Not Getting To The Quarterback

September 17th, 2019

Leading no-hit parade

There are many reasons to celebrate the 2019 Bucs defense, but drilling quarterbacks isn’t one of them.

The Bucs have seven official quarterback hits this season. Five belong to linebacker Shaq Barrett and the team average of 3.5 per game is down from 5.8 per game last year. Vita Vea and Kevin Minter each have one QB hit.

Two games is a tiny sample size, but the totals are not what the Bucs expected from a defense blitzing like madmen, and from the presences of Ndamukong Suh, Carl Nassib ad Veah. Suh had 19 quarterback hits last season plus 5 in the playoffs. Nassib had 14 in 15 games.

When you hit the quarterback, sack or not, it often gets in his head. There’s a cumulative effect of the hits, one that hopefully affects a quarterback’s decision-making and leads to incompletions or turnovers.

For those wondering, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, has absorbed 15 hits as a passer this season.

This defense is built to stop the run first on the way to the QB. You probably aren’t going to be at the top in sacks and QB hits. You have to pick your poison. Get strictly pass rushers or the kind of guys like Suh, Vea and Gholston. I don’t see a problem if the secondary holds up where if the pass is completed they make the tackle right there. Guys running freely through the secondary is what we have seen the last few years.

SAY IT LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER FOR THE MORONS IN THE BACK

  3. DB55 Says:

Bowles blitzes have been stuffed at every turn. No bueno. At least we’re not getting burnt on the backside unless of course they throw to the gayduh

  4. Pittsshore Says:

Hey Joe. The middle of the line actually got a pretty good push into Cams face last Thursday

  5. Steven007 Says:

Dapostman, preach. At this point is anyone really upset that we haven’t hit the QB as much as we did under Mike Smith’s defense? I think we’ll all take what we’ve seen so far over some additional irrelevant hits. The hits certainly didn’t seem to get into any quarterbacks heads last year…

  6. Cannon Says:

We may not be getting as many hits… but we sure do look good on 3rd and short and 4th and short.

  7. Rayjay1122 Says:

It will,be interesting to see if they get better pass rush with Minter #51 at MLB. He is a veteran and may put the defense in better position than White was.

  8. firethecannons Says:

Up against the Giants, I’d be thinking there is much more opportunity to stop the run, unless we get a rook we can manipulate with the secondary.

  9. Jean Lafitte Says:

With the way the rules are about hitting QB’s all the numbers across the NFL as a whole are all historically down. Guys are pulling up. If you don’t then you more times than not get penalized. Ask Miles Garrett?

  10. Slugglife Says:

Kong doesnt have to hit the QB to be in his head.

As long as them boys in the front do thsir job, stats dont matter. Ws matter.

    DB55, why so salty dog?

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’ll take our current Defense…..thank you…

If you like projecting numbers, how about this one:

At the current rate the Bucs will allow only 8 touchdowns this year…..

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

8 TDs by the defense…….16 by the offense….

  13. DB55 Says:

I have a problem with stupid people. I’m also gluten for punishment so jbf is a match made in heaven.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … That’s cruel. True, but cruel.

    DB55

how many TD’s has the VHG given up this season?……

i thought getting burnt means you’re giving up TD’s every game but wtfdik….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. Easy Says:

We have a top 10 defense right now and ill take it over QB hits.

  17. doctor_berto Says:

813, Hargreaves looks terrible in coverage again this season. Idk what you’re watching but he’s beat regularly.

  18. K2 Says:

Defense looks good…but I guess with could fire everyone and start over.

  19. Slugglife Says:

Every cornerback gets beaten. Theure covering the best receivers on the planet.

Its can you make the play when it counts. Look for the corners to feast this weekend.

Well DB, I hope you feel like youre making headway educating all of us morons and idiots.

Thanks for your hard work and unparalleled knowledge.

  22. Red86 Says:

Love this defense so far. Much better all around without you know who.

  23. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Gerald McCoy is old, fat and he sucks now Joe, get over it already. I’ll take one touchdown a game all day.

