Jameis Accuracy Scrutinized

September 24th, 2019

Former Buccaneers tight end Anthony Becht has studied the Bucs-Giants game and sees an area of the Tampa Bay offense that could use improvement.

It might surprise you — and it might not.

Becht acknowledged that Jameis had a “big game” with “big numbers,” he added that it could have been bigger with more accuracy.

It was clear to Joe that Becht was referencing Jameis throwing a little short to Mike Evans on the huge play to set up Matt Gay’s choke-job field goal attempt. Evans had Giants cornerback beaten by a couple of yards on the outside but had to shade back in and adjust back to the ball a bit to make the catch.

“You know, the one thing I will say, and you can call this nitpicking, you can say, you know, ‘Ahhh, they still got the yards,’ But clearly if O.J. Howard and Mike Evans get a ball that’s thrown out and above that they can run under they have scores and touchdowns instead of trying to make tremendous catches, stopping a little bit and catching footballs,” Becht told WDAE-AM 620.

“It’s been a big deal. Now, will we take a completion all day, the big play? Absolutely. But on the high side you’ve got opportunities there where your receiver clearly had an extreme advantage. I mean, Mike Evans was blowing by guys all day, and the fact that Mike Evans has to slow down on some things is the reason for an opportunity that was left on the field.”

Becht is on the money. Yes, it’s definitely nitpicking (Becht’s word) when a QB makes a monster play like that with less than a minute left in a game. However, Jameis was under no pass rush and his throw traveled 47 yards in the air, so he certainly had more in his arm. And if he leads Evans or throws more toward the outside, then it’s likely a touchdown.

Joe has to wonder. Perhaps Jameis underthrew Evans a little just to help Bucco Bruce Arians and Matt Gay not get too close to the end zone where field goals are more challenging?

    Old news….

I have it on good authority that Jameis underthrew Mike Evans because he wanted to see if the coaches would trust in his ability to throw a red-zone touchdown. Much to his dismay, Coach Band-Aid opted for the FG.

  3. rfdes Says:

That is as accurate as your going to get from the guy. 99% of the time, it’s 5 yards over their heads on those long throws.

  4. knucknbuc Says:

exactly what ive been saying for years. jameis hits no wideouts in stride they all are either behind orto far in front the havd to come back to catch it or dive to get it. and joe wants to pay him 30 mill a year. its year 5 jameis is who he is. which right now is jay cutler. PASS

  5. Tim Says:

Under thrown or throws behind are the biggest reason big 13 does not have better YAC stats.
It is hard to catch a pass and make extra yards, when you have to slow down and run into the defender just to make the catch.

JW had a great 1st half, the 2nd half was not so good.

  6. Kgh4life Says:

Jameis is not an accurate thrower of the football, either they’re high or behind his receivers. Which is why the Bucs should be looking at QBs in the 2020 draft.

  7. Pittsshore Says:

Well duh. Helen Keller could have thrown for 300 yards against the leagues worst ranked D. How about that throw that was picked? It looked like he was throwing a lawn dart. He is up against a real defense this weekend and the real JW will come out again.

  8. Tye Says:

I watch Patrick Mahomes, Carson Wentz, Jarod Goff, Josh Allen, Jacoby Brissett, guys who have been drafted since J and constantly wonder why can’t the Bucs have a qb that entertaining and not frustrating…
Now Gardner Minchew is on the rise and even Daniel Jones was impressive just playing in his first game..

Even some college guys seem to rarely miss their receivers YET you constantly hear during a bucs game.. ‘ANOTHER overthrow/underthrow by Winston’…

  9. PUGS&BUCS Says:

Gee… awfully sorry he couldn’t make a perfect throw in a high pressure situation with one time out after already taking 5 sacks.

  10. Bruce Blahak Says:

Yeah..this has been ongoing for some time. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. A QB that throws within the area….sucks! He can’t hit anyone in stride. Are you all blind? His completions are fast ball strikes or 50/50 jump balls. 5 years…ITS OVER!!!

  11. El Buco Realisto Says:

The cold hard facts are that all these weapons have made the inaccurate game manager qb look better than he really is!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a reason that the Bucs are always at the bottom for yac!!!!!!!!!!! There is a reason why we see these long, plodding drives!!!!!!!!!!! There have been just about no plays for years for easy touchdowns!!!!!!!! So many routes and plays cut short because of off target throws!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If only the o-line protected the qb like the local media does, then there would never be a sack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would it not just be easier to draft a new qb???????????? Why pay elite prices when what the Bucs will get is not elite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. bucs4ya Says:

I think if Jameis puts more air on the deep ball players can run under it and make adjustments. That was the biggest difference I saw last year when Fitz would throw deep vs Jameis throwing deep. Fitz would let it go sooner with more air and Jameis slings it more on a rope.

  14. Lamarcus Says:

Man F this. Only accuracy that needs to be questioned is the kickers accurate.

