Bruce Arians Talks JPP Progress

September 26th, 2019

Yes, Jason Pierre-Paul restructured his Bucs contract and took a pay cut, which was reported yesterday.

That smelled to Joe like JPP was ready to make a comeback this season.

And that’s what Bucco Bruce Arians implied yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio when he joined hosts Alex Marvez and Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian.

“He is progressing nicely. I mean, he’s in there working out. He looks really good,” Arians said of JPP. “I’m hoping that, you know, we have that six-week window.  Hopefully we get him back after that.”

Arians saying “get him back” referred to JPP returning to on-field football activities (not just rehab) after being placed on the non-football injury reserve list following fracturing his neck in a May car accident.

“I want to see him play [in practice]. Anyone that you’re moving up or down off your roster from injured reserve now, there’s no more designations. It’s just who gets healthy fastest.”

The Bucs, of course, have other guys on injured reserve like Justin Evans and Blaine Gabbert, but obviously, JPP will be given every opportunity to show he’s healthy.

Linebacker Shaq Barrett talked this week about JPP on Buccaneers Radio, saying he only had talked to JPP a little bit at One Buc Palace because he hasn’t seen him around too much. Barrett, though, said he was impressed with JPP’s personality and that he commands a lot of respect.

Joe has no expectations of JPP after that kind of injury at 30 years old. Last season, JPP’s knee gave him problems and he had just one sack and one quarterback hit in his final four games. Still, it will be intriguing to see if he can get on the field and produce in the second half of the season.

If not, he certainly be gone next season as terms of his restructure made this the final season of his Bucs contract.

With all that added cap room for next year, I know we have guys to re-sign but I would love a top notch/shutdown corner and I have a feeling that the pay cut may allow us to add one through trade this year…Im not talking Jalen ramsey, I think Patrick Peterson comes here after his suspension. It would be a smoother transition as he already knows the defense. We have a bye week in week 7, he is eligible to come back after week 6, its a perfect scenario/ perfect fit.

Does JPP restructuring suggests they might be going for signing Barret on a long term deal?

  3. Buddy Says:

Boy Suh really is tearing it up. OJ Howard has as many solo tackles (2) as he does. lol.

  4. Todd Says:

    Buddy—

Do you watch the games with your head in the sand or up your anus? The reason our LB’s are Sack machines “is” because of the Suh/Vea pressure up the middle!

    Ignorance is your gift.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Buddy … Through these first 3 games, Suh has played 172 of the team’s 207 defensive snaps (83.1%) on the DLine, compared to Vea (146 snaps – 70.5%), Beau Allen (40 snaps – 19.3%), Nunez-Roches (46 snaps – 22.2%), Gholston (102 snaps – 49.3%) and Nassib (179 snaps – 86.5%). Yes Ndamukong Suh has ONLY 2 solo tackles, but so does Vea, so does Allen (Nunez-Roches has none). Nassib & Gholston each have 5 solo tackles, but that should be expected (teams are reluctant to run right at Suh & Vea?).

Take Suh (or Vea) out of our DLine (for whatever reason) and Bucs’ defense would be in a world of hurt. Those 2 big guys are the engine that pulls the train. Everything revolves around them IMO. Why do you think Barrett has been as productive as he’s been? (Not just 8 sacks, but also 8 QB Hits, 7 TFLs & 2 forced fumbles in just 3 games). Those are incredible stats, but it all starts with the inside pressure that Suh & Vea are putting on.

And Joe, I still doubt that we’ll see one play out of JPP this year. We can only bring back 2 guys. Gabbert will most likely be one of them. And I’d put my money on Justin Evans before JPP. After getting his deal redone, JPP has ZERO incentive to play for the Bucs this year UNLESS we’re a playoff contender come December. Yup, holding my breath on that one.

Talking about my progress toward apathy.

I used to relish reading these Buc articles, now…meh.

    Losing has it’s effects.

    Sell the team Glazer boys.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Todd … You’re starting to sound like some other JBFers. Just my opinion, but calling people ignorant rarely sways their opinion of anything, except maybe of you.

And Joe, I still don’t understand your moderation algorithm. First comment of the day, 5 AM, no quotes, no bad words, yet off to the cooler I go. HOPEFULLY there’s no ‘targeting’ built in there. JBF.com is a fun site, but when comments often get released from the dungeon hours after they were written, they become inconsequential (which most of mine are anyways I’m sure). Perception becomes reality.

  8. Bobby M. Says:

I’m no cap guru but now we only have this year to squeeze something out of him production wise or via a trade. Our GM just doesnt seem to be all that good other then saving money for the Glaziers. This team will never field a consistent winner because its not the Glaziers focus. Its cash flow 1st…..selling hope 2nd…..winning 3rd.

