Just Win, Baby
September 4th, 2019Joe doesn’t want to hear it.
Joe just wants to throw up when he hears people try to talk “culture” when it comes to football. Joe doesn’t give a s(pit) about people staring at paintings or Play-Doh sculptures or sipping tea with their pinkies sticking out before they go to the opera, or dancing in circles around a fire begging the Great Spirit to rain or snow or whatever.
This always comes to mind when Joe hears football folks talk about building a winning culture. We’ve heard this crap from every coach who has been marched into One Buc Palace since Chucky was run out of the building and the losing began.
And now we can add Bucco Bruce Arians to the list who hinted it takes three years to build a winning culture.
“I think your first three years, you have to establish a winning attitude and a winning culture,” Arians said yesterday as Joe groaned to himself. “After your third year, it can be, ‘Let’s just get to the first game healthy with everybody’ because I know what I have.
“I think teaching guys and finding ways to win – whether it’s guys that got cut or not – it still permeates through your locker room.”
Finding ways to win Joe agrees with wholeheartedly. But how about a fresh approach?
How about hiring good football people? How about not hiring guys who were mentally checked out (coughMikeSmithcough). How about signing players who are not looking for just paychecks? How about drafting good football players? How about teaching them to block and tackle and catch?
Trust Joe, you get good football coaches with good players who have good fundamentals, and are placed in the right position, you will be shocked how well a team does.
Culture? Pppffftt! Bucs fans have been hearing about culture all the while the losses mount year after year after agonizing year. Culture this.
As Al Davis famously said, “Just win, baby!”
September 4th, 2019 at 12:02 pm
Culture? Do they mean the MRSA cultures they scraped off of the training table? If so, yes we need new ones.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:15 pm
Joe, you are mistaken on “culture”. You have no idea how someone like McCoy who looks great on the outside but behind closed doors is a cancer who freely accepted losing. Once he’s gone, that doesn’t just go away. It takes time.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:16 pm
“How about hiring good football people? How about not hiring guys who were mentally checked out (coughMikeSmithcough). How about signing players who are not looking for just paychecks? How about drafting good football players? How about teaching them to block and tackle and catch”
All of this is the “culture” you can’t seem to figure out.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:27 pm
If every coach is mentioning it then it’s a thing
If it was only mentioned by a few Joe might have a point, but as usual joe has no point
September 4th, 2019 at 12:30 pm
MRSA cultures…..too much
September 4th, 2019 at 12:33 pm
culture improved once smitty got sent packing!!!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!
September 4th, 2019 at 12:34 pm
When the Bucs win, all is right in the world…until the Bucs lose.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:35 pm
Joe, I think your idea of what culture is too narrow.
Everything you mentioned about football guys, paycheck guys, and mentally checked out guys IS part of the culture. Specifically it’s the part of the culture that needs bleached like the MRSA
September 4th, 2019 at 12:38 pm
The culture does need to change as do the results. We are so bad and viewed so lowly nationally that we could start the season 4-0 and the talj each week will be how bad our opponents played rather than the Bucs playing that good. Thats what a decade of sucking does.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:38 pm
A Great Offensive Line will help build Culture !!!
Licht you have Failed and You need to be held accountable, I sure hope I am wrong !!! There should be two pro bowlers on this line anything else is a failure after five years with the # 1 pick ……….. this business 101 but Licht wants to make it hard and keep guys like Jensen, Dotson, J Evans, Brate,David , Gholston ( very least resign for 3.5 mil) and the o line depth is terrible at best but there Are 2 nd round safety’s on the bench !!! 7 million dollar lb that can’t get past a minor knee surgery that Minter can step right in for ……… Just Remember…… I Told You So !!!
OK I Think I have covered it enough 🤫
The O line can be upgraded without affecting the winning talent on this team , GM s Just can’t put the team in front of themselves ( their guys ) .
September 4th, 2019 at 12:39 pm
Culture starts at the top. Bad owners, zero commitment to winning, staying in the shadows counting their money and looking at revenue spreadsheets. That’s the Glazers culture.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:41 pm
I believe in the change of culture talk coming from this coach.