    Blame Jameis

  15. zzbuc Says:

I am far from being convinced JW is the future, we will have to wait till the end of the season, but last two games were pretty solid. Of course the first game was a complete mess….. Same as last year, he didn’t start for the suspension, then he started and was a nightmare, the benched and finish better.
That’s what JW is all about, sometimes great sometimes disgusting, maybe that will never change, and we have to move on, Draft one or maybe some trade, for sure there will be QB on the market……

  16. Lamarcus Says:

It was a perfect play….. Given the idea you need just a fg to win it. Kicker is lost the game

  17. Pittsshore Says:

Hey Lamarcus. What’s JWs record as a starter? We win that game if we had a real QB

  18. George Rauh Says:

It was a good throw, was it perfect, no, but it was still a good throw. He made sure he gave Mike a chance to catch the ball is he over throws the ball Mike can’t catch the ball or get a penalty.

  19. Pittsshore Says:

It will most likely be the only win of the year for the giants unless they can take a game form the Skins.

  20. Dapostman Says:

@Pittsshore aka Cliff Claven, this is football not tennis or match play golf. There are zero individual win/loss records in football. To state there are shows your Cliff Claven ness. Knows everything yet knows nothing.

  21. NPRSageBoy Says:

Accuracy or lack thereof had always been a rap on JayMiss. Why is anyone surprised?

News flash for all those JayMiss fans out there…a franchise QB he ain’t.

Good night Mrs. Calabash wherever you are…

  22. Mike10 Says:

Most NFL QBs are able to lead their receiver in that instance. Mike has his guy beat by almost 5 yards, and had to come back far enough to where the catch was contested.

2 reasons you lose that game: your D gives up 19 points in the second half to a first-time starter without their #1 playmaker. Other reason: you score 3 points after putting up 28. You want to stop finding ways to lose Bucs? Close the game out when you have the chance!

  23. Greg Says:

People need to learn to look past statistics. Any quarterback can throw to Mike Evans. Winston would look absolutely terrible if Evans was not on this team. He can’t lead receivers. He can’t throw people open. Too often passes are behind the receiver or over their heads. If it wasn’t for Evans size, Winston would be the worst quarterback in the nfl. Take away all of the 50-50 balls and what statistics do you have left? It’s not pretty

  24. BigHog Says:

Anthony B@tch is such a crybaby…this game is football !!! taking what you get and moving to the next play, who’s to say if FAMOUS had zipped it in there to BIG MIKE and he dropped that pass…would we now be saying Mike got the drops again!! It’s a game of execution!! FAMOUS did his job on the last drive…everybody did but THAT GUY!!! LETS GO GUY PUT IT THROUGH THE UPRIGHTS !!! LETS GET BACK TO WINNING!!! LETS NOT LET THIS RUN STUFFING DEFENCE GO TO WASTE!! I see a win in LA!!!

  25. unbelievable Says:

I mean, he’s not wrong. Another yard further on that ball, and Evans would have been in the end zone.

But it wasn’t a bad throw by any means, and all we needed was 3 pts to win.

The accuracy of Matt Gay was the bigger problem.

  26. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @bighog

You better listen to some Jay-Z and calm down!!!!!!!!!! That play, like many many others is just an example of the Bucs having to settle for less when the inaccurate game manager qb is in the game!!!!!!!!!! It was all exposed when Fitzmagic, who is not a good qb either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing worse than looking for a franchise qb, is thinking you have one when you don’t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Been saying this since before March 2015…….he will never win a Super Bowl.

  28. Hodad Says:

Jameis took sacks because he held on to the ball to long. He had good protection, and still took sacks. Jones took a bunch of sacks too, but he made plays with his arm, and his legs. Jameis moved up in the pocket, back in the pocket, sack. All day I was yelling run, Forrest run!! Jameis is not a franchise QB, how many more picks, over throws, and under throws do you need to see to figure that out? He had the eyes of a shell shocked soldier in the second half, not the eyes of a tiger. Crown his arse if you want to, but he is what I thought he was, a bad QB.

  29. Justafan Says:

When you harp on a guy about throwing interceptions, what do you think he’s going to do? He gonna throw the ball away from the defender.
We finally have proven coaches, let them do the work.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Almost all of Jameis’ deep throws are overthrown…..and by some margin……at least this ball could be caught.

  31. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “LOL

There enough stats of JW now with over 4 years in the NFL

look at JW3 4 years of 3rd down % and redzone % and

look at the 3 games this year

Tampa Bay fanbase has been hoodwinked

our 2018 5-11 Bucs team brought in

4-12 Jets and 3-13 Ari Cards coaching staff

and now we have Kangaroo poop”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  32. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

NOT blaming Winston for Gay’s inability to make a 34 yard FG…BUT….had he hit Evans in stride, we’re not having this discussion. I am not a “hater”….just a realist. Winston will never win a Super Bowl.

  33. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Duh!

  35. tmaxcon Says:

i love all the blame and deflection towards a 24 year old fine young man…. it’s pathetic… i guess it’s jameis’s fault this abortion of a franchise has onl managed 6 pathetic playoff wins in 42 years….. 3 in sapp and gurden’s glory year…. pathetic…. you fools keep worshiping 1 year wonder washed up has beens and jameis will be hosting lombardi trophies once he escapes this small market black hole that is Tampa bay buccaneers…. Tampa Bay Home of backup legends and basement titles…

  36. Mickman Says:

Lets face it there is no one to blame but the defense line for now pass-rush other than one guy giving Giants plenty of time to step up and throw. Also on the big play the D-line did not cover the hole that Giants QB ran right thru.

