even if we only win 4 games) he’s going to get a big contract.

Now that we have that out of the way…

The challenge lies in determining if Winston played well or not. He was TERRIBLE against the 49ers. He was mediocre against the Panthers (thanks to our Defense for getting us the win) and he was INCONSISTENT against the Giants – solid first half but terrible second half to not put the Giants away. Yes, he had a great drive at the end to put us in short FG range. But… a QBs final drive of the game doesn’t excuse the mistakes and bad play of the game.

As of right now, in my opinion, I would rate Winston’s 2019 play so far as a D+ or a C- at the most.

That play is NOT good enough to resign someone for $30M+/year.

  69. Anonymous Says:

Winston is a solid C. Just like in the past. He won’t be back. Thank God.

Now we know Jamies never had a running game like that and he still played good and you still trying to blame him for something. The problem is this fan base just want a white quarterback and yall just can’t say it on here. So what happened to Wentz the first half and the second half???