So many times i’ve seen players checkout when times got tuff.
That ish bother me more than losing the game. We need to set a physical/ fundamental tone. Let the chips fall where they may, but let theses fools feel
What type of game they just played.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:41 pm
Joe is right!
Just win baby!
September 4th, 2019 at 12:43 pm
the coaches and player understand they don’t have to win in Tampa. they just have to go through the motions. there is ZERO expectations nor pressure to win when you are a bucs coach or player. the only good thing the glazers have done is fire dungy the clown and train low standard bucfan to make excuses and accept losing.
September 4th, 2019 at 12:44 pm
Culture is vital in everything we do!! Rather have the winning culture than a losing culture
September 4th, 2019 at 12:47 pm
Hard to take the “just win baby” motto seriously when, those that gave the GM a huge pass just so that he can hire a coach to fix the game manager qb and not to evaluate or question starting the game manager qb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4 day away from the buc’s rocketing up the mock draft boards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the ‘real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 4th, 2019 at 12:52 pm
Hard to believe the current “runner” (2008-present) is starting to rival the lean times of the the early/mid 80’s -mid 90’s in terms of it’s awfulness. I never thought history would repeat itself. Can this organization overcome a decade of Lichtness? I sure hope so but am dubious.
September 4th, 2019 at 1:02 pm
LOL…John McKay when asked how long it work take he replied ” 5 years…”I have a 5 year contract”….his exact quote is better than my paraphrase
September 4th, 2019 at 1:06 pm
Include being a mess with the salary cap making it next to impissible to turn the roster around. We are too Licht in the pockets!
September 4th, 2019 at 1:07 pm
Awesome article and I couldn’t agree more.
September 4th, 2019 at 1:22 pm
Another crap write up by the one and only Joe clunker dot. Yawn. This is the den of depression Joe. Ira a KC fan dose not care about the Bucs and niether do the Joes. Your just a writer who couldnt hack it in a real market. Your only realivent because you have a place for fans and TROLLS to grieve. Go ahead take down the comment section and see how relavent you are. Wake up Joes its not your articles that keep fans coming back. Its comment sections.
September 4th, 2019 at 1:24 pm
This team will be awful. 5-11, assuming they can find a way not to lose this Sunday.
September 4th, 2019 at 1:26 pm
Considering the majority of the bucs starters would qualify for janitorial work with most nfl franchises maybe instead of Just Win Baby the bucs motto should have something to with urinals, commodes and those cake thingys bonzi still eats on game days
Instead of the combine bucs should just pick the guy who changes the urinal cakes the fastest… very similar to shuttle run other teams use….
September 4th, 2019 at 1:28 pm
How about getting off Arians ass! Stop manufacturing unnecessarily negative crap!!!
September 4th, 2019 at 1:35 pm
Some on this sight appear to actually like losing…..it allows them to continue their sorry-a$$ diatribe…..whining about players….and then when they are jettisoned…..whine about something else….yes, they enjoy losing!!!
September 4th, 2019 at 1:35 pm
BA’s BS is going to catch up to him then he will just play the health card AGAIN and bail….. BA is the Joe Biden of the NFL…..
September 4th, 2019 at 1:40 pm
Here we go guys. Another year of..? I have my liquor cabinet stocked to..Dull the pain and get..Comfortably Numb when my Bucs Lose. Good luck to us. We got the biggest coaching staff in the NFL with overall teamwise..Average Players. I’m still at 8-8. We shall see. I hope Arians health holds up while coaching this lot.
September 4th, 2019 at 1:42 pm
joe, what type of culture do you think you’ve created here?
Just read the comments above, then chime in.
September 4th, 2019 at 1:45 pm

remember when every car on the road in the Bay Area had two Buc flags flying 7 days a week…. this years rookie class were riding big wheels in their driveways
September 4th, 2019 at 2:05 pm
So ole BA is realizing the level of talent on this squad is not going to cut it this year….it may be the first honest statement he has made since he has been hired
September 4th, 2019 at 2:08 pm
This is not fantasy football. You don’t just remake the entire team. It took McKay 4 years. It took Dungy 3 years. Gruden changed the roster by 20% in year 1. That is a lot.