Top it off the D-backs missing tackles! Don’t try to blame the offense or the Kicker for losing this game which should have been an easy game to win.

  37. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

  40. Lamarcus Says:

    Pittshore

That’s was the dumbest comment I heard on this site “What’s JW record and if we had a better qb we would win”. Gtfoh No if we had a better kicker we would of won. Did you even watch the game?

  41. kyle Says:

winston is average at best! I know it is sacrilegious to question the bucs qb. Look around the league, there are only a handful of great qbs. if this season goes down the toilet, aka 3 or 4 wins, it would be a joke if we didnt draft a qb in the first round.

  42. BushidoEvans Says:

Well to be honest if that last ball hits Evans in stride there is no need for the field goal cuz that’s a td. It is a little nitpicky though.

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jameis had a very good game…..but somehow we only scored 3 points in the second half……there has to be a reason for that….

    No running game? No
    Lots of Penalties? No
    Fumbles? No
Interceptions……………1 but inconsequential (or was it ?)

Playcalling…………….yes, that was the problem and part of it was brought on by a lack of trust in Jameis Winston…..they won’t admit it but we all know the trust wasn’t there after the interception.

And, this my friends will be the problem going forward….it will take more than a few good games from Jameis to regain the trust of his coaches…..it will take near flawless games….and if he stumbles down the stretch….it’s over.

  44. Lamarcus Says:

Ppl only care about being right. So they said JW sucks and he has a good game they will twist everything he did good into bad

    winston is average at best!

if winston is average at best what’s it say about this pathetic small town franchise that he OWNS all the qb records and did it with HISTORICALLY BAD defenses and apathetic owners……

  48. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

Man I want to believe in JW3, I truly do. He’s played with some historically horrid defenses, pathetic OL protection and a turnstyle of coaching schemes….Buuuuut the fact is, in year 4 his accuracy is still garbage all around, long ball accuracy is especially dismal, he makes slow decisions and holds the ball entirely too long! He’s at his best in the hurry up when he cant let his head get engaged. It’s all between the ears. Sadly, I can name 7-10 QB’s off the top of my head that have been drafted AFTER JW3 that I would rather have right now and that is not a good sign for a #1 pick.

  49. TexBuc Says:

13 more games this season and will be plenty of time to debate this season. So far I like the direction of the team under new coaching staff.

  50. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Anyone blaming Jameis for the loss is either a troll or an idiot. most of you qualify as both.

  51. Eric Says:

Man y’all are some of the dumbest football fans on this freaking planet

  52. Jim Says:

Above all this sturm und drang is Arians, who ultimately must tell the Glazers whether he can “fix” Jameis. Stay tuned…

  53. lambchop Says:

This is why he struggled to drop a dime to DJax. DJax was short and wasn’t about to leap over defenders or dive for errant throws. DJax is an in stride WR, that’s it.

We had to get the #1 pick the one year, Mariota and Jameis were the best options.

    A Bucs Life.

  54. stpetebucsfan Says:

People have been going on about how JW lost BA’s confidence after that interception.

Is there anybody here who didn’t have their confidence rattled.

Can somebody explain that int to me? I agree with Hodad and others who point out that JW does NOT know how to throw the ball away. He takes FOREVER to get the ball out. But I fear it might be worse.

I now question not only JW’s judgment but his vision of the field. I see receivers wide open…I also see some that are blanketed…JW doesn’t seem to see anything.

AGAIN…can ANYBODY explain that int to me. It was such a horrid throw that I expected to see it tipped on the replay. He just threw that ball to ?????? His arm wasn’t hit..he wasn’t sacked…he just made the kind of throw he made so frequently in that Bengal game.

Do not mistake my post. JW did not lose that game but he also did not win it and a franchise QB would have finished that game without a totally inexplicable int at a critical juncture. JW was saved by Shaq Barrett’s forced fumble a couple of plays later.

This game has totally destroyed my confidence going forward.
JW is not as bad as some suggest…but he’s not nearly as good as others suggest.

JW is JW and BA is NOT the guy who coined “no risk it no biscuit”.

Thomas Bassenger is becoming one of my favorite sportswriters.
He made a great point. We didn’t lose that game on the missed FG…we lost it on the FG we made!!!!

Six minutes left…Bucs at the Giants five 4 and 2…a first down would have more than likely led to the game sealing TD.
Bassenger pointed out how many other coaches went for it on 4th and short yesterday….but not BA….no risk it no biscuit.
That FG gave the Giants hope…not us!

And so we have to head to Mickey D’s to get a biscuit now.