  9. Buddy Says:

@Todd didn’t realize we were paying him for “pressures” as you like say. Point taken. Money well spent. LOLOLOL

  13. Doolnutts Says:

Buddy Not to get in a pissing match here but Suh’s primary goal is to take up blocks which he has been doing very well. Pressures is just a nice bonus, something the coaching staff would love but not knock on Suh about when getting graded out in the film room… I’ve played DL in a 3-4 suhs job was my job so it’s irrelevant what you come back with. Coach’s always told us we were going to make the LB’s around us famous if we can hold up to eating blocks…

  14. Pittsshore Says:

It came down to take a pay cut or get cut. Nothing more, nothing less

  15. macabee Says:

Defense Rules, just jogging your memory. You’re right only two players can return from IR. But as you recall, JPP is not on IR he is on Reserve/NFI. No problem bringing either or both JPP/Evans back to the 53 roster. In each case, a corresponding player must be cut. Go Bucs!

  16. Hodad Says:

We had him for a full year last season, and still finished 5-11. Even if he does come back, we’ll be 2-6 by then, and he ain’t going to make us win 8 in a row. Stop dreaming, this team constructed by Licht, quarterbacked by Jameis, and owned by the Glazers is a dumpster fire. We’ll be lucky to match last years record.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

macabee … You’re exactly right, as always … good catch. The rules for PUP and NFI are essentially the same from what I remembered reading (with a twist or 2). Bucs do have a couple of 6-week ‘windows’ to activate JPP it sounds like. The first is undoubtedly a non-starter, but the 2nd MIGHT come into play. For anyone who’s interested, here’s what the rules apparently call for:

“By rule, players on Reserve/PUP list are excluded from practicing and playing during the first six weeks of the regular season. They’re allowed to do conditioning work with the trainers — similar to what they did during training camp on the Active/PUP list.

After six weeks are in the books, teams have another six week window for that player to begin practicing. If they’re unable to practice when this window expires, they remain on the PUP list for the rest of the season. If and when they do practice during that additional six-week window, teams have 21 days to make a decision:

    1) Activate the player to the 53-man roster,
    2) Release/waive the player or
    3) Do nothing and keep him on the PUP list. If teams maximize all their windows, a player could be held out and not activated until well into December.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Pittsshore … From what I can tell, Bucs were under no obligation to pay JPP (the additional $7.4 mil) under NFI rules OR to cut him now. He was under contract for $12.5 mil (with incentives) in 2020 … a steal IF he returned to his former self (which he would have incentive to do). IMO we gained nothing by redoing his contract … and lost him for 2020.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

    DR Says:
“IMO we gained nothing by redoing his contract … and lost him for 2020”

Same here. To me, the biggest potential benefit to keeping JPP around was not what he could do for the team this year in 1/2 a season or less – but hopefully getting a healthy JPP back next year for $12.5M – a bargain if he could play at anything close to what we saw in 2018.

Trading a 3rd rd pick for 3 years of service from a stud DE seemed like a pretty good deal – especially after JPP got 12 sacks last year….

But winding up with only 1 year or maybe 1 1/2 years of JPP’s services for that high 3rd rd pick – makes the trade not such a good deal after all.

The only way this latest JPP development makes any sense to me is if the Bucs have already determined they are going to try and re-sign Shaq Barrett now or soon – before he gets another 10 sacks and becomes completely un-affordable.

  20. Buc believer Says:

What a TOTAL waste of money! If I were the Glazers this would be the LAST straw. Pay a guy with a broken neck because he MAY be back in November… WOW!!! First the Bucs are toast by October. Second the day they found out about a broken neck he should have been release with some nice parting gifts and his salary cap space used on someone that could produce NOW!

You forgot to mention our sh#@tty kicker. Lol.

    ————————

You played in a 2-gap 3-4. The Bucs run a 1-gap 3-4. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been eating blocks and that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been effective. Truthfully, we’ve gotten very little pressure from the interior line. Suh and Vea have been dominant against the run, as has Gholston and Nassib but the pressure is primarily coming from Barrett. The interior DL has been doing a good job, mostly, of pushing the pocket and keeping the QB from stepping up. What they haven’t been doing well is consistently creating pressure when not double teamed. The Bucs are blitz happy but literally the only really effective pass rusher is Barrett who goes on almost every play. At this point we would be more effective just rushing four.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The deal told me that JPP wants out of Tampa. By reducing his salary this year, he was able to get his freedom next year.

    It’s that simple.

How do I know this? Easy. Next year was not guaranteed. The Bucs had no reason to want to dismiss it, so it had to come from JPPs side.

Well, at least I got to see him in a Bucs uniform…ugly as they are.

  24. TOM Says:

Restructering JPP contract, I’m not sure what Licht has in mind but I do know one thing, they need to sign Shaq to a long term extension. LIKE NOW.