Maybe Arians will be different and win immediately with some of the bad players left behind. The present culture started changing when McCoy was shown the door and Suh was signed. When nice but ineffective guys are moved out, the others realize there are no sacred cows.
September 4th, 2019 at 2:11 pm

So what you’re saying is false hope and delusional optimism is better than actually living in reality
September 4th, 2019 at 2:13 pm
Oh my God Joe I could not possibly agree with you more! My only question is why do you show this pearl of wisdom on one hand and then every time someone mentions the secondary you show a picture of Hargraves and throw him under the bus? I love your point in this article but wish you were more consistent with it when talking about any other player besides Winston.
September 4th, 2019 at 2:16 pm
ModHairKen
Stop with failed past references it’s sad and pathetic
McKay and dungy did not build anything nor did they win anything. Why rewrite history???whyce built dungy the clown defense and the clown and McKay failed to build a offense. Dungy coached a bad team with a highly ranked defense handed to him…. they failed get over it….
September 4th, 2019 at 2:17 pm
Jameis Winston is named a Team Captain. When he wasn’t, the haters jumped on it. Now that he is again, how will they react?
September 4th, 2019 at 2:17 pm
Dare is a team captain as well. I found that very interesting!
September 4th, 2019 at 2:18 pm
I highly doubt Bill belichick could take this roster to the playoff his 1st season… Maybe not ever with the cricial pieces that are missing!
September 4th, 2019 at 2:19 pm
calm down bonsai! As the quarterback of a team you should be the team captain. The reason he wasn’t last year is because he was suspended three games for being inappropriate with an Uber driver. It’s OK to criticize somebody for being stupid and therefore unavailable to your team. Hopefully that’s all behind him now.
September 4th, 2019 at 2:24 pm
Joe doesn’t give a s(pit) about people staring at paintings or Play-Doh sculptures or sipping tea with their pinkies sticking out before they go to the opera, or dancing in circles around a fire begging the Great Spirit to rain or snow or whatever.
Is that what they do at Eastern Illinois?
September 4th, 2019 at 2:26 pm
Winning culture is NOT when the owners are held hostage by the new coach to extend the sorry ass GM. That’s just covering for the good ole boy mentality. Until we get new owners personally committed to this franchise, nothing will change. BA will probably bail after this year and more of the same will continue. Licht has destroyed the roster year after year and overpaid for underperforming has beens.
September 4th, 2019 at 2:38 pm
It’s weird that pewterreport has week 1 @ home vs the 49ers as our easiest win.
Not sure how the Giants with Eli Manning and no WRs and a gutted defense are better than a 49ers team with a healthy Jimmy G/Kittle/solid run game + upgraded defense….
I’d actually say the Cardinals / Titans / Giants / 49ers are our 4 easiest must-win type games with 49ers being the toughest out. Hopefully our new look defense will give us a week 1 advantage but 49ers kind of have the same thing.
Also lmao at this line from a betting preview site “but some might argue that Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and O.J. Howard are right up there with San Francisco’s top receivers.”
Um i think everyone and their mom would argue that. No one even knows who 49ers #1 is.

tmaxcon Says
“McKay and dungy did not build anything nor did they win anything. Why rewrite history???whyce built dungy the clown defense…”
Can always spot a troll because their facts are completely messed up.
Sam Wyche had 3 good picks out of 37 picks he made. Those 2 were Lynch, Sapp and Brooks.
McKay had 64 picks total, and he Mike Alstott, Donnie Abraham, Warrick Dunn, Frank Middleton, Ronde Barber, Martin Gramatica, Brian Kelly, and Dexter Jackson (the good one), not to mention he brought in some great free agents like Simeon Rice. Notice how there are a lot of top defensive plays in those picks?
And as far as the Bucs winning under Dungy, they made multiple playoff appearances, won the NFC Central Division Championship, and would have gone to the superbowl if not for a PROVEN bad call by the refs when they played the Eagles in the NFC Championship game. Dungy turned this team into a winning team after 2 decades of losing.