  55. DisgustedBucFan Says:

I’m usually on my phone when reading this nonsense each and every week so I don’t get to comment. Here it goes, Bucs fans might be the most miserable sacks of monkey spit I have ever had the displeasure of being around. I literally cannot think of a group of people that I despise more, White nationalists maybe even though for a lot of you it seems like you would be in the middle of that Vinn Diagram. Uninformed, fairweather jock smellers AT BEST, egregiously racist and borderline psychotic trolls at worst. You people bring way more embarrassment and shame to yourselves and TampaBay then 10 straight 0-16 seasons EVER COULD. WHY ARE YOU EVEN FANS?!?! Kindly do the real fans a favor and go away til we win a superbowl and then you can tell people that you are “bucs fans” again I suppose. I could just see you people trying your hardest not to type the N word in all your comments last year during “fitzmagic” when talking about Jameis. Innocent until proven guilty right? Not if you’re a black guy that plays for the bucs. This guy has been on teams with some of the worst defenses in NFL HISTORY, with NO RUNNING GAME, and FAR BELOW AVERAGE OFFENSIVE LINES, and a ROLLERCOASTER COACHING CAROUSEL but yall expect winning seasons? Name the qb from that draft that you would rather have….I’ll wait. You guys all talk about how terrible the coaching has been but the 22-26 year old qb is supposed to overcome ALLLLL THAT?!?! I find myself wanting him to go somewhere else to be successful just to stick it to some of you but then I realize that that is playing right into trolls like yall’s hands. I hope he stays here, brings championships, and you people have to sit there and be sick to your stomachs every fall and winter Sunday for years to come. I wish all of you people who fit this bill a very unhappy holiday season. For the real fans…GO BUCS!!!! 10-6 is very feasible!!!!! All I want for Christmas is a Top 10 kicker!!!

  56. Ndog Says:

I just give up people are just freaking clueless and apparently so is Becht, but honestly that is not surprising.

  57. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hey Knuck, go back and watch the game again! He hits no recievers in stride??? Becht was referencing one play in particular. Jameis was throwing dimes to Evans for most of the day.

  58. Ndog Says:

So everyone says he can’t hit a deep ball now he hits four in one flipping game and in which none were where the receiver had to make a great catch yet it wasn’t good enough. Wow just wow, this article and the comments just flat prove what I have been saying, which is no matter what he does people will still not want here.

  59. BucsBandit Says:

    NDog,

At what point do you start actually thinking that maybe YOU are the one that’s clueless when so many others agree in their analysis of Winston that he’s just not that great?

  60. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jameis had a super first half, but he kind of went dormant at times during the second half. A running play takes 30 or 40 seconds off the clock. An incomplete can take as little 2 or 3 seconds. All Jameis had to do is execute and complete short passes at this point in the game was to complement the running game to keep the ball out of the Giants hands.
Not counting the pic, there were at least two passes that missed their intended target badly. Since he also had times here he had happy feet and a bit uncertain
when he tried to leave the pocket. My conclusion is that Giants made adjustments to their defense that frustrated Jameis for much of the second half.
You can’t really blame the coaches for his play in parts of the second half. That is on Jameis. WE can hope that they get him more prepared for the next time .
IMO ,there will be more of the same strategies since both Niners and Giants figured out a way to put pressure on Jameis and rattle him at times.

  61. BucDan Says:

The INT thrown was the definition of why we don’t run more crossing routes with our speedsters.

I like Winston, but watching those actually dimes being thrown by Daniel Jones (and others listed above in a previous comment) just hurts my Football Execution Feelings.

  62. ElBajito43 Says:

Bucs should have been looking at QBs for awhile now… LICHT my balls sucks

  63. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

And all of the above just proves once again, that Winston is the most polarizing player in Buccaneer history.

  64. Bird Says:

    Ndog

You are right . Becht is former buc and actually just watches mainly Bucs games and calls Bucs games. Played football his whole life. And is a Jameis supporter

    But he is clueless.

Teach him. You know everything football and everything Jameis (clothes off or on ). You played quarterback in jr high school too so no one knows more then you.

  65. bucsfan561 Says:

Jameis did his thing.. typical bucs fan or former player that will find something to complain about, he played a great game to me.. and lets be real the defense lost us that game. If 28 don’t tighten up I think 29 will be better off in the starting lineup.. Davis I’m just expecting to get at least one flag per game and as far as the safeties go I don’t understand why they play so far back on 3rd and 5… like hello he’s wide tf open

  66. bucsfan561 Says:

And for any real football fan lets be real that play calling after the half was the reason that we lost as well.. ain no damn way mike evans just stopped getting open.. its like as soon as we went down by one we started to go vertical again. leftwich please get it together. PLEASE!!!

  67. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Disgusted

You are waaaay off base with bringing more charges of racism.

I am not blind. During the debate before the draft I certainly read racist comments about JW. I certainly acknowledge the obvious…that we have a lot of racists in our society.

But what your post did was far more racist than anything that’s been said about JW in this thread or any recent threads.

And so if we are to believe you this means if we criticize a black player for poor play we are racists? That itself seems racist to me. You can’t see a white person who is not racist? A person who honestly believes that JW’s record is what it is…not very good. We can debate the reasons…poor D…no running game…bad coaching…or a QB who makes horrible decisions and is a turnover machine.

I would have to take ten more posts to document all the screwups JW has brought to this franchise. If I say Ryan Leaf was worse and he was white does that make it better?

As I’ve said I have seen obvious racism directed at JW when he was being considered during the draft.