  24. Rob Says:

Jameis has been hit 15 times for several reasons. The main one is he holds the ball too long and has been too indecisive at times. Our o line is not great but he needs to get rid of the ball quicker. Go Bucs!

  25. unbelievable Says:

    @Rob-

you kind of need your receivers to get open in order to get the ball out quickly.

I find it laughable that so many “knowledgable” fans on this site never seem to bring up the lack of separation by our receivers this year.

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

unbelievable- It’s noticeable too. Are we not running enough rub routes or are teams strictly playing the pass and daring us to run?
Couple that, of course, with the obligatory drops from Perriman and it doesn’t look good. The offense looks really forced right now, at least passing-wise.

  27. D-Rome Says:

Stats only tell part of the story which is what frustrated me about the slack jawed mouth breathers when it came to Gerald McCoy. Gerald McCoy was a force for many years and he had a great career here.

Vita Vea may have zero sacks and only one QB hit but he has been a force out there. Yet, give it time and the same idiot mouth breathers are going to say that Vea sucks.

  28. BigHog Says:

It’s long season, I’m sure KONG SUEY will get a few hits along the way…but if his job is to stop the run first, then do your job and let the hits come where they may!!
GO BUCS GO SUHY GO MINTER BALL IF YOU CAN BALL VH3!!!

  29. DB55 Says:

    Slug

Took me 5 years to tach you morons that McIceCream was an overpaid overhyped bum so it’s a loooooooong process cuz ya sloooooooooooow af but wtfdik

  30. ElBajito43 Says:

This is why fans are pissed off and triggered by GM Jason Lichtenstein My Balls.
Sitting in position to draft a blu-chip Defensive Lineman or Edge, and a LB was selected.

  31. JimmyJack Says:

So if I read the stat right Shaq has 5 hits VitaV and Minter each have one and the rest of the team has zero?

The first guy I’m looking at is our Captain Carl Nassib. I have not seen this guy do anything in passrush this year so far. Maybe I missed something but if I did it would wasnt much. Dude needs to step up and do it quick because Nelson flashed last week and has probably earned more snaps. He might just take Nassibs job if things don’t get better. Hey and don’t sleep on Bind either.

And I guess Levontes hit doesn’t count because it was a run. But Nelson cleaned up the play with a forced fumble so I think I’ll take that!!

  32. JimmyJack Says:

    Bond**

  33. Afish Says:

Im not sure but Jimmy G got the ball out of his hand super fast week 1 and we still put some pressure on him and I thought we put a bunch of pressure on Cam.

Getting pressure on the QB is more important then hitting the qb after he already threw it in today’s football. The risk of a stupid roughing the passer is so insanely high right now they dont need to risk hitting the qb AFTER he has already thrown it.

now i bet if you look at the qb pressures we are just fine. the pressure up the middle is really good with VITA and SUH too

  34. christopher Says:

Hey Joe, it’s 2019. Hitting the QB sans sack often gets a penalty nowadays. Let Bowles & co. run & coach this, it seems to be working 😉

  35. unbelievable Says:

@fanman – I’ve been wondering the same thing.

Maybe this offense is just that much more complex and they are all still learning, but the lack of separation has been concerning when you’ve got guys like Evans, Godwin and OJ, plus a speedy guy like Perriman. I’m convinced Evans was still sick last Thursday… Godwin has been playing clutch but the rest need to step up.

Is it coaching? Seems we have way too many coaches for that to be possible.

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    berto

if looking terrible and getting beat regularly means:

    -getting a pick6
-keeping everything in front of you and making the tackle
    -making the game winning play
-not giving up a TD in 2games

    then i’ll take it….lol…

obviously, folks like yourself dont know the difference between getting beat and keeping everything in front of you…..

if he was getting beat like a drum as some claim, why havent WR’s scored on him yet?…..why did jimmy g avoid him?….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  37. sincethebeginning Says:

Please find another Bucs website to read since this site offends you so much. –Joe

  38. JimmyJack Says:

813 anybody complaining about Hargreaves this year needs their head examined.

Week 1 he makes a game changing play.

Week 2 he he makes a game winning play.

We could actually use more of what VHIII is bringing. Don’t think some of y’all know what’s good for ya.