So although I know you will not stop making up your lies, at least the rest of us can know the truth.
September 4th, 2019 at 2:41 pm
Greg, the haters also wanted Fitz to be the full time QB last year. How will they react when he gets his full time shot with the fins and blows it?
September 4th, 2019 at 2:45 pm
That is shocking to me especially when you consider he has a total of 7 kickoff returns and 137 yards for his career.
September 4th, 2019 at 3:02 pm
Buccaneer Bonzai
2 playoff wins in 6 years is laughable not legendary…. everything else you typed is irrelevant based on post season failures… dungy the clown and mckay are popular failures nothing more….
September 4th, 2019 at 3:49 pm
No one has the kick balls to say it, so gosh darn it I will! Dungy should have won G! Screw Gruden! Raheem team soft as ice cream! Shiano was an a$$ hole! Dirk Koetter was a sucker! Smith was a whimp! There better be blood in the water this year. We better fire the cannons or fire Bruce Arians! I know for some of you Bucs fans he’s the man! But for me he possibly could be the next man up on the Tampa Bay hype machine! Who’s the cat in the flat red hat, who promises to bring a championship back? Bruce! You nincompoops. When he was hired you screamed like someone was hurting you. But I came to sober you up. This regime is destined for runner up. He’ll be just like guy that used to coach the jets. He’ll write a whole lot checks that his a$$ can’t cash. No risk it, no biscuit.
September 4th, 2019 at 3:50 pm
Bonzi
the only pick that mattered was sapp he carried the rest of those backups you listed…..
basically you are the poster child fan for my complaints. being great means more than one year…. dungy’s teams were pretenders that never contended they were a mentally weak team with a highly ranked defense that could lose 10 to 7 any team any given week…. you have lowered the standards so low to put that hypocrite bum on a pedestal it’s truly sad…. again dungy the clown wasted 6 years of sapps career enough said. sapp and selmon are the only great players this minor league franchise has ever had and they accomplished very little with both of them. Culverhouse was a saint compared to the glazers

what are you taling about D- ROME 137 yards makes the ring of underachievement with the rest of the backups already there…. remember bucs greats are graded on a scale so they can qualify as greats Dare is a great already by buc standards.
September 4th, 2019 at 3:52 pm
It’s all important; coaching, culture, etc…
Just as important is talent. We’ve grown far too accustomed to buzz-words like “potential” here in Tampa Bay.
September 4th, 2019 at 3:57 pm
Just win baby an stfu until you do.
September 4th, 2019 at 3:58 pm
Jason Licht is potentially the worst GMbin the NFL.
September 4th, 2019 at 7:22 pm
BigMac, every GM is potentially the worst if their HC has no idea how to use the players they bring in, or if their HC shoehorns them into a system that doesn’t play to their strengths, or if their HC can’t make in game adjustments, or if their HC’s play calling is perfectly predictable, or…
Yes, he has swung and missed a few times, but there so many more issues on this team. I’m very anxious to see what we look like on Sunday.
September 5th, 2019 at 3:32 am
AMEN JOE!!
ALL THE SAME SPRING LOADED CATCH PHRASES FLYING OUTTA ONE BUC FOR THE PAST DECADE PLUS…..JUST PLAY BETTER…SCORE MORE THAN YOU GIVE UP …AND BRING RESPECTABILITY BACK TO PLAYING FOR AND PULING FOR THIS BUCCANEERS FRANCHISE … FIRST STEP IS SUNDAY 4PM
September 5th, 2019 at 6:29 am
Hey PelBuc, “overpaid for underperforming has beens.” Were you a Bucs fan during the Gruden years? He never met a vet(old) player he didn’t think he could get another season out of. Yes some were successful, most were not after his first season. Charlie Garner rings a bell Tim Brown is another. He had signed up plenty of “overpaid for underperforming has beens.”.
Just Win Baby!! It is all that matters. No one cares that you put up 4000+ yards a season if it is a losing season.
September 6th, 2019 at 3:41 am
Tmax how many playoff appearances for did Wyche lead the team to