But if you can’t see people upset with a player who has failed at the level of JW…on and OFF the field…then perhaps when you holler racist you need to look in the mirror.

  68. RustyRhinos Says:

Yes, Jamise had only one INT caught. A pass to Permian was a INT too, but Permian became a DB and knocked the behind his body pass that was right into the DBs hands out. That was a great play by Permian, not a great pass at all.

  69. RustyRhinos Says:

    Well put StPeteBucsFan!

  70. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey, Jamise. If your career is over here at seasons end. Will you please take TMAXCON with you. He needs a new team to “cheer” for and he will watch you lift the Lombardi trophy multiple times, when your time with us is done. So if you want to find the team that this will happen with please feel free to speak with TMAXCON. He could be your next agent. He has great incite into multiple different players and is a expert in any type of game plan any team would attempt to make use of. It never will be good enough for TMAXCON, nothing ever is. Good luck with him.

  71. DisgustedBucFan Says:

Wrong. Criticize his play all you want, but his mistakes on the field are unfairly put all on him when he is actually constantly put in a position of having to be superman every game. Since YEAR 1 !!! I still hear national media pundits referencing the uber situation. But Big Ben Rothlisberger never hears anything said about him anymore, I bet a lot of you would rather have him in Tampa despite his multiple rape allegations, but hey, I bet he hits his receivers in stride every time right? Superbowl rings cure all and even the worst of you would give Jameis a pass if not for the lack of Championships. My point is the fake outrage that a lot of you have about his off the field allegations would suddenly disappear if he was a white guy winning rings. I stand by that. This thread specifically is not what I’m referring too. More so the years and years of being on this site and others and reading the vitriol that gets spewed by the keyboard warriors week in and week out, even when he has a good game!!!! So when his play is good and they still spit hatred where would you think that hatred comes from?? That is where race plays a factor. I lived in Tampa/Orlando my entire life and had season tickets for more than half of it. I know the kind of people I see at games and I have a pretty decent finger on the pulse of this entire fanbase. My metabolism is phenomenal so I sh!t about 8 times a day. I’m reading everything BUccaneer during these bathroom times so I see what people say day after day and it’s honestly ridiculous. With fans like most of these people, who needs detractors? Hey Jameis, the media hates you, opposing fans hate you, your own team’s fans hate you, by the way, can you go throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns and do it all by yourself every game? great thanks, we the fans will just be here talking sh!t the whole time.

  72. DisgustedBucFan Says:

And St. Pete, I am really not talking about you. I have seen people post LOGICAL things before on this site that are fair in terms of Buc/Jameis criticism. There are good, decent peopl/fans here. But someone like yourself who has been here for a while should know that I am not talking out of my a$$ when I say that buc’s fans for the most part, at least currently, are bad fans. I honestly can’t wait for the team to finally turn the corner and its been the better part of the last 2 decades that will make it that much sweeter. As upset as some of yall are, there are fans of teams that go their WHOLE LIVES without seeing a championship. Any of you in their 20’s and higher don’t have that problem.

  73. DisgustedBucFan Says:

I had a longer response but I guess I’m being moderated now.

  74. Buc68 Says:

If Jameis performs at the level he did Sunday for the rest of his career he will be in the Hall of Fame. His first touch down was incredible touch throw with blitzer up the gut putting him on the ground. Everyone continues to compare Winston to guys like Goff? Goff was awful, terrible Sunday night, and won the game. Why? His Defense, OL, RB, Kicker, are completely superior to what Winston has. In the 5 years Winston has been in Tampa if he plays like Goff did Sunday night Tampa loses by 4 tds. That’s the difference.

  75. BringBucsBack Says:

Becht is only stating the obvious.

Do you want to get nit-picky? How about ME not fall to the ground immediately upon catching that (& many others) ball. Keep your feet and fight, for heavens’ sake! He had one man to out-muscle and 10 yards with which to do it…for an WIN!…An always elusive WIN!

Mike is a monster but, he tackles himself far too often! Do you see Julio, AB, Hopkins etc., fall down prior to contact? I don’t, ever!

Nobody leaves yards and points on the field like the Manchester Bucs!

  76. DisgustedBucFan Says:

Still bringing up his off field stuff like come on. I bet you still have zeke or tyreek or kareem hunt on your fantasy football roster right? Big Adrian peterson fan right? All players who have done something that was PROVEN. Sometimes on video, but none get the same backlash from their own fanbase as Winston.

  77. Ndog Says:

Thanks Bird I appreciate the compliment. You have finally learned.

  80. Ptwalk Says:

So some of you are actually saying this lost is Winston’s fault. F_ck giving the defense an 18 point lead, and f’ck giving the kicker a chip shot fg. It’s still his fault. And because Becht played football doesn’t make him right.

  81. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Disgusted

As I pointed out and you’ve observed I’ve been here long enough to see racism around the draft decision. Other than that however it doesn’t seem that horrid to me. YMMV

As for us being bad fans…My son called from Columbus asking WTF happened to us…he saw the game. He’s a Browns fan. They would claim to be better fans perhaps…but they had a long tradition…we have one short period of success.

And our failures have totally overwhelmed our success. Yeah we have a single SB…many fans are upset that the talent then was better used giving us more SB’s…but that’s another debate.

My son doesn’t blame us. He thinks he and the other Browns fans are stupid for supporting such dross. He’s wavering already about Mayfield.

The ONLY fans I’ve seen Cubs fans. There’s a lot to do in Chicago and yet that team drew for decades while they totally sucked….they played baseball like the Bucs play football.

  82. DooshLaRue Says:

    Disgusted Buc,

Lots of clueless people out there about Jameis. Oh yeah, they are ALL wrong about him.

Pretty much every TV analyst and former NFL player thinks he stinks due to his inconsistency and bad decisions. His own coaches don’t trust him. I mean, how could you not look at all the good tidings he’s brought to his teams, even in college. What team would not jump at the chance to pay him a third of their whole team’s cap space so he can lead them to a solid 6 to 8 wins a year? With a run game and decent D, he’s turned in three real gems so far, right? I mean, just like last year. Keeping on pace with INTs and bottom tier numbers too. HoF. AHAHAHAHAAH!!!!!!!

Guess they are all just racists. Even Leftwich. hooda thunkit? LMAO.

  85. Ndog Says:

In case anybody ever decided to actually watch film they would see that everytime a team runs zone against us we are having a hard time getting open. That is in all 3 games so far and it’s a troubling trend.

  86. Bculaw Says:

Our kicker missed a 34 yard FG to win the game, but if our QB that threw for 62% completion on 380 yards and 3 touchdowns had been a bit more precise on a throw that travelled 47 yards in the air, the kicker never would have been in position to miss.

THIS is where we are as a fanbase.

THIS is the epitome of #blameJameis.

Down by 1 with 1:15 left and the QB guides the team on what should easily be a game winning scoring drive, and all the “fans” are using it as an example supporting their ” told you so” agenda.

It’s laughable. This fanbase is almost as bad as the team.

  87. Pewter power Says:

Damn bucs fans are pathetic, now Gardner Minchew is on the rise after his first nfl start lol guess Daniel Jones doesn’t have to play anymore games this year either. This is why fans get ignored by owners who leave it to the media to tell you what you should think.

  89. Oneilbucs Says:

Man this must be a Klan rally!!!!

  90. BucsBandit Says:

    @DisgustedBucFan

It’s a bit pathetic to claim fans that criticize Jameis and want him off the team are racist. Many of us have been posting about the FACTS of his poor, inconsistent play for YEARS. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin. There are certainly racists from all walks of life (and that includes some Bucs fans) but that’s not what the ANALYSIS of Winston is about when it comes to the majority of posts on this board.

And enough with this ‘real Bucs fans’ stuff. That’s another WEAK argument at best that those of us that want Winston replaced aren’t true Bucs fans. It’s the opposite… we want what’s best for the team and don’t believe he’s the answer.

So many of your points defending Winston have been DEBUNKED.

“No running game!” REALLY? Doug Martin rushed for over 1,400 yards during Winston’s first season. 1-4-0-0 YARDS. And Winston could only lead the team to 6 wins and STILL struggled with his performance.

We rushed for about 110 yards in Week 1 this season and Winston threw 3 INTs (should have been 4) that included two PICK SIXES. Man, that’s terrible. The dude leads the league in turnovers since he came into the league.

This article, and other criticism of Winston is DEAD ON. He’s an inconsistent, bad-decision-making, inaccurate QB. That’s just the TRUTH. He rarely completes the deep ball and when he does, it rarely (if ever) hits the WR in stride so he can continue his run. That’s what this article is pointing out.

This isn’t a conspiracy theory or ‘opinion’ about his inaccuracy issues, it’s just a FACT that Winston has proven after 5 years in the NFL.

It’s time for Winston to go. Extending him (which will cost the team $30M+/year) just isn’t worth it. The VALUE isn’t there. It’s a Salary Cap league. He’s just not worth that kind of money. If the Bucs extend him to a long term contract, there’s just no way in hell we turn into a consistent winning team barring a miracle with somehow magically improving and/or we get lucky and land 5-7 amazing players at below market rates.

  91. Smallville Says:

Wow, are all most of y’all in the chat room trying to blame Jameis Winston for the lost Sunday, (GTFOOH) what more do you want from the guy!!!He go them into position to win the freaking after the sorriest secondary gave up TD after TD. I guest that’s Jameis fault too. Well maybe he should have took the field and kicked the field goal as well… All y’all really sound crazy ass hell ..

  92. Tnew Says:

Jameis. We need to go play within yourself. You don’t have to try to win every game by yourself. But 390 yards and 3 tds is not enough. Clearly, if you’d have thrown for another 100 yards, another td and had zero turnovers then the team would’ve rallied around you and won the game. Until you can throw for 500 yards with 4 tds and 0 turnovers you suck and are the weight holding this team back. You can’t expect an nfl kicker to make a 34 yarder to win a game. That never happens. SMH.

  93. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

Really, TouchDown TampaBay you stole my name? You just tried to spell differently. You aren’t very creative. I bet you would try open a restaurant and call it McDonald’s.

  94. Bird Says:

    Doosh

    Disgusted is Webster.
It’s a new moniker but states he has been here forever ? Yah right.
    It’s him

  95. gotbbucs Says:

He cant read defenses and he cant process fast enough. Because of those two things he goes through his progressions slow, forcing him to miss wide open guys underneath, which forces him to push the ball more because he has a baseball throwing motion. His hero complex also makes it damn near impossible for him to check down early.

This is as accurate as he’ll ever be.

He is Daunte Cullpepper without the strength to throw accurate deep balls, and Mike Evans is his Randy Moss that bales him out on 50/50 balls.

Could you imagine what a good QB could do with these receivers? Bad defense or not, a good QB could have put this team in the playoffs the last four years, easily.
If they have another bad year and they give Winston a long term deal it will destroy this team. Let Winston walk, sign a vet, and move up in the draft for a good QB.

  96. Tnew Says:

Amen. Any other qb and playoffs. Fitz was 7-0 last season.

  97. ElioT Says:

WHY IS EVERYTHING SO DIVISIVE IN THESE THREADS???

We’re all fans and want the Bucs to WIN, if you don’t, I have no idea why you’d be on this site and I’d love to have free-time like that.

THE GIANTS GAME WAS LOST BECAUSE:
    ———————————————————
1.) At least two easy kicks missed by Gay
    – Definitely cursed in some way with this history of horrible kicks at the worst times

    2.) Questionable In-Game Decisions
    – Arians can justify it all he wants, but taking the DoG and the Kneel was totally weak

    3.) Horrible DB play
    – Not as bad as under M. Smith, but still very bad, especially with all the pressure
    – The D-Line shut the run down and was putting heat on Jones all day long
    – Good DBs feast under those circumstances

4.) A few mistakes by Jameis in an otherwise very good performance
    – Holding on to the ball way too long on too many plays
    – Taking sacks when he should just plant his foot and run straight up field
    – One very bad interception (Spin it however you want, that was a horrible throw)
***INTs happen though and that’s football
    – Jameis would probably agree with all of the above
    – Jameis has got to play better if he wants to be an elite or even a winning QB

5.) Daniel Jones outplaying Jameis Winston and WINNING the damn game
    – Kid played lights-out and fought through some serious adversity
    – Perhaps it was a fluke?
    – If Jones was a Bucs QB, everyone would be ecstatic about his debut, don’t lie.

Jameis played well enough to win the game, and if he would have played a bit better, it would have been a CURB-STOMPING…

I think the Bucs could do a lot worse at QB, but Winston’s play is and probably always will be pretty frustrating.

I’m not as concerned with the one pick as I am with his pocket awareness.

He’s GREAT at evading the initial pressure, he does it every game…

He’s BAD at making that split second decision to throw it away or just tuck it and run STRAIGHT up field to turn an 8 yard sack into a 2 yard sack or a positive gain. **And we know he can do it, he’s done it before.

This loss was a perfect storm of several mistakes from many different parties as well as a fantastic effort by a rookie QB.

My only comfort after that game was knowing how badly that game could have been in years past. The team didn’t quit and I hope they are very angry and looking to take that anger out on the Rams.

YES, this FRANCHISE is PATHETIC, and has been for a long time.

The Glazier Kids have no idea what they are doing, but they try; the proof is in the balance sheet.

For those of you shocked by all this, welcome to the club.

  98. Rod Munch Says:

LOL! Winston sets up the team for a 29 yard chip shot FG, he lead the team right down and answered back to the Giants score, the story should be how Winston stepped up huge – and because the Gay kicker missed a kick that every kicker in the NFL is expected to make 100% of the time, people are now talking about Winston doing more?

    Just nonsense.

Not only that who thinks if we get a TD with Evans that the Giants then get the ball back and win the game. I can totally see that happening.

Winston did his job, and did it extremely well. He did exactly what he needed to do there and the kicker missed it. That’s the entire story.

  99. Tnew Says:

The TRUTH is that if Winston played the exact game Jones played and Jones played exactly Winston’s game but the kicker makes the 29 yarder for Jones to win the fans are screaming louder about the two fumbles and his slow start.

I will wager near anything and I’m not a betting man, there is not a FG missed to lose a game 29 yards or shorter the rest of the season in the entire league.

  100. Wes Says:

Honestly, what more do you want from this QB? No one is going to play a perfect game unless your name is Tom Brady and even he makes mistakes. Jameis played a great game. Just shut up about it already. You admittedly called it nickpicky because the expectations are somehow through the roof. I’m so over the emotions being all over the place week in and week out. We win this game people would be screaming playoffs. We lose it and we are nitpicking a 380 yard 3 td performance with a chance to win in the end. I gotta take a break from this website.

  101. DooshLaRue Says:

    @Bird

I knew the BS being spewed sounded/smelled familiar, just couldn’t quite place it!

  102. BucsBandit Says:

This isn’t just about Jameis and the Giants game.

I don’t blame the loss against the Giants against Jameis at all. BUT… if anyone honestly thinks that Jameis couldn’t have played better in the 2nd half to put them away, then you aren’t paying attention.

His accuracy problems, as pointed out in this article, just ADD to the overall analysis in favor of We-Shouldn’t-Give-Jameis-30M-Per-Year and lock him into being our starting QB for the next 5 years (as well as having problems with the cap which will come from giving one player that much money if he’s not absolutely an elite QB).

  103. Anonymous Says:

You cant score 3 points in a whole 2nd half ….maybe if your up 50!!!!!

Just blaming it on the kicker is a LOSER mentality

I bet Mahomes would of threw guys open for the TD …something I thought J was good at

We get one TD in a half we win…oh I forgot the giants #1 defense locked us down

Cant expect the D to hold up all game with the offense not given em a 1st down to rest …all half

  104. DB55 Says:

The insinuation that old southern white men are racist and stupid is insulting and has now place on this site.

We’re not racist we’re smart football fans that know the next QBs will lead this team to 4 straight playoff appearances.

And we know that any real franchise quarterback can easily throw for 400 yards and 4 TDs to win a game week in and week out consistently

  105. DB55 Says:

This guy from PLANT CITY told me today that Jameis is so bad he ranks around 28th in the league in qbr. And to prove this he told me to google quarterback ratings for 2017 and 2016.

You can’t make this up my friends, this is the reality, this IS the “real Buc fan”.

He added that his paw-paw had been taking him to Bucs games since 1976 and Jameis is the worst quarterback he’s ever seen.

  106. unbelievable Says:

  107. Boombang Says:

Joe, the thing that irks me about Becht’s nitpicking comment…..This dude is a former player and he should know and understand that any QB is not going to be accurate all the time…..Could Winston have thrown a better pass, hell yes! But he could of just as well overthrew Evans…He could have thrown it wide….He could have just freaking tanked it…..It is not enough that Becht nitpicks about a single pass that if thrown accurate to Evans in stride…..There were no guarantees that Evans catches the ball…..What does Becht nitpick about then…..Winston put the team in a position to win and that is all any coach can ask of his QB and that is not withstanding Becht’s nitpicking…..If Becht wants to nitpick, how about nitpicking on how this inaccurate QB put the team in front and the defense gave up the lead or maybe nitpick on our kicker missing PATs/FGs……

  108. July Joe Says:

Maybe Jameis can be like Jimmy G and turn the ball over three times … but his team still wins.

Or like Goff and throw two picks … but his team still wins.

    Nope.

  109. Tnew Says:

All of these “you can’t score three points in a half” comments. Let’s look at week 2 when Mahomes, vs Oakland, scores no points for three quarters, including totally scoreless in the second half. He clearly sucks and chiefs should cut him.

  110. BucsBandit Says:

    DB55,

You must have not paid attention in school because Florida is NOT part of The South. So trying to imply that of course many old southern white men (Bucs fans) are racist is silly; most people in Florida aren’t even from here anyway.

But aside from that silliness, racists are racists. They’re not “selectively” racist. It’s highly doubtful that many Bucs fans would root for (and be big fans of) other black players on the Bucs yet somehow they’re racist and just don’t like Jameis. That’s a dumb insinuation.

Maybe, just maybe… many Bucs fans don’t like Jameis because, well, he kinda sucks with his inconsistency. And his massive turnover problem hasn’t exactly helped the team win. And… after 4+ years of this performance we’re ready to move on.

  111. Anonymous Says:

Winston does throw three picks…but he loses because his are so bad the other team gets TDs right away. Winston is a joke. OMG I hope he gets traded.

  112. Jaywill Says:

Becht has a personal dislike for Winston…the only catch that wasn’t in stride was the last one to Evans. OJ dropped a td when he was hit in stride.

  113. Ja'Boi Shaywei Says:

I’m a football fan, that’s as far as it goes with me. It is hilarious to read how many couch coaching mf’s get all emotional about someone else’s accomplishments or lack thereof. If you really wanna be frank, I think drawing a paycheck from any sports news network would make you haters feel a little better knowing that your opinion wouldn’t mean a thing. Except that fact that you’re not makes you a broke ass spectator with emotional outburst. Go Bucs!!!

  114. Oneilbucs Says:

Bucsbandit it has always been a problem with black quarterbacks in the NFL. The reason why people say that is becaus even when Jamies plays well yall still try to find ways to blame him. If Elie would have had the same stats from the game every body would be saying he played good. They will blame every body but him and that’s how white quarterbacks are treated they gets way more passes than black quarterbacks and that’s a proven fact!!! So what if Jamies plays good this week and we still lose then what???? That’s why I asked the question doing training camp what if Jamies plays good and we still lose then what??? How can you blame him if he does his part??

  115. jruss Says:

Why is anyone listening to Becht he was terrible during his time in the NFL.

  116. BucsBandit Says:

    Oneilbucs,

When you achieve big wins and other accomplishments you earn yourself a pass on criticism for some of your bad games. Eli has won two Super Bowls and taken his team to many playoff games. Jameis hasn’t been to a single playoff game in 4 years. AND he leads the league in turnovers.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why Jameis would get criticized for his play. It’s been inconsistent and often times very bad.

  117. Denjoe Says:

People think this stuff is real, you didn’t see the Daniel Jones story line all week, think wrestling, Any kicker that misses from there is not a pro!
